  • Zakir Hussain and Dave Holland: Crosscurrents | JAZZ NIGHT IN AMERICA

    1:56:00

Tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, prolific bassist Dave Holland and their international ensemble perform together as Crosscurrents, a musical exploration of the influence of Indian music on the jazz and rock scenes of the '60s.

    Hear the radio episode:

    —————————————————————

    by NATE CHINEN

Virtuosity — of a dazzling, ebullient, yet altogether generous sort — might be the most obvious bridge between David Holland and Zakir Hussain. But there's also a deep cultural foundation behind their musical dialogue, which forms the beating heart of a project called Crosscurrents.

Hussain, a peerless master of the Indian tabla, and Holland, an English-born bassist of sterling jazz renown, were both shaped in some way by the 1960s, a decade of awakening and convergence. In this episode of Jazz Night in America, we'll explore the influence of Indian music on the jazz and rock scenes of that era — as well as the less familiar story of jazz's influence on the subcontinent, embodied by musicians like pianist and composer Louiz Banks.

We'll hear music from a recent Jazz at Lincoln Center concert led by Hussain and Holland. Crosscurrents also features Banks, his son, drummer Gino Banks, along with acclaimed American saxophonist and flutist Chris Potter, Bollywood vocal star Shankar Mahadevan and Mumbai-based jazz guitarist Sanjay Divecha. We'll also get some valuable outside perspective from percussionist Sameer Gupta and other musicians in Brooklyn Raga Massive, which pursues a similar form of thrumming exchange.

Partnerami lidera byli tam John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek i legendarny Hariprasad Chaurasia – wuj Rakesha, którego usłyszymy w Krakowie.
Z Johnem McLaughlinem Hussain współpracował wielokrotnie, m.in. współtworząc świetne nagrania jego grup Shakti i Remember Shakti. Z kolei wspólnie z Billem Laswellem prowadził grupę Tabla Beat Science, gromadzącą wybitnych tablistów i perkusjonistów. Współtworzył też znakomite projekty Planete Drum i Global Drum.
Prowadzi m.in. grupę RAF, czyli Rakesh and Frieds.
Koncert odbył się w Sali Audytoryjnej ICE Kraków 8 lipca 2015.

ZAKIR HUSSAIN is undoubtedly one of the greatest legends of world music, virtuoso of the tabla, and artist who tours and
records with many other acclaimed musicians, including those form the world of jazz.
His father was the famous musician Ustad Alla Rakha. Thanks to his father, Zakir learned to play musical instruments from his youngest days. He started performing as a teenager, and when he was 19 years old, he travelled to the US for the first time, appearing alongside Ravi Shankar.
Audiences remember Hussain’s acclaimed albums, especially “Making Music” recorded for the famous ECM label. It is regarded as one of the finest musical fusions of the East and the West. Hussain was accompanied by John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek and the legendary Hariprasad Chaurasia – uncle of Rakesh, who joins Hussain in Kraków.
Hussain has worked with McLaughlin many times, for example when creating recordings with his groups Shakti and Remember Shakti. He also worked alongside Bill Laswell, leading the group Tabla Beat Science bringing together acclaimed tablists and percussionists. He has also co-created the outstanding projects Planete Drum and Global Drum, and worked with some of the greatest musicians of all time, from George Harrison and Van Morrison to Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd. He is a living legend himself.
RAKESH CHAURASIA is more than just a nephew of Hariprasad Chaurasia – he is also one of his most talented pupils. He plays the bansouri, a traditional South Asian bamboo flute. He has worked with musicians including Talvin Singh, participated in recording dozens of albums, and he leads the RAF ensemble – Rakesh and Friends.

  • Zakir Hussain Workshop: Session 1 led by Zakir Hussain

    6:41

A diverse group of instrumentalists learn fixed Raga melodies together and connect them within a rhythmic Tala cycle, in a complex arrangement that will eventually accompany Kathak dance. Zakir Hussain leads a rehearsal for an ensemble of participants whose instruments range from European violin, trumpet, cello and clarinet to tabla, drumset and various other percussion, teaching them a sequence of melodic lines based in a Raga, while holding a 7 beat rhythmic cycle underneath.

The Zakir Hussain Workshop, presented from April 13--19, 2009, was a chance for experienced musicians of any instrument and style to expand their existing knowledge through the guidance of tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain and his colleagues.

Zakir Hussain presents a critical element of Indian music, which is the unique tension and release compositional device known as Tihai, that presents a fixed rhythmic phrase three times in sequence, with the last beat of the third phrase landing on the Sam. Understanding the elements of Raga melody and Tala rhythm leads towards a culminating type of phrase unique Indian music, known as a Tihai, which is used to build excitement, tension and ultimately a release on the first beat of the cycle Sam.

A short film produced by SFJAZZ and directed by Anisa Qureshi (Zakir's daughter), which premiered to close out the SFJAZZ Gala 2017 honoring Zakir Hussain on January 18, 2017, and features interviews with Vijay Iyer, Eric Harland, Bela Fleck, Mickey Hart, Herbie Hancock, Zane Dilal, Edgar Meyer, Michael Tilson Thomas, John McLaughlin, Alonzo King and Charles Lloyd.

A note from Director Anisa Qureshi:

Anahata or the un-struck sound is the sanskrit word for the heart chakra, the fourth chakra and refers to the sound made by the creation of the universe that still reverberates in the celestial realm. It is the most sacred vibration and is likened to the sound of waves crashing on the shore or thunder... and when you hear it, it is said you will know nirvana.

Although Anahata is not usually associated with anything struck or hit like a drum, it in every way reminds me of my father, Zakir Hussain, a man ruled by his expansive and inimitable heart, a seeker and devotee of the truest rhythmic vibration, a being who completely lets go of himself in order to channel mystical sounds to the people of the world.

Anyone who has met him can feel the power of that heart, the miracle of which is just as permeable and transformational as any struck sound he creates on the tabla.

As a daughter of the muse, I've seen him play incredible, unbelievable music. I've even felt fear that his heart might stop from doing things that did not seem humanly possible, but to me the most exceptional thing about my father is who he is as man, as a whole being. I'm not alone in this feeling. In Anahata you will hear many of the musical luminaries of the world share that same belief.

Our deepest gratitude goes to SFJAZZ and the incomparable musicians who shared their words (both included in tonight's video and not) on Zakir. Our musical fraternity is our family and through it we can and do accomplish great things together.

On January 18, 2017, the SFJAZZ Center filled with cultural and political leaders, celebrities, artists, and music enthusiasts to present Zakir Hussain with the SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award and celebrate our 5th Anniversary Season in the SFJAZZ Center.

Everybody wants to play with Zakir Hussain. He's amazing. He's able to transcend cultures and national borders. – Herbie Hancock
