  • Why Rick Beato is Wrong About Perfect Pitch

    44:07

A scientist's response to Rick Beato's video Why Adults Can't Develop Perfect Pitch.

I am a professional Jazz Musician, a Lecturer at Middlesex University, an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, and a Music Psychology PhD student at the University of Cambridge (where I am studying Absolute (i.e., 'Perfect') Pitch).

No animosity is intended towards Rick Beato in creating this video. Its function is to add something useful to the public understanding of Absolute Pitch (which is the topic of my PhD).

    Comments:
    • I'm aware I pronounce 'Wernicke's area' strangely
    • The Bachem statistic is actually from 1955, not 1954 (as I say in the video)

Narcissistic and psychopathic abuse contributes to the serious and debilitating condition of C-PTSD. Persistent malicious gaslighting and bullying can add to any existing trauma stored by the body, causing mind, body and soul to suffer. • Reza Ziai - Evolutionary Psychology , Lecture: 09/13/2018

    1:40:37

Although I expressly said I was not going to ever share these audio lectures, a number of people have expressed enough interest and after consulting with a few colleagues, I decided to post these lectures (which include some of the power point slides I used) to YouTube. This was the first lecture I decided to record and unfortunately missed the first two weeks of the semester, so some introductory content is missing. There's some house cleaning in the first 16 minutes or so where I go into some issues of free speech and its effect on science communication. Topics covered: The Blank Slate, ghost in the machine, noble savage, W.D. Hamilton, inclusive fitness, G.C. Williams, E.O. Wilson, misconceptions of the field of evolutionary psychology, how radical behaviorism is blank slate theory, and a few other topics. The microphone was just from my lap top, so the questions and comments from students are sometimes difficult to hear. My apologies. I hope to somehow fix that issue in the future when I release the next lecture in the semester.
    Thank you,
    Reza

  • How Men and Women Are Not Exactly the Same and Why It Doesnt Matter - Music and the Meaning of Life

    48:08

In this highly anticipated Episode 3 of Music and the Meaning of Life, I take on one of the most controversial topics of today: sex and gender! I explore topics such as sex differences, judging others based on gender, complementarianism, egalitarianism, epistemology, sexual dimorphism in other species, evolution, religion and religious views of gender, social justice, feminism, sexism, and how men and women can better connect going forward. This is only my third podcast and by far my longest, so please bear with me as I improve the technical aspects (although the sound is far superior in this episode!) The time is Now! Founded by guitarist, songwriter, and NYC rock club veteran Allen Childs, Now is a thought-provoking rock trio that blends pure and simple earworm-pop goodness with free-form, extended jams in the style of Led Zeppelin and Phish.

A native Alabamian, Childs moved to New York City to study at Columbia University, where he graduated in 2009 with a degree in philosophy (a clear influence on his songwriting). Next came The Collective School of Music, where he further befriended his fretboard and met mathematician-turned-bassist Anton Serrats and drummer Kaveh Haghtalab, each of whom brings to the project jazz school chops and all the groove audiences can handle.

No subject is off limits in Now’s catalog; inspired by The Beatles’ playfulness and the spiritual bombast of The Who, popular Now tracks explore the definition of masculinity, free will vs. determinism, and menstruation. These unflinching lyrical inquiries combine with powerful improvised crescendos and infectious hooks to form a musical experience that leaves a mark.

“It is, for that matter, self-evident that if one community decides in one fashion, another, also sovereign, in the opposite fashion, both cannot be right. Reasoning men have also protested, and justly, against the conception that what a majority in numbers, or even (what is more compelling still) a unanimity of decision in a community may order, may not only be wrong but may be something which that community has no authority to order since, though it possesses a civil and temporal authority, it acts against that ultimate authority which is its own consciousness of right. Men may and do justly protest against the doctrine that a community is incapable of doing deliberate evil; it is as capable of such an action as is an individual. But men nowhere do or can deny that the community acting as it thinks right is ultimately sovereign: there is no alternative to so plain a truth.” - Hilaire Belloc

  • Why cutting ANY childs genitals is wrong: female, male, or intersex

    51:07

... and why anti-FGM campaigns are at risk of losing ground in the fight for children's rights.

Recent court cases in England and the United States have highlighted a paradox in the current legal treatment of female, male, and intersex children with respect to the protections they are afforded against medically unnecessary genital cutting. In particular, there are legally prohibited forms of female genital cutting (such as the so-called ritual 'nick') that are less invasive or risky than permitted forms of male and intersex genital cutting, creating a collision course for law and policy in the immediate future.

