  • Edward Elgar

    3:46

    Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934) - arr. John Cameron:
    LUX AETERNA (NIMROD)

Sir Edward William Elgar was an English composer. He is known for such works as the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, The Dream of Gerontius, concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies. He also composed oratorios, chamber music and songs. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.

This piece is an arrangement of Nimrod, the 9th variation from Elgar's Enigma Variations (1899). There are 14 variations, each cryptically labeled for a friend, often by initials. Nimrod was for his friend August Jaeger, a music editor who had offered steady encouragement and frank criticism early in Elgar’s composing career. Jäger is German for hunter, and Nimrod was the Old Testament's mighty hunter before the Lord. It is easily the best known of the variations and is often played at solemn ceremonies.

John Cameron (b. 1944) arranged the variation for choir in 1996.

    Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine,
    cum sanctis tuis in aeternum,
    quia pius es.
    Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
    et lux perpetua luceat eis.

May eternal light shine upon them, O Lord,
    with your saints in eternity,
    for you are merciful.
Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,
and let eternal light shine upon them.

    Voces8 (2012)

This is the original piece by Elgar, conducted by Daniel Barenboim and played by Chicago Symphony Orchestra:

  • VOCES8: Sleep by Eric Whitacre

    5:08

VOCES8 performs 'Sleep' by Eric Whitacre in St Stephen Walbrook Church in London.

The evening hangs beneath the moon,
A silver thread on darkened dune.
With closing eyes and resting head
I know that sleep is coming soon.

Upon my pillow, safe in bed,
A thousand pictures fill my head.
    I cannot sleep, my mind’s a-flight;
And yet my limbs seem made of lead.

If there are noises in the night,
    A frightening shadow, flickering light,
    Then I surrender unto sleep,
Where clouds of dream give second sight,

What dreams may come, both dark and deep,
Of flying wings and soaring leap
    As I surrender unto sleep,
    As I surrender unto sleep.

    TEXT by Frank Ticheli
    Sing, Be, Live, See.
    This dark stormy hour,
    The wind, it stirs.
The scorched earth cries out in vain:
    O war and power,
    You blind and blur,
The torn heart cries out in pain.

    But music and singing
    Have been my refuge,
    And music and singing
    Shall be my light.
    A light of song,
    Shining Strong:
    Alleluia!
    Through darkness, pain, and strife,
    I’ll Sing, Be, Live, See...
    Peace.

VOCES8 sings Jim Clements' arrangement of 'Send in the Clowns' by Stephen Sondheim. The video was filmed in the VOCES8 Centre in London.

    LYRICS
    Isn't it rich?
    Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground
    You in mid-air
    Send in the clowns

    Isn't it bliss?
    Don't you approve?
    One who keeps tearing around
    One who can't move
    But where are the clowns?
    Send in the clowns

    Just when I stopped
    Opening doors
    Finally knowing
The one that I wanted was yours
Making my entrance again with my usual flair

    Sure of my lines
    No one is there

    Don't you love farce?
    My fault, I fear
I thought that you'd want what I want-
    Sorry my dear
    But where are the clowns?
    Quick, send in the clowns
    Don't bother they're here

    ABOUT THE WORK:
Though originally written for Choral Arts Northwest, this work has taken on a new life in light of the atrocities in Paris and Beirut. Jonathan Talberg, the conductor of the choir at Cal State Long Beach, led his singers in a performance during the memorial vigil for Nohemi Gonzalez, a Long Beach student who was killed in the Paris attacks. The day after the vigil, the choir was supposed to begin rehearsing holiday music; however, Jonathan felt that was not appropriate and wanted time for the singers to grieve this loss. So, at the beginning of rehearsal, he passed out a brand new piece of music (Let My Love Be Heard), rehearsed it, and then recorded it. It was posted on SoundCloud and shared in memory of Nohemi and as a plea for peace. Their musical offering is a powerful outpouring of grief but also a glimmer of light. I am honored that this piece, “Let My Love Be Heard,” has helped to provide hope in the darkness of our world.

    TEXT:
    A Prayer (by Alfred Noyes)

    Angels, where you soar
    Up to God’s own light,
    Take my own lost bird
    On your hearts tonight;
    And as grief once more
    Mounts to heaven and sings,
    Let my love be heard
    Whispering in your wings.

  • VOCES8: Live in Cambridge 2019

    52:20

In praise of the European Day of Early Music and celebrating the commencement of our joint education project ‘Roots’, VOCES8 presents 'Sing Joyfully', a celebration of the joy and beauty of voices in harmony. Watch the event on Facebook Live, streamed on Tuesday 19 March at 7pm from the beautiful chapel in Trinity College, Cambridge.

“Joy and woe are woven fine” in a programme including Byrd, Tallis, Victoria, Britten and Dove, with Monteverdi’s dramatic rendering of La Sestina at its centre-point. The programme includes a short presentation by students from our project ‘Roots’.

Roots partners Cambridge Early Music, VCM Foundation/VOCES8, Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire Music, Anglia Ruskin University and The Brook Street Band are very grateful for the kind support of the Helen Hamlyn Trust and HERA - Humanities in the European Research Area.

    »Choral Night International - A Feast of Singing« ???? | Stiftsmusikfest Stuttgart 2019 ????

Rachmaninov's Bogoroditse Devo from his All-Night Vigil: It's a belter of a work in the Russian Orthodox choral style, full of drama and Rachmaninov's signature emotion and compositional inventiveness. The Bogoroditse Devo features one of the great climaxes in choral music, as the parts build to an ecstatic outpouring at yáko Spása rodilá yesí dush náshikh (for you have borne the Savior of our souls).
