    Music written by Ramin Djawadi.

This is one of my favourite tunes - it suits the feel of the series perfectly and makes you think of open spaces and far away lands :)

When I tried to record this the first time, I was very disappointed - it just didn't have that epic feel that strings seem to get, so I tried to do it in a way that would suit the flute and I added all the other flutes. Then I kept on changing things until it sounded ok..

I'm playing the percussive drum parts on the bass flute and contrabass flute and have panned it left and right to get closer to the epic feel of the original.

The contrabass flute's low basslines starts midway through just to add bottom end. I love the deep sound that one normally doesn't associate with flutes :)

Thanks to Leo Dale for the filming and Husky Hoskulds for the mix!

    About the Ndlovu Youth Choir:
Can participation in a music program change the lives of even the world’s most disadvantaged children? The choristers of the Ndlovu Youth Choir are living proof that it certainly can. This vibrant youth choral ensemble chants, harmonizes, and tip-toe-taps their way through a powerful 11-language repertoire that includes a sampling of all things South Africa: from isicathamiya (is-caht-a-MEE-ya), the a cappella genre accompanied only by body percussion, made famous by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to ancient tribal chants, contemporary gospel, Afro-pop and Afro-jazz from the repertoires of Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba, and uplifting choral music written exclusively for the choir.
Founded in 2009, this exuberant group has toured southern Africa and Europe with their multi-sensorial performances to significant critical and audience acclaim. The members are selected by audition from the young people from the Ndlovu Care Group, a community program providing healthcare, early childhood education, after-school activities, and more to rural Moutse, Limpopo, South Africa. Program directors find that, because of the time commitment of the choir, as well as the values of self-discipline, self- confidence, and leadership that participation imbues, choristers have lower rates of drug use, delinquency, and teen pregnancy than their peers.
It’s about more than just staying out of trouble, though. The choir offers an early pathway to artistic and professional achievement that is so often only available to children from affluent backgrounds, but it also offers a connection to the children’s ancestral roots and allows them to share those cultural roots with the world. It’s a profound gift in both directions, and one which the singers themselves say fills them with hope: for a better life and for a better world.

    LYRICS:
If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the color of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
    To clinch a lifetime's argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are
On and on the rain will fall
    Like tears from a star
    Like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
    How fragile we are
    How fragile we are
On and on the rain will fall
    Like tears from a star
    Like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say

Globe-trotting flutist and composer Wouter Kellerman received a 2014 GRAMMY® Award for his album Winds of Samsara. Winds Of Samsara reached #1 on the US Billboard Chart and also peaked at #1 on the Zone Music Reporter Top 100 International Radio Airplay Chart in the month of July 2014, winning both the ZMR ‘Album of the Year’ and ‘Best World Album’ awards.

His following album Love Language debuted at nr. 1 on the World Music Billboard charts in its first week. In December 2015 it received a GRAMMY® nomination for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, Kellerman’s second nomination in as many years. In May 2016 Love Language won the SAMA (South African Music Award, equivalent to the American Grammy®) for ‘Best Instrumental and/or Classical Album’. From the album, the song ‘The Long Road’, a solo flute piece which Wouter wrote for Nelson Mandela, won the 2016 Global Peace Song Award in the public voted Acoustic/ Contemporary Music category.

2019 saw the release of In A Different Light, which received five nominations at the New York-based Independent Music Awards, as well as two SAMA nominations, including one for Best Produced Album.

During a corporate event in late 2018 Kellerman worked with the Ndlovu Youth Choir (a rural choir based in Moutse in the Limpopo province of South Africa) - and was overwhelmed and enchanted with their spirit, enthusiasm and sound. Wouter has a long history of supporting children, so he decided to collaborate with the choir and help showcase their talent – together they created a South African version of Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You. The song became an internet sensation, going viral with tens of millions of views on social media, and winning awards like the HMMA (Hollywood Music in Media Award) for ‘Best Independent Music Video’ - pushing the Ndlovu Youth Choir firmly into the international limelight. Soon after, America’s Got Talent saw the clip and were so impressed that they ended up scouting the choir to enter the 2019 competition. Ndlovu went ahead and delivered a sensational first few rounds, going all the way through to the finals of the competition, showcasing South African music and spirit in the process.

Wouter has travelled extensively, performing around the globe in places like Berlin, Shanghai, Delhi and Sydney, including three sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2010 he performed at the FIFA Soccer World Cup Closing Ceremony to a global television audience of 700-million people.

