Yasushi Akutagawa - Rhapsody

Rapsodia per orchestra (1971)
An orchestral work by Japanese composer Yasushi Akutagawa (1925-1989), the youngest son of the renowned writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Yasushi Akutagawa studied composition with Qunihico Hashimoto, who was in turn a student of Egon Wellesz, Midori Hosokawa, who trained with Franz Schmidt in Vienna, and later with Akira Ifukube. Akutagawa's own musical style drew on both the lyricism of Hashimoto and the almost primitivist dynamism of Ifukube. In 1971, the Bunka-cho (Agency for Cultural Affairs) commissioned the Rhapsody. It is scored for strings, triple or quadruple wind and a large percussion section. Akutagawa described this piece as a vision of a sorcerer waving a short wand.

Yasushi Akutagawa was one of Japan’s most prominent composers during post war years. He was equally host to TV programs and wrote musicological books. While his first style is approachable and easy to grasp, his second period was more musically complex and demanding. In 1948, he wrote the Trinità Sinfonica, a symphonically constituted triptych or Trinity. Using an easygoing style borrowed from Sino-Soviet Socialist Realism, he builds a singular symphonic language that mixes his own Japanese sensitivity with influences from Kabalevsky, Shostakovich and even Joaquín Rodrigo.

Yasushi Akutagawa - Ballet Suite The Spiders Thread
15:42
composer: Yasushi Akutagawa (芥川也寸志)
Ballet Suite The Spider's Thread
after Ryūnosuke Akutagawa's The Spider's Thread
Tetsuji Honna, Japan philharmonic orchestra
1. Prelude (前奏曲) [0:10]
2. Heaven in the morning
3. The spider and Kandhata
4. Bloodbath in Hell (血の地獄) [7:45]
5. The Spider's Thread
6. Heaven at noon (極楽の昼) [13:14]

Akutagawa:La Danse
7:50
Yasushi Akutagawa(1925-1989) is one of the greatest Japanese composer in the post-war era. The son of the great writer, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, he is one of the leader of the culture in Japanese.
He was greatly influensed by the music of Soviet. In 1955, he went to USSR and met the great musicians, such as Shostakovich, Kabalevsky, Khrennnikov, and Kabalesky, whose house he stayed for the several days.
This La Danse consists of two dance and an intermezzo. in the school days and this work is his first Opus which remains today.
No.1 is the bit-fast march. the main ethnic theme is used repeatedly.
Intermezzo is Prestissimo, perpetuum mobile of basso ostinato. It evokes the machine, especially the trackter, the symbol of the mortanizaion and civilization of USSR.
No.2, the longest, is the slower than No.1. It evokes me of the motif of the northern Japan, next to Sibelia. It is obvious he was influenced by the music of Akira Ifukube(1914-2006), shows barbalism and ethnitism.
Unforthnately, he seldom composed the work for piano.
