    1:19

Invention no. 13 for piano, played on guitar by Miles Okazaki. Both hands of the piano part are played here with one hand, with some octave shifts to accommodate the range of the guitar. Played on a full size 1963 Gibson C-0 Classical guitar.

J.S. Bach on the Inventions and Sinfonias:
Honest method, by which the amateurs of the keyboard -- especially, however, those desirous of learning -- are shown a clear way not only (1) to learn to play cleanly in two parts, but also, after further progress, (2) to handle three obligate parts correctly and well; and along with this not only to obtain good inventions (ideas) but to develop the same well; above all, however, to achieve a cantabile style in playing and at the same time acquire a strong foretaste of composition.

This new series Live From The Jazz Gallery is where we will be posting videos & audio from past live shows. The donations received from each show will be shared directly with each artist, another way to show support for our musicians during this period of drastic loss of income.

    ---

Miles Okazaki has made a second home of The Jazz Gallery dating back to releasing his debut album Mirrors. Since then, Miles has used The Jazz Gallery stage as a platform to workshop and debut projects. In 2009, Okazaki was commissioned by The Jazz Gallery to compose and premiere a brand new project of which came out his live album Figurations, and much later in 2016 in between regular appearances, he returned with a brand new project, Trickster, which he was workshopping just before entering the studio. After the release of the album, pianist Matt Mitchell joined as Trickster's newest member when the band began touring more often, which resulted in a very tight-knit sound with the band going into many different musical territories. This performance showcases an in-between time period between the release of Trickster and The Sky Below, the band's second album.

This performance is from the second set of the March 16 2018 performance.

Gabriel Chakarji is a young pianist from Venezuela who embodies our statement Where The Future is Present. Gabriel moved to New York from Venezuela to attend The New School and has excelled as a working pianist in the New York jazz community. We were incredibly pleased with what Gabriel brought to us to present at The Jazz Gallery, music which was part of his debut album New Beginning (unreleased at the time). In his music Gabriel combines elements of jazz and Venezuelan folkloric sounds to create a sound that is unique to his experience.

This performance is from the second set of the February 6 2020 performance.
