  • Top 5 Mixing Mistakes No One Talks About

    24:41

➡️➡️Click here to learn more about the mixing mistakes no one talks about & download the cheat sheet:

1.EQ with your Ears NOT your Eyes!

Always make EQ moves based on what you hear first, not what you see! Using EQs with Frequency Analysers can be such a rewarding thing when you’re looking for a frequency that’s bothering you, but relying on visual cues alone to make EQ adjustments will not give you great results. Just because there’s a peak doesn’t mean it has to be removed, that might the inherent characteristic of the instrument. When you hear something that bothers you and you need a visual cue to find it then a frequency analyzer is an amazing tool!

2.You Don’t Need to Compress Everything

Not everything needs to be compressed! So many virtual sounds, fat synth sounds and of course very heavy guitars will not benefit from compression and often sound much smaller with added compression. Live drums give you a wealth of not only different dynamics and uneven EQ based on how they are performed and so they require more compression than programmed drums that have been recorded in perfect conditions with very evenly sampled drum hits. Compression (especially vintage units or emulations) can be used for certain colours, adding saturation and even an EQ characteristic, however, as a dynamic controller you should focus using it on overly dynamic sounds like Vocals and other acoustic instruments, while using it sparingly on instruments that have a very limited dynamics range but may require some added colouration that compression may bring.

3.Not Everything Has To Be Stereo

When everything is in stereo, overheads, pianos, room mics, reverbs, delays, stereo recorded guitars, you name it, then nothing starts to feel wide! If you want width then be selective what you put in the sides! Hard panned guitars Left and Right feel great when the ambience is only opposite, as soon as it’s smeared in the stereo field then the guitar sound doesn’t feel focussed! If you make the overheads full 100% left and right then you set the limits of the width of your mix, try 70% or 80% panning of your overheads and room mics and then the hard panned guitars will start to feel like they are spilling out of the left and right speakers!

4.Don’t Start Processing The Tracks Until You’ve Got Basic Levels and Panning

Create what you think is a good sounding rough mix getting basic balances and panning on every track first. This will tell you so much more than just starting to mix using EQ and compression. Hearing the tracks back relatively balanced and panned, allows you to choose which tracks need extra EQ or high passing and/or compression. Ultimately the lesson is to always listen as a whole! We all solo, however making sure the changes you are making works in the whole song is of paramount importance!

    5.Do Less!!

Professional mixers always say that when they get sessions to mix and the first thing they do is remove an enormous amount of plug ins on each track and suddenly the song starts to come to life! We can tie ourselves in so many knots by continually adding EQ and compression until everything instrument feels flat and lifeless! Soon the more you do the more you have to do! Take frequent ear breaks to gain perspective and always remember to listen to the song as a whole.

    - putting Autotune on the beat
    - wrong Autotune settings or adding Autotune to vocals that weren’t recorded with it and doesn’t sound good
    - don’t overthink
    - don’t mix with your eyes and go off of numbers alone trust your ears

  • FL STUDIO - THE BIGGEST MIXING MISTAKE PRODUCERS MAKE EVERYTIME

    7:29

Producers make beats WAY too loud and leave no room for head room and dynamics. This is why your 808 isn't hitting hard and the reason you can't feel your beats. You can have your 808 and kick hit without everything into the red. If you try not to clip the individual mixer channels and only aim to distort/clip the master, you'll change the way your beats sound.

Leaving headroom is important if you want people to FEEL the beat and hear the nuance!

  • 6 Common Reverb Mistakes to Avoid

    15:50

➡️➡️Click here to download the cheat sheet:
    ➡️➡️3 Vocal Reverb Tips:
    ➡️➡️5 Quick Reverb Mixing Tricks:

    1. Forgetting to EQ Your Reverbs
On my track, there is a reverb in my snare, and what I’ve also done is high passed before the reverb, because there is a low rumble at about 30 or 40 hertz, that we just don’t need to hear. What will happen if you don’t high pass, is the reverb will exaggerate that low end and give us a horrible, ugly, rumble which will kill all the definition and make the low end a mess.

    2. Setting the Wrong Reverb Time
If there is a second between the end of one phrase and the start of another, you would think to put a second’s worth of decay on it, but I would actually set it a little bit longer, because there comes a point when it is decaying and it will be pretty inaudible.

Use your DAW to find out how long it is between each phrase, and use that to get an idea of what works. Going slightly longer than the projected time is generally a good strategy, though, because then you will not get to a point where the decay is inaudible.

    3. Putting Reverbs Directly on Audio Tracks
If you put the reverb on the track directly, especially after you’ve been mixing, it is going to completely change the level. For example, If you have a lead vocal, and you want to make it sound like it’s just coming forward a bit, putting the reverb on the track will suddenly make it much quieter and you will not get the desired effect. Instead, create an auxiliary, and put the reverb on there, preferably with some EQ either on or before the reverb as well!

    4. Underestimating Stock Reverbs
Whatever your DAW is, I am sure the stock effects in there are actually pretty darn good! It is also better to get to know your stock reverbs really well before you add on to it. So take some time and see what reverbs are already included in your DAW!

    5. Not Automating Your Reverbs
In my track, I’ve got the short reverbs going through the whole some, and they don’t change volume, but when we hit the chorus, where the song is much denser, the reverb and delay come up. Doing this is not going to make the whole track feel like it has been reverberated, but it help it to sound the same as it did on the verse!

    6. Having Too Many Types of Reverbs
I like to use multiple reverbs at different level. I actually find that using three reverbs on a vocal is pretty normal. However, getting to carried away and using something really subtly different on 30 different instruments is a waste of time. As much as I love putting ambience on something, there are better ways of doing it!

