  • USA State Song: Alabama - Alabama

    1:24

The song “Alabama” is the official state song for the State of Alabama. It was first written as a poem by Julia Tutwiler, a distinguished educator and humanitarian. It was first sung to an Austrian air, but in 1931, the music written by Mrs. Edna Gockel Gussen, an organist and choirmaster from Birmingham, Alabama, was adopted by the State Federation of Music Clubs and through their efforts, House Joint Resolution 74 was adopted March 9, 1931. Act no. 126, adopted the music and words as the state song of Alabama. The bill was introduced by the Hon. Tyler Goodwyn, Montgomery, and was signed into law by Governor B.M. Miller.

The inspiration for writing the poem Alabama came to Julia Tutwiler after she returned to her native state from Germany, where she had been studying new educational methods for girls and women. She recalled that in Germany patriotism was inspired by spirited songs. She thought that it would be helpful toward restoring the spirits of her own people to give them a new patriotic song, inspiring her to write Alabama.

    Lyrics:

Almost heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River.
Life is old there, older than the trees, younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze.
Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.
West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads.

All my memories gather round her, miner's lady, stranger to blue water.
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye.
Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.
West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads.

However, then-governor Booth Gardner proclaimed one day in that timeframe to be the state's official Louie, Louie Day.

  • USA State Song: Maryland - Maryland, My Maryland

    1:46

Maryland, My Maryland is the official state song of the U.S. state of Maryland. The song is set to the tune of Lauriger Horatius — better known as the tune of O Tannenbaum. The lyrics are from a nine-stanza poem written by James Ryder Randall (1839–1908) in 1861. The state's general assembly adopted Maryland, My Maryland as the state song on April 29, 1939.

The song's words refer to Maryland's history and geography and specifically mentions several historical figures of importance to the state. The song calls for Maryland to fight the Union and was used across the South during the Civil War as a battle hymn. It has been called America's most martial poem.

Due to its origin in support of the Confederacy, it includes lyrics that refer to President Abraham Lincoln as a tyrant, despot, and Vandal, and to the Union as Northern scum, as well as referring to the phrase sic semper, which was the slogan later shouted by Marylander John Wilkes Booth while assassinating Lincoln. For these reasons occasional attempts have been made to replace it as Maryland's state song, but to date all such attempts have met with failure.

  • USA State Song: Texas - Texas, Our Texas

    1:26

Texas, Our Texas is the official state song of Texas. It was written in 1924 by William J. Marsh, who was born in Liverpool, England, and emigrated to Texas as a young man, and Gladys Yoakum Wright, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, and selected as the state song by a concurrent resolution of the Texas Legislature in 1929 following a statewide competition. Older songs, such as The Yellow Rose of Texas and Dixie, were also considered but ultimately it was decided a new song should be composed. At times, there have been movements to replace Texas, Our Texas with the better known The Eyes of Texas.

The first word of the third line was originally largest, but when Alaska became the largest state when it was admitted to the United States in 1959, the word was replaced with boldest.

This song was sung in group by elementary students in Texas at the beginning of their school classes during the 50s. At that time largest started the third line of the first verse. As of the 1980s, this song was still sung before classes in some schools, along with the pledge to the American and Texas flags, but with boldest instead of largest.

  • USA State Song: Minnesota - Hail! Minnesota

    1:48

Hail! Minnesota (also simply called Minnesota in early years) is the state song of Minnesota, and a variation is used as a school song of the University of Minnesota. It originated at the university in the early 20th century when some students decided to honor their graduating class with a new song. In 1945, the Minnesota State Legislature approved the tune as the state song. The song was first composed by Truman Rickard in 1904 and was performed on May 28, Class Day. The song's second verse originally honored the school's president, Cyrus Northrop, who went by the nickname Prexy. Northrop appreciated the gesture, but preferred to have the song reflect the school and state rather than himself. A new second verse was written by Arthur Upson, an editor at the campus newspaper, the Minnesota Daily.

In the next few years, the song gained popularity, and was even sung at football games whenever there was a touchdown. However, the slow ballad proved to be incongruous with the atmosphere at an athletic event like that, so it was eventually succeeded in that role by The Minnesota Rouser. Rickard also went on to write another school song, Minnesota Fight.

The University of Minnesota Marching Band sings the song at the end of every practice and performance, so Golden Gopher football fans who stay for the band's post-game performance can hear the song.

