  • SOUSA Triumph of Time - The Presidents Own United States Marine Band

    2:29

The President's Own United States Marine Band presents The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa, a multi-year project to record and publish scores for all of Sousa's Marches. Sousa, known as The March King, was director of the Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. Recording directed by Lieutenant Col. Jason K. Fettig.

Since Sousa did not discuss this march in any of his writings, the origin of the title must be left to speculation. Although the music was copyrighted in six different years, Time did indeed triumph over it–it was never popular.

Paul E. Bierley, The Works of John Philip Sousa (Westerville, Ohio: Integrity Press, 1984), 91. Used by permission.

A companion piece to “Mother Goose,” this medley march was also based on nursery rhymes. Included are “Three Blind Mice,” “Thus the Farmer Sows His Seed,” “Old Mother Hubbard,” “Hey Diddle Diddle,” “Little Redbird in the Tree,” “London Bridge Is Falling Down,” and “The Minstrel Boy.”

Triumph of Time, for orchestra (1972)

    Pierre Boulez

Denying temporal succession, denying the self...are apparent desperations and secret consolations. Our destiny...is not frightful by being unreal. It is frightful because it is irreversible and iron-clad. Time is the substance I am made of. -- Borges

Harrison Birtwistle's music is faithfully assigned a star with a specific constellation of artists -- composers Stravinsky and Messiaen, painter Paul Klee, and poet Paul Celan. But somewhere in the as-yet-uncharted sky there must be a configuration connecting Birtwistle with Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, monument to a mutually ardent and productive obsession with time. Between the two creators, one could collect a temporal thesaurus: linear time, circular time, time become space; time as stasis in progress, the searching tunnel-time of the labyrinth, the looping time of reincarnation and the timeless time of stone monoliths and circular ruins. But behind these cooler concentrations, both Birtwistle and Borges also cultivate a kind of tragic time -- time with a ghastly, disillusioning face, revealing itself to anyone who dares to reverse the impossible flow, cracking the spine of human resolve under its undeviating wheel.

Birtwistle wrote one of his most famous pieces, The Triumph of Time, in 1972; at the time he spoke of his inspiration through a Brueghel etching, whose allegorical scene -- Time, with Death and Fame in tow, crushing under cart the ground-strewn detritus of human ages -- gave Birtwistle both model and title. But I'd like to think that some Borgesian stellar figure also swept composer towards theme. Cosmic or terrestrial, Birtwistle's The Triumph of Time is still one of his most disturbing pieces, a vast adagio of Mahlerian compass and inexorable tread. A single half-hour movement, The Triumph of Time is vessel for some of Birtwistle's then nascent temporal fascinations -- with revolving music, with music as a physical object, with musical layers and layering.

Birtwistle also commits one of his most characteristic tropes in The Triumph of Time: he mutates a spatial image (in this case, Brueghel's dreadful scene) into a sequence of temporal events. A vision which would otherwise strike now unfolds with slow and heavy inertia; likewise, the eye's global perspective now morphs into the ear's global blindness, receiving the aural image only bar by bar, second by second -- or as Birtwistle himself wrote, a (necessarily) linked chain of material objects that have no necessary connexion with each other. Among the two most essential objects are a folk-like melody on cor anglais and another, colder theme on amplified soprano saxophone. Both themes persist like ciphers, the cor anglais symbolic of subjective time (psychology, memory, nostalgia) and the saxophone of objective time, of the utter irreversibility of the real annihilating all mere appearances.

The work moves through two vast and harrowing waves, the second, with its gigantic percussion battery, laying rich waste to the musical landscape. And while Birtwistle's score may take its gnarled plot from Brueghel, its inimitable emotional complex mirrors Borges' famous conclusion, With relief, with humiliation, with terror, he understood that he too was a mere appearance.
