    FAQ

Q: I appreciate the work you're doing; how can I support it?
A: Thank you! The easiest way to support my work is by contributing via Patreon:

If you'd like to help in more specific way, consider this:

Q: Where can I get free sheet music for this piece?
A: Sheet music for this can be found here:

Q: Who wrote Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor?
Q: Isn't that like asking who's buried in Grant's Tomb?
A: Heh-heh. A theory has recently (1981) been put forth that J. S. Bach did not write this piece. A brief summary of the supporting evidence for this theory can be read here:

Q: Where can I get the mp3 of this?
A: You can download it here:

Q: What does the piece look like as a whole?
A: There are versions you can print out here

The 'scroll' version is for cutting out and taping together to form a long strip.

Q: Where can I get the MIDI file that this was made from?
A: I'm not sure it's exactly the same, but the closest I could find was this:

Q: How did you make this video?
A: You can read about it here:

Q: What is the BWV number for this?
    A: BWV 565

Q: Where does the toccata end and the fugue begin?
A: The fugue starts at 2:51 and the toccata returns at 7:12, but between these two points, parts which are strictly fugal alternate with episodes that are more toccata-like, so it's not 100% clear-cut (like in some other toccata/fugue pairs he wrote).

Q: What do the colors mean?
A: Each stop on the organ was played on a separate MIDI channel, and each MIDI channel was assigned a color.

    Q: What is a fugue?
A: Here is a good introduction:

Q: Can I get a DVD with this video (or others like it)?
    A: Yes:

Q: Could you please do a video of _________?
    A: See:

Q: Where can I read more about this piece?
A: Here are a couple of places:

Q: Why does this piece of music remind me of horror movies?
A: Because it was used in the 1962 version of The Phantom of the Opera. Before that, it did not have that connotation. When Walt Disney and Leopold Stokowski used it in the 1940 film Fantasia, they considered it to be a purely abstract piece --- absolute music --- which brought to mind expressionistic forms and lines.

More Fugue than Toccata in my new arrangement of J.S. Bach's masterpiece Toccata and Fugue in D minor. I did my best to keep all of the counterpoint in tact, while still allowing a main melody line to emerge as the lead guitar part. My favorite piece of music since I can remember and I've always wanted to make my own rock or metal arrangement of it, but wanted to make sure I could do it justice (hence why I've waited all of these years to make it). it was extremely challenging but fun and rewarding to make.

My own transcription of one of J.S. Bach's most infamous and popular works. I first had the idea of playing this piece in 2013 after hearing an old Russian transcription performed by the incredible Varvara Ivanova, but couldn't get hold of that version due to it being out of print. I loved the power this piece brings to the harp and was determined to try it for myself as I'm a huge fan of anything where I get to play LOUD! The process of adapting the piece for the harp and preparing for this performance took 18 months and many, many practice hours! Its first public performance was as the opening piece of my Masters final recital at the Royal Academy of Music, London in July 2014. Yes I know, how crazy was I to open my recital with this...I then had to play for a further 35 minutes!

All notes in this transcription are Bach's - there are a few moments where certain notes have been omitted where it was impossible to play, but nothing has been added or embellished in terms of pitches or rhythms. My aim in transcribing this was to be as accurate and respectful to the original as I possibly could, whilst also exploring the greater dynamic possibilities with regards to quiets, crescendos and diminuendos that are possible on the harp. I absolutely loved recreating the sound of different manuals/stops in certain repeated passages of the fugue - this is achieved by playing lower in the strings before returning back to the middle where I'd normally play.

  • XAVER VARNUS PLAYS BACHS TOCCATA & FUGUE IN THE BERLINER DOM

    12:11

Xaver Varnus plays Toccata and Fugue in D minor on the great Sauer Organ of the Berliner Dom. Recorded live on the Opening Night of the Berliner Internationaler Orgelsommer 2013. At the time of its dedication in 1905, the great Sauer Organ of the Berliner Dom was the largest in Germany, with its 7269 pipes and 113 registers, distributed across four manuals and pedals. The court organ builder Wilhelm Sauer, from Frankfurt on the Oder, created an instrument that embodied the newest technical and musical developments of German organ building at the time. In that way, the organ met the high expectations of both the organ builder and his client: in the Protestant Cathedral of the capital city, there was to be a monumental, modern, and in every way extraordinary instrument of the highest quality. The organ of the Cathedral of Berlin represents the highpoint of Sauer’s career. At the same time, it marks the end of the long development of Romantic orchestral organs, whose sound corresponds to the characteristic sound of a symphonic orchestra of that period. Today, the organ in the Cathedral of Berlin is the largest late-Romantic pneumatic action organ in the world that has survived in its original condition.

•●The Official Video Site of Concert Organist Xaver Varnus●•

Born in Budapest, his first piano teacher was Emma Németh, one of the last pupils of Claude Debussy. Xaver Varnus has played virtually every important organ in the world, including those in Bach's Thomaskirche in Leipzig (2014), Berliner Dom (2013), Notre-Dame (1981), Saint-Sulpice (2006) and Saint-Eustache (1996) in Paris, National Shrine in Washington, D.C. (1985), and Canterbury Cathedral (2004), as well as the largest existing instrument in the world, the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia (1985). His Quadruple Platinum Disc winning album From Ravel to Vangelis, released by Sony BMG in 2007, is the best-selling organ CD ever. As a Canadian citizen, Xaver Varnus resides in Berlin, Germany. Put simply, Varnus is a monster talent, every bit as stimulating and individual as the late Glenn Gould (The Globe & Mail, Canada's National Newspaper).

