David Sherrington was born in Godalming, England and began playing the clarinet aged twelve.  Within two years he was playing in semi-pro jazz bands and was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London.  In his late teens, he switched to the tenor saxophone and began his career as a professional musician and arranger, working with singer/songwriter Phillip Goodhand-Tait, the rock'n'roll legend Larry Williams and Johnny “Guitar” Watson.  He has also worked with Sir Tim Smit (the Dutch-born founder of The Eden Project) on the Louise Tucker album, Midnight Blue, Andy Latimer (Camel) and has been an arranger and performer with various American R'n'B artistes including Lou Pride and Charles Walker.
David has also written a great number of television and radio jingles and music for theatre productions including Cyrano de Bergerac and  All My Sons. He was also the musical director for the actress, Sarah Miles, (Ryan's Daughter, The Servant, Blow-Up) on her album and stage show, The Widow Smiles. In 1992, He wrote and directed the film, The Light That Never Goes Out, the story of the life and work of Doctor Edward Bach, the originator of the now world-famous Bach Flower Remedies.
In addition to his musical career, David also gained an honours degree in history and has worked as a lecturer in higher education.  His highly acclaimed first book, the satire, Age of Bewilderment, was published in 2012 and a sequel, Barking at Squirrels, will be published in 2015. He continues to work as a session musician, performer and arranger.

  • Will the Circle Be Unbroken

    4:35

This is from the BBC's Transatlantic Sessions. The 3 singers are Michelle Wright, Iris DeMent, and Mairead Ni Mhaonaight . This BBC series was my introduction to Iris DeMent and I have become a big fan. Mairead Ni Mhaonaight is really most known as an Irish fiddle player but she has the face and voice of an angel.

I was standing by my window,
On a cold and cloudy day
When I saw the hearse come rolling
For to carry my mother away

    Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
    There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky

    Lord I told that undertaker
    Undertaker please drive slow
For that body you are hauling
Lord, I hate to see her go

Oh, I followed close behind her
Tried to hold up and be brave
But I could not hide my sorrow
When they laid her in the grave

    Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
    There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky

I was born down, in the valley
Where the sun refused to shine
But I'm climbing up to the highlands
    Gonna make that mountain mine.

    Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
    There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky

    Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
    There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky

    There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky

    Notes:
Accidentally Born In New Orleans was released in Germany in December 1972, followed 6 months later on the Transatlantic label in the UK - 'accidentally' issued with the title Accidentally Borne In New Orleans in America.

The 'accidental' of the title is effectively how Snape was formed, during a USA tour of collective bands, including Humble Pie & King Crimson. Thus the band is also known as The Accidental Band.

    About This Release:

In the world of electronic music, classically-trained composer and producer Culprit 1 stands apart from his contemporaries. His album 'Theme 2' is a shimmering sonic kaleidoscope featuring a wealth of unorthodox sounds, from Iranian santoors and obscure Italian synths to fierce beats and shuddering basslines. Referencing minimalist innovators such as Steve Reich and Terry Riley with a respectful nod to producers such as Four Tet and Rodney Jerkins, Culprit 1's eclectic and unique approach to music is like twisting a radio dial and hearing a random stream of sound that somehow makes sense. Classical strings caress the spoken word, intricate beats underpin 70s bleeps and seductive sequences sing out through the speakers.

'Theme 2' the second album of Culprit 1's career, is impressively playful and diverse.
I doubt I'll ever tell anyone what it's really about says Culprit 1, refreshingly free of the need for self analysis. As the great Ernest Hemingway said of the characters in 'The Old Man and the Sea'; ...;if I made them good andrue enough, they would mean many things. 'Theme 2' follows on from his critically- acclaimed debut album 'Running in Order' and features 12 vibrant genre-defying pieces, 5 of which feature electrifying contributions by guest performers. South London rapper Smiler contributes his lyrical bite and latent swagger to 'Distraction' and 'Motion', the angelically-voiced Iko gets both poppy and ethereal on 'Breathing In Unison' and 'Juhyo' and spoken word artist Polarbear is transcendental on the moving 'Space Between'.

Fact Magazine heralded the grand string arrangements of Culprit 1's debut album and the new LP continues the tradition of working with gifted instrumentalists in the studio. Foregoing the use of samples, all strings on the album were recorded by the talented quartet with which Culprit 1 performs live. Culprit 1 was trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama conservatoire in his native Wales, where he met live violinist Joanne Buckland. Together, they wrote the new LP's opening mantra 'Strings Intro', based around four
densely-layered and slow-moving chords. Little wonder that eminent Welsh composer John Hardy asked Culprit 1 to remix his latest recording with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Throughout 2010, Culprit 1 has been performing with the Bryden Strings (whose members have played with everyone from Kanye West to the Welsh National Opera) Anyone lucky enough to be at any of these live events could not have failed to notice the magical way in which Culprit 1 merges cutting edge electronics with live orchestral instrumentation. In
a sample and synthesis- heavy musical culture it is often easy to over look groundbreaking new electronic music. 'Theme 2' is a glorious and ambitious piece of work, which beautifully showcases one of the UK's most outstanding, fearless and imaginative musical minds.

  • The Sally Gardens, by Benjamin Britten

    2:26

A performance of the Benjamin Britten's folk song arrangement The Sally Gardens at an open-to-the-public concert at the Kenwood Willis Music Steinway Piano Gallery on 7/30/2014 in Cincinnati, OH.
Benjamin Britten’s Folksong Arrangements, begun as manifestation of his homesickness during his exile in the United States in the early 1940s, grew over the course of his career into an eight-volume compendium of British, Irish, Welsh, Scottish, and French folk music. From these I have selected three of his idiosyncratic, yet stylistically-appropriate arrangements, each one addressing situations of love, loss, and memory. In The Sally Gardens, a forlorn lover looks back upon a time when he took for granted the opportunity for love; in O Waly, Waly (also called “The Water Is Wide”), a jilted lover both laments the agonies of a betrayal clearly remembered and, with bitter irony, attempts to dismiss the passing fancies of love; and finally, in The Ash Grove, a lover memorializes the titular site as both the place where he found love and where his lover has come to rest in death. While the lyrics themselves are full of mournful twinges, the simple, memorable melodies give a sweetness to these emblems of British song.
