    Lyrics :
Somewhere in the world there is a father and a mother
And the father is a son who has a mother
The mother has a daughter who gets married to the brother of a mother
And they all just tryna multiply with one another

'Cause that's just the way of the world
It never ends till the end then you start again
That's just the way of the world
That's just the way of the world

Somewhere in the world they think they're working for themselves
They get up everyday to go to work for someone else
And somebody works for them and so they think they got it made
But they're all just working to get paid the very same

And so they keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum
They gonna keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum-dum
And so they keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum
They gonna keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum-dum

Somewhere in the world you got a robber and a bank
And the bank robbed the people so the people robbed the bank
And the police came to get him but they let him get away
'Cause they're all just working to get paid the very same

'Cause that's just the way of the world
It never ends till the end then you start again
That's just the way of the world
That's just the way of the world

And so they keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum
They gonna keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum-dum
And so they keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum
They gonna keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum-dum

Don't believe everything that you hear
Let it go through your left and right ear
Don't just march to the beat of that drum
Don't be one of them people just twiddling them thumbs

'Cause that's just the way of the world
It never ends till the end and then you start again
That's just the way of the world
That's just the way of the world

And so they keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum
They gonna keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum-dum
And so they keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum
They gonna keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum-dum

And so they keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum
They gonna keep on twiddling them thumbs
    Skiddly-dee-da-dum-dum

  • The Rolling Stones - Under My Thumb

    3:25

Under My Thumb by The Rolling Stones
    Producers: Andrew Loog Oldham
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Lyricists: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Associated Performers: Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, and Ian Stewart

    Lyrics:

Under my thumb, the girl who once had me down
Under my thumb, the girl who once pushed me around

    It’s down to me
The difference in the clothes she wears
Down to me, the change has come, she’s under my thumb

    Ain’t it the truth, babe?

Under my thumb, is a squirmin’ dog who’s just had her day
Under my thumb, a girl who has just changed her ways

It’s down to me, yes, it is,
The way she does just what she’s told
Down to me, the change has come, she’s under my thumb

    Ah, Ah, say it’s alright

Under my thumb, is a Siamese cat of a girl
Under my thumb, she’s the sweetest, hmmm, pet in the world

    It’s down to me
The way she talks when she’s spoken to
Down to me, the change has come, she’s under my thumb

Ah, oh, take it easy babe
    Yeah

    Under my thumb
Her eyes are just kept to herself
    Under my thumb, well, I,
I can still look at someone else

It’s down to me, oh, that’s what I said,
The way she talks when she’s spoken to
Down to me, the change has come,
    She’s under my thumb
    Say, it’s alright

► I can help you to solve any pianistic or musical problem.

► You must be aware that the expression “avoid thumb under” does not mean that the thumb should be still or stiff and never cross the other fingers. It means that, when playing scales or runs, the thumb should gradually approach its next position and the point is that you MUST NOT PLAY LEGATO between the thumb and 3rd or 4th fingers. Instead, your hand should make a very little and inaudible jump when changing the horizontal position on the keyboard.

    ► Comment by Rudel23 (from 2018.12.19):
«I was a very good friend of Gyorgy Sandor, and this is exactly the technique he wanted and used for thumb passage».

► Comment by Uriah Peep (from 2018.11.26):
«You are actually (right-hand example) pushing the right hand up the keyboard imperceptibly at the point SO THAT the thumb will take over the next series of keys and LANDS ON the next key coming up by this hand motion. This little movement takes away the thumb under to a hand motion upward so that the thumb is doing a much less under movement than before. I came to this concept naturally in my practice by merely keeping the hand in a straight line (perpendicular to the keyboard). And as you say, it makes for economic use of hand motion thereby reducing the energy output.»

Hey friends! Here's a tip & technique video, with a companion PDF chord sheet, showing you how to approach the F-major chord with a wrapped thumb on the low E string. Specifically, I'll be talking about how this technique is helpful when playing fingerstyle - when you'll often want your left pinky free to add flourish notes on the thinnest couple strings. I'll walk you through the technique, starting simple and guiding you through the process. I'll even show you a few practice exercises to put this technique through the paces. I hope you enjoy!

In this video we are going to be looking at establishing the perfect right hand technique when playing the guitar. We will cover the Right hand thumb (pulgar) techniques.

This technique will prove to be the building blocks on which to base all of your guitar playing for the future. It will ensure a good tone and secure placement of the fingers on the strings and help those of you who are just starting out and others who are looking to improve those flaws in your existing techniques.

This video is part of a series of tutorials on the most essential techniques in learning to play the guitar.
With over 30 years of experience, I have decided to compile all the most important techniques into individual video lessons.

I will help guide you through every step of the way, giving you the advice that was passed on to me by my tutors, and that I have discovered works best in over 30 years of teaching all age groups.