A 2016 highlight was a performance in Johannesburg for Narendra Modi, the visiting Prime Minister of India, and a television audience of more than 200 million people.

Passionate about teaching and empowering young people, Kellerman has sponsored the living expenses of ten children in the SOS Children’s Village in Ennerdale, South Africa for the past 18 years; he has also financed the building of a house in the SOS Children’s Village in Rustenburg, South Africa. For his continued efforts in helping give these children better lives, Kellerman was nominated by the SOS Children’s Villages for the Inyathelo Special Recognition Award for Philanthropy.

'Shenandoah’ (Also known as ‘Oh Shenandoah’ or ‘Across the Wide Missouri’) is a traditional American folk song dating to the early 19th century. The song appears to have originated with Canadian and American voyageurs or fur traders traveling down the Missouri River in canoes.

Though this traditional American folk song has come to possess several different sets of lyrics, one story stands out: The tale of love between a French trader and the daughter of a Native American chief that serves as a bridge between worlds. Wouter Kellerman illustrates the classic tune with flute and choir, beautifully intertwined with Alexis D’Souza’s enchanting vocals.

    Shenandoah, I love your daughter

'Malaika' is from Wouter Kellerman's (flute) album Mzansi.

Malaika is a Swahili song written by Tanzanian Adam Salim in 1945. This song is possibly the most famous of all Swahili love songs in Tanzania, Kenya, and East Africa, as well as being one of the most widely known of all Swahili songs in the world. Malaika in this context means angel in Swahili, and this word has always been used by the Swahili speakers to refer to a beautiful girl.

The lyrics of the song differ slightly from version to version; the title itself is subject to variation, such as Ewe Malaika or My Angel.

Reminiscent of the political and cultural landscape in Gandhi's world, this song has diverse elements and voices, but it all comes together in a beautiful, harmonious melody, describes Wouter. Kej adds that Mahatma Gandhi is an inspiration to everyone in India - and that his universal and timeless message remains as relevant as ever. Our intention is to convey the Great One's vision of worldwide peace, non-violence and love through the universal language of music with instruments such as flute, guitar, string sections and vocals.

Mandela Medley from our new album 'Symphonic Soweto - Tribute to Nelson Mandela' with the Soweto Gospel Choir.

This is a medley consisting of two freedom songs, dedicated to Nelson Mandela. The name ‘Rolihlahla’ (meaning “pulling the branch of a tree” or colloquially “troublemaker”) was the isiXhosa birth name given to Mandela. This powerful revolutionary song calls on the “troublemaker” to speak to the leadership of the African National Congress about the plight of the people, whilst at the same time criticizing the apartheid leadership. This composition portrays the troublemaker’s transition to the brave one and eventually the champion of human rights.

    Lyrics:
    Is this the real life?
    Is this just fantasy?
    Caught in a landslide
    No escape from reality
    Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
    A little high, little low
Anyway the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me, to me
    Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
    Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away
    Mama, oh oh
Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters
Too late, my time has come
    Sends shivers down my spine
    Body's aching all the time
Goodbye everybody I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
    Mama, oh oh
    I don't want to die
Sometimes wish I'd never been born at all
I see a little silhouetto of a man
Scaramouch, Scaramouch will you do the Fandango
Thunderbolt and lightning very very frightening me
    Gallileo (x4), figaro, magnifico
I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves me
He's just a poor boy from a poor family
Spare him his life from this monstrosity
Easy come easy go will you let me go
Bismillah, no we will not let you go, let him go
Bismillah, we will not let you go, let him go
Bismillah, we will not let you go, let me go
(Will not let you go) let me go (never, never let you go) let me go (never let me go)
    Oh oh no...
Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go
So you think you can stop me and spit in my eye
So you think you can love me and leave me to die
Oh baby can't do this to me baby...

When we were considering doing a musical reinvention of the classic Chopin composition, I felt both excitement and trepidation. This is a perfectly written piece and Michael's exquisite rendition was already so beautiful that I wondered if we could add anything without spoiling it. So we set about fusing Michael’s work with our own, while still keeping the spirit of the piece intact. A challenging — and satisfying — project!

I wrote this solo flute piece for the rain forests, concerned about how our times have been detrimental to them, and to shine a light on their importance in our world. The rain forests are being destroyed around the world at a devastating and ever-increasing pace, with far-reaching results for the health of our planet. In the piece I test the extremes of the flute’s sonic qualities, a way to show how close we are to the junction where we’ll head into an irreversible road.

