    6:46

In this video I show how I mixed a particular screaming vocal part in a new song demo. **At 4:17 I meant hi-pass filter, not lo-pass filter**

I have a TON of plugins, but overall everything could be done with free plugins to some extent if you put the work into it. Many of the compressors i'm using are analog simulations, but the Logic compressor would get the same dynamic compression just without the analog simulation. The saturation could be done with a free saturater, but you will likely have to spend more time getting the right sound.

  • Queens of Screams, Top 8 female metal screaming vocalists

    9:56

Just my opinion on which female vocalist in metal can scream the best. No none are screamo. Yes I know I left out some big ones like Straight Line Stitch, Walls of Jericho, Flyleaf, Light This City, Iwrestledabearonce among a few others. I dont posses the entire music library on my computer. So if any big ones aren't on here or ones you may think deserve a spot it's likely that either I've never heard of them or I didn't have their stuff downloaded at the time, chances are very slim that I hate the band.

    Also, a few more things:
    1. I am fully aware of all the Otep support about her placement, if this video was more recent, she would most likely be in place 3, 2, or 1 even.
    2. I'm fine if you want Angela on top, but DO NOT give me shit about it.
    3. I know the fact that I put Kittie in front of Otep has pissed a bunch of you off, I would change it if I could. And I dont have the time to make a new vid.
    4. I KNOW THAT SOME BIG ONES ARE LEFT OUT!!!! I know about Light this City, I know about Straight Line Stitch, I know about Eths, and Merlin, and Flyleaf, and Walls of Jericho, and Iwrestledabearonce, and probably any other one you could dream up. You dont have to remind and because they aren't on here, does not mean I dont know about them.
    5. I dont need your approval on the relevancy of how metal or not metal any particular band on here is.

    BUY A PORTRAIT OF HOME:

Stuck on some of the techniques you've seen demonstrated in this video or any others? Mike Schii is now available on limited basis for one-on-one video lessons, through his profile at Send him a message if you're interested.

After somewhat of a hiatus, Screaming Success is back with a new video, this time teaching you how to use the false cord scream by combining principles from two previous videos: throat singing and the compression fry.

    M. Schii is the lead vocalist for Nashville's finest progressive metal group Invicta, and to see the techniques he teaches employed, please check out our channel for some great music videos and other material.

We just released our second EP album A Portrait of Home, and if you like what you hear, supporting us by purchasing an album is greatly appreciated. We are unsigned, so every purchase goes towards more merch, gas money, or other band-related expenses. We couldn't make our music without you!

Sick Island Studios is owned and operated by DJ of Invicta and Ryan Swinehart in Nashville, TN. It is available for booking sessions, mixing, mastering, and other audio projects. Prices are very reasonable and you will not be disappointed. E-mail any inquiries to sickislandstudios@gmail.com.

The Flirty Whistle - slide your finger up and down the high e string quickly

The Elephant - turn the volume on the guitar down, then hit the 5th fret (G string) natural harmonic, then the 7th fret (B string) natural harmonic, then as you turn up the volume on the guitar raise the whammy bar and bomb it down

Bad Horsie - works best with 3rd and 5th fret G string harmonics, then go ape shit on the whammy bar

The tap/slide - as you tap the note, run your finger up the fretboard and repeat if desired

The shrieking Eels - Put on a shit ton of reverb, and slowly pick scrape the high e string

Natural Harmonics - gently rest your finger over the fret and pluck it. (works best with 5th, 7th, and 12th frets)

Scratching the Taint - pluck all the strings behind the nut

Tap Harmonics - tap an octave up of whatever frets your hand is on (i.e. playing 5th fret, tap 17th fret)

Palm Harmonics - (this one is a little tricky), as you release the tapped note, use your palm to trigger the harmonic (as you would a standard pinch harmonic) by gently grazing the string right after the tap is released.

Bending the Taint - bend the string behind the nut (individual results may vary)

  • How to make Vocaloids growl and scream 【Vocaloid Tutorial】

    4:03

PLEASE READ ME FOR FURTHER INFORMATION~

Since I couldn't find any video tutorials on how to make Vocaloids scream and growl, and info on that topic is pretty rare in general, I figured I should make one myself.

