  • Johnny Dyani : Ntyilo Ntyilo

    5:22

This beautiful song, Ntyilo Ntyilo (Xhosa: Little Bird) is from the 1978 album 'Witchdoctor's Son, bassist-vocalist Johnny Dyani in duet with guitarist Alfredo Nascimento. It is a true South African classic, one a small group of 'evergreens' that any local artist with jazz pretensions must include in their repertoire. It was written by Alan Silinga expressly for Miriam Makeba who first recorded it with the Manhattan Brothers in 1954. Miriam's solo rendition on her first American album in 1960 put it on the world map and since that time many other versions have been cut by artists as diverse as Hugh Masekela and Pharoah Sanders. As for the song's meaning, composer Silinga can only say that it is about a bird singing sweetly and inviting the listener to that happier place called heaven.

Johnny Mbizo Dyani (1945-1986), of South Africa, was from a musical family and began playing the piano and singing in a traditional choir at an early age. At 13, he switched to bass, but would use both voice and piano later on. Chris McGregor hired him for the Blue Notes after hearing him play with pianist Tete Mbambiza; the group left the country in 1964, playing first at the Antibes Jazz Festival, then in Zurich, London, and Copenhagen. In 1966, Dyani toured Argentina with Steve Lacy's quartet, recording The Forest and the Zoo (ESP). In 1970, he played in Don Cherry's trio with Okay Temiz, and sat in with McCoy Tyner in New York. He worked with Abdullah Ibrahim and Alan Shorter (Tes Esat, 1970), and formed his own Earthquake Power in 1971. The following year, Dyani co-founded Xaba with Mongezi Feza and Temiz. He became very active on the European scene, playing with Irene Schweizer, Han Bennink, and with visiting American free jazz musicians such as David Murray, Leo Smith, Joseph Jarman, and Don Moye. His Witchdoctor's Son band made records with Dudu Pukwana and John Tchicai for Steeplechase, and with Swedish and Brazilian musicians for Cadillac (Witchdoctor's Son Together, 1980). His quartet featured guests Don Cherry (Song for Biko, Steeplechase), Pukwana (Mbizo, Steeplechase 1981), and Butch Morris (Grandmother's Teaching, Jam). He recorded in duo with drummer Clifford Jarvis (African Bass, Red 1979), and his septet/octet recorded two albums with Charles Davis (Afrika and Born Under the Heat, both released in 1983). Detail was his '80s trio with John Stevens and saxophonist Frode Gjerstad, and Detail Plus featured Bobby Bradford on cornet. His 1985 album Angolian Cry (Steeplechase) was of a quartet with trumpeter Harry Beckett and Tchicai. A year later, Johnny Dyani died suddenly after a performance in Berlin, his loss mourned deeply by all who knew him.

  • Abdullah Ibrahim & Johnny Dyani : Namhanje

    17:02

Recorded in 1979, 'Namhanje' (Today) is a duet featuring Abdullah Ibrahim (piano, voice) and Johnny Dyani (bass, voice). The piece was released as part of an Enja recording title 'Echoes From Africa'.

Pianist-composer-bandleader Abdullah Ibrahim, formerly known as Dollar Brand, was born in 1934 in Cape Town, South Africa. His music reflects many of the musical influences of his childhood in the multicultural port areas of Cape Town, ranging from traditional African songs to the gospel of the AME Church and ragas, to more modern jazz and other Western styles. Ibrahim is considered the leading figure in the sub-genre, Cape Jazz.

Johnny Mbizo Dyani (bassist and vocalist) was born in 1945 in Duncan Village, a township of the South African city of East London. In the early 1960s, Dyanni was a member of South Africa's first integrated jazz band, The Blue Notes. In 1964, the band fled South Africa to seek musical and political freedom. Drummer Louis Moholo explained, We were rebels and we were trying to run away from this apartheid thing. We rebelled against the apartheid regime that whites and blacks couldn't play together. We stood up. Johnny Dyani died in 1986 at the age of forty. After his death, the remaining members of The Blue Notes reunited to record a moving tribute album, entitled 'Blue Notes For Johnny'.

