    3:39

Official video forThe Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) from the album 'Sunshine on Leith'

    Lyrics

When I wake up, well, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
When I go out, yeah, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you
If I get drunk, well, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I haver, yeah, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's haverin' to you

But I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door

When I'm workin', yes, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's workin' hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work I do
I'll pass almost every penny on to you
When I come home (when I come home), oh, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow old, well, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's growin' old with you

But I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door

    Ta-da-da-ta, ta-da-da-ta, ta-da-da-ta, ta-da-da-ta
    Ta-da-da-dan-te-la-dan-te-la-dan-te-le-la-da-da
    Ta-da-da-ta, ta-da-da-ta, ta-da-da-ta, ta-da-da-ta
    Ta-da-da-dan-te-la-dan-te-la-dan-te-le-la-da-da

When I'm lonely, well, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's lonely without you
And when I'm dreamin', well, I know I'm gonna dream
I'm gonna dream about the time when I'm with you
When I go out (when I go out), well, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you
And when I come home (when I come home), yes, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home with you
I'm gonna be the man who's comin' home with you

    Ta-da-da-ta, ta-da-da-ta, ta-da-da-ta, ta-da-da-ta
    Ta-da-da-dan-te-la-dan-te-la-dan-te-le-la-da-da
    Ta-da-da-ta, ta-da-da-ta, ta-da-da-ta, ta-da-da-ta

Born in Edinburgh’s Eastern General and living in the city until the age of eight and returning to live there from the age of 18, there’s no doubt Craig and Charlie Reid regard the capital as home.
The most poignant song from their new album ‘Angry Cyclist’, Streets of Edinburgh is a tribute to the city. It sings from the heart about what the capital and the people they have known over the years, mean to them.

“Folk have been asking about that song – were you waiting to write it?” said Craig, who didn’t want it to be sentimental. “It wasn’t like that at all. Sometimes when you get a completed tune it takes weeks and weeks and weeks to get the lyrics. This time I got the tune, then the lyrics just kind of fell out. It didn’t take very long. I hadn’t been thinking about the city or anything like that. I just kind of wrote about my feelings towards it and experiences.”

The accompanying video was written and directed by Rianne White who, as well as directing the band’s recent Angry Cyclist video, is renowned for her work with the likes of Young Fathers (‘Lord’ video). It acts as a sequel to the Angry Cyclist video, offering a new visual perspective of humanity. Contrasting from the high intensity movement and environment, Rianne wanted to focus on the freedom of unplugging and looking up and outward. It includes a subtle continuity of established faces found in Angry Cyclist within the Streets of Edinburgh. Conceptually the video explores experiencing the space and rhythm laced around the seven hills that Edinburgh sits on. Working with each hill as a centre point, the video navigates neighbourhoods influenced by reflection and distinctive architecture. In short, it’s a love letter to Edinburgh.
********************************************************************* “with its Everly’s-style harmonies, heart tugging epic Streets of Edinburgh is a thoroughfare classic to rival those of Messrs Rafferty and McTell.” MOJO

“a gorgeously eloquent paean to their birthplace (Depending on your viewpoint this place is blessed or cursed), as immediate and affecting as Letter From America or Sunshine On Leith.” RECORD COLLECTOR

“Streets of Edinburgh is as good a song as you’ll ever hear about the nostalgic resonance of a hometown.” THE TELEGRAPH

“Streets of Edinburgh is a beautifully heartfelt homage to their home town.” THE TIMES “A touching, grandiose, string heavy paean to their home town.“ CLASSIC POP

“there is definitely no need to second guess Streets of Edinburgh, an emotional tribute to the Scottish capital, powerful in its simplicity.” THE SCOTSMAN

“Streets of Edinburgh is a paean to their home city as beautiful as Sunshine On Leith itself.” THE YORK PRESS

“Streets of Edinburgh, is a sentimental look at the city The Proclaimers call home. The living and the ghosts that inhabit the memories of the writers give meaning to the stones and concrete. “An air of sordid passion, a look of dirty grace. But not right in your face. It’s not that kind of place” might not be Visit Scotland’s preferred description of the country’s capital city, but the song is a firm candidate for the duo’s next anthemic tune.” LOUDER THAN WAR

“With lungs as full and as open as ever on ‘Streets of Edinburgh’, the Reid’s’ emotionally charged outlook is apparent as they locate themselves and their souls in a place and time.” GIGSLUTZ
“a new Scots anthem” DAILY RECORD

  • Proclaimers : Live on Letterman 1989 - Im Gonna Be

A live performance of I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) on David Letterman, complete with an entertaining interview. This is before I'm Gonna Be was a hit in the US.

