Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now was released as a single before being included on the compilation album Hatful of Hollow.

    Lyrics

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
    In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
    In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
What she asked of me at the end of the day
    Caligula would have blushed
Oh, you've been in the house too long she said
    And I naturally fled
    In my life
    Why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
Oh, you've been in the house too long she said
    And I naturally fled
    In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?

This Charming Man was released as the group's second single in October 1983.
The single was re-issued in 1992, reaching number 8 on the UK singles chart. Mojo magazine journalists placed the track at number one on their 2008 50 Greatest UK Indie Records of All Time feature.

    Lyrics

    Punctured bicycle
    On a hillside desolate
Will nature make a man of me yet?
    When in this charming car
    This charming man
    Why pamper life's complexity
    When the leather runs smooth
    On the passenger's seat?
    I would go out tonight
But I haven't got a stitch to wear
    This man said it's gruesome
That someone so handsome should care
    Ah ! A jumped-up pantry boy
    Who never knew his place
    He said return the ring
He knows so much about these things
He knows so much about these things
    I would go out tonight
But I haven't got a stitch to wear
    This man said it's gruesome
That someone so handsome should care
    La, la-la, la-la, la-la, this charming man
    Oh, la-la, la-la, la-la, this charming man
    Ah ! A jumped-up pantry boy
    Who never knew his place
    He said return the ring

Girlfriend In A Coma was released in August 1987 and is taken from the album Strangeways, Here We Come.

    Lyrics

Girlfriend in a coma, I know
    I know, it's serious
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
    I know, it's really serious
There were times when I could
    Have murdered her
But you know, I would hate
    Anything to happen to her
No, I don't want to see her
    Do you really think
    She'll pull through
    Do you really think
    She'll pull through
    Do
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
    I know, it's serious
My, my, my, my, my, my baby, goodbye
There were times when I could
    Have strangled her
But you know, I would hate
    Anything to happen to her
    Would you please
    Let me see her
    Do you really think
    She'll pull through
    Do you really think
    She'll pull through
    Do
Let me whisper my last goodbyes
    I know, it's serious

Panic was released as a single in 1986 & was the first recording to feature new member Craig Gannon. It was later released on the compilation albums The World Won't Listen and Louder Than Bombs.

    Lyrics

Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
    I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again?
The leeds side-streets that you slip down
    I wonder to myself
Hopes may rise on the grasmere
But honey pie, you're not safe here
    So you run down
To the safety of the town
But there's panic on the streets of Carlisle
    Dublin, Dundee, Humberside
    I wonder to myself
    Burn down the disco
    Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music that they constantly play
It says nothing to me about my life
    Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music they constantly play
On the Leeds side-streets that you slip down
The provincial towns you jog 'round
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ

The Boy with the Thorn in His Side is taken from The Smiths' third album The Queen Is Dead but was released as a single (albeit in a different mix) several months before, reaching no. 23 in the UK Singles Chart in autumn 1985. This was the first single by The Smiths to be accompanied by a promotional video, something the band had previously resisted. The Smiths also performed this song on an episode of the British television programme Top of the Pops.

    Lyrics

The boy with the thorn in his side
    Behind the hatred there lies
    A murderous desire for love
How can they look into my eyes
And still they don't believe me?
How can they hear me say those words
    Still they don't believe me?
And if they don't believe me now
    Will they ever believe me?
And if they don't believe me now
Will they ever, they ever, believe me?
    Oh
The boy with the thorn in his side
    Behind the hatred there lies
    A plundering desire for love
How can they see the Love in our eyes
And still they don't believe us?
    And after all this time
They don't want to believe us
And if they don't believe us now
    Will they ever believe us?
And when you want to live
    How do you start?
    Where do you go?
Who do you need to know?
    Oh
    Oh no
    Oh

What Difference Does It Make? was released in 1984. The single version is taken from band's self-titled debut album The Smiths. A different version recorded for the John Peel Show on BBC Radio One is featured on the compilation album Hatful of Hollow.