You want to have control of things, and the last thing you want is to have so many different plugins going that you hear a buildup of reverb, and you can’t figure out where it is coming from. Make your life simple, and make sure you employ effects for a reason!

  • 3 EQ Mistakes We All Make!

    18:28

➡️➡️Click here to download the cheat sheet:
➡️➡️Click here to learn more about these common EQ mistakes:

    1. Overusing Sweep EQ
I realize that as a beginner you are encouraged by everyone to use sweep EQs, but they are not always beneficial for your mix. I actually can’t remember the last time I used a sweep EQ! If I take any EQ band and boost it to 5, 10, 15, 20 dB, no matter how narrow it is, I don’t have to move something very far before it is completely and utterly obnoxious. If you are sweeping to find bad things, you will always find bad things. After applying that sweep EQ, the track will likely sound flat and lifeless.

Instead, trust yourself and your ears! When you hear something horrible, that is when you look for where it is and fix it. If you are not hearing anything offensive, don’t go looking for things that are offensive. Trust yourself and make decisions based on what you hear.

    2. Not Using High and Low Passing
Any tracks you mix are going to have buildup in certain frequencies, and in that low end – from about 20 to 200 Hertz – it can be an absolute mess. This is where you go in and start getting creative! If you are listening to an instrument and you are not hearing a reason for it to have excessive low end or excessive high end, get rid of it and you will create some real clarity. There is a lot of confusion about this, but high passing and low passing and gentle EQ moves are very useful, and are such powerful tools when it comes to shaping your low and high end.

    3. Applying EQ to Solve Problems That Aren’t Persistent in the Mix
If we EQ to fix problems that are only present in certain areas, the part can start to sound really narrow and thin. For example, on a chord, it might seem like good idea to take out certain frequencies, but if the same guitar player plays an arpeggio immediately after that and concentrates on high strings, suddenly all the low end or low mids that were reinforcing that beautiful high line are taken away. In cases like this, you have to be selective of where you apply the EQ, and don’t be afraid to automate so that the EQ is applied only where it is truly needed!

  • 5 Compression Mistakes We All Make

    21:36

➡️➡️Click here to download the 5 Compression Mistakes We All Make cheat sheet:
➡️➡️Click here to learn more about these common compression mistakes:

Today, I am sharing 5 Compression Mistakes We All Make! From using the wrong attack or release time, to not truly knowing why we are compressing something, these are things we are all guilty of!

    5. Using Too Fast an Attack Time
This is probably one you have heard before, and I think that is quite valid, because if you use an extremely fast attack time, you are going to mess with your transient, especially with a plugin compressor, which has faster attack times than any piece of hardware could ever do. With plugins, you have look-ahead compressors, which basically annihilate that transient immediately. In most cases, you don’t actually want to do that.

    4. Too Slow of a Release Time
You want your release time to be fast enough that it gets out of the way of the next transient, but you don’t want it to be so fast that it’s not really working. On the acoustic guitar I have been working on, when I slowed down the release time too much, it wasn’t getting out of the way of the next big transient, and ended up totally annihilating it, which is not something we want to happen!

    3. Compressing For The Sake Of It
Are you just opening up your compressor and putting on the track because you feel like you should, or because you actually need to? It is so important to listen to your sources and make sure you understand exactly where you actually need a compressor, and where you do not.

Compressors are not just about controlling volume and dynamics, they are also providing you with different sounds. So before you reach for your compressor ask yourself why you are using it and make sure you have a reason.

    2. Using Presets
I have experimented with presets and I like them when I am starting to get to know a piece of equipment. However, using a preset does not guarantee you the perfect sound. The person who created that preset, no matter how great they are, has not heard your source, they do not know what you are going to be running through that compressor, or how it was recorded.

Presets can be great tools to use as a starting place, or to get ideas of things you could do, but ultimately, learning you compressor, understanding how attack and release work, how the threshold works, and how to apply them is going to be a thousand times better than any preset.

    1. Using Compression
The compressor is a tool that we often reach for in this digital world. However, the compressor is not the be all end all, and there may actually be other tools that will get you even better results. for example, saturation can be a way to round off transients in your snare, and may actually give you a louder, fuller sound than you would have gotten if you had used a compressor to round off the transients instead.

    --------------------------------------ABOUT THIS VIDEO--------------------------------------

In today's world producers are now more and more responsible for not only being great producers but also great mixers.

Thanks to the beat licensing business it is very common today to see a producer not only produce an instrumental but also mix the whole thing themselves before it even reaches an artist or an engineer.

In today's video, I go over what I consider to be the 3 most common beat mixing mistakes from aspiring music producers and offer some practical ways to fix them. Enjoy!

To commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the Recording Revolution, I’d like to share with you the top 5 mixing tutorials I’ve done over the years.

    1. Mixing in Mono -

This is an old tip from audio school that I thought never made sense, but when I started using it years later - I realised how much it could help a mix!

    2. The Low-End Mix Trick -

This is a trick I learned in France in an in-depth workshop with Jacquire King, and it’ll show you how to get the low end of your mix in its perfect sweet spot

    3. Vocal Air Trick In Mixing -

If you want your vocals to have that polished “air” found in modern pop, rock, and country records, this trick is for you

    4. 5 Minutes To A Better Mix: LCR Panning -

Just following this tip alone will give you the wide, clear mixes that you’ve always wanted. It’s not exactly the panning tip that people want to hear, but trust me - it’s a great hack to get your mixes sounding right.

    5. How To Master A Song In 10 Minutes -

Mastering might seem like a dark art to most people, but it’s quite simple to do inside your DAW, and you don’t need an entire mastering suite of plugins to do it.

In this video, I show you how to do it in just a few minutes!
