Like a shot without a warning
Lies a life that’s left behind
    And though I try
    It’s something I
Just can’t unsee, it’s burned into my mind

And I wake up in the morning
News keeps flashing on my eyes
These dying streets are bruised and beaten
    And riot flags are waving
Poor and weak, we extend this streak
These lives we could be saving
Life is cheap I sit and weep cause there’s just no mistaking
    This is not utopia

    The roots of America
    Are the roots of hysteria
    The rules don’t matter anymore
    This is not utopia

    The roots of America
    Are the roots of hysteria
    And you don’t matter anymore

The better angels of our nature
Well they’ve gone away to hide
    Brutality
    I can’t unsee
These pictures are just burned into my mind

    It’s commotion in slow motion
    It’s humanity denied
    A violent race
    Punch in the face
With all this hate how can we all survive?

And if a change is coming
What makes it take so long?
And if a change is coming
Why sing the same old song?
    This is not utopia

    The roots of America
    Are the roots of hysteria
    The rules don’t matter anymore
    This is not utopia

    The roots of America
    Are the roots of hysteria
    And you don’t matter anymore
    This is not utopia

    The roots of America
    Are the roots of hysteria
    And you don’t matter anymore

So now how long must we wait?
    Until love conquers hate?
    And heal these hearts
    Cause it all starts
    Right here

  • Utopia – Jacob de Haan

    12:02

De Haske Inspiration Series Grade 4 – Duration: 11:25

Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself, after the Greek language, meaning Nowhereland and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However, Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brass section remind of Wagner's music.

    4:59

‘Once In A Lifetime’ from David Byrne’s (Talking Heads) “American Utopia” on Broadway 05OCT19

    “And you may find yourself
    Living in a shotgun shack
    And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
    And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
    With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
    How did I get here?

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

    And you may ask yourself
    How do I work this?
    And you may ask yourself
    Where is that large automobile?
    And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
    And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was

    Water dissolving and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!
    Water dissolving and water removing

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again into silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

    You may ask yourself
    What is that beautiful house?
    You may ask yourself
Where does that highway go to?
    And you may ask yourself
Am I right? Am I wrong?
    And you may say yourself
My God! What have I done?

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again into the silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was

    Look where my hand was
    Time isn't holding us
    Time isn't after us

    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was
    Same as it ever was

    Letting the days go by

    Same as it ever was

    And here the twister comes
    Here comes the twister

Letting the days go by (same as it ever was)
Same as it ever was (same as it ever was)
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was)

    Same as it ever was

    Once in a lifetime
Let the water hold me down
    Letting the days go by”

    Lyrics:
    A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that music used to
    make me smile
And I knew that if I had my chance
I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while

Did you write the book of love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so
Now do you believe in Rock 'n' roll
And can music save your mortal soul
And can you teach me how to dance real slow

Well, I know that you're in love with him
'Cos I saw you dancin' in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues

I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pick-up truck
But I knew that I was out of luck
    The day the music died
    I started singing

    Bye, bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee
    But the levee was dry
And good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play

Well now, in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
Tho church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire the most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
    The day the music died

    We started singin'

    Bye, bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee
    But the levee was dry
And good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

    Bye, bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee
    But the levee was dry
And good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

    We started singin'
    We started singin'
    We started singin'
    We started singin'

Utopia is an American rock band formed in 1973 by Todd Rundgren. During its first three years, the group was a progressive rock band with a somewhat fluid membership known as Todd Rundgren's Utopia. Most of the members in this early incarnation also played on Rundgren's solo albums of the period up to 1975. By 1976, the group was known simply as Utopia and was a stable quartet of Todd Rundgren, Kasim Sulton, Roger Powell and John Willie Wilcox. This version of the group gradually abandoned prog-rock for straightforward rock and pop.
Utopia is the second of two self-titled albums by the rock group Utopia (the other being Todd Rundgren's Utopia). It was released in 1982 (see 1982 in music). It was also their only album for Network Records.

I found this video looking up the England Dan & John Ford Coley version of this song. Embarrassed to say that I didn't know it was originally a Utopia song! There are so many things to love here: the band uniforms, their instruments, the 1970's looking stage backdrop, and the late Mike Douglas. Hope you enjoy.

Made from a live video. Links to the original band video:

Utopia is an American rock band formed in 1973 by Todd Rundgren. During its first three years, the group was a progressive rock band with a somewhat fluid membership known as Todd Rundgren's Utopia. Most of the members in this early incarnation also played on Rundgren's solo albums of the period up to 1975. By 1976, the group was known simply as Utopia and was a stable quartet of Todd Rundgren, Kasim Sulton, Roger Powell and John Willie Wilcox. This version of the group gradually abandoned prog-rock for straightforward rock and pop.

  • Utopia - Set Me Free

    3:07

Utopia is an U.S. American rock band formed by legendary Todd Rundgren. This video is from their live at The Metro, Boston, MA on November 4th, 1982. Band members: Todd Rundgren, Roger Powell, Kasim Sulton and John Wilcox. Set Me Free was the biggest hit for Utopia (from their 1979 LP Adventures in Utopia), number 27 in Billboard Hot 100.

Many of their songs originated with Rundgren, but Set Me Free came from their bass player, Kasim Sulton. The song sounds like it's about an interpersonal relationship, with the guy asking the girl to cut him loose so he can move on with his life, but it's really about Sulton's professional life. All four members of Utopia were signed to Bearsville Records not just as a band, but individually as well. Sulton desperately wanted to do a solo album, but was rebuffed by Bearsville, so he wrote this song about wanting to be released from his contract. In our interview with Sulton, he explained: Albert Grossman actually said to me, 'That's fine. You're more than welcome to go. That'll be $50,000 and 15 percent of all the royalties that you'll ever make for the rest of your life.' And I freaked out and I wrote Set Me Free.'