    Lyrics

All men have secrets and here is mine
    So let it be known
For we have been through hell and high tide
I think I can rely on you...
And yet you start to recoil
Heavy words are so lightly thrown
But still I'd leap in front of a flying bullet for you
So, what difference does it make?
So, what difference does it make?
    It makes none
    But now you have gone
And you must be looking very old tonight
The devil will find work for idle hands to do
I stole and I lied, and why?
    Because you asked me to!
But now you make me feel so ashamed
Because I've only got two hands
Well, I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh
So, what difference does it make?
Oh, what difference does it make?
    Oh, it makes none
    But now you have gone
And your prejudice won't keep you warm tonight
Oh, the devil will find work for idle hands to do
I stole, and then I lied
Just because you asked me to
But now you know the truth about me
    You won't see me anymore
Well, I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh
    But no more apologies
    No more, no more apologies
    Oh, I'm too tired
    I'm so sick and tired
And I'm feeling very sick and ill today
But I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh
    Oh, my sacred one...
    Oh...

    Lyrics

    Shyness is nice, and
    Shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life
    You'd like to
    Shyness is nice, and
    Shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life
    You'd like to
So, if there's something you'd like to try
If there's something you'd like to try

    Writing frightening verse
To a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg
Ask me, ask me, ask me
Ask me, ask me, ask me
    Because if it's not love
Then it's the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb

Nature is a language, can't you read?
Nature is a language can't you read?
So ask me, ask me, ask me

  • The Smith - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - with lyrics

    4:05

There Is a Light That Never Goes Out is a song by the British alternative rock group The Smiths, written by singer Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr. It was originally featured on their third album The Queen Is Dead (1986). The song was released as a single in France in 1987,[1] but in other territories - including the United Kingdom - was not released as a single until 1992, five years after The Smiths split up. It reached number 25 on the UK Singles Chart.[2] Morrissey released a live version of the song as a double A-side with his cover of Patti Smith's Redondo Beach in 2005 - this version reached number 11 in the UK charts. The song has received considerable critical acclaim, and is viewed by many music critics and fans as one of the greatest songs of all time.

  • The Smiths - This Charming Man

    2:46

The Smiths - This Charming Man (Generation 80) (1983) (HD)

A rare one for me, I never was a big fan of the Smiths (didn't buy their records or go to see em) but I've always enjoyed this one and since it was among all the Generation 80 (Belgian TV) footage I obtained recently I thought it deserved the old clean up treatment... :-)

So here is another vintage 80's track from 1983 on the Belgian TV show Generation 80. It's The Smith and This Charming Man which is definitely a sight and sound that could only have come out of the 80's... :-)

Strange thinking back to the first time I saw them on TV with this song, can always remember sitting there in me Pork Pie hat, braces, Doc Martens and Specials T'Shirt saying to myself Who the feck is this weirdo dressed like that and waving Daffodils about in the air like he's just fell out of the 60 or time travelled on some mad LSD trip but secretly thinking Gawd, that's a great sound and vocals though... :-)

Cleaned Up, Sharpened Up and ReDubbed with a nice crisp clean audio track (the Only Smiths track I have actually)... enjoy... :-)

The Smiths perform Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others for the only time live at the Brixton Academy, London 12th December 1986. Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before was released in 1987 and features on the group's 1987 album Strangeways, Here We Come.

    Lyrics

    Stop me, oh, stop me
Stop me if you think that you've heard this one before
    Stop me, oh, stop me
Stop me if you think that you've heard this one before
    Nothing's changed
I still love you, oh, I still love you
Only slightly, only slightly less than I used to, my love
    I was delayed, I was way-laid
    An emergency stop
I smelt the last ten seconds of life
I crashed down on the crossbar
And the pain was enough to make a shy, bald, Buddhist reflect
    And plan a mass murder
Who said I'd lied to her?
Oh, who said I'd lied because I never? I never
Who said I'd lied because I never?
I was detained, I was restrained
And broke my spleen and broke my knee
And then he really laced into me
    Friday night in-out patients
Who said I'd lied to her?
Oh, who said I'd lied? Because I never, I never
Who said I'd lied? Because I never
    And so I drank one
    It became four
And when I fell on the floor
    I drank more
    Stop me, oh, stop me
Stop me if you think that you've heard this one before
    Stop me, oh, stop me
Stop me if you think that you've heard this one before
    Nothing's changed
I still love you, oh, I still love you
Only slightly, only slightly less than I used to, my love

