  • VIVALDI – WINTER Organ of Basílica de Santa María, Elche, Spain - JONATHAN SCOTT

    10:01

    Jonathan Scott plays his organ arrangement of Winter (L'Inverno) from Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons on the organ of Basilica de Santa Maria, Elche Spain. The score of this arrangement is available here:

    The Organ was built by Gerhard Grenzing in 2006

    The accompanying words are from The Four Seasons sonnets:

    THE FOUR SEASONS SONNETS

    Concerto No. 4 in F minor, Op. 8 No. 4, RV 297, L’Inverno (“Winter”)

    1.
    To tremble from cold in the frozen snow,
    in the severe blowing of a horrid wind;
    To run, stamping one's feet all the time,
    our teeth chattering in the extreme cold;

    2.
    To pass peaceful contented days before the fire
    as the rain pours down outside.

    3.
    To walk on the ice slowly and cautiously,
    for fear of tripping and falling.
    Turn suddenly, slip, fall to the ground.
    Then run hard across the ice
    until it cracks and breaks up;
    We feel Sirocco, Boreas and all the winds course through
    the home despite the locked and bolted doors.
    This is winter, but nonetheless it brings its own delights!

  • THE COLD SONG OF VIVALDIS WINTER - XAVER VARNUS PLAYS ON ST. LADISLAUS CHURCH ORGAN IN BUDAPEST

    The Varnus Organ Hall needs your help. We are asking the community's support to restoring and operating Varnus Hall, Canada's only private organ concert venue owned by Xaver Varnus, to provide a worthy home for organists, famous artists and young talent alike, from around the world to perform, and broadcast their concerts online. We are grateful to you if you can help our work with any donations.

    Several famous music historians claim that Vivaldi used Purcell's Cold Song as an example in the first movement of his Winter-concerto. Surprisingly, most violinists and orchestras play this dramatic and mysterious march as a meaningless fast movement. But Vivaldi gave a clear instruction at the beginning of the manuscript: Allegro non molto - not fast. At a slower tempo, we get a brand new piece that brings out the beauty of the lost harmonies. Xaver Varnus

    Filmed by Mate Vargha on the 5th of March, 2019, in the Church of St. Ladislaus in Budapest- Kőbánya. Special thanks to Mayor Robert Antal D. Kovács, Town Clerk Dr. Krisztian Szabó, Rev. Attila Balog, Mr. András Benedek, Mr. Balázs Barnkopf and Mr. Balázs Békés.

    Born in Budapest, Xaver Varnus' first piano teacher was Emma Németh, one of the last pupils of Claude Debussy. Xaver Varnus has played virtually every important organ in the world, including those in Bach's Thomaskirche in Leipzig (2014), Berliner Dom (2013), Notre-Dame (1981), Saint-Sulpice (2006) and Saint-Eustache (1996) in Paris, National Shrine in Washington, D.C. (1985), and Canterbury Cathedral (2004), as well as the largest existing instrument in the world, the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia (1985). His Quadruple Platinum Disc winning album From Ravel to Vangelis, released by Sony BMG in 2007, is the best-selling organ CD ever. As a Canadian citizen, Xaver Varnus resides in Berlin, Germany. Put simply, Varnus is a monster talent, every bit as stimulating and individual as the late Glenn Gould (The Globe & Mail, Canada's National Newspaper).

    One of the most important open questions in the instrumental transcription of another’s music is this: do we want to copy the original orchestration ideas of a musical piece to another instrument or orchestra, or do we create an entirely new musical dimension? I have always felt that the latter solution presents the real challenge. When Bach transcribed the Vivaldi concertos to organ and harpsichord, he was aware that these works were not the original orchestral pieces. One problem is that if the organ is played as fast as a string orchestra, it sounds grotesque, since the huge organ pipes need time to produce their sounds. On the other hand, the monumentality of the organ is so gripping that a chamber or symphonic orchestra is not able to match its sounds. In the same way we do not hear the original Beethoven symphonies or the Chaconne of Bach when listening to this music transcribed to piano by Liszt and Busoni, or the orchestral transcriptions of Bach’s organ works by Stokowski and Schoenberg. When I visited the great Vladimir Horowitz in his NYC home on Madison Avenue, he started to play one of the choral preludes of Bach in Busoni’s transcription. There is no doubt that Horowitz’s piano playing was certainly very far from the performing style of the Bach-era. On the other hand, we do not know much about the performing style of Bach. However, tears came to my eyes, and I felt, that far away, beyond the clouds an angel was flying over us. The first pages of the transcription of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons were handed to me by the divine Jean Guillou in Toronto, back in 1986. Through thirty long years I kept asking him if he would finish the work. Every time he promised to do so. On the day he passed away I knew that it was my turn to finish the job in his spirit, not forgetting that the pipe organ was the first synthesizer in the history of music. So, I would like to dedicate my humble recording to his loving memory. I’m most grateful to Rev. Michelle Childs-Ward, Dr. Gábor Fésüs, Mrs. Márta Gáncs, Miss Ran Kim, Mr. Balázs Bärnkopf, Mr. Márton Berendi, Thomasorganist Ullrich Böhme, Mr. Adam Gungl, Mr. Andreas Hain, Mr. Balázs Kralovánszky, Mr. Bruce Walker, Mr. Zoltán Osváth, Rev. Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach

    Artists: Elena Barshai (organ)

    Like many of his colleagues J.S. Bach frequently borrowed from himself and paid tribute to other composers by transcribing their works for other instruments, For example his oeuvre for organ includes transcriptions of some instrumental concertos based on work of composers like Vivaldi.

