  • USA State Song: Washington - Washington, My Home

    2:45

    Washington, My Home is the state song of Washington, in the United States. Written by Helen Davis and arranged by Stuart Churchill, it was adopted on March 19, 1959.

    There is a popular myth in Washington state that the state song is actually Louie, Louie by the Fabulous Wailers. There was indeed a failed effort to change the state song to Louie, Louie in the 1980s, spearheaded by KING-TV comedy-show Almost Live! host Ross Shafer. However, then-governor Booth Gardner proclaimed one day in that timeframe to be the state's official Louie, Louie Day.

  • USA State Song: Pennsylvania - Pennsylvania

    1:59

    Pennsylvania is the official state song of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The song was written and composed by Eddie Khoury and Ronnie Bonner and serves as the official song for all public purposes. State Representative Frank L. Oliver introduced the bill for the song, and it was adopted by the General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Robert P. Casey on November 29, 1990.

  • USA State Song: Minnesota - Hail! Minnesota

    1:48

    Hail! Minnesota (also simply called Minnesota in early years) is the state song of Minnesota, and a variation is used as a school song of the University of Minnesota. It originated at the university in the early 20th century when some students decided to honor their graduating class with a new song. In 1945, the Minnesota State Legislature approved the tune as the state song.The song was first composed by Truman Rickard in 1904 and was performed on May 28, Class Day. The song's second verse originally honored the school's president, Cyrus Northrop, who went by the nickname Prexy. Northrop appreciated the gesture, but preferred to have the song reflect the school and state rather than himself. A new second verse was written by Arthur Upson, an editor at the campus newspaper, the Minnesota Daily.

    In the next few years, the song gained popularity, and was even sung at football games whenever there was a touchdown. However, the slow ballad proved to be incongruous with the atmosphere at an athletic event like that, so it was eventually succeeded in that role by The Minnesota Rouser. Rickard also went on to write another school song, Minnesota Fight.

    The University of Minnesota Marching Band sings the song at the end of every practice and performance, so Golden Gopher football fans who stay for the band's post-game performance can hear the song.

    Older generations of Minnesota children were taught the song in school, but this practice has waned. However, the song was promoted again as part of the state sesquicentennial celebration in 2008, with the Mahtomedi High School Chamber Singers making an official recording of it in 2006 for the Secretary of State.

  • USA State Song: Maryland - Maryland, My Maryland

    1:46

    Maryland, My Maryland is the official state song of the U.S. state of Maryland. The song is set to the tune of Lauriger Horatius — better known as the tune of O Tannenbaum. The lyrics are from a nine-stanza poem written by James Ryder Randall (1839–1908) in 1861. The state's general assembly adopted Maryland, My Maryland as the state song on April 29, 1939.

    The song's words refer to Maryland's history and geography and specifically mentions several historical figures of importance to the state. The song calls for Maryland to fight the Union and was used across the South during the Civil War as a battle hymn. It has been called America's most martial poem.

    Due to its origin in support of the Confederacy, it includes lyrics that refer to President Abraham Lincoln as a tyrant, despot, and Vandal, and to the Union as Northern scum, as well as referring to the phrase sic semper, which was the slogan later shouted by Marylander John Wilkes Booth while assassinating Lincoln. For these reasons occasional attempts have been made to replace it as Maryland's state song,but to date all such attempts have met with failure.