    The subjects we will cover include;

    An Introduction #1

    • Sitting Position and posture #2

    • Left hand technique #3

    • Left hand exercises #4

    • Right hand technique #5

    • Right hand exercises #6

    • Right hand exercises #7

Each video will be concise and cover just the important information that will allow you to follow me step by step, and ultimately retain the information to ensure a secure technical foundation on which to build your guitar experiences.

If you are looking to buy a guitar then please do check out my videos on “A beginners guide to buying the right guitar for you.”

And “How to check a guitar before buying.”

I don’t expect all of my students to want to become professional musicians, but I do love hearing from past students who tell me that they still play their guitars nearly every day, either to destress, to their kids, at parties, or just for the sheer pleasure of it!

Surely that’s what it’s all about?

So, come on, leap in and let me help you on your journey to learning to play the guitar.

Lesson of the Week from This is Classical Guitar.
Left hand thumb position for classical guitar.
This is a question from Paul who wanted to know about the left hand thumb position while playing scales. I've expanded on it to discuss the left thumb in general.

Here's the original question: I would like to know how the left hand thumb performs on the back of the neck of the guitar while playing scales. Does it traverse across the neck while fingers maintain their same curvature or is it static while the fingers curl more tightly & the wrist drops more so as to remain straight? All lessons that I can find only show the fingers in action from a front perspective.

  • Thumb Barre Chords - How and Why - Jimi Hendrix, John Frusciante, John Mayer Rhythm Guitar Tutorial

    15:55

New Guitar Tutorials every Monday, subscribe and learn.

Have you ever noticed that Jimi Hendrix, John Frusciante and John Mayer use their thumb over the top of the fretboard to play their barre chords, eliminating the barre entirely? If you have, have you ever asked why? Today we are going to cover both the HOW and WHY so you can shred out like your favorite guitar legends.

The reason they do this is because the hand actually sits in the pentatonic scale like this, so you can blend the chords and the scale seamlessly, creating beautiful licks, fills and melodies that blend with the chords to make amazingly unique rhythmic ideas.

Soul, R&B, Rock, Blues, Fusion, Alternative, these ideas can be used in a variety of different styles, just listen to Jimi Hendrix, John Frusciante, John Mayer and Stevie Ray Vaughn to hear the variety of styles that use these particular tactic.

  • 5 Interesting Ways to Solve Drumming THUMB PAIN...

    8:02

The obvious cause of thumb pain while playing drums is squeezing the sticks too tight. But what causes us to squeeze the sticks too tight? What can we do to avoid clamping down and compromising our technique? I take a look at some different causes of joint pain in the hand and find some possible solutions to this painful problem. We take a look at surface level issues (our skin), then delve into some deeper muscular/joint issues that could be a result of not-so-great technique. I hope something here helps YOU get rid of any pain in your thumbs. The last thing we drummers need to deal with while playing is any kind of muscle or joint pain. We wrap up the discussion with some thoughts on “relaxed playing” - keeping your shoulders and wrists nice and loose, no matter how loud or fast you’re playing.

If you like what you’ve seen, I hope you’ll SUBSCRIBE! This channel is all about helping YOU become a better drummer, one week at a time, so you can impact your audience and the musicians you play with.

  • How to Play Guitar Chords with your Thumb | Guitar Tricks

    4:56

Stop waiting and finally learn how to play guitar today:
Guitar players sometimes play barre chords with their thumb. They play the bass note with their thumb, which gives them the option to fill in the rhythm with other embellishments. Jimi Hendrix used this technique quite a bit and in this lesson, Anders Mouridsen is going to show you how to play guitar chords with your thumb. This is called thumb voicings.

It may be difficult at first but, what you want to focus on is to hold down a bass note with your thumb. Almost anyone can reach up over the neck and grab the bass note with their thumb. Once you get that, you want to try and get comfortable by playing a few strums and rhythms.

Once you're comfortable strumming while your thumb is on a bass note, let go of the bass note, and play with only your treble fingers, your 1, 2, 3, and fourth finger. Once you get used to play chords with just your treble fingers, try and switch back and forth between the bass note and chord.

When you're real comfortable with the thumb voicings and the chord, you can add little Hendrix-style fills as well! With enough practice, you'll be able to hold these chords comfortably and you'll be surprised at how fun and great sounding this technique is.

  • Cello bow thumb placement

    5:38

In this video I explain where to place the thumb on the bow to allow free movement of the fingers, hand and wrist.

To answer some of your questions:

Holding a cello bow vertically is one thing but letting the thumb counterbalance the weight of the fingers, hand and arm while moving on the string is more complex. To begin though, you must learn how to make a bow hold and it is important to find a positioning of the thumb, where it can be flexible- where the joints can move. He must understand that the bow hold is not something that stays the same throughout the bow stroke. The best thing I can advise, once you have found where to place your thumb, is to keep re-making your bow hold because slipping is going to continually happen as you flex your fingers or try to play on the strings. If after weeks of calmly repeated attempts, your thumb still slips, try a different thumb or finger placement from what I suggest.

Also when I say that the thumb presses against the bow, I really mean that it counterbalances it. Never squeeze!