Attempts to quarantine male versus female forms of genital cutting (MGC, FGC) based on appeals to supposedly different parental intentions (regarding, e.g., sexual control) or the religious versus cultural status of the cutting have been undermined by recent scholarship. This scholarship shows that there is far more overlap, both physically and symbolically, between male, female, and intersex genital cutting than has traditionally been assumed, when the full spectrum of each type of cutting across cultures is considered and like cases compared with like. Recognizing that a zero tolerance policy toward FGC may lead to restrictions on ritual male circumcision, defenders of the latter practice have begun to argue that purportedly minor forms of female genital cutting should be considered morally acceptable and should be legally tolerated. This trend in the literature has emboldened proponents of female circumcision, who are now basing their defence of the practice on Western tolerance and even promotion of MGC and intersex cutting, citing problematic (e.g., racialized) double standards. Some have even raised the prospect of health benefits for so-called minor forms of FGC, since this approach has apparently proved successful in countering ethical objections toward even more invasive forms of MGC.

In this talk, I argue that efforts to eliminate female genital cutting will only be successful in the long run if they are divorced from contestable empirical claims concerning health risks, which (1) apply mostly to the 'extreme' forms of the practice and (2) may only lead to the medicalization of FGC (or a transition to its less invasive forms). Instead, they should be tied to a sex and gender-neutral (that is, human) right to genital autonomy and bodily integrity as applied to children.

Brian is Associate Director of the Yale-Hastings Program in Ethics and Health Policy at Yale University and The Hastings Center Bioethics Research Institute, and a Research Fellow in the Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford. With degrees from Yale, Oxford, and Cambridge universities, his work is cross-disciplinary, following training in gender and sexuality, philosophy, psychology, history and sociology of science and medicine, and ethics. His research been cited in the U.S. President’s Commission on Bioethics and in a landmark British high court case concerning Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by Sir James Munby (in the matter of B and G). In 2016, he was invited by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences to serve as one of a small group of “high-level experts” reporting to the Dutch government on research methods and quality control in science and medicine; he later served as a peer reviewer on the final report. He was also invited to submit materials based on his work on female and male genital cutting to a special committee of the European Parliament; this work has now been published as part of a monograph series produced by the same. Other scholarly highlights include serving as Guest Editor of the Journal of Medical Ethics for a special issue on circumcision; serving as Guest Editor for the Medical Law Review for a special issue on regulating sexual boundaries; authoring a forthcoming book on male, female, and intersex genital cutting for Chicago University Press; and publishing more than 20 peer-reviewed essays or book chapters on the science and ethics of childhood genital cutting, including an in-depth analysis of the 2008 WHO/UN policy on FGM in the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal, whose editor devoted a special issue to the article, with invited responses from leading experts. Brian currently serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Medical Ethics, Associate Editor for the Yale Journal of Law & Humanities, Ethics Editor for the Journal of Clinical and Translational Research, and sits on the Board of Editorial Consultants for Public Affairs Quarterly.

    Lyrics:
    Eyes made from The Light
Decide to join us back in Earth
    While mankind is passing
    Through the Valley of Death
    Immortal souls arrive
To guide us off this foul life
    Lead us into glory
    For centuries ahead

    Rising with his own sword
    An unyielding warrior
He will see all of us
    Through spiritual squalor
    In his mind Ideals
    His heart a live fire
    With a crashing thunder
    He receives his mission

He stands high holding a flag
    With a strong red hand

    Fate plays strange games
To test a mystic's inner light
But he who makes us proud
    Has defeated his self
    He's not like the others
Who all are mad for power
    Power is nothing
    If you're working for yourself

    Fighting with the old world
    In unequal struggle
    But true leaders can make
    The unlikely happen
    He knows that's his mission
    To upgrade all mankind
And if it's war it takes
Flesh and bone we will grind

    You have seen immortals
    Changing life for mankind
And if there is still hope
    It's because of all them
    Now you have your mission
    Read their words and follow
    Do it and you'll prosper
    Or remain a dead man

He stands high holding a flag
    With a strong red hand
    Through war values will shine
    Here, now, we conquer!

    The whole world United
An Eagle flies in the Sun!

  • From Systems Thinking to Systems Practice: Embracing Uncertainty & Unpredictability

    1:24:18

This webinar with Daniel Christian Wahl was hosted by Deeanna Burleson, Ph.D. in the ‘Topics in the field of systems science’ series intended as a contribution to the International Society for Systems Science.

It starts with a 45 minute presentation of Dr. Wahl's reflections on nearly 20 years of experience in trying to apply whole systems thinking to the field of design for sustainability and more recently regenerative development practice.