First recording of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor with the harmonic piano pedal. I set up an overhead camera view in case any of you want fingering suggestions.
The sheet music I used in this video is fairly close to the first link below. I just added octaves to bring out the pedal part in a few places.

This piece was recorded in an average size room; the reverb you can hear is sympathetic resonance from the piano itself made possible by the harmonic pedal.

  • Bach: Toccata and Fugue, BWV 565 - Tariq Harb, guitar

    9:22

Guitarist Tariq Harb performs J.S. Bach's monumental Toccata and Fugue, BWV 565. This is an adaptation for solo guitar by Edson Lopes.

The Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565, is a musical composition in two parts for organ, written sometime between 1708 and 1750 by Johann Sebastian Bach, and known for its majestic sound, dramatic authority, and driving rhythm. The piece is perhaps most widely known due to its appearance in the opening minutes of the 1940 Disney cult classic Fantasia, in which it was adapted for orchestra by the conductor Leopold Stokowski. It also has a strong association in Western culture with horror films; it was included in films such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931), The Black Cat (1934) and The Phantom of the Opera (1962).

The first part of Bach’s piece is a toccata, the name of which is derived from the Italian toccare, “to touch.” It represents a musical form for keyboard instruments that is designed to reveal the virtuosity of the performer’s touch. Bach’s take on the toccata is typical in that it has many fast arpeggios and runs up and down the keyboard but otherwise is generally free form and gives the composer much latitude for personal expression. In Bach’s day, toccatas often served as introductions to and foils for fugues, setting the stage for the complex and intricate composition to follow.

The fugue — a technique characterized by the overlapping repetition of a principal theme in different melodic lines (counterpoint) — that is the second part of Bach’s composition reflects the particular popularity of the form during the late 1600s and early 1700s. Bach made much use of the fugue in his compositions, most famously in solo organ pieces such as this one but also in instrumental works and choral cantatas. This particular fugue is quite unusual in its form; it is a plagal fugue using plagal cadences as opposed to the authentic cadences that Bach usually employs. It also does not introduce the subject in all the voices one after the other in the beginning of the fugue. Instead, Bach slips in sequences in between the announcements of the subjects which is again quite unusual for a Baroque fugue. The fugue, with its accompanying toccata, is not only the best known of Bach’s many fugues but the most famous of fugues by any composer.

    9:17

From Disney’s Fantasia to The Phantom of the Opera, the opening of the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, performed by Leo van Doeselaar for All of Bach, has provided many memorable moments. The secret is in the striking first note, followed by that brief, tense moment of silence and the overpowering descending series of notes (or variations on it, like in Pirates of the Caribbean). Unfortunately, Bach’s own score has not survived, which has led to many speculations on the creation date of this wild and original composition that is actually not very ‘Bach-like’.

    9:42

October 25, 2010 marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of Virgil Fox. It gives me great pleasure to post several of the pieces I was privileged to study with him over the 10 years I spent as his student. In the spirit of 'honoring the master', I submit these performances in a style similar to his. They contain the essence of what he taught me about music in general and organ playing in particular.

In my youth I was often dismissively accused of being a carbon copy of Fox, but the fact is that I sought to study with him because I identified with his approach more than others that were accessible to me. Each of us gets music a little differently and that diversity keeps life interesting.

I owe Virgil Fox much. He turned my early interest in the organ into a passion for playing them and his touring organ sowed the seed for the eventual founding of Marshall & Ogletree. We all have heroes and he is certainly one of mine. Go Virgil!

  • Bach: Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565

    9:27

    Posibly my favourite Bach composition.

The Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565, is a piece of organ music composed by Johann Sebastian Bach sometime between 1703 and 1707. It is one of the most famous works in the organ repertoire, and has been used in a variety of popular media ranging from film, to video games, to rock music, and ringtones.

As indicated by the accepted title of the piece, the Toccata and Fugue is scored in D minor. It is not in dorian mode as the key signature supposes, as it was common practice in the Baroque period to write in leading tone accidentals rather than in the key signature. It begins with a single-voice flourish in the upper ranges of the keyboard, doubled at the octave. It then spirals toward the bottom, where a diminished seventh chord appears, built one note at a time. This resolves into a D major chord, taken from the parallel major mode.

The subject of the four-voice fugue is made up entirely of sixteenth notes, with an implied pedal point set against a brief melodic subject that first falls, then rises. The second entry starts in the sub-dominant key rather than the dominant key. Although unusual for a Bach fugue, this is a real answer and is appropriate following a subject that progresses from V to I and then to V below I by a leap. A straightforward dominant answer would sound atonal and odd in a Baroque piece.

After the final entry of the fugal melody, the composition resolves to the key's corresponding major, B-flat, that is held. From there, a coda is played as a cadenza much like the Toccata itself, resolving to a series of chords followed by arpeggios that progress to other paired chords, each a little lower than the one preceding, leading to the signature finale that is as recognizable as the Toccata's introduction.

  • Bach-Stokowski: Toccata & Fugue in D minor - Sir Andrew Davis conducts

    10:49

Leopold Stokowski's orchestral transcription of Bach's Toccata and Fugue for organ is probably the most famous of all Bach arrangements. It was splendidly played at the First Night of the 2000 Proms in London's Royal Albert Hall by the BBCSO. For this performance, Sir Andrew Davis followed in Stokowski's footsteps by conducting without a baton. As will be seen, he clearly enjoyed the experience!