  • USA State Song : Hawaii - Hawai’i Pono’i

    1:52

    Lot, Kamehameha V, wanted a gift of music for his people and asked Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany to send a bandmaster to Hawaiʻi. Henri Berger arrived June 5, 1872, and organized the Royal Hawaiian band who perfomed June 11,1872, after 5 days of practice. This first performance of the Royal Hawaiian band introduced Hymn to Kamehameha I which Berger re-wrote for the first celebration of King Kamehameha Day. The melody was based on the Prussian hymn originally titled Heil Dir Im Siegerkranz. The words by King David Kalākaua was set to the Hymn to Kamehameha I in 1874, and was first sung by the Kawaiahaʻo Church Choir, on King Kalākaua`s birthday, Nov. 16, 1874. The King made a state visit to Japan on March 4, 1881, and was received lavishly by Emperor Mutsuhito. Landing at the Bay of Yeddo, Yokohama, he was greeted by a Japanese military band playing his song. During the visit, Kalākaua proposed the marriage of his niece, 5-year-old Princess Kaʻiulani to Prince Yamashina Komatsu Sadamoro, the 15-year-old nephew of the emperor. The emperor replied that the prince was already betrothed. Upon Kalākaua's return to Hawaiʻi, he received formal letters from Foreign Minister Inouye Kaoru and Prince Komatsu politely declining the offer of marriage to the Hawaiian princess. Thirteen years later, Jan. 29, 1894, Queen Liliʻuokalani wrote to Princess Kaʻiulani asking the princess to marry and choose a suitable mate from Prince David Kawananakoa, Prince Jonah Kūhiō or Prince Komatsu, the Japanese Prince. In a letter to the Queen, June 22, 1894, Princess Kaʻiulani rejected all three princes writing I feel it would be wrong if I married a man I did not love. I should be perfectly unhappy, and we should not agree and instead of being an example to the married women of today, I should become like them, merely a woman of fashion and most likely to flirt. The Hawaiʻi legislature proclaimed Hawaiʻi Ponoʻi the state anthem in 1967.

    3:06

    The state song of the U.S. state of California with lyrics in English (EN)
    ----------

    - English Lyrics:
    I love you, California, you're the greatest state of all.
    I love you in the winter, summer, spring and in the fall.
    I love your fertile valleys; your dear mountains I adore.
    I love your grand old ocean and I love her rugged shore.

    Chorus
    When the snow crowned Golden Sierras
    Keep their watch o'er the valleys bloom,
    It is there I would be in our land by the sea,
    Every breeze bearing rich perfume.
    It is here nature gives of her rarest. It is Home Sweet Home to me,
    And I know when I die I shall breathe my last sigh
    For my sunny California.

    II.
    I love your red-wood forests – love your fields of yellow grain.
    I love your summer breezes and I love your winter rain.
    I love you, land of flowers; land of honey, fruit and wine.
    I love you, California; you have won this heart of mine.

    Chorus

    5:19

    The United States Army Field Band performs the famous Civil War-era piece, The Battle Hymn of the Republic.

    Lyrics: Julia Ward Howe
    Music: William Steffe
    Setting: Peter J. Wilhousky
    Arrangement: James Neilson
    Conductor: 1st Lt. Alexandra Borza

    Lyrics
    Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
    He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
    He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
    His truth is marching on.

    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    His truth is marching on.

    I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps;
    They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
    I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps,
    His day is marching on.

    In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
    With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me;
    As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free!
    While God is marching on.

    ABOUT JEOGRAPHY:
    My name is Stephen, creator of Jeography Songs. After discovering my love for travel over 10 years ago, I decided to embark upon a musical journey where upon reaching my destination I'd have successfully written a song for every one of the 196 countries on planet Earth.

    Now well into my journey, I recently decided to create video portraits of the countries using my songs as the theme and am in the process of putting them up for the world to enjoy here on Youtube. I hope you find these musical portraits a truly enjoyable way to learn about the diverse cultures, geographies, and histories that make each country remarkable.

    In writing each song I tried to use instrumentation, melodies, and rhythms that reflect the musical traditions of the host country. We sincerely hope you enjoy this method of geographic learning. Any inquiries or questions can be sent to letsrockgeography@gmail.com.

    3:07

    Rhode Island’s It For Me is the official state song of Rhode Island. The lyrics are by Charlie Hall, and the music was written by Maria Day. Hall, a comedian, was known for poking fun at Rhode Island in the songs composed for the comedy troupes of Charlie Hall's Ocean State Follies. Asked at some point after 1992 if he could write something good about the state, Hall penned Rhode Island’s It For Me. It was adopted as the state song in 1996, replacing Rhode Island, by T. Clarke Browne, which became the official state march.

    Oregon, My Oregon is the state song of the U.S. state of Oregon. Written for a song contest in 1920, the 16-line, 2-verse song became the state's official song in 1927.