Older generations of Minnesota children were taught the song in school, but this practice has waned. However, the song was promoted again as part of the state sesquicentennial celebration in 2008, with the Mahtomedi High School Chamber Singers making an official recording of it in 2006 for the Secretary of State.

Carry Me Back to Old Virginny is a song which was written by James A. Bland (1854–1911), an African American who wrote over 700 songs. It is not an adaption by Bland of the Carry Me Back to Old Virginia by the Christy Minstrels, also known by the title; Floating Scow of Old Virginny, a song copyrighted by Edwin Pearce Christy in 1847. Bland simply appropriated the song title. Bland's song bears no rememblace to it melodically, harmonically, or in the lyrics (except that both songs are minstrel songs). This latter song was very popular during the California gold rush and the American Civil War. Many parodies were written on this melody, and popular with both miners, and Civil War soldiers and civilians. Bland's version, the best known, was written in 1878 when many newly-freed slaves were struggling to find work. The song has become controversial in modern times, with critics viewing the lyrics as racially insensitive.

A third reworded version was Virginia's state song from 1940 until 1997, using the word Virginia instead of Virginny. In 1997, it was retired as state song, largely due to controversy over the lyrics' racial content. On January 28, 1997, the Virginia Senate voted to designate Carry Me Back to Old Virginia as state song emeritus and a study committee initiated a contest for writing a new state song.

In January 2006, a state Senate panel voted to designate Shenandoah as the interim official state song. On March 1, 2006, the House Rules Committee of the General Assembly voted down bill SB682, which would have made Shenandoah the official state song.

Carry me back to old Virginny.
There's where the cotton and corn and taters grow.
There's where the birds warble sweet in the spring-time.
There's where this old darkey's heart am long'd to go.

There's where I labored so hard for old Massa,
    Day after day in the field of yellow corn;
No place on earth do I love more sincerely
Than old Virginny, the state where I was born.

Carry me back to old Virginny,
There let me live till I wither and decay.
Long by the old Dismal Swamp have I wandered,
There's where this old darkey's life will pass away.

Massa and Missis have long since gone before me,
Soon we will meet on that bright and golden shore.
There we'll be happy and free from all sorrow,
There's where we'll meet and we'll never part no more.

“Our Great Virginia” would not exist at all without Prof. James (“Bud”) Robertson who inspired it … his amazing wife, Elizabeth (“Betty”) Robertsonwho has championed it … Composer, Jim Papoulis who graciously arranged it … and Choral Conductor, Music Educator and Clinician, Sophia Miller who has helped in numerous ways.

It is written to the melody of a traditional folk song, dating back to at least the early 1800’s.

  • Alabama State Song

    1:44

“Alabama” - official state song for the State of Alabama
    ---
Song was first written as a poem by Julia Tutwiler, a distinguished educator and humanitarian.

Montana is the state song of the U.S. state of Montana. It was written by Charles Cohan and composed by Joseph E. Howard and was adopted as the state song on February 20, 1945.

Tell me of that Treasure State
    Story always new,
    Tell of its beauties grand
    And its hearts so true.
    Mountains of sunset fire
The land I love the best
Let me grasp the hand of one
    From out the golden West
Montana, Montana, Glory of the West
Of all the states from coast to coast, You're easily the best
Montana, Montana, Where skies are always blue
    M-O-N-T-A-N-A
    Montana I love you!
    Each country has its flow'r;
    Each one plays a part,
Each bloom brings a longing hope
    To some lonely heart.
    Bitterroot to me is dear
    Growing in my land
    Sing then that glorious air
    The one I understand.
Montana, Montana, Glory of the West
Of all the states from coast to coast, You're easily the best
Montana, Montana, Where skies are always blue
    Montana, Montana I love you!

Original ballad celebrating the Commonwealth of Virginia. Music and lyrics by Carol Boyd Leon (ASCAP). Presented to the VA legislature January 2007 by Del. Dave Marsden. Sheet music and downloadable mp3 available at

Virginia, where the rolling mountains capture the eye,
Virginia, where the songbirds serenade the clear blue sky.
Virginia, where the crystal streams cross valleys so wide,
Deep within my heart is where you'll always reside.