    These release contains transcriptions of both Bach’s own concertos for solo keyboard and of instrumental concertos by Vivaldi. These works are certainly enhanced by the sonorities of the organ.

    Played by the Russian organist Elena Barshai on the Silbermann organ of Arlesheim Cathedral and the Metzler organ of the Church of St. Clara, Basle (both in Switzerland).

    Also included is an arrangement for two organs – both played by Barshai - of Bach’s Concerto for four harpsichords (which again is based on a concerto for four violins by Vivaldi).

  • XAVER VARNUS PLAYS BACHS TOCCATA & FUGUE IN THE BERLINER DOM

    12:11

    The Varnus Organ Hall needs your help. We are asking the community's support to restoring and operating Varnus Hall, Canada's only private organ concert venue owned by Xaver Varnus, to provide a worthy home for organists, famous artists and young talent alike, from around the world to perform, and broadcast their concerts online. We are grateful to you if you can help our work with any donations.

    Xaver Varnus plays Toccata and Fugue in D minor (edited by Mendelssohn) on the great Sauer Organ of the Berliner Dom. Recorded live on the Opening Night of the Berliner Internationaler Orgelsommer 2013.

    At the time of its dedication in 1905, the great Sauer Organ of the Berliner Dom was the largest in Germany, with its 7269 pipes and 113 registers, distributed across four manuals and pedals. The court organ builder Wilhelm Sauer, from Frankfurt on the Oder, created an instrument that embodied the newest technical and musical developments of German organ building at the time. In that way, the organ met the high expectations of both the organ builder and his client: in the Protestant Cathedral of the capital city, there was to be a monumental, modern, and in every way extraordinary instrument of the highest quality. The organ of the Cathedral of Berlin represents the highpoint of Sauer’s career. At the same time, it marks the end of the long development of Romantic orchestral organs, whose sound corresponds to the characteristic sound of a symphonic orchestra of that period. Today, the organ in the Cathedral of Berlin is the largest late-Romantic pneumatic action organ in the world that has survived in its original condition.

    •●The Official Video Site of Concert Organist Xaver Varnus●•

    Born in Budapest, his first piano teacher was Emma Németh, one of the last pupils of Claude Debussy.

  • VIVALDI - SPRING - THE FOUR SEASONS - Arranged for Organ by Jonathan Scott

    10:30

    Jonathan Scott plays his organ arrangement of Spring from Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons on the newly restored organ of St Paul's Church, Royton. The score of this transcription is available here:

    The Organ was built by Harrison & Harrison Ltd (1956) and was restored by Willis & Sons Ltd (2016).

    The accompanying words are from The Four Seasons sonnets:

    THE FOUR SEASONS SONNETS

    SPRING

    1.
    Spring has arrived
    and the birds celebrate with festive song.
    Meanwhile gentle murmuring streams are softly
    caressed by the breezes:
    Lightning and thunder, those heralds of spring,
    arrive to cover the air with a black cloak;
    Then they die away to silence,
    and the birds take up their charming songs again.

    2.
    On the flower strewn meadow,
    with the murmur of leaves and plants,
    the goatherd sleeps with his faithful dog beside him.

    3.
    Led by the festive sound of rustic bagpipes,
    nymphs and shepherds dance
    beneath the brilliant appearance of spring.

    “The Organ Season” (2017) is a four-movement suite that takes its inspiration from the seasons of the year. “Spring” is a brief and bright fanfare. “Summer” is a festive dance. “Autumn” is a cool, nostalgic waltz. “Winter” in an “imposing” ricercare-fughetta.

    Grimoaldo Macchia (b. 1972) was born in Rome and began his musical studies there at the Arts Academy. He later graduated with honors in piano and composition from the Conservatory of Perugia, where he studied composition primarily with Stefano Bracci. L'inverno (Winter)

    Allegro non molto
    To tremble from cold in the icy snow,
    In the harsh breath of a horrid wind;
    To run, stamping one's feet every moment,
    Our teeth chattering in the extreme cold

    Largo
    Before the fire to pass peaceful,
    Contented days while the rain outside pours down.

    Allegro
    We tread the icy path slowly and cautiously,
    for fear of tripping and falling.
    Then turn abruptly, slip, crash on the ground and rising,
    hasten on across the ice lest it cracks up.
    We feel the chill north winds course through the home
    despite the locked and bolted doors...
    this is winter, which nonetheless
    brings its own delights.

    Xaver Varnus plays Vivaldi's Spring on the great Aquincum Organ of the Debrecen Presbyterian Cathedral. Filmed in concert on October 6, 2019. Directed by Mate Vargha.

    The specification of the organ:

    Born in Budapest, his first piano teacher was Emma Németh, one of the last pupils of Claude Debussy.
