  • True Steppers feat Dane Bowers Buggin

    2:07

Enter the month of Aquarius, the year 2000 and True Steppers were just about to become one of the most talked about dance bands of the year. Joining together with ex Another Level member Dane Bowers, they co-wrote the track 'Buggin'.

With the backing and support of the Ice Cream machine, as the summer of Y2K dawned, the track fast became a hit, reaching no.6 in the National charts; it was THE summer anthem.

  • True Steppers & Dane Bowers Feat Victoria Beckham Out Of Your Mind

    2:27

This track was first released in 2000. After their release of Buggin feat Dane Bowers True Steppers were just about to move up a gear, as journalistic spin ensued, they made front page news. Victoria Beckham was on the trail of The Steppers, and looking for that garage sound. Step in Posh and hold on tight, True Steppers 'Out Of Your Mind' feat Dane Bowers and Victoria Beckham was the biggest hyped record of 2000, going head to head for the number 1 spot with one of the biggest dance tracks in the last decade, Spiller feat Sophie Ellis Bextor.

True Steppers sold over 50,000 records in the first day of release (unheard of these days) and kept the number 1 slot on mid-week sales until the very last day, ending up at no 2, selling just fewer than 200,000 records, in the first week alone.

    IMAGINE
Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try
No hell below us, above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today...

Imagine there's no countries, it isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace...

Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger - a brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us and the world will live as one

written by John Lennon & Yoko Ono

    ABOUT IMAGINE
John: ‘Imagine’ is a song conceived in my head without melody. The first verse came to me very quickly in the form of a childlike street chant ‘da da da da da dee dee da dee da ee a eeeh’. The piano intro I’ve had hanging around in my head for a few years – the chords and melody followed naturally from this.

The middle eight was ‘conceived’ to finish off the song. I think it works as a song. Of course, there is always room for improvement – otherwise I wouldn’t make any more. The third verse came to me in an eight-seater plane. It’s a song for children.

Yoko: ‘Cloud Piece’: ‘Imagine the clouds dripping, dig a hole in your garden to put them in.’ This is not a piece of poetry. Poetry to me is nouns or adjectives. This is verbs. And you have to do them. These are all instructions and when you just do it, then you start to understand it.

John: ‘Imagine’ was inspired by Yoko’s Grapefruit. There’s a lot of pieces in it saying like ‘Imagine this’ or ‘Imagine that’. If you get a copy of Grapefruit and look through, you’ll see where I was influenced by her. ‘Imagine’ could never have been written without her. And I know she helped on a lot of the lyrics but I wasn’t man enough to let her have credit for it. So that song was actually written by John & Yoko, but I was still selfish enough and unaware enough to take her contribution without acknowledging it. The song itself expresses what I’d learned through being with Yoko and my own feelings on it. It should really have said ‘Lennon/Ono’ on that song, because she contributed a lot of that song.

Alan White (drummer): Every song we did on Imagine, John would make us read the lyrics and insist that we understood the meaning of the song before started playing it. That had quite an impact for me.

Klaus Voormann (bass): When we played ‘Imagine’ and heard the lyrics, the possibility that this was going to be such a big song was apparent. It definitely was. I even thought I didn’t want to play on it because it was so amazing with just John playing piano. It was so true and honest. That would have been enough. I hope you’ve got a version of just John playing it.

Phil McDonald (engineer): ‘Imagine’ was one of the easiest tracks to record, almost all live, in a few takes. We mixed the track at Tittenhurst and Phil Spector added strings on top of the stereo tape in the USA.

Yoko: John and I were both artists and we were living together, so we inspired each other. And the song ‘Imagine’ embodied what we believed together at the time. John and I met – he comes from the West and I come from the East – and still we are together. We have this oneness and ‘the whole world would eventually become one’ is the sense that we will all be café-au-lait colour and we will all be very happy together. All these instructions are for people for how to spend eternity, because we have lots of time.

John: If you can imagine a world of peace, if you can imagine a world with no denominations of religion – not without religion, whatever religion is – but without this divisive ‘My god is bigger than your god’ business.... Then, if you can imagine the possibility, then it can be true.

Yoko: ‘Imagine’ is a complete vision. A succinct bible of truth. It will start to unfold as you believe in it. The film? Well, it just happened naturally. I was well aware of the symbolism of everything – closing and then opening the shutters to let the light in. It’s rather personal, but I had a definite reason why I smiled at the end, in addition to loving being next to John.