    Shoplifters of the world
    Hand it over
    Hand it over
    Hand it over
    Learn to love me
    And assemble the ways
    Now, today, tomorrow, and always
My only weakness is a listed crime
But last night the plans of a future war
Was all I saw on Channel Four
    Shoplifters of the world
    Unite and take over
    Shoplifters of the world
    Hand it over
    Hand it over
    Hand it over
A heartless hand on my shoulder
    A push and it's over
    Alabaster crashes down
(Six months is a long time)
Tried living in the real world
    Instead of a shell
    But before I began
I was bored before I even began
    Shoplifters of the world
    Unite and take over
    Shoplifters of the world
    Unite and take over
    Shoplifters of the world
    Unite and take over
    Shoplifters of the world
    Take over

    Sing me to sleep
    Sing me to sleep
    I'm tired and I
I want to go to bed
    Sing me to sleep
    Sing me to sleep
    And then leave me alone
Don't try to wake me in the morning
    'Cause I will be gone
    Don't feel bad for me
    I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go
    Sing me to sleep
    Sing me to sleep
I don't want to wake up
    On my own anymore
    Sing to me
    Sing to me
I don't want to wake up
    On my own anymore
    Don't feel bad for me
    I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
    I really want to go
    There is another world
    There is a better world
    Well, there must be
    Well, there must be
    Well, there must be
    Well, there must be
    Well...
    Bye bye
    Bye bye
    Bye...

    Lyrics

Is it wrong to want to live on your own?
No, it's not wrong, but I must know
    How can someone so young
    Sing words so sad?
Sheila take a, Sheila take a bow
Boot the grime of this world in the crotch, dear
    And don't go home tonight
Come out and find the one that you love and who loves you
The one that you love and who loves you
    Oh
Is it wrong not to always be glad
No, it's not wrong, but I must add
    How can someone so young
    Sing words so sad
Sheila take a, Sheila take a bow
Boot the grime of this world in the crotch, dear
    And don't go home tonight
Come out and find the one that you love and who loves you
The one that you love and who loves you
Take my hand and off we stride
Oh, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
    You're a girl and I'm a boy
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
    la, la, la, la, la
Take my hand and off we stride
Oh, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
    I'm a girl and you're a boy
    La, la, la, la, la
    La, la, la, la, la
Sheila take a, Sheila take a bow
La, la, la, la, la, la
Throw your homework onto the fire
Come out and find the one that you love
Come out and find the one you love

???? The Queen Is Dead, 1986

    A dreaded sunny day
So I meet you at the cemetry gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
    A dreaded sunny day
So I meet you at the cemetry gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
    While Wilde is on mine

So we go inside and we gravely read the stones
All those people, all those lives
    Where are they now?
    With loves, and hates
    And passions just like mine
    They were born
    And then they lived
    And then they died
    It seems so unfair
    I want to cry

You say : 'Ere thrice the sun done salutation to the dawn
And you claim these words as your own
But I've read well, and I've heard them said
A hundred times (maybe less, maybe more)
    If you must write prose/poems
The words you use should be your own
Don't plagiarise or take on loan
    'Cause there's always someone, somewhere
With a big nose, who knows
And who trips you up and laughs
    When you fall
Who'll trip you up and laugh
    When you fall

You say : 'Ere long done do does did
Words which could only be your own
    And then produce the text
    From whence was ripped
    (Some dizzy whore, 1804)

    A dreaded sunny day
So let's go where we're happy
And I meet you at the cemetry gates
Oh, Keats and Yeats are on your side

    A dreaded sunny day
So let's go where we're wanted
And I meet you at the cemetry gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
    But you lose
'Cause weird lover Wilde is on mine

    Sure!
