  • The Cranberries ZOMBIE Live, Goodbye Dolores ORiordan

Zombie is a protest song by Irish rock band The Cranberries, written about the 1993 IRA bombing in Warrington, and in memory of two young victims, Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry. It was released in September 1994 as the lead single from their second studio album, No Need to Argue (1994). The song was written by the band's lead singer Dolores O'Riordan, and reached No. 1 on the charts in Australia, Belgium, France, Denmark and Germany. It won the Best Song award at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards.

On 15 January 2018, lead singer Dolores O'Riordan died unexpectedly in London, where she had arrived for a recording session.

Their music has been likened to singers such as Sinéad O'Connor and Siouxsie and the Banshees. O'Riordan stated her singing style incorporating yodeling was inspired by her father who used to sing The Lonesome Cattle Call: I just kept with my father all the time, just copying him and eventually I learned how to do it. Then over the years there were artists like Sinéad O’Connor and Siouxsie from Siouxsie and the Banshees and even Peter Harvey was doing it. It was something that you could work into The Cranberries’ format because a lot of that was used in religious Irish music.

The Cranberries rose to international fame in the 1990s with their debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, which became a commercial success.

The Cranberries are an Irish rock band formed in Limerick in 1989 by lead singer Niall Quinn (later replaced by Dolores O'Riordan), guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler. Although widely associated with alternative rock, the band's sound also incorporates indie pop, post-punk, Irish folk, and pop rock elements.

    [Verse 1]
    Another head hangs lowly
    Child is slowly taken
And the violence caused such silence
    Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me
    It's not my family
In your head, in your head, they are fightin'
With their tanks, and their bombs
And air bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head, they are cryin'

In your head, in your head
    Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie
What's in your head, in your head?
    Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie, oh

    Du, du, du, du
    Du, du, du, du
    Du, du, du, du
    Du, du, du, du

    [Verse 2]
    Another mother's breakin'
    Heart is takin' over
    When the violence causes silence
    We must be mistaken

    It's the same old theme
    Since nineteen-sixteen
In your head, in your head, they're still fightin'
With their tanks, and their bombs
And air bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head, they are dyin'

In your head, in your head
    Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie
What's in your head, in your head?
    Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie

The US Supreme Court states in Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, 510 U.S. 569 (1994) that copyrighted work is transformative if it uses a source work in completely new or unexpected ways, which is also supported by Kelly v. Arriba Soft Corporation, Perfect 10, Inc. v., Inc, Lewis Galoob Toys, Inc. v. Nintendo of America, Inc. and Sega Enterprises, Ltd. v. Accolade, Inc. The modern emphasis of transformativeness in fair use analysis stems from a 1990 article by Judge Pierre N. Leval in the Harvard Law Review, Toward a Fair Use Standard, which the Court quoted and cited extensively in its Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, 510 U.S. 569 (1994) opinion. In his article, Leval explained the social importance of transformative use of another's work and what justifies such a taking:

[If] the secondary use adds value to the original--if the quoted matter is used as raw material, transformed in the creation of new information, new aesthetics, new insights and understandings--this is the very type of activity that the fair use doctrine intends to protect for the enrichment of society.

Transformative uses may include criticizing the quoted work, exposing the character of the original author, proving a fact, or summarizing an idea argued in the original in order to defend or rebut it. They also may include parody, symbolism, aesthetic declarations, and innumerable other uses.

  • Dolores ORiordan Dead Cranberries Linger

Linger by The Cranberries is a tribute to their great lead singer Dolores O'Riordan who died unexpectedly on January 15, 2018. She was just 23 when The Cranberries performed at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles in 1994 (video thumbnail).

Los Angeles Times article: Dolores O'Riordan, whose urgent, powerful voice helped make the Irish rock band the Cranberries a global success in the 1990s, died suddenly on Monday at a London hotel. She was 46.

The singer's publicist, Lindsey Holmes, confirmed she died in London, where she was recording, No further details are available at this time, Holmes said, adding that the singer's family was devastated by the news.

London's Metropolitan Police force said officers were called just after 9 a.m. Monday to a hotel where a woman in her 40s was found dead. The police force said the death was being treated as unexplained. The Hilton Hotel in London's Park Lane confirmed that a guest had died on the premises.

Irish President Michael D. Higgins said O'Riordan and the Cranberries had an immense influence on rock and pop music in Ireland and internationally.

To all those who follow and support Irish music, Irish musicians and the performing arts, her death will be a big loss, Higgins said in a statement.

O'Riordan was born Sept. 6, 1971, in Ballybricken, southwest Ireland. In 1990, she answered an ad from a local band in nearby Limerick city — then called the Cranberry Saw Us — that was looking for a lead singer.

A name change and a confluence of factors turned the Cranberries into international stars. Their guitar-based sound had an alternative-rock edge at a time when grunge was storming the music scene.

The band's songs — on which O'Riordan was chief lyricist and co-songwriter — had a Celtic-infused tunefulness. And in O'Riordan they had a charismatic lead singer with a distinctively powerful voice.