Democracy's cradle, we hold you to be,
America's birthplace, the home of liberty.
Provenance of Presidents throughout our history.
Your sons and daughters show the world
    That people must live free.

The colors of the Shenandoah stay always in my mind,
The salty air of Chesapeake I'll never leave behind,
The pioneering spirit of the Blue Ridge you will find
Within the soul of this Virginian ever enshrined.

  • Chris Aable - Virginia State Song

    3:14

Chris Aable grew up around big names in music. His father was a friend of Elvis Presley, born the same year & tiny town where both would sneak into State Fairs together. Chris's mother was a good friend of Johnny Horton's wife, who shared a wedding dress, now on Museum display. Chris's great uncle, Claude King, was a regular on the first musical TV Show, the Louisiana Hayride in the 50s and won two Grammy Awards in the 60s for songs in the Top 10.

Chris began writing songs on piano at age nine for his famous uncle and others. At age ten, Chris joined his school orchestra playing viola and violin. While in his teens he taught himself to play Saxophone and harp. He also played keyboards in a band called Pan (after the mythical god of music) playing for audiences as large as 50,000. His songs were later published by Heartwind Publications as a book of poetry entitled “Life Songs”, which made Chris the youngest poet listed in “Who's Who of North American Poets”.

Before going to college, Chris moved to L.A., produced a TV Pilot Americas Craziest Home Videos (Before America's Funniest Home Videos) and hosted his own TV Show Hollywood Today interviewing over 100 celebrities. He was in numerous commercials including a regular skit on The Movie Channel. He temporarily left acting and music in the 90s to attend college, earning degrees in Human Services, and a double major for his Master's in Psychology & Sociology. He was the first Graduate Professor to teach both Psychology and Sociology at CSULA.

Today, Chris Aable's focus is back on song writing a message of Self-Evolution-Peace, love and unity. Each of his over 100 songs demonstrate Chris' talent for unique lyrics, superior orchestration and highly diverse instrumentation. He is a long-time member of the Screen Actors Guild and American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.

  • OH BEAUTIFUL VIRGINIA

    3:47

    Published on Mar 26, 2013

In 2013, an 84-year-old poet named Alice Powell asked me to set her lyrics for Oh Beautiful Virginia to music and do the vocal. Her goal was to submit our work to the state song competition of Virginia. On February 14, the song was played personally for her state delegate and also for the state senator who heads the song competition committee. Their response was positive but there are literally hundreds of entries. The statistical odds may not in our favor, but we hope people will enjoy our loving tribute to the beautiful state of Virginia.

  • New Jersey state song

    1:29

Official anthem New Jersey State USA.New Jersey is a state in the Northeastern and Middle Atlantic regions of the United States. New Jersey does not have an official state song, while Virginia's previous state song, Carry Me Back to Old Virginny, adopted in 1940, was rescinded due to its racist language by the Virginia General Assembly. In 2015, Our Great Virginia was made the new state song of Virginia.New Jersey was one of the Thirteen Colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution. The New Jersey Constitution of 1776 was passed July 2, 1776, just two days before the Second Continental Congress declared American Independence from Great Britain. It was an act of the Provincial Congress, which made itself into the state Legislature. To reassure neutrals, it provided that it would become void if New Jersey reached reconciliation with Great Britain.
New Jersey representatives Richard Stockton, John Witherspoon, Francis Hopkinson, John Hart, and Abraham Clark were among those who signed the United States Declaration of Independence.
The National Hockey League's New Jersey Devils, based in Newark at the Prudential Center, is the only major league franchise to bear the state's name. The Metropolitan Area's two National Football League teams, the New York Giants and the New York Jets, both play in East Rutherford, Bergen County, at MetLife Stadium.

In the valleys filled with splendor,
On the rivers to the bay,
    The cradle of America,
    Shines with each new day.
And the sun falls o'er the Blue Ridge,
Like a vision found in dreams.
At night, the stars all gather there,
    Or so it seems.

    CHORUS
Oh, Virginia, thats where I long to be.
    Amid the endless beauty,
    In a land of majesty.
Oh, Virginia, a wonder to behold.
Virginia is for lovers, young and old.

From those hallowed fields of freedom,
    Where so many bravely died,
    The valiant cry for Liberty,
    Could not be denied.
    As your Nation lay divided,
Through a long and lonely war,
    A solemn vow was echoing--
    Nevermore!

    CHORUS