The photographs are from many places in Africa including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mali, Kenya, among others. My appreciation to all the photographers. This video is for educational purposes and to honor the work of the artists.

  • Robert Plant - HQ Audio Live

    4:10

Robert Plant Announces Carry Fire Tour of North America
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - British singer Robert Plant, a key figure in legendary band Led Zeppelin, today announced details of a tour of the United States and Canada to promote his latest solo album Carry Fire.
The 12-concert tour set for 2018 kicks off Feb. 9 at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium in North Carolina and ends on March 2 at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles.
Between both dates and venues, Plant will promote its single solo album with performances in the cities of Charlotte, Norfolk, New York, Boston, Toronto, Chicago and Minneapolis.
Then there are the presentations in Denver, Phoenix and Oakland.
Carry Fire will be released on October 13 under the Nonesuch / Warner label, which is also responsible for global promotion and distribution, and marks the return of the Brit to the market after his 2014 album Lullaby And ... The Ceaseless Roar.

Robert Plant led Led Zeppelin until its disintegration in 1980, since then it carries out a successful solo race alternated with its passage by other alignments like Priory of Brion, Robert Plant and his Strange Sensations, and Sensantional Space Shifters, with which Carry Fire worked .
London, Sep 4 (PL) The legendary singer of the late Led Zeppelin band Robert Plant just released the single Bones of Saints, the second preview of their upcoming album Carry Fire, today stand out specialized media.

The new song follows the premiere of The May Queen, the first single from the previously announced Plant label to be released on October 13 under the Nonesuch / Warner label, also in charge of global promotion and distribution.
According to the critics Bones of Saints shows a Plant that honors its wood of rocker, and it goes away a little of the line folk that points the sonority of The May Queen.

Both singles mark the return to the arena of the mythical singer who did not publish new material since 2014, when he released his eleventh studio album Lullaby And ... The Ceaseless Roar.

Robert Plant led Led Zeppelin until its disintegration in 1980, since then it carries out a successful solo race alternated with its passage by other alignments like Priory of Brion, Robert Plant and his Strange Sensations, and Sensantional Space Shifters, with which works Carry Fire .

Together with his current band, The Sensational Space Shifters, Robert Plant continues exploring an amalgamation of sounds that goes from country to Celtic music, but anchored in its rock identity. This will be reflected in Carry fire, the eleventh disc of his solo career, four years of the acclaimed Lullaby and ... The Ceaseless Roar, scheduled for release on October 13th.

As advance, the vocalista presented two subjects. The May Queen, close to American country music, released in mid-August, and Bones of Saints, a Rock & Roll released earlier this month.

We could say that Plant's voice, which has just turned off 69 candles, remains intact, but no; improved over time. He is a mature singer, who accompanied - not seconded - by The Sensational Space Shifters, rounds out a forceful sound that confirms the validity of who for many will remain the singer of Led Zeppelin, but which, however, already has its own name as soloist.

The album, produced by himself, has the collaboration of the outstanding Albanian cellist Redi Hasa and the talented English multi-instrumentalist Seth Lakeman. In addition, singer Chrissie Hynde - The Pretenders - joins Robert to reverse the classic Bluebirds over the mountain.

Recorded between Wales and England, Carry fire counts in total with 11 songs and will be accompanied by a tour. Will he return to Argentina?

There is less time for Robert Plant's record return. Led Zeppelin's former singer will release Carry Fire on October 13, becoming his tenth solo album and successor to the excellent Lullaby And The Ceaseless Roar (2014).
To continue showing part of the material, and with the previous advances of The May Queen and Bones Of Saints, now the British musician shared a third single of the production, Bluebirds Over the Mountain, original of the mythical Ersel Hickey. The theme features a string of string arrangements and also has the collaboration of Chrissie Hynde, the legendary songwriter, vocalist and guitarist for The Pretenders.
