Edit: RIP Afrobeat true legend, your music was an inspiration for me through my life since i've listened to you with Fela Kuti for the first time. You, throughout your music and drum lines, will never be missed. Thank you so much for everything.

From the 2014 album called Film of Life. This is the unedited album version.

Release: Offering an exciting sneak preview of Film of Life, the new album from Tony Allen due for release next October on JazzVillage, the poignant ballad Go Back was written with Damon Albarn, who features on vocals and keyboards. Set to a sensual and hypnotic beat, the two musicians have created a homage to the African refugees who ended up on the Italian island of Lampedusa. This is a dazzling new masterpiece to add to the collective adventures of the brilliant English jack-of-all-trades and the cult Nigerian drummer, whose paths first crossed over ten years ago for the album Homecooking, followed by The Good, the Bad and the Queen and Africa Express.

I do not own the rights of this song.

“Nineteen Seventeen” the new album by The Good, The Bad & The Queen - Out Now:

The Good, The Bad & The Queen are:
    Damon Albarn
    Paul Simonon
    Simon Tong
    Tony Allen

    Percussion - Karl Vanden Bossche
Strings performed by The Demon Strings
    Cello - Isabelle Dunn
    Viola - Stella Page
    Violin - Antonia Pagulatos
    Violin - Kotono Sato

Follow The Good, The Bad & The Queen:

    Nineteen Seventeen

I see myself moving backwards in time today
From a place we can’t remain close to anymore
    My heart is heavy
Because it looks just like my home
    Pylons rapeseed fields
    Powdered skies and trees alone
Thousands of white crosses in a cemetery
I freeze the frame from a passing train

Are you still there or am I losing you?
    And every moment lost
    Is telling to my heart
    Puts me on the form
For silent treatment from the forces above
    Our dependence on new gods
    Because I’m just passing through
    On this battlefield
    Where we played our games
    And went insane

And we waltzed around the world
As though we were off our heads
    And I say why
Why are we not brought to book
    And where are we today
    Dissolution
    Our lousy love affairs
If you don’t love me let me go
And as I come up again
I leave a little bit of England
    In a field in France

    RIBBONS
    I am the Maypole
    Dancing with the sun
I wear my ribbons white and red
    I am the morning
    Flowers in my hair
I am your son and heir Mother

I am the Mast horse riding out to war
I wear my ribbons white and blue
    I am the arrow
    Stinging in your side
I will never let you go

    I am the last king
    Standing on the hill
I wear my ribbons white, red and green
    I am the visions
    The night before the fair
When you don’t want me anymore
    And you’re not there

    I am a murder
    All falling out the sky
I wear my ribbons black until I die
I am the dark wood, the river and the blood
    I am the lover lost

    I am the Maypole
    Dancing with the sun
I only wear my ribbons for you
    I am the morning
    With flowers in my hair

  • Tony Allen & Hugh Masekela - Never

    Subscribe to World Circuit -

'Never (Lagos Never Gonna Be The Same' is the new single taken from Tony Allen & Hugh Masekela's very special collaboration 'Rejoice', out March 20th on World Circuit.
    Preorder or Presave:

The track, which features vocals from Masekela, is a jazz-meets-Afrobeat-hued tribute to Fela Kuti, the towering pioneer of Afrobeat who collaborated closely with Allen for decades and had a powerful influence on both men’s lives, musically and politically.

Having first met in the 70s thanks to their respective close associations with Fela Kuti, the two world-renowned musicians talked for decades about making an album together. When, in 2010, their touring schedules coincided in the UK, the moment presented itself and producer Nick Gold took the opportunity to record their encounter. The unfinished sessions, consisting of all original compositions by the pair, lay in archive until after Masekela passed away in 2018. With renewed resolution, Tony Allen and Nick Gold, with the blessing and participation of Hugh Masekela’s estate, unearthed the original tapes and finished recording the album in summer 2019 at the same London studio where the original sessions had taken place.

‘Rejoice’ can be seen as the long overdue confluence of two mighty African musical rivers – a union of two free-flowing souls for whom borders, whether physical or stylistic, are things to pass through or ignore completely. According to Allen, the album deals in “a kind of South African-Nigerian swing-jazz stew”, with its roots firmly in Afrobeat. Allen and Masekela are accompanied on the record by a new generation of well-respected jazz musicians including Tom Herbert (Acoustic Ladyland / The Invisible), Joe Armon-Jones (Ezra Collective), Mutale Chashi (Kokoroko) and Steve Williamson.

    Lyrics:
    [Verse 1]
When you see the stained reflections of city lights
But you're far away at sea, with all the satellites
    And the runaways

    [Chorus]
What am I gonna do with you if you go back?
    You're a run away
What am I gonna do with you if you go back?
    You're a run away

    [Verse 2]
    And when the harbormaster comes
To switch off the lights (Switch off the lights)
And the waiting rooms are empty
    Of everyone

    [Chorus]
    Does anyone
What am I gonna do with you if you go back?
    Does anyone
What am I gonna do with you if you go back?

    [Post-Chorus]
    Does anyone see?
You left out on the rocks
    (You gotta go back)
    [Verse 3]
    When the only way home
Is a southern star, (Is a southern star)
And the backside view of you is Saturday

    [Chorus]
    And anyway
What am I gonna do with you if you go back?
    Does anyone
What am I gonna do with you if you go back?

    [Post-Chorus]
    Does anyone see?
You left out on the rocks
    You've made yourself a cross
    (You gotta go back)

    [Outro]
What am I gonna do with you if you go back?
What am I gonna do with you if you go back?

In case you missed it - re-watch World Circuit's listening party for Tony Allen & Hugh Masekela's collaborative album 'Rejoice', released in March 2020.

Featuring in-depth conversations between Tony Allen, producer Nick Gold and Hugh Masekela's nephew Mabusha Masekela.

‘Rejoice’ is a very special collaboration between Tony Allen, the legendary drummer and co-founder of Afrobeat, and Hugh Masekela, the master trumpet player of South African jazz.
