Upcoming Artists: The Truth About The Shure SM7B

    4:36

In this video, Hayden Jamal reviews the Shure SM7B based on the myriad of projects that he has actually created with it. This take is more from a practical, home studio, upcoming artist perspective and not one who has huge recording budgets.

Within this video, you will find references to Logic (the rapper), the breakfast club, Michael Jackson, Sampha and many others. The main problem with this microphone is the microphone hiss. Because the Shure SM7b is a dynamic microphone, it requires a lot of gain to power it adequately. Most preamps that you can buy from a guitar center will not possess the necessary gain for this microphone, thus the hissing gets into your hiss.

Hayden Jamal talks about how you can achieve a quality sound with a Shure SM7B with the use of a cloudlifter. A cloudlifter is definitely worth it if you have the money, but if you are looking for home studio recording, you can put that same amount of money into a different microphone altogether and don't have to worry about the microphone hiss.

Other things talked about in this video are gain staging and noise floor. Remember, no microphone will sound good unless the area has some treatment.

MIC WARS | SHURE SM7B vs. ASTON STEALTH

    5:49

The SHURE SM7B vs. the ASTON STEALTH

The legendary Shure SM7B has a frequency response of 50Hz to 20KHz, and a price tag of $399.

The Aston Stealth has a frequency response of 20Hz to 20KHz, and a price tag of $399.

Both of these dynamic microphones require A LOT of gain, a minimum of 60 db. So, for the SM7B we will use the Cloudlifter mic pre-amp, and for the Stealth we will use it's integrated mic pre-amp.

Which of these microphones will win round 1? Legend vs. neoteric. Shure vs. Aston!

    Let's start...

    Cannonball Cover- Damien Rice

    4:41

Acoustic cover of Cannonball by Damien Rice. Damien Rice is one of my favorite artists, and Cannonball is one of his best songs; this is my acoustic cover -- and personal take -- on that song. This was recorded using a Komplete Audio 6 Interface, Aston Spirit Microphone, and a Taylor 614ce. This is my first time recording with the Aston Spirit, and I must say, I am a huge fan of Aston microphones now. It is clear that Aston put a lot of time and effort into making a great microphone at a great price. The Aston Spirit pairs well with the Komplete Audio 6 interface as well. Enjoy.

Aston Stealth Dynamic Microphone VS Guitar & Vocals - Review & Demo

    10:27

We test the Aston Stealth with vocals, acoustic and electric guitars!

In this video, Sam takes a look at the new Aston Stealth, a broadcast quality dynamic mic with switchable voicings and built in class-A pre-amp. Check it out here:

The Stealth is the latest addition to the Aston microphone range, joining the award winning Spirit, Origin and Starlight. But whereas those previous models have all been condenser microphones, the Stealth is unique, as it’s Aston’s first dynamic mic. To expand on that, it’s a broadcast quality, moving coil dynamic microphone with a cardioid polar pickup pattern, so it’s comparable with mics such as the EV RE20 or Shure SM7B, but unlike those models, it’s got a few innovative tricks up it’s sleeve that really set it apart from pretty much any other microphone currently available.

Aston have designed the Stealth to be, in their words, the most versatile microphone in the world, but they’re also keen to emphasise that it’s not just a jack of all trades. In the studio it will easily compete with any condenser microphones, it’s an ideal choice for podcasters or voice over artists, as you can hear, I’m talking through it now, and because it’s a dynamic mic, it’s less susceptible to feedback and much tougher than a condenser, so it’s equally at home in a live environment. The main feature that makes this mic so versatile is it’s choice of voicings, there’s two for vocals, one for guitars and a “dark” setting, which offers a kinda vintage tone, reminiscent to that of a classic ribbon mic. Now these different voice settings aren’t just applying EQ filters, they actually switch between 4 totally different circuits, so it truly is like having 4 different mics in one.

It’s actually pretty interesting the way that Aston design their microphones, instead of just a small team of people creating a mic from start to finish, at various stages of development they’ll refer to what they call the Aston 33, that’s a panel of experts which actually now consists of over 90 top flight recording engineers, producers and front of house engineers. The 4 voicings on the Stealth were developed through a series of blind tests with this panel, resulting in the V1 voicing being voted most suitable for the timbre of a male voice, V2 the preferred choice for female vocals, and the voicing that eventually became the guitar setting was the most popular vote for rather surprisingly, all types of guitars, be it classical, steel strung acoustic or an amped up electric guitar.

Being a dynamic mic, the Stealth doesn’t require Phantom Power to work in passive mode, but if do switch on 48v on your desk, it does something pretty unique, as the mic automatically senses that phantom power is available and switches to active mode, activating it’s onboard pre-amp.

Most people who want to use a dynamic mic such as the Shure SM7 as a studio mic, will often opt to buy an additional mic pre-amp, something like a cloudlifter device, to cleanly boost the signal for recording, but this will be at an extra cost of between £100 to £150 pounds. The Stealth however features a built in class A pre-amp which is powered by 48 volts, boosting the signal and greatly improving the signal to noise performance, without the need for an external device. Plus, when in active mode, two purple LEDs are turned at the bottom of the mic, which obviously don’t do anything to improve the sound quality, but you have to admit they look pretty awesome.

