  • The Rankin Family: Chi Mi Na Morbheanna

    3:56

The Gaelic words of this 1856 song speak of returning to the familiar misty hills of one's homeland, seeing again those who will greet one as a friend. It has always reminded me of the Scottish, Irish, English, and Icelandic settlers who came to make a new life in the harsh land where I live (central Canada). Many of them found only backbreaking work, freezing winters, death, and heartbreak and did indeed give up and return to their homeland, leaving behind the ruins of old homesteads and the graves of family.

This version is sung by the Rankin Family (from their first, self-titled album). The photographs are my own.

    Thanks for watching!

Fare Thee Well Love, one of my favorite songs from the rankin family.

    Lyrics

    Fare thee Well, love
    Fare thee Well, love
    Far away, you must go.
    Take your heart, love
    Take your heart, love
Will we never meet again no more?
    Far across, love
    Far across, love.
    O'er mountains and country wide
    Take my heart, love
    Take my heart, love
No one knows the tears I've cried.
    So I'll drink today, love,
    I'll sing to you, love
in pauper's glory, my time I'll bide
    No home or ties, love,
A restless rover, if I can't have you
    by my side.
    Oh come back, love
    Oh come back, love
    The sun and moon
    refuse to shine.
    Since I've gone, love
    Gone away love
this lonely girl has had no peace of mind
    So I'll drink today, love,
    I'll sing to you, love
in pauper's glory, my time I'll bide
    No home or ties, love,
A restless rover, if I can't have you
    by my side.
Fare thee well love, fare thee well love Fare thee well, fare thee well
Far away, you must go. Far away you must go.
Take my heart, love Take my heart
Take my heart, love Take your heart
Will we never meet again no more? Will we never meet again no more?
Will we never meet again no more? Will we never meet again no more?

  • The Rankin Family -The Mull River Shuffle Live from Vancouver BC

    7:51

    LYRICS
    Picture this Ladies and Gentlemen....
It's fifty years ago on a small country farm
    Johnny McMaster's place
    And it's Friday night
You've just finished ten hot days of back breaking labor
And the hay....the hay is finally in
You're sitting around the kitchen table
Under the dim light of a kerosene lantern
Everyone is laughing and joking and telling stories....
    about their neighbors
    You're halfway through a bottle of....moonshine
And you're getting alllllll fired up....for the danccccce
Ladies and Gentlemen....I give you the Mull River Shuffle

    Here comes Mister MacNeil
The fine shape that he is in
There is no telling which way he'll feel
After his twister around the bend

Raisin' the jar and raisin' hell
There's plenty of stories that they will tell
Some were born of true detail
    and some were purely fiction

Look up yonder it's old MacPhee
He's having a few he can hardly see
Wrapped his buggy around a tree
    Someone call the Mounties

Raisin' the jar and raisin' hell
There's plenty of stories that they will tell
Some were born of true detail
    and some were purely fiction

    Up spoke fine young Cameron
At the dance got a fearful hammerin'
    He'll be stutterin' and stammerin'
There'll be hell to pay come Saturday

Raisin' the jar and raisin' hell
there's plenty of stories that they will tell
Some were born of true detail
    and some were purely fiction

    Danny Wright had a light
    Burning bright every night
Waiting for the fish to bite
    along the shores of 'Hogomagh

Raisin' the jar and raisin' hell
There's plenty of stories that they will tell
Some were born of true detail
    and some were purely fiction

There they stand by the door
    Selling bush by the score
Asking you to buy some more
    Along the shores of 'Hogomagh

Raisin' the jar and raisin' hell
There's plenty of stories that they will tell
Some were born of true detail
    and some are purely fiction

    (chorus)
I'll go home, I'll go home
Full of the devil and full of the rum
I'll go home, I'll go home
We'll all go home in the morning
    (repeat 5x)

    ~ COLD WINDS ~

So hard to let you go
    No day passes me by
    But I hear your voice
And I miss your warm smile
    And the spring is blooming
And the snow has melted away
    There's no sun shining
Through the clouds hanging over me
For cold winds chilled my bones
    And tears filled my eyes
    Our final farewell
    Beneath that bitter winter sky
    Time heals wounds
    It'll see me through
But I'll need many more moons
    To forget you
For cold winds chilled my bones
    And tears filled my eyes
    Our final farewell
    Beneath that bitter winter sky
And if my broken wings ever mend
And I'm free to fly again
My wait in vain for joy will end
    If we're joined again
    Cold winds