There are a lot of comments about where they are now. As of 2020 they have released 11 albums and continue to tour worldwide with a fantastic and tight live band. I encourage those interested to check out their live album recorded at the Belly Up in San Diego in 2016.

    from This Is The Story

This is the story of our first teacher
    Shetland made her jumpers
And the devil made her features
Threw up her hands when my mum said our names
Embroidered all her stories with slanderous claims
    It's over and done with...

This is the story of losing my virginity
I held my breath and the bed held a trinity
People I'm making no claims to no mystery
    But sometimes it feel like
    My sex life's all history
    It's over and done with...

I'm not saying these events didn't
Touch our lives in any way
But, ah, they didn't make the impression
    That some people say

This is the story of watching a man dying
    The subject's unpopular
But I don't feel like lying
When I think of it now I acted like a sinner
    I just washed my hands
Then I went for my dinner

    Yeah
    It's over and done with...

  • The Proclaimers - Im Gonna Be

    4:07

    Video Edit By Km Music

    I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) is a song written and performed by Scottish duo The Proclaimers, and first released as the lead single from their 1988 album Sunshine on Leith. The song reached number 11 in the UK Singles Chart on its initial release, and it has since become their most popular song worldwide, initially becoming a number 1 hit in Iceland, before reaching number 1 in both Australia and New Zealand in early 1990.

In 1993, following its appearance in the American film Benny & Joon, the song was released in North America and many other countries around the world, it reached the top five in both the United States and Canada. In 2007, the Proclaimers re-recorded the song with English comedians Peter Kay and Matt Lucas for the UK's Comic Relief charity telethon, scoring a number one hit in the UK, outperforming their original UK singles performance.

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) has become a live staple at the Proclaimers' concerts. The duo played it at Edinburgh 50,000 – The Final Push at Murrayfield Stadium on 6 July 2005, the final concert of Live 8, to symbolise the conclusion of The Long Walk to Justice.

The song was mainly written by Craig Reid in mid-1987 while waiting to travel to a Hibernian Football Club match in Aberdeen. Reid recalled, I can remember sitting at the piano wondering how many steps it would be to the new classroom (I originally thought 83) and the chords just came to me. I reckon I wrote the whole thing in 45 minutes. I knew that it was a good song, maybe even a single, but I had no idea how popular it would become. Reid has said that the band's earnings from the song are about five times the rest of their catalogue combined.

  • Hes Just Like Me - The Proclaimers

    2:44

    He's Just Like Me

    by The Proclaimers

from their album Born Innocent released 2003

His father's pride, his mother's joy
The end result of love, a beautiful little boy
You think he's perfect, and that he'll be
The answer to the disappointment that you feel in me

    But he's just like me
    You'll never own him
    You won't control him
    He'll never phone
    You civilise him
And I'll criticise him and along the way
He'll grow to be a man

    How many mothers
    Gaze on their sons
And hope with all their heart
That he's gonna be the one
Who'll never roam and never stray
    Who'll understand women better
    Than his daddy does
But all I've got to say is

    He's just like me
    You'll never own him
    You won't control him
    He'll never phone
    You civilise him
And he'll criticise him and along the way
He'll grow to be a man

and then there'll come a time
With tears and eyes all red when
His girl will say I blame his mother
I'll say no you blame me instead

    Cause he's just like me
    You'll never own him
    You won't control him
    He'll never phone
    She civilised him
And I criticised him and along the way
He grew to be your man

