  • ZOOT SIMS: In a sentimental Mood

    52:01

Another treasure from the Sonet archives: a concert by a highly accomplished and superbly compatible Zoot Sims Trio, recorded in the library of the Sonet headquarters building in Lidingö, Sweden, on November 21st 1984 - just four months before Zoot died, at the age of 60.

Happily, the concert was also filmed. Ira Gitler once described the spirit and sensibility expressed by Zoot Sims as “eternal verities” - a phrase which vividly conveys the quintessential honesty of Zoot’s approach to music.

This is an absolutely joyous session performed by three outstanding musicians and the enjoyment they derived from playing together informs every not of the music. And there is a bonus in the form of a delightfully light-hearted interview which Red Mitchell has with Zoot Sims.

  • Bill Evans & Zoot Sims - Loose Blues

    46:03

Loose Blues is an album by jazz pianist Bill Evans released on the Milestone label featuring performances by Evans with Zoot Sims, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, and Philly Joe Jones recorded in 1962.

Personnel: Bill Evans (p) Zoot Sims (tsax) Jim Hall (gr) Ron Carter (b) Paul Motian (dr)
    Released: 1982
Recorded: August 21-22, 1962 Nola Penthouse Sound Studios, NY
    Label: Milestone MCD-9200-2
    Producer: Orrin Keepnews

    Loose Bloose
    Loose Bloose [alternate take]
    Time Remembered
    Funkallero
    My Bells
    There Came You
    Fudgesickle Built for Four
    Fun Ride

Loose Blues was recorded for the Riverside label, but eventually dropped mostly because of Riverside forthcoming bankruptcy and the pressures of Verve producer Creed Taylor - he wanted Evans on his Verve label. So the project was shelved, and released posthumously only in 1982 as MCD-9200-2, after having been rediscovered in the Fantasy Records vaults. This was, in fact, believed to be a lost album since Keepnews couldn't find the master reels of the session dates, except for a take of Loose Bloose. However, after a thorough research, he did succeed in finding the reels stored in poorly marked tape boxes. The material was then assembled by Keepnews and Ed Michel. Fudgesickle Built for Four was named by Evans himself - who dug puns - and was a reference to a bicycle built for two, a line from the popular song Daisy Bell. Keepnews, recalling the sessions, stated that My Bells, which is characterized by difficult tempo changes, took 25 takes to be recorded properly

Autum Leaves - Zoot Sims 1985
In 1985 somewhere in Sweden, Zoot played a session together with two top jazz musicians.
In a comfortable living room he recorded with bassist Red Mitchell and guitarist Rune Gustafsson the old and famous standard called Autumn Leaves.
Zoot died that year, unfortunately at only 59. This might have been his last recording.
Red Mitchell was the musician who tuned his bass in fifths, just like the violin and and the cello and this shows in his creative and unique solo work .
Rune Gustafsson, maybe it was done in his house, recorded already with Zoot in the late seventies.
All together this was done in a relaxed atmosphere and that shows in what you hear.

  • Zoot Sims Memorial Concert - Jim Hall and Bob Brookmeyer

    6:20

At the 1986 Zoot Sims Memorial Concert, guitarist Jim Hall paid a musical tribute to their friend and collaborator. Video courtesy Turk Mauro.

Zoot Sims was born in Inglewood, California, October 29, 1925, the son of vaudeville performers Kate Haley and John Sims. His father was a vaudeville hoofer, and Sims prided himself on remembering many of the steps his father taught him. Growing up in a performing family, Sims learned to play both drums and clarinet at an early age. His brother was trombonist Ray Sims.
Following in the footsteps of Lester Young, Sims developed into an innovative tenor saxophonist. Throughout his career, he played with big bands, starting with those of Kenny Baker and Bobby Sherwood after dropping out of high school after one year. He played with Benny Goodman's band in 1943 and replaced his idol Ben Webster in Sid Catlett's Quartet in 1944.
Sims served 1944-46 as a corporal in the United States Army Air Forces, then moved on to such renowned bands as those of Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton, and Buddy Rich. Sims was also one of Woody Herman's Four Brothers, and he was known among his peers as one of the strongest swingers in the field. He frequently led his own combos and sometimes toured with his friend Gerry Mulligan's sextet, and later with Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band. Sims rejoined Goodman in 1962 for a tour of the Soviet Union.
In the 1950s and '60s, Sims had a long, successful partnership as co-leader of a quintet with Al Cohn, which recorded under the name Al and Zoot. That group was a favorite at New York City's Half Note Club. Always fond of the higher register of the tenor sax, Zoot also liked to play alto and late in his career added the soprano saxophone to his performances, while recording a series of albums for the Pablo Records label of impresario Norman Granz. Zoot also played on some of Jack Kerouac's recordings.
Sims acquired the nickname Zoot early in his career while he was in the Kenny Baker band in California. The name was later appropriated for a sax-playing Muppet.
Zoot Sims died in New York City of cancer on March 23, 1985, and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nyack, New York.
