  • TOMMY TUTONE ☆ 867 5309 jenny【HD】

    3:44

Tommy Tutone were an early-'80s power pop band led by vocalist Tommy Heath and guitarist Jim Keller. The group's first single, 1980's Angel Say No, scraped the bottom of the American Top 40, yet it was 1981's 867-5309/Jenny that sent the group to the top of the charts. Peaking in early 1982, the single hit number four and went gold. Tommy Tutone was never able to duplicate that success and the band broke up after the release of their third album, 1983's National Emotion.

Jenny, Jenny, who can I turn to?
You give me something I can hold onto
I know you think I'm like the others before
Who saw your name and number on the wall

    Jenny, I got your number,
I need to make you mine.

Jenny, Jenny, you're the girl for me.
You don't know me but you make me so happy.
I tried to call you before but I lost my nerve.
I tried my imagination, but I was disturbed.

    Jenny, I got your number,

In this lesson I am gonna show you a note-for-note breakdown of how to play 867-5309/Jenny, the 80's smash hit by Tommy Tutone.

There are quite a lot of cool guitar riffs to learn in this one, many of them layered on top of one another. For the most part though, each section does have a dominant guitar part so playing the whole song with just one guitar can sound fine.

We start with that classic intro that is instantly recognizable. For the beginner level player this opening riff can be a nice arpeggiated picking exercise.

From there we launch into the main chord riff consisting of mostly power chords with a couple of cool licks thrown in.

The double-stop lick that happens during this section occurs a few times during the song so you will want to master it. It makes for a nice challenge as well to play it up to speed. I like to use hybrid picking for guitar riffs like this and I suggest you try to do the same. You will be able to control the sound of the notes much better that way.

As we move on through the lesson, I will also be showing you some overdubs that are played over the verse. You can choose to play those or not. I think they can be a nice way of keeping the sound varied since the verse and chorus are so similar.

During the bridge section you will need to be able to confidently play barre chords that move around at a pretty quick tempo. There is also some arpeggiated picking going on here as well.

Finally, we make it to the solo. I think the solo is really cool and has sort of a dark quality about it for such a poppy song. It is very blues influenced and contains some subtle bends, slides and staccato notes. I suggest listening to the original recording multiple times until you have the solo memorized by ear before learning it in this video lesson. Or you can just listen to my performance over and over again. :)

So have fun with this 80's rock classic!

    Carl...

    MI BANDA/MY BAND

    INFORMATION ENGLISH
The performance was so horrible that some of the audience left, according to a review.

Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers played trumpet on Smells Like Teen Spirit.

After Territorial Pissings, Kurt dove into the audience, smashed his guitar, and gave pieces of it to the crowd.

About 40 minutes into the set, Krist hurled his bass at Kurt and walked offstage. The band was under contract to play for 90 minutes, so the crew had to retrieve Krist to finish the set. When Krist returned, he picked up his tossed bass from the stage and didn't bother to retune it or swap it out.

After Krist returned to the stage, guitar tech Earnie Bailey rolled a canteloupe onstage like a bowling ball. Kurt picked it up and started smashing it on his guitar strings, playing his guitar with the canteloupe.

For a large part of the show, the band switched instruments, with Kurt on drums, Krist on guitar, and Dave on bass.

For a cover of Queen's We Will Rock You, Kurt changed the lyrics to We will fuck you.

867-5309/Jenny is a 1981 song written by Alex Call and Jim Keller and performed by Tommy Tutone that was released on the album Tommy Tutone 2, on the Columbia Records label. It peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #16 on the Billboard Top Tracks chart in May 1982 (see 1982 in music).
The song caused a fad of people dialing 867-5309 and asking for Jenny

In a June 2004 interview with Songfacts, co-writer Alex Call explained his version of the song's real origins:
Despite all the mythology to the contrary, I actually just came up with the 'Jenny,' and the telephone number and the music and all that just sitting in my backyard. There was no Jenny. I don't know where the number came from, I was just trying to write a 4-chord Rock song and it just kind of came out. This was back in 1981 when I wrote it, and I had at the time a little squirrel-powered 4-track in this industrial yard in California, and I went up there and made a tape of it. I had the guitar lick, I had the name and number, but I didn't know what the song was about. This buddy of mine, Jim Keller, who's the co-writer, was the lead guitar player in Tommy Tutone. He stopped by that afternoon and he said, 'Al, it's a girl's number on a bathroom wall,' and we had a good laugh. I said, 'That's exactly right, that's exactly what it is.'
Tommy Tutone's been using the story for years that there was a Jenny and she ran a recording studio and so forth. It makes a better story but it's not true. That sounds a lot better than I made it up under a plum tree in my backyard.
I had the thing recorded. I had the name and number, and they were in the same spots, 'Jenny... 867-5309.' I had all that going, but I had a blind spot in the creative process, I didn't realize it would be a girl's number on a bathroom wall. When Jim showed up, we wrote the verses in 15 or 20 minutes, they were just obvious. It was just a fun thing, we never thought it would get cut. In fact, even after Tommy Tutone made the record and '867-5309' got on the air, it really didn't have a lot of promotion to begin with, but it was one of those songs that got a lot of requests and stayed on the charts. It was on the charts for 40 weeks.
I've met a few Jennys who've said, Oh, you're the guy who ruined my high school years. But for the most part, Jennys are happy to have the song.

  • The Grifters Prayer Tommy Tutone

    5:07

third song from the1998 album Tutone.rtf

    lyrics:

i know where i come from.
    a blue collar drinking man
and i'm gonna get me some.
i pray to jesus' name, and god forsake him,
another 10 miles on my knees today

i pray to grifters gone before
is that magic around any more?
boy, you guys sure did have the touch.
can you put in a word for me?
i need to win the lottery of love.
i pray to jesus name, and god forsake him
another 10 miles on my knees today

i bought myself a brown candle
i burned it three nights in a row
i need some luck; it's my turn, you know

sometimes i try to think it through
    but i'm not qualified;
stop me before i think again
they say jesus saves without a passbook
i sure could use some of that luck today

i pray to jesus, mary, anybody
another 10 miles on my knees today
a million here, a million there
before you know you got some real money
i've got a good idea; we could franchise it
    people will never realize
    they could live without it
    i pray to jesus, mary magdeline;
i know i've lived a life of sin but help me out
one last time (for old time's sake)

    i said a prayer; i drank a beer
i said look out, irish tommy's here
i know where i come from
    blue collar drinking man
and i'm gonna get me some

    jesus, open your passbook
    i know i've never made a deposit
but i need to make a withdrawal tonight.
