  • Woody Hermans First Herd ∽ 125th STREET PROPHET ∽ Old Gold Radio Show ∽ 1944

    3:53

Have you ever heard the Herman Herd with this wonderful chart? -- No? -- Now, here's your rare chance!

Composer/ arranger Phil Moore's 125th Street Prophet unfortunately has never been waxed commercially.

It was only available on V-Disc in the mid-1940's, 'cause the version you can hear here has first been issued in 1979.

Maybe I will post the V-Disc version from August 22, 1945 later on. Till then, feel free to listen to one of the most successful big bands of the 1940's:

Woody Herman's Fabulous First Herd, the band that made Igor Stravinsky swing! (He composed Ebony Concerto for this orchestra; but that's another story.)

Chubby Jackson can be heard briefly on bass, Woody's on clarinet, and Neal Hefti - sounding here quite alike the late Sonny Berman - has a nice muted trumpet solo.

The ever tasteful Dave Tough is supporting the orchestra with his inimitable elastic drive. None of his kicks, and shots is redundant. That's how drums have to sound with a modern big band!

Enjoy the walk through New York's vintage 125th Street in the heart of Harlem.

    Uploader's note --

This very track has been transferred from the original vinyl LP which is available at many places on the internet, or at the record store of your trust:

Vol. 2, Woody Herman & His First Herd, 1944, The Uncollected, Hindsight, HSR-134.

The chart has by the way nothing to do with Lyle McDole's book 125th Street Prophet which can be purchased here:

The more one reads, the cleverer she/ he gets ... this truth applies at least to *some* folks.

    3:18

From ‘the78prof’ playlist “And Then They Added Words.” Woody’s leisurely arrangement was recorded during the time period when Artie Shaw’s swing classic ( ) was among the country’s top-selling discs. Then in 1953 the up-and-coming Eydie Gorme enjoyed her first national recording success with a different set of words, but with some similarities to the 1940 lyric:

The original 78rpm single was issued on Decca 3427 - Frenesi (Dominguez-Whitcup) by Woody Herman & his Orchestra, vocal by Woody Herman, recorded in NYC September 27, 1940

    3:22

Woody Herman & His Orchestra, Vocalist: Woody Herman - Blue Prelude (Jenkins - Bishop), Columbia 1940 (UK pressing; recorded in USA 1940)

NOTE: Woody Herman - one of the greatest names in history of American swing, was a clarinetist, saxophonist, singer and big band leader. He lived actively and successfully through several eras of American jazz in the 20s Century: beginning in the mid 1930s with Tom Gerun's and Harry Sosnik's dance orchestras, through the Big Band era of the 1940/50s, and until the turn of the 1970/80s, when he devoted himself rather to the workshops end education of younger musicians. During his long career he led various groups called The Herd (One, Two, Three Herd which played until the end of 1950s, and were followed in 1960-80s by various editions of the last one, billed as The New Thundering Herd). His bands often played music that was experimental for its time. Woody Herman died in 1987, having become the Jazz Legend forever.

BIO by Scott Yanow ( )
...Sal Nistico's explosive tenor solos with Woody Herman in the mid-'60s helped make that edition of Herman's Herd into a success. Originally an altoist, Nistico switched to tenor in 1956 and played with RB bands for 3 years. He gigged with and made his recording debut in 1959-1960 with the Jazz Brothers, a band also including Chuck & Gap Mangione. But it was while with Herman in 1962-1965 that Nistico made history. In 1965, he spent 5mos. with Count Basie. He returned to Basie in 1967 and to Herman on several occasions (1968-1970, 1971, 1981-1982). Otherwise, tenorist freelanced throughout his career, playing with Don Ellis & Buddy Rich, but mostly working with pick-up groups. Nistico recorded for several labels as a leader including Riverside, Red, and Beehive.