We’ve all been going through difficult times, but it has also been an opportunity to be creative. For me these times was a moment to bring to life a concept and music that I have been wanting to do for a long time.. For this album, I’m going back to my more classical roots, while keeping the world music influences that I have experienced over my lifetime. In essence it’s a snapshot of my experiences, a kind of nostalgic look into the past, but also an exciting look forward, thinking about the music that still is to come. Most of the songs have been composed or co-composed by myself, so this is very much a personal story, an emotive snapshot of the world and the times we’ve lived through, more so than any previous album.

In this reimagining of the Chris Botti recording, Kelly Hall-Tompkins’ heart-breaking violin and Kellerman’s floating flute do just that, dancing together in sweet and simple honesty.

    LYRICS:

    Tell me somethin', girl
Are you happy in this modern world?
    Or do you need more?
Is there somethin' else you're searchin' for?
    I'm falling
In all the good times I find myself
    Longin' for change
And in the bad times I fear myself
    Tell me something, boy
Aren't you tired tryin' to fill that void?
    Or do you need more?
Ain't it hard keeping it so hardcore?
    I'm falling
In all the good times I find myself
    Longing for change
And in the bad times I fear myself
I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in
    I'll never meet the ground
Crash through the surface, where they can't hurt us
We're far from the shallow now
    In the shallow, shallow
    In the shallow, shallow
    In the shallow, shallow
We're far from the shallow now
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Whoah!
I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in
    I'll never meet the ground
Crash through the surface, where they can't hurt us
We're far from the shallow now
    In the shallow, shallow
    In the shallow, shallow
    In the shallow, shallow
We're far from the shallow now

Mathebethebeni is from our new album 'Symphonic Soweto - Tribute to Nelson Mandela' with the Soweto Gospel Choir.

Mathebethebeni is a man named after a beautiful, colourful bird - a metaphor for freedom and diversity. The song speaks about how his Zulu dancing is so magnificent, it brings the memories of love and happiness alive. The music video is filmed at Constitution Hill (a former prison that incarcerated Mandela, and many other public figures) - an acknowledgement of the struggle for freedom and how these memories of better times were a way to survive the harsh realities of oppression.

It is a traditional Zulu song, originally arranged for the musical film Asinamali (‘We have no money’), directed by Mbongeni Ngema and Oscar-nominated Darrell Roodt. In the original setting Nelson Mandela, while on Robben Island, is in conversation with character Msizi Dube, of whom he requests to make a sacrifice for the people. The musical arrangement is a creative journey that brings about a fusion of African and Western Classical sounds and nuances.

    TRANSLATION:
You, Mathebethebeni, when you dance your great Zulu dance
Raising your legs high in the sky
You dance so gracefully even a mouse can run beneath your feet
Without stamping on it as your feet thunder to shake the earth

Your dance is so graceful and charming
Like a young maiden when she sees her boyfriend
She hides her eyes and her body in a dark room
Whilst stealing moments at taking a glance at him

Like an old woman when she sees her old wrinkled man
She still remembers how it was to love him
She finds herself busy cleaning and shifting furniture
    Just to attract his attention

Like the old man when he sees his old lover
In excitement he touches his ancient bald head
And brushes his beard in memory of the good old days

Mathebethebeni with your song and dance
You make all these memories come alive

To Tango της Νεφέλης', or in English 'To Tango Tis Nefelis', is inspired by Greek Singer Haris Alexiou's rendition. Wouter Kellerman's storytelling flute blends beautifully with Taryn Louch's entrancing voice, telling of the cloud nymph Nefelis who is tormented by two angels jealous of her beauty. The Mighty Zeus steps in and transforms her into a cloud so she can be free from torment - a bittersweet reminder that love does not always play out as we might expect it to.
'To Tango' is from Wouter Kellerman's Grammy® nominated album, ‘Love Langauge’.

Song Lyrics: To Tango Tis Nefelis – English:
    Two little angels
    came and stole
    the golden rag
Nefeli used to wear on her head,
so as to differ from us all in the vineyard.

    Two little angels
who were dreaming of Nefeli and wanted
to feed her pomegranate and honey,
so that she could not remember, so that she would forget what she wanted,
    they managed to seduce her.

    Hyacinths and lilies
robbed her of her scent and wear it
while flying love gods laugh at her,
    throwing their arrows towards her.

    But the benevolent Zeus
takes the adolescence water away from her,
turns her into a cloud and disperses her

My long-time collaborator Wessel van Rensburg and I both love Bach’s Toccata and Fugue, so we took this opportunity to take some of Bach’s exquisitely written musical lines and put in into a brand new context. Konshens The MC added his fresh lyrics, and Lady Zamar her unique vocals, and we have an unlikely harmony!