In order to make a Vocaloid growl, I use a plugin called charsiesis.
Quote from the developer: Charsiesis, a chorus / delay / wackiness effect
If you're using a 64bit system, it might be necessary to use jBridge. This program basically converts a 32bit plugin into a 64bit plugin. This might be a cubase exclusive issue though.
jBridge is also the reason for that censor bar under charsiesis, since it shows your name and email address for whatever reason. Just in case you wondered.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask me. I'll try to be as helpful as possible.
Just be aware that I'm nowhere near Utsu-P or so. But I do like the sound I got.

Need some help editing your vocal tracks?
I’ve spent hundreds (maybe thousands?) of hours working with all different sorts of vocals… and I’ve tried almost every approach and workflow to get vocals that are in time and in tune without sounding fake or T-Pain’d.

After all of this trial and error, I’ve boiled it down to a small set of tools and a specific plan of attack that I follow when editing vocals.

Make no mistake… vocals are the first thing the listener connects with regardless of whether it’s brutal death metal or Backstreet Boys. So you've gotta nail it!

Here’s the workflow that delivers the best results and the least artifacts in the shortest time.

  • How To Mix Screaming / Growling Vocals in Reaper

    14:06

Are your growling vocals sounding like crap? You've come to the right place.

Disclaimer: This is MY way of doing stuff. There are tons of other roads to follow, but this should help you out.

First off, you do NOT need a fancy microphone in order to record good sounding growling vocals. If you are on a budget, get a Behringer XM8500 or a similar SM58-knockoff. It sounds more than good enough for this.

    1. Get a pop filter, or put a sock in front of your microphone.
    2. Have your vocalist step back from the microphone. The proximity effect will mess up your vocals on dynamic microphones especially.
    3. Dont bother treating your room acoustically, it won't do much for what we're doing here. I have recorded like this in acoustically horrible rooms with no problems.
    4. Make your vocalist wear headphones, dont use speakers, because they will blend in with the recorded vocals and create lots of mess.

When you have happily recorded your vocals, it's time to make what sounds like shit sound good. First off, put a limiter on your vocal track. I'm using the W1 limiter in my video here, which you can easily find by googling. When you have set your threshold and ceiling to your liking, move on to adding a de-esser. Find the annoying S-frequencies and kill them. Add delay or reverb; I hate reverb, so I mostly use delay. Make the delay sound over-the-top when soloing the vocals, your won't hear your delay as well in the finaly mix anyways. Finally, add an EQ and cut the frequencies below approx. 40hz, in order to avoid any problems with runaway bass frequencies from the vocals.

    USE GOOD JUDGEMENT:
Vocal training is an athletic endeavor and you must always warm-up before you begin to train and sing. Some modern styles can challenge the performance envelope for the modern vocalist, therefore you must build physical strength and coordination to produce these modern vocal sounds properly to prevent injury and remain healthy. Never, under any circumstances, sing by “pushing” or forcing your body to do things it is resisting. Gripping, tightness, constriction and all forms of tension are to be avoided at all times. If you are experiencing any results that are anything other then complete freedom from tension and gripping, then you are not executing these techniques properly and you are not using your voice in a healthy way and should stop immediately. Singing with distortion can be dangerous if you are not trained properly on the techniques to do it in a healthier way, you can injure yourself.
If you are susceptible to throat injury, have a history of throat illness, smoke, or have not been approved by your doctor to train modern vocal techniques, you should consult a medical professional prior to viewing video tutorials, taking private vocal lessons or group classes with Mary Zimmer and VoiceHacks, LLC.
By participating in private one-on-one Skype video call vocal lessons or group classes with Mary Zimmer, you agree that there are inherent risks in vocal training and singing aggressively. By becoming a member of VoiceHacks.Net to view the full-length video tutorials, you atree that there are inherent risks in vocal training and singing aggressively. Voice Hacks LLC and Mary Zimmer are not responsible for your occupational hazard and your choice to sing. If you ever feel pain, tension or gripping at any time before, during, or after singing, DO NOT CONTINUE TO SING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. If pain persists, see a medical professional.

Now personally, I prefer singers., but hey, I get it, everybody is trying to out evil each other, and this vocal style is very popular…. I’ve certainly recorded enough bands doing it.

From an engineering standpoint, this style is very simple. Throw up an SM7 onto a stand, put up a pop filter, get your levels on your mic pre, (make sure the vocalist is at his proper level) and run it into a compressor. Hit record and away you go. And really, that’s all there is to it.

The difficulty with recording this style comes from the vocalist.
