#CLA MixHub is a Channel Strip very similar to the Waves #SSL E Channel but distributed in a similar way to Scheps Omni Channel. It has been modeled from the #console of Chris Lord Alge with the addition of some very useful processors and an unprecedented improvement for the in-the-box workflow that we will explain in the second half of this video.

    Direct link:

To begin with, Waves has decided to put separate buttons for saturation and noise ending once and for all with the speculations on the analog button used previously. ANALOG controls the analog saturation and NOISE controls only the noise. Of course, to hear the saturation created when ANALOG is activated, it is necessary to drive the input signal.

LINE controls the level of the input signal, adjusting this to levels close to 0db according to the internal meter of the plugin brings out the character of Chris's console. MIC has been created to generate even more distortion, similar to when the preamps are oversaturated.

One of the most visible changes compared to the SSL E-Channel plugin is that the filters are now located in the INPUT module but the operation is the same. To learn about the proper functioning of an SSL E-Channel please see our video How to use Waves SSL E-Channel

The next module is the EQ and it works exactly the same as the SSL E-Channel. The only differences are the addition of a solo button that allows isolating the frequency bands to more easily search for resonant areas and, like Scheps Omni Channel, all the modules can be expanded to be used in STEREO, DUAL MONO or MID-SIDE.

The compressor module maintains the same scheme of the SSL E Channel but has added the possibility of selecting between the classic SSL channel compressor and a CLA-76 (the area will turn blue). A DUCKER was added to the GATE/EXPANDER circuit which we will see in a next video and COMP MIX which is nothing more than a WET/DRY knob to process the compression module in parallel. An EXTERNAL SIDECHAIN option has also been added. The other option is the traditional possibility of moving the EQ out of the signal circuit and using it to shape the sidechain signal received by the compressor.

The rest of the channel is easy to understand: REVERSE exchanges the L-R channels. EXTRA WIDE is a stereo expander and FILTER has been added to help keep the frequencies below 200 Hz mono compatible when EXTRA WIDE is in use. (sorry, the screen capture software failed in this part).

Now, the real advantage of this plugin is that it is possible to insert one in each track and have them communicate with each other and appear in blocks of up to 8 at the same time in the same screen to simulate the workflow of an analog console. For this example we will select the 8 most relevant channels of the drums and we will insert CLA Mix Hub in them. Then we will open any of the instances, change to BUCKET VIEW and rename the first bucket to Drums. Then we return to CHANNEL VIEW and open each one of the plugins and where it says ASSIGN TO BUCKET we select Drums. Now when we return to BUCKET VIEW we will see the INPUT modules of all 8 instances side by side.

Now you will have realized that we can only see the first module of each instance. In the upper right part it says INPUT, EQ, DYN and OUTPUT. Click on one of them and automatically all the modules will change to the selected type.

  • WAVES : CLA Guitars

This is a plug-in that I use everyday. It's basically a shell for a stack of Waves plugs that Chris Lord-Alge, one of the world's greatest ever engineers and producers, uses. They'll never tell me what those individual plugins or settings are and frankly, I don't care, because this interface takes all the guess work out of setting them correctly anyway. In fact, for the stuff I do, it's a godsend.

When you hear one of my demo videos for any given pedal you are hearing as close an approximation as I can make to the sound pressure level and ambience of my little room with a raging amp in it. A mic slammed right up close to the speaker won't do this on its own so use the compression and reverb sliders on the CLA Guitars plug to do it for me. I leave both flat and I get that perfect small room compression and reflection that has been widely accepted as 'pretty good' by you guys.

The CLA Guitars plug has other features and qualities too. It has three killer amp sims built in - clean, crunch and heavy - that have probably been lifted from the GTR plug. These coupled with the slider algorithms give you a ton of very cool sounds. This is what I'm demonstrating today. Have a listen and see what you think.

  • Waves CLA Drums - The Definitive Guide

The Definitive Guide on how to use the Waves CLA Drums plugin. We'll look at the interface, analyze what it actually does, and mix a full drum track. TIME CODE BELOW ⬇⬇⬇

The Chris Lord-Alge Drums plugin is basically a channel strip made just for drums. It has separate modes for each drum: Kick, Snare, Toms, Overhead Mics, Room Mics, and COWBELL! The Cowbell mode is for cymbals, hi-hat, bells, anything like that.