  • Official Reggae History: Fred Locks - Exclusive Interview 2018

    15:22

Fred Locks - Exclusive Interview 2018

Fred Locks began his sporadic recording career as a member of the Lyrics, who recorded tracks such as ‘A Get It’, ‘Girls Like Dirt’, and ‘Hear What The Old Man Say’ for Coxsone Dodd in the late 60s, ‘Give Praises’ for Randy’s, and the self-financed ‘Sing A Long’, both in 1971. The Lyrics disbanded shortly afterwards, and Locks, discouraged by the lack of financial reward endemic to the Jamaican music business, immersed himself in the Rasta faith, which was at the time gaining significant ground among Jamaica’s ghetto youth, and he retired to live a spartan existence on the beach at Harbour View. During this time, Locks allowed his dreads to grow to a formidable length - hence his nickname - and continued to write songs, one of which, a prophetic Garveyite vision of repatriation entitled ‘Black Star Liners’, he was persuaded to record by producer Hugh Boothe.

Released in 1975 on the Jahmikmusic label in Jamaica, and on Grounation in the UK, ‘Black Star Liners’ struck a resounding chord with the new generation of Rastafarian youth on both islands, propelling Locks to cult status in the process. Two years later Grounation offshoot Vulcan officially released the long-awaited Black Star Liners/True Rastaman, a classic example of 70s roots Rasta reggae, packed with fine songs including former singles ‘Last Days’ (retitled ‘Time To Change’) and ‘Wolf Wolf’, and raw, guileless vocals. Throughout this time Locks had also been a member of the vocal trio Creation Steppers with Eric Griffiths and Willy Stepper, who had been releasing singles on their Star Of The East label in Jamaica, achieving considerable local success with ‘Stormy Night’ - later covered at Channel One by the Rolands. A various artists album entitled Love & Harmony featured the title track (also a 12-inch in Jamaica) credited to Fred Locks, and ‘Kill Nebuchadnezzar’ by the Creation Steppers also emerged, in 1979. In 1980 Locks and the Creation Steppers went to the UK for several shows and linked up with the legendary sound system operator and record producer Lloyd Coxsone, who released a number of discs by both the group and Locks, including the classic ‘steppers’ ‘Homeward Bound’, ‘Love And Only Love’ and ‘Voice Of The Poor’. These and other tracks were eventually released on Love And Only Love. Locks moved to the USA in 1982, effectively halting his and the Steppers’ career. Settling in Philadelphia, he immersed himself in the local Twelve Tribes organization, after which he recorded only sporadically. He reappeared in 1998 on the Exterminator label with the excellent ‘conscious’ album, Never Give Up, featuring a rootsy production from Philip ‘Fatis’ Burrell. The album included an updated version of ‘Black Star Liners’.

  • Milton Brown - Riding Over The Rough Spots

    3:17

This was Milton's second song after we reunited. Milton Brown and his lovely wife Laverta Lewis, were recording for me in the 1980's. Laverta first recorded with me back in 1986 as the lead singer of the group Dark Secret on the track Liar Liar Liar. She returned this year with a mid-tempo groover, sounding like a true mid 70's Blackpool Mecca floorfiller with a fine string arrangement. So, I met Milton through Laverta and recorded two singles with him in 1986 and 1987 for the Nightmare label. Over twenty years later we're reunited. In the interim period, Milton had visited his home in Norfolk Virginia, only to find himself denied re-entry to be back with his wife and kids. A problem that took a long time to sort out, but all's well that ends well, and both husband and wife are back singing together. Milton is just fabulous with his Levi Stubbs and Edwin Starr style. He is so willing, so helpful, so co-operative and such a warm hearted person. It makes me proud to have artists of this calibre working with me. We proudly bring you the video for this fantastic song which features on our album Soul Steppers, which was released in late February 2009. An album of Modern-Room style Northern Soul. Great classic retro soul owing more homage to Gamble and Huff and the sound of Philadelphia and the mid 1970's, than to the usual Sixties style. Just as the legendary Blackpool Mecca building got pulled down, the Soul Steppers album shows that they can never take away our music. Onward to a brighter day, music can lift us and make us forget what the world has to throw at us, and this album is designed to do just that. The album features songs by Rosetta Hightower, Noel McKoy, Odette Adams, Tahira Jumah, Jay Harvey, Pearly Gates, The Flirtations, Janine Johnson, Michael Lloyd Pinq and a few major surprises. Remember the whole theme of this special album - I know there's better times ahead for us.

  • Twilight Circus - UK Steppers

    6:14

This release caps off Ryan Moore's most prolific year as Twilight Circus Dub Sound System. Chalking up five albums and assorted singles, he's branched off into many directions. While none stood out head and shoulders over the rest, all had numerous highlights. Abstract Beats, along with last summer's The Dub Project, are the class of the field. As with most remix albums, it has its ups and downs through various genres: trance, garage and ambient styles are most present. Very few remixers attempt a roots strategy. Coming closest are Parice Scott's outstanding reimaging of Rolling Thunder, which may be the best track on the disc, and American dub stalwarts Alter Echo who do a fine job on Shaka. Other re-rubs are more suite-like such as Meat Beat Manifesto's Pele-inspired Highway and Phil Western's UK Steppers. - David Dacks