Heavy play on MTV for their debut single Dream and the singles that followed helped bring the group to the attention of a mass audience.

The Cranberries' 1993 debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, sold millions of copies and produced the hit single Linger.

The follow-up album, No Need to Argue, sold in even greater numbers and contained Zombie, a visceral howl against Northern Ireland's violent Troubles that topped singles charts in several countries.

The band released three more studio albums before splitting up in 2003. O'Riordan released the solo album Are You Listening in 2007 and another, No Baggage, in 2009.

The members of the Cranberries reunited that year, releasing the album Roses in 2012.

For a time, O'Riordan was one of Ireland's richest women, but she struggled with both physical and mental health problems.

The Cranberries released the acoustic album Something Else in 2017 and had been due to tour Europe and North America. The tour was cut short because O'Riordan was suffering from back problems.
--- update September 2018: The death of Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan has been ruled a “tragic accident” at an inquest at Westminster Coroner’s Court, the BBC reports.

O’Riordan died by drowning after excessive drinking. Expert witnesses said the singer showed no sign or evidence of self-harm. O’Riordan was found dead in the bathtub at her London hotel January 15th. She was 46.

Officials told the inquest that they found empty bottles of alcohol in O’Riordan’s hotel room, including five miniature bottles and a bottle of champagne. There were also containers of prescription drugs with tablets in each, though a toxicology report showed that O’Riordan had only “therapeutic” amounts of medication in her blood. However, her blood alcohol levels were more than four times over the legal driving limit.

The surviving members of the Cranberries released a statement following the inquest, saying, “On January 15th 2018 we lost our dear friend and band mate Dolores O’Riordan. Today we continue to struggle to come to terms with what happened. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dolores’ children and her family and our thoughts are with them today. Dolores will live on eternally in her music. To see how much of a positive impact she had on people’s lives has been a source of great comfort to us.”

The Cranberries will release a 25th anniversary edition of their debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?, October 19th. The Irish rock outfit began planning the project last year, but put it on hold after O’Riordan’s death. In March, the band announced they were moving ahead with the reissue, as well as a new album they’d begun to record.

  • The Very Best Of Dolores ORiordan & The Cranberries Chrizly-Charts Special

Another sad day for music fans all around the world: On January 15th Dolores O'Riordan passed away - she was only 46. O'Riordan was lead-singer and guitarrist for the Irish alternative rock band 'The Cranberries'. She joined the group in 1990 after auditioning by writing lyrics and melodies to some existing demos. She was hired and success would soon follow: In 1994 MTV put their video to 'Linger' into heavy rotation. Their debut album 'Everything Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?' topped the UK Charts. Their follow-up album 'No Need To Argue' became a world-wide success, reaching #6 in the US album charts and receiving triple platinum. More albums followed and in 2007 O'Riordan started her solo career, releasing the album 'Are You Listening' and in 2009 'No Baggage'. After reuniting with her band they released two more albums including 'Something Else' in 2017. Unfortunately the band had to cancel touring plans due to an illness and now the shocking passing of O'Riordan.

In this tribute I put together her 20 best songs in my opinion - including solo songs. Hope you enjoy! What is your favorite song and memory of Dolores O'Riordan and the Cranberries?

No copyright infringement intended you can buy and stream all these songs in your favorite store in full length. No money is made with these videos, they are simply a hobby to celebrate music.

  • Remembering Denny DeMarchi

We're very sad and sorry to report that Denny DeMarchi lost his battle to cancer yesterday. Denny was an experienced singer/songwriter/pianist and guitarist who played in studio and on tour with Dolores O'Riordan and toured with The Cranberries from 2009-2011. Additionally, he was the lead singer of Rockzoid, produced and engineered for the Killer Bees and played keyboards on the 1990 No. 1 Billboard hit song More Than Words Can Say by the band Alias, which featured his brother, Steve DeMarchi on guitar. You may remember that Steve also played guitar and sang back up as a touring musician with The Cranberries from 96-03 and collaborated with Dolores again during the Are You Listening? era.
On a personal level, Denny was incredibly kind, empathetic, a great listener and had a great sense of humor. We had the opportunity to get to know each other. We spoke about everything from music to spirituality. He was very proud of the experience of playing at Royal Albert Hall in London with The Cranberries on their Reunion Tour and the thrilling energy from the massive audience in response to playing linger in Chile with Dolores in 2007.
On a spiritual level, Denny expressed that he believes that when someone passes, they are not really gone. That they continue to live on, in some form.
Denny, was very proud of some of his new solo material he was working on. Before he got sick, he asked if we could collaborate and produce a music video for a song he was working on. While this wasn't able to come into fruition, here is a little tribute to Denny using his song from his band Rockzoid called All Your Fault, with Denny on vocals. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Steve and the rest of the DeMarchi family at this time. We'll miss you Denny, but you'll forever be in our hearts!