Each mode has custom EQ shapes and compression that work perfectly for each type of drum. Watch the 'How it Works' section to see the difference between the EQ shapes of each mode.

One thing to note is that the CLA Drums plugin is meant for the multi-track of each drum, meaning the combined track of all the Snare mics, the combined track of the overheads mics, etc... You could of course use it on the single mic tracks, but there is no mono to mono plugin. The CLA Drums plugin is available as a Stereo or Mono to Stereo plugin.

Mixing with the CLA Drums plugin is quick and easy. Select the proper mode, adjust a few faders, and you're done. Once you understand how it works, you can mix a full drum kit in about 10 minutes.

    CLA Guitars direct link:

#CLA #Guitars simulates a chain of processes commonly used and tuned to work on most guitar tracks. It also includes three amp and cab simulators for the three basic types of tones: Clean, Crunch and Distortion. To better understand the differences, it is better to adjust the input gain to the level suggested by the designer, but this is a rule that can be broken as we will see later.

When Re-Amplify is OFF, the modes simulate effects and hardware chains that would commonly be applied to a guitar recorded through an amp with one or more microphones.

The BYPASS mode can be completely transparent in its default position, it can be used for acoustic guitars or to create an incredible pop tone from the 80s. Of course to be transparent we'll have to turn off the effects and match the output level. In this mode, Re-Amplify does not seem to have any effect although it seems to us that the effects are readjusted for this type of sound therefore it is worth experimenting with Re-Amplify in BYPASS mode (not to be confused with the general BYPASS of the plugin).

When Re-Amplify is activated in a mode other than BYPASS the plugin will also simulate the sound of a guitar amp, cabinet and mics which allows you to record with the guitar directly connected to the preamp of your interface. In these cases it is important that the input gain is adjusted correctly since it affects the characteristic saturations of each style and the compression amount of COMPRESS but as we said before this rule can be broken, for example... You can reduce the compression by lowering COMPRESS but if you want even less without turning it off completely simply reduce the input gain. This will also reduce the amp breakup but none of the other processes will be significantly affected. Just use your ears...

COMPRESS has three styles: PUSH makes the guitar sound more full and present, SPANK sounds more funky and increases the transients and WALL which is aggressive compression with minimum dynamics very useful for background guitars...

The BASS and TREBLE controls are wide and shallow as is common in guitar mixes. Each one has three positions in the frequency spectrum: SUB that can, LOWER and UPPER for bass and BITE, TOP and ROOF for highs... With these 6 positions it covers all the useful area of the guitar, all are good for boosting or cutting. SUB controls the lowest area (reduce in accompanying guitars and increase in solo guitars Leo Brouwer style). LOWER and UPPER are felt more than heard (try boosting in both positions until the guitar acquires weight and presence in the mix or reduce them in accompanying guitars). As we said these controls are extremely wide so expect a molding effect, not a surgical effect. BITE controls the area where the aggressiveness of the guitar lies, TOP and ROOF enter the bright and expensive zone but they can be annoying and increase cable noise. For example we can reduce BITE and increase LOWER to achieve the pasty sound of jazz guitars.

REVERB consists of three types. CLUB is a short and intimate reverb, HALL is an average reverb similar to the sound of a theater and ARENA is the stadium sound used in heavy rock guitars and there is no way to make them sound bad.

DELAY is synchronized to the BPM of your DAW. EIGHT is a short delay used to fatten the guitar without making it very obvious, EDGE is U2 of course and QUARTER is the delay that repeats each phrase and is very common in guitar solos. The delay effect is stereo wide (no ping pong) and when changing from one speed to another the change is gradual as in an analog delay.

PITCH contains 3 different settings to expand the sound in the stereo field. Although they all sound different they are probably all based on the same popular Eventide H3000 patch that slightly changes the pitch of each channel at the same time and advances and delays them respectively. If we increase PITCH in the BYPASS mode and equalize a DI guitar so that it sounds clean and bright with a little SPANK we will achieve the most used sound in pop music of the 80s. Pure Prince and MJ #style!