Just like all of their other mics, the Stealth has been designed and built right here in the UK to Aston’s near-indestructible standards, it feels really tough and sturdy, so it’ll handle even the most demanding of live or studio environments. It features a cleverly engineered internal shock mount system that utilises sorbothane polymer hemispheres to dampen vibrations and handling noise, and this negates the need for an external shock mount cradle. An internal pop filter reduces the effect of those pesky plosive P’s and B’s without having to use an additional pop screen, and the design of the Stealth’s differential drive path offers excellent rejection of electromagnetic interference and hum, something you definitely want if you’re a podcaster or bedroom studio user where you might have nearby computer monitors. Finally, the Stealth comes supplied with a specially designed quick release mic clip, which makes it much easier to attach the microphone to a stand and adjust it’s angle, when compared to conventional clip or cradle for a mic of this type.

And in this corner, the next generation Aston Stealth. A broadcast and studio quality dynamic microphone. It has a frequency response of 20Hz to 20KHz and a price tag of $399.

Both of these dynamic microphones require A LOT of gain, a minimum of 60 db. So, for the SM7B we will use the Cloudlifter mic pre-amp, and for the Stealth we will use it's integrated mic pre-amp.

In this battle I will read Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe, and seamlessly switch between the microphones.

Which of these microphones will survive round 2?

The legend vs. the neoteric. David vs. Goliath. Dynamic vs. Dynamic!

    Let's start...

    THE MIC WAR!

(((Once the MIC WAR starts the microphone/audio track you see on-screen is the mic you are hearing)))

Which microphone won this battle? VOTE in the comments!

BEN WILLIAMS GROWS UP ON NEW ALBUM COMING OF AGE

INCLUDES VERSIONS OF NIRVANA’S “SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT” AND LIANNE LA HAVAS’ “LOST & FOUND”

ALBUM AVAILABLE ON CD AND VINYL

Acclaimed bassist Ben Williams delivers his sophomore album titled Coming of Age, April 21, 2015, on CD and vinyl via Concord Jazz. Continuing to implore the common elements of jazz, hip-hop, rock and soul, the young bandleader embarks on a bolder journey in this album with more music by his own hand and a reflection of his new outlook as a seasoned musician. Coming of Age for the 30-year-old Williams means playing a lively role among his peers and a vital part in the music world at large. Winner of the 2009 Monk Institute Competition, Williams cites this as a turning point in his musical odyssey, “My career as a bandleader and composer started from the moment I won,” he says. “I had this opportunity to say something—and an obligation, too.” The CD and vinyl are now available for pre-order on Amazon (CD and vinyl

Revered by The Washington Post as “Successfully translating the musical pulse of his era into jazz,” Williams has secured a masterful selection of special guests featured on this project. They include renowned jazz trumpeter Christian Scott on the cover of Lianne La Havas’ melancholy “Lost & Found” that is draped by a string quartet, vibraphonist Stefon Harris on an original piece titled “The Color of My Dreams,” and emcee/poet W. Ellington Felton who leads the listener through “Toy Soldiers (reprise).” Williams also reconnects with American soul singer Goapele for a second collaboration with the pivotal anthem “Voice of Freedom (for Mandela).” Completing the vision is Williams band, Sound Effect, comprised of Marcus Strickland (tenor and soprano saxophone), Matthew Stevens (guitar), Christian Sands (piano and Fender Rhodes), Masayuki “Big Yuki” Hirano (synths and Fender Rhodes), John Davis (drums) and Etienne Charles (percussion).

1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard Scarface | CME Vintage Demo

    5:14

Here at CME, we have the honor and privilege of curating and playing many amazing instruments. Every so often though, something comes along that stops us all in our tracks and leaves us speechless. That's exactly what happened when we first opened up the brown Stone case and laid our eyes on the absolutely stunning top on this incredible Burst that we're ironically calling scarface. It earned that nickname because a previous owner (who undoubtedly was a Jimmy Page fan) decided to add an onboard fuzz circuit to the underside of the pickguard which was bulky enough that it required the removal of a small portion of the top in order for it to fit. Fortunately, in July of 1988, a very skilled luthier did a tremendous job of reverting the beauty back as close to its original cosmetic condition as possible by placing a piece of maple which matched the surrounding grain very well into where it was once removed. This repair is completely invisible under the pickguard. No photograph really does justice to the figured top of this guitar, although it does look great in the popular book Beauty of the 'Burst.

Equally as impressive as this guitar's gorgeous looks are its effortless playability, the impressive resonance of the aged woods, and the astounding sound of the PAF pickups through a good tube amp. It's no wonder why this guitar has become the standard that so many builders have based their solid body models on. It's also no surprise that this year and model instrument was used by seminal artists on timeless recordings such as Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton.

    ▶ #RECORDINGWAGON
Part of our vision is to create new opportunities. and the only way to create new opportunities is to do something no one has done before. #recordingwagon is our way of doing something new. our studio is state of the art, although that isn’t the ultimate point. sure, great gear can make your life easier, but making great music isn’t necessarily about who has the best hardware – our philosophy is about creating something amazing with what you have, no matter where you are. and, being a wagon, it’s portable. we are not limited to any four walls on the planet – if we need new inspiration we simply move our facilities to the best suitable area. creating and recording music will never be the same again.