    He's just like me
    You'll never own him
    You won't control him
    He'll never phone
    You civilise him
And I'll criticise him and along the way
He'll grow to be a man

    Lyrics
When I was a younger man
When I was a silly boy
    I didn't need a thing
    I was strong as anything
I viewed solitude as a joy

But since I met you I'm distraught
You wandered in and now I'm caught
I never thought I would see
    Someone so truly good
Someone who's so everything I'm not

I want to spend my life with you
Don't want to live all alone
I can't conceive of the years left to me
    Without you in our home

But what if what if what if what
If it's not perfect then it's not
    But every care I take
    Nothing I won't forsake
To dwell beside what you've got

Every time I think about you
    I think I can't live without you
I tell you something I am nothing without you

I want to spend my life with you
Don't want to live all alone
I can't conceive of the years left to me
    Without you in our home

I want to spend my life with you
Don't want to live all alone
I can't conceive of the years left to me
    Without you in our home

    Without you in our home

  • The Proclaimers - 500 miles! Live Acoustic

    3:46

I'm a club DJ and I get home at 4am. One night about a month after this song was #1, MTV had the boys on at 4am. I recorded it because I really like the song and wanted another version of the video to play at the club.

This version ROCKS, it's live and acoustic with just the two. No drum, nothing and wow, the energy is amazing, like they first played it.

Also, this performance is for the camera. I'll bet, at the most, including the boys, maybe 10 people were in the studio to see it live.

Here are the Proclaimers, Craig and Charlie.

I have grown to like this performance the most as time passes because it is so raw and powerful. A modern folk love song classic.

4 million + views. Wow. I'm sure the boys, Doctor Who and the whole cast, and you my friends have all Taken a look.

    Thanks and Enjoy

    Lyrics,
    My heart was broken
    My heart was broken
    Sorrow, sorrow
    Sorrow, sorrow
    My heart was broken
    My heart was broken
You saw it, you claimed it
You touched it, you saved it
    My tears are drying
    My tears are drying
    Thank you, thank you
    Thank you, thank you
    My tears are drying
    My tears are drying
    Your beauty and kindness
    Made tears clear my blindness
    While I'm worth
    My room on this Earth
    I will be with you
    While the Chief
    Puts sunshine on Leith
    I'll thank Him
    For His work
    And your birth
    And my birth
    Yeah, yeah, yeah
    My heart was broken
    My heart was broken
    Sorrow, sorrow
    Sorrow, sorrow
    My heart was broken
    My heart was broken
You saw it, you claimed it
You touched it, you saved it
    While I'm worth

This is an extremely rare clip of the Proclaimers performing live on The Tube on Jan 30 1987 - before they had a record contract!

This is actually the second of two songs performed. I couldn't get a copy of the first one, but someone has (finally!) posted it on YouTube. Click here to watch their first ever television performance performing Letter from America -

    Lyrics
Now I've got a question baby
    What makes you cry?
'Cos I haven't seen any water
In the corners of your eyes
For a day, or a week
Or a month, or a year
    Haven't seen much of you
Since you left me my dear

Can't you see that I'm hurting
    How I'm falling apart
Don't you care about my drinking
    Or my poor lonely heart
    I thought you liked football
    You didn't mind those videos
    And my dog didn't mean
To ruin your clothes (he can't help it)

Now you won't take my phone calls
    You sent my letters back
    You're paying for a lawyer
To stab me in the back
Then I saw you on the street
You looked happy, that's a fact
    I'm impressed - it's a hell of an act

Angel - admit it, admit it
Darlin' - admit it, admit it
Your love for me didn't die
    It's just sleepin'
    And it wakes every night
    To your weepin'

Now I hope you can hear me
    Wherever you are
    In a cheap hotel room
Or the back seat of a car
    I make up those situations
    I don't know if they're true
But I'll tell you, for now, they'll do

Angel - admit it, admit it
Darlin' - admit it, admit it
Your love for me didn't die
    It's just sleepin'
    And it wakes every night
    To your weeping'

Now I've got a question bady
    What makes you cry?