With the CRUNCH mode we can achieve a Dumble or Vibro Fender sound quite clear as SRV.

If we turn off Re-Amplify all modes become similar to BYPASS, each with its differences which makes them very useful to find the sound we are looking for, regardless of the styles that suggest their names.

This video demonstrates that sometimes experimentation can lead you to discovering ways of doing things that are outside the box. I never would have thought that using CLA Gutiars on my vocals would have ever worked, but it did. And to go a little bit farther, all I did was load the plugin up and leave all the filters and effects in the OFF position. It seemed to give the vocal a bit more presence and take away the chunky bottom end. This is just a starting point but it seemed to work a LOT better than other options I tried.

  • Waves CLA Unplugged: Martin OM28E

I had cause to fire up the Martin with a decent microphone today. So I thought I'd give the Waves CLA Unplugged a shot as well as I've been a BIG fan of CLA Guitars for years and have used it in over 600 demos. The Unplugged plug-in is great as well. Here you'll here the difference between it being added and taken away. I've gone for some subtle compression, a little top end, some bottom end rolloff and two types of reverb with a little slap delay. All of this and more is delivered courtesy of the CLA Unplugged plug-in. Stick your headphones on for the real picture.

Using Waves J37 Tape MAchine to create modulation:

    Direct link:

DIRECT turns on and off the direct signal and is very important because as we will see some of these processes are in parallel and others are inserts. For example, #EQ and #DISTORTION are inserts, meaning they directly affect the direct signal and are used to enhance or destroy the base tone. When we turn off DIRECT, nothing is heard even if EQ and DIST are on. This is because EQ and DIST are part of the direct signal chain. By the way, when all the processors are off, the DIRECT signal is completely transparent which allows this plugin to be used in any type of instrument or voice.

EQ consists of three modes: TOP is a complex EQ curve that specifically allows to increase the clarity, presence and air or reduce the whole area of high frequencies. The central position is neutral. FILTER is a combination of HPF and LPF that can be used to recreate the distance from the listener (front-rear). The effect can be a bit exaggerated for leads but it is ideal for sounds that go in the background. TELEPHONE is the same as FILTER but includes a boost in the center to compensate for the frequencies cut by the filters and make it easier to distinguish in a multitude of other sounds.

DISTORTION has three modes that range from the softest to the noisiest distortion: DRIVE, CRUNCH and FUZZ. All three shape the frequency response in their own way and can be useful for adlib tracks and minor instruments.

The next four processors work in parallel. If we turn off DIRECT we can hear them in complete isolation which is the typical configuration when using this plugin in send/return tracks.

The three reverb modes are ROOM, the sound of a small area such as an expensive recording studio, HALL, a large room like a theater and CANYON, an area where sound takes its time to go and return.

SHORT DLY and LONG DLY are two delays and you wonder, why two? SHORT is a normal delay with three speeds synced to the DAW and is used to fatten and give depth to the base sound: SLAP, EIGHTS and DOTTED EIGHTHS. When we turn on LONG DLY we do not hear anything, this is the main reason to have two delays. In the upper left corner we have SND LONG DLY which is a bypass switch to turn on/off the signal sent to the second delay. HOLD permanently activates the send that goes to LONG DLY converting it into a process similar to SHORT DLY. Now we can see that the difference with SHORT DLY is in the delay times: QUARTER, HALF and FULL or WHOLE notes. These long times are more useful for effects such as repeating the words at the end of phrases, commonly achieved through automation. That is why it is better to activate this delay through the momentary switch. You can assign an automation track in touch mode to this control and while the song is playing activate THROW on each word you want to be repeated and record the changes in the automation track.

PITCH consists of three #modulation methods used to fatten and widen the spatial projection. When the direct signal is off the effect will be difficult to hear since modulation effects usually take advantage of the combination with the original sound. TAPE PHASE is the most subtle of all, it sounds like when we used the tape wow and flutter to create modulation ( CHORUS has traditionally been created with a bucket brigade chip to create small variations in pitch that are then combined with the original signal to create the chorus. MR. WIDE seems to be a process similar to Waves Doubler and Soundtoys Microshift.