    In 1920, the Society of Oregon Composers held a competition to select a state song for Oregon.[1][2] The winning entry, Oregon, My Oregon, was a collaboration between John Andrew Buchanan, who wrote the lyrics, and Henry Bernard Murtagh, who composed the music.[2] Buchanan was an amateur lyricist who was an Astoria city judge,[2] while Murtagh was a professional musician with a Broadway credit,[3] but who was best known as a professionally trained theatre organist on the West Coast during the silent movie era.[2][4][5][6][7]

    Following the song's selection, the Society promoted the song by conducting performances at public gathering spaces around the state and at schools and universities (the state Superintendent of Public Instruction had endorsed the song).[2]

    On February 12, 1927, the song was officially adopted as the state song by a joint resolution of the Oregon State Legislature.[8]

    The song's lyrics were adapted and used in the song the Afterlife by the Oregon band YACHT on their album See Mystery Lights.[9]

    Buchanan's lyrics contain two main themes: honoring the early settlers and pioneers of Oregon, and praise for the natural beauty of the state. Murtagh composed the song as a march in F major. Unlike two other similarly named state songs—Maryland, My Maryland and Michigan, My Michigan—Oregon, My Oregon is not set to the tune of O Tannenbaum.

  • USA State Song: Texas - Texas, Our Texas

    1:26

    Texas, Our Texas is the official state song of Texas. It was written in 1924 by William J. Marsh, who was born in Liverpool, England, and emigrated to Texas as a young man, and Gladys Yoakum Wright, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, and selected as the state song by a concurrent resolution of the Texas Legislature in 1929 following a statewide competition. Older songs, such as The Yellow Rose of Texas and Dixie, were also considered but ultimately it was decided a new song should be composed. At times, there have been movements to replace Texas, Our Texas with the better known The Eyes of Texas.

    The first word of the third line was originally largest, but when Alaska became the largest state when it was admitted to the United States in 1959, the word was replaced with boldest.

    This song was sung in group by elementary students in Texas at the beginning of their school classes during the 50s. At that time largest started the third line of the first verse. As of the 1980s, this song was still sung before classes in some schools, along with the pledge to the American and Texas flags, but with boldest instead of largest.

  • USA State Song: Alabama - Alabama

    1:24

    The song “Alabama” is the official state song for the State of Alabama. It was first written as a poem by Julia Tutwiler, a distinguished educator and humanitarian. It was first sung to an Austrian air, but in 1931, the music written by Mrs. Edna Gockel Gussen, an organist and choirmaster from Birmingham, Alabama, was adopted by the State Federation of Music Clubs and through their efforts, House Joint Resolution 74 was adopted March 9, 1931. Act no. 126, adopted the music and words as the state song of Alabama. The bill was introduced by the Hon. Tyler Goodwyn, Montgomery, and was signed into law by Governor B.M. Miller.

    The inspiration for writing the poem Alabama came to Julia Tutwiler after she returned to her native state from Germany, where she had been studying new educational methods for girls and women. She recalled that in Germany patriotism was inspired by spirited songs. She thought that it would be helpful toward restoring the spirits of her own people to give them a new patriotic song, inspiring her to write Alabama.

    Where the crimson sun seeks rest,
    There's a growing splendid state that lies above,
    On the breast of this great land;
    Where the massive Rockies stand,
    There's Wyoming young and strong, the State I love!
    In the flowers wild and sweet,
    Colors rare and perfumes meet;
    There's the columbine so pure, the daisy too,
    Wild the rose and red it springs,
    White the button and its rings,
    Thou art loyal for they're red and white and blue.
    Wyoming, Wyoming! Land of the sunlight clear!
    Wyoming, Wyoming! Land that we hold so dear!
    Wyoming, Wyoming! Precious art thou and thine!

  • Texas state song

    1:17

    Texas, Our Texas is the state song of Texas. At times, there have been movements to replace Texas, Our Texas with the better known The Eyes of Texas.This song was sung in group by elementary students in Texas at the beginning of their school classes during the 50s. At that time largest started the third line of the first verse. As of the 1980s, this song was still sung before classes in some schools, along with the pledge to the American and Texas flags, but with boldest instead of largest.

    Texas, Our Texas! All hail the mighty State!
    Texas, Our Texas! So wonderful so great!
    boldest and grandest, withstanding ev'ry test

    (chorus)
    Texas, O Texas! your freeborn single star,
    Sends out its radiance to nations near and far,
    Emblem of Freedom! it set our hearts aglow,
    With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo.
    (chorus)
    Texas, dear Texas! from tyrant grip now free,
    Shines forth in splendor, your star of destiny!
    Mother of heroes, we come your children true,
    Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.
    Chorus:
    God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
    That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.