    Lyrics

    Listen:
Music has the power to inspire, bringing us together to build and go higher,
    when it’s uniquely universal unexpected,
Plus it’s magical when the Universe selects it.
Give thanks for the chance to break barriers,
Because a divided world is much more scarier,
Rhythm rhymes, melodies is the antidote,
    That’s giving this world hope.

Time passes an’ things change just like flowers that sprout
    After a few rains
Notes reign down with sounds helping us maintain,
Providing a spark so we all have an exchange
To build up, Because together we are strong, got our will up
Together we can’t fall making them feel us,
Collaborating as one our cups are filled up
    Just so everyone has enough.

It’s these times that bind universally we shinning
See cultures collide create a movement to rise,
when Bach, flute and lyrics are intertwined,
    This music feeding your soul
That feeling can’t be denied, nah,
Across boarders and waters we recognise,
How we’re connected through beats, rhythms an’ rhymes,
I’m raisin’ rhymes on purpose, won’t be denied, look, just so we can all fly high.

    Spoken Word (Bridge):

The similarities we share is a blessing got a choice to be a change, so make the selection
Pay attention to character not complexion
To stand for something much more, in the etched in.
Get more when you love giving
Clear as a crystal bending light
Colourful as a prism the world we live in right
Don’t fear the flight heights meant to be reached
Take heed from your “Konshens” the word that it speaks
A brand new day for you and me
A brand new day for us to be free

In a world we gotta change
    Living for Better days
    Grinding for better plays,
But together we’ll make a way,
Nothing is impossible, see it, be it, achieve it.
Riding a road to greatness gotta believe it, yeah.
Don’t stop but keep going, pacing yourself,
Never to sit but keep growing being yourself
Cause that’s wealth these moments knowing that
You’re the only one that can control this so own it,
    So own it.

‘Quizás, quizás, quizás’, also known as ‘Quisas, quisas, quisas’ (Spanish for Perhaps, perhaps perhaps), is a popular song by Cuban songwriter Osvaldo Farrés. The song is a conversation between two lovers - a beloved asks her admirer if he loves her, to which he simply answers, 'Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps ... ' ????

This song really captures the passionate character of Spanish music! The three sisters in the movie ‘Tortilla Soup’ sang this song with such enthusiasm, it was impossible not to like it. ‘Tortilla Soup’ is a film about three grown sisters, Maribel, Leticia and Carmen who try to cope and live with their father Martin; a veteran chef who is slowly losing his sense of taste. Martin has one simple rule: be at home for Sunday dinner. A rift in the family develops when the sisters find love, and when an obnoxious woman sets her sights on Martin's affections.

Senegalese singer and percussionist Lamine Sonko introduced me to this song. It's basically one melody, but such a charming melody it is, and the alternative rhythmic content keeps it interesting.

'The Long Road' for Nelson Mandela by Wouter Kellerman (flute) is from the Grammy® nominated album 'Love Language'.

    Available on Bandcamp:
This is the middle section of a piece I wrote for Nelson Mandela -- as a tribute to Nelson Mandela, I wanted to paint his life with the colours of the flute.

The middle section of the piece starts when he moves to Johannesburg and the peacefulness of nature makes space for a train of events that would take control of his life and gather a momentum of its own. The percussive nature of this section indicates the runaway train of events, and the bits of the flute/vocal percussion is indicative of the influence that Ghandi's idea of peaceful resistance had in his life at the time.

You can hear the full piece here:

It starts with his childhood, growing up in rural Transkei, where he was very close to nature and spent time in the fields herding cattle. When writing the song, I was thinking of him sitting by his cattle, listening to the beautiful sounds of nature, which even then must have been tinged with a sense of sadness, showing what was to come in his life.

In the last section he retires and finally has time to spend with his family and be peaceful again. The piece ends on an unfinished note, showing that even when his life is over, his influence and memory will carry on and sustain us far into the future.

Thank you so much for watching!

'Still Life' by Wouter Kellerman from the Grammy® Nominated World Music album Love Language.

Love blossoms not just for those we meet and care for, but for great art as well. Case in point, Kellerman found himself deeply enraptured with the 2002 film Frida, which tells the story of surrealist Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Riviera. Kellerman became equally enraptured with a single, exquisite moment in the film’s soundtrack, which he re-imagines here with lush and evocative orchestration.
