    Arditti String Quartet

Apart from the 11-bar Adagio section and some short ritardandi (which soon turn into accelerandi), this quartet in one movement is to be played presto possibile. The first bar presents the motivic seed on which the entire piece is based; constantly subjected to variation, it occasionally appears in the mask of a lyrical melody – in the viola, for instance – while the other instruments play rapid, richly accentuated passages.

  • Wolfgang Rihm - Lichtes Spiel

    17:16

    Year of composition: 2009

The title of Lichtes Spiel might be translated as Light Game or Light Play, and may be taken as a pun on the German expression leichtes Spiel, meaning an easy job; or what we might call Child's Play. Wolfgang Rihm has said that he intended it as a transparent orchestral movement... something light, but not 'lightweight'. The result, which uses instrumental forces of Mozartian proportions, is a detailed, finely wrought score in which the composer provides fine-tuned indications of how practically every note is to be articulated.

Instructions for tempo and mood are similarly precise. For example, the notation governing the opening section: Un poco sostenuto, non troppo lento, poco à poco più scorrendo (A bit sustained, not too slow, bit by bit more scurrying). It is the sort of directive one sometimes finds in Beethoven, particularly in his late works.

A fair amount of variety is incorporated into this work as well, and extends to its dynamics, which occasionally reach a point of relative loudness -- most notably in a passage marked Allegro, un poco pesante (Fast, rather heavy) about three-quarters of the way through. Nonetheless, high volume is a rarity in this piece, which is overwhelmingly skewed toward the quiet end of the sonic spectrum. In fact, the overriding dynamic indication would appear to be pianissimo: the work begins and ends at this very quiet level, and it returns throughout as a sort of reference point from which the music may depart but to which it always returns.

Tenebrae | Wolfgang Rihm: Sieben Motetten nach Passionstexten | Carlo Gesualdo: Responsorien zur Karwoche (Auswahl) | St. Maria, Schwetzingen, Mai 2018 im Rahmen der Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele

    Tenebrae

  • Wolfgang Rihm - Verwandlung 3

    9:35

    Verwandlung 3, for orchestra
    Conductor - Matthias Pintscher
    Date Written - 2007-2008

As in much of Rihm's recent music, this ongoing series of orchestral pieces [Verwandlungen] exemplify the ideology-free, emotionally expressive above all idiom that the composer has increasingly adopted since the 1990s. In practice, this results in a vocabulary that derives a great deal from late Mahler and early Schoenberg in terms of harmony -a contemporary rediscovery, in a sense, of Romantic ideals. Rihm frequently speaks of his recent music in terms of emotion and eroticism rather than espousing particular technical devices or compositional systems. The constant flow of organic ideas also recalls Sibelius, but it is to Mahler that the ear's memory is constantly drawn; sweeping string melodic figures, military drums intruding on a pastoral landscape, suggestions of peasant ländler, apocalyptic outbursts of rage and sudden triumphant (and unexpectedly tonal) resolutions to tense musical argument. Rihm's overall vocabulary is less explicitly tonal than his models of a century ago, but the underlying sensibility is remarkably similar, and equally emotionally cathartic.

    10:34

    Buy / Stream:

Wolfgang Rihm, one of the foremost contemporary composers, has created a powerful body of music for the violin. Gesungene Zeit is one of his most performed works, and it demonstrates why Rihm is so admired: music that begins and ends in ethereal lines while embracing agitation and threnody alike. The beautifully transparent and sensuous Lichtes Spiel is ‘light, but not lightweight’ in the composer’s words, and COLL’ARCO takes the soloist to the extremes of virtuosity in his largest concertante work for the violin, teeming with reminiscences, intricacy and drama. Volume 1 can be heard on 8.573812.

  • Wolfgang Rihm - Musik für Oboe und Orchester

    16:23

    SWR Sinfonieorchester BadenBaden und Freiburg
    2007

Music for Oboe and Orchestra is the unpretentious, dispassionate title Wolfgang Rihm gave the oboe concerto in 1993-94 for his fellow professor in Karlsruhe, Thomas Indermühle, and which was commissioned by the Stuttgart Philharmonic. The concerto plays on the ambiguity inherent in the history of the genre, allows surprising reminiscences of pastoral or serenade-like yesterdays shimmer through and then comes under destructive gears of positively scenic clarity by having the oboe and the orchestra boost one another up from a stage of “frolicsome” merriment occasionally slipping into the trivial (together with a hidden quote from one of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances) into an ever more threatening process (“as if overwound”, “wild and funny”, “ever more grimly”, hunted”, “frantic” are the performance instructions), that can only end in collapse.

  • Wolfgang Rihm Gejagte Form

    16:20

    Wolfgang Rihm (1952)
Gejagte Form (version 1995/1996), pour orchestre
    Composition : 1995/1996.
    Commande : Ensemble Modern.
Création : le 13 avril 1996 à Philadelphie, State College Penn State University, par l'Ensemble Modern sous la direction

» (Wolfgang Rihm)

  • Wolfgang Rihm: Dionysos

    4:06

The world premiere of Dionysos, which opened the 2010 Salzburg Festival, was also the outstanding highlight of the festival that year, tellingly presented in a production staged by Pierre Audi with settings designed by Jonathan Meese and conducted by Ingo Metzmacher. Composer Wolfgang Rihm had written an artist's opera, inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's late poetic work. Dionysos follows the figure of N., a combination
of Dionysos, Marsyas and Nietzsche himself, unfolding a kaleidoscope of images -- and almost Dionysian mysteries. The documentary film reveals the creative process that resulted in the opera and follows Nietzsche's traces into the mountainous world of the Engadin, where he had once developed his philosophy.