He explores the limitations of a quantity focussed science and the need for a new 'science of qualities'. Daniel also mentions how the work and thinking of Donella Meadows evolved from 'leverage points 1.0' to 'leverage points 2.0' and on to 'Dancing with systems. Nora Bateson's 'warm data' approach is mentioned as a related example of this relationships and qualities focussed work with systems from the inside. Katia Laszlo's framing from 'systems thinking to systems being' is also addressed.

Daniel briefly explores some of the most common mistakes made in intervening in complex adaptive systems and highlight the need for embracing the fundamental unpredictability of such systems as we move from being detached observers to being engaged participants of such systems.

To ground these theoretical considerations and paradigmatic shifts in a practical example, Daniel offers his work for Gaia Education on the 'SDG Flashcards', the 'SDG Project Canvas', the 'SDG Training of Multipliers' and the 'Multipliers Handbook' as an example of 'designing for positive emergence' and Bucky's advice that to change the way people think, don't tell them what to think, give them a tool the use of which will change the way they think. The flashcards by Gaia Education and UNESCO have been used successfully on 5 continents and translated into 6 languages.

... after the presentation there is another 45 minuter conversation or Q&A session that addresses a wide range of topics related to 'Designing Regenerative Culture' ... enjoy and share!

  • The Delirious Momentum of the Revolt - AudioZine

    1:43:41

This zine is collects writings by A.G. Schwarz (it’s billed as “the complete works”). The writings are among the best of the insurrectionary writings that came out in the early 2010s in the United States, with essays covering “The Logic of Not Demanding”, the Greek insurrection in 2008 and lessons that can be learned from it, and discussions of various attempts to try insurrectionary approaches in the United States. The essays are very thought provoking and offer a wealth of valuable insights, especially for those who have been inspired by the courage of anarchists in Greece. Order a hard copy of the zine here from Sprout Distro.

If a rebellion does not communicate demands, it is not because it is senseless, but on the contrary because it is intelligent. And if the people think that it is senseless, this is only because we have not succeeded in challenging the narrator role usurped by the media, we have not distributed enough counterinformation to contradict their lies.

As kicks evolve and melody remains, this return to form is what defines the Promo sound. Music without limitations. Getting your freak on in the studio, on the dancefloor, wherever! As long as the bass drums are hard and the sound is pure. Like a crypto currency that increases in value every kick of the drum, Authentic just keeps on growing. From the first sounds of `The sheep dog' to the high tempo madness that is `Vergif', this ultra combo of a release get things going. Promo knows his way around the keys and it shows. From dancing deep in the dark abyss to reaching high in the sky for pure enlightenment, Authentic delivers the goods. Special mention goes out to Ophidian and Myrean who co-produced / are featured in `Born to break', a subtle composition that will take you by storm.

Packing the prism of sound that is Authentic, hardcore is in for a treat. Big kicks, distorted experiments and killer melody to crank your speakers. The impact is Authentic! So fold your bills, get ready and best of all: play it loud!

  • Ernie Payne - Curse of Hamm

    4:21

Ernie Payne (April 13, 1945) was an African American musician from Louisiana's Acadia Parish. His family was large and everyone learnt early to pitch in and help with chores and household duties. Their strict, religious, hard - working ethic thought 'music' essential to a quality life, but hardly something to persue as a way to earn a living.

Over the years Ernie has been employed as a songwriter for various publishers, front man for numerous musical entities, co-front man, civil servant, husband (one wife), father (of two). Somebody singing is my first memory. Music celebrated and music mourned. Everybody in my family loved some kind of music and they shared it with me. My music attempts to carry on that idea of brotherhood and sharing.

Roots orientated, delta blues. comtemporary folk artist Ernie Payne is probably one of the most comfortable players you will ever hear. Trading of easily between guitar and dobro, his command of the various rhythms and instruments is impressive.

At the core of almost every song are Payne's vocals which are extremely strong, yet soothing. He can sing songs that tear at your heart, nailing the feel of each tune so well, that you instantly know the meaning, without knowing the words. The stories told in the songs are intimate and visual and as he is singing he makes the listener feel as if he is talking to them personally, directly and one on one.

Ernie's debut CD (Coercion Street) was released on Black and Tan Records in April 2004. The record is being played all over the world and was picked up by Andy Kershaw (BBC Radio 3). It got rave reviews in among other BLUES WAX and BLUES REVUE.

During his first european tour in August/ September 2004 Ernie visited Holland, France, Ireland, Belgium and the UK, where he did a recording session for Andy Kershaw Show. He will come back to Europe in April / May 2005

Here is Ernie's Bio in his own words:
I was born in Louisiana, U.S.A. Raised in Evangeline Parish and East Texas. Late blooming baby boomer, nurtured by god-fearing baptists and creole catholics and the powerful fun of the second line drum. I'm trying to serve the blackness well.
