    About 2 Meter Sessions
    ====================
Based in the Netherlands, 2 Meter Sessions is an independent, ongoing (new) music platform with a great legacy. Monthly we film 3 to 4 sessions with promising and breakthrough acts from all over the world.

Many well-known acts have visited the show; from James Taylor, Elliott Smith and David Crosby to Damien Jurado, Ben Howard and Josh Ritter, via Radiohead, Nirvana, Coldplay and Foo Fighters. Archive footage can regularly be seen in (theatrical) documentary movies, like “Mystify: Michael Hutchence” (with footage of our session with INXS, filmed in 1997), “Heaven Adores You” (with footage of our session with Elliott Smith, filmed in 1998) and “All I Can Say” (with footage of our session with Blind Melon, filmed in 1993).

The show started back in 1987 by radio presenter Jan Douwe Kroeske. On his popular national radio show he persuaded New-Zealand band Crowded House to play a couple of songs. The response of the public was so great, that 2 Meter Sessions quickly became a household name. In 1993, the show made a successful transition to national television. From there the show became a national phenomenon, for over 10 years, with filmed sessions of new talent, breakthrough acts and arrived career artists. Almost a million of 2 Meter Sessions cd’s were sold in the Netherlands.

I picked this demo up recently and it blew me away- so much, that I thought I would listen to it and post right away. I think some of these tracks may have been scattered across the Omnivore reissues and the long out of print box set.. but I don't think all of them have been released.
Some of my favorite Posies songs are on here- Farewell Typewriter & This One's Taken (which they did when I saw them at Cattle Club in 1991). This appears to be from more than one session, recorded after Dear 23 and before Frosting. Coool.

Summary: With three decades of alternative rock already under their belts, the Posies released their 7th album in 2010, and stopped by Wolfgang's Vault during their recent San Francisco tour-stop to catch us up. Their career started with alt hits like Dream All Day, and continues with the same harmony and sophistication on this year's Blood/Candy. We started out as teenagers, twenty-some-odd years ago, and we made this lovely, very innocent kind of record that existed in stark contrast to the prevailing winds that were blowing in Seattle at the time, notes Ken Stringfellow. Ever since then, people tend to think of us as this very sunny, vintage-sounding band. But we really haven't been that way for a long time.

There are so many influences and styles woven into what we do and we've never made the same record twice, not even close to it, adds Jon Auer. And our new record is as sophisticated and challenging as anything we've ever made. Check out the Posies' Vault Session.

    Notes, rambles, etc.:

Well rattle my cage and call me Shakey. Kamenliter had another source for this show! I bet it’s at least 2nd gen, but one may never know, really. A first listen to his source made me think - damn, that’s pretty muddy. But it has the low end my master was missing. A match made in pop-grunge heaven. You can actually now feel the kick drum. And it has to be said that Musburger is a monster!

We both re-sampled our cassettes at 96/24. Sure, it’s unnecessary for the low end, but I’m not one to advocate upsampling.

Tape flip for source 2 has to be one of my fastest ever. Occurs in the break before ‘Solar Sister’. Flip for 1 happens just after the start of ‘Apology’ and doesn’t recover until the middle of ‘Dream All Day’. Source 2 then runs out 7 minutes into ‘Flood.’

Took me too long to settle on a graphic for this. I swore I had a poster from this tour and have looked everywhere for it. Must've dreamed it? This is the back of the setlist from the first time I saw them three years earlier. I swear I taped it, but I think it came out really bad as I can't find it.

    Peace. Enjoy.

I went to over 50 Cattle Club shows, and this one is probably my favorite, if not one of the top 2 or 3 (Yo La Tengo/Barbara Manning 1992 and Buffalo Tom/Sebadoh/Pavement being the others). Dear 23 had just come out and I had it for about a month and was a big fan already. I had no idea what to expect live, but I thought that it would be jangly and low key. It was probably the loudest show I ever saw at Cattle. When I was taping, I could not hear any vocals, but luckily the mic picked them up. You get TWO big star covers- Feel and I am the Cosmos, years before Auer and Stringfellow would join big star. Holy shit. IT took days for my hearing to recover.

  • The Posies - Solar Sister - Guitar Jamthrough

    3:37

Solar Sister! The Posies off 1993's Frosting on the Beater album. It's a great record of almost Grunge. What makes it stand out from that Seattle sound, is the fine vocal harmonies from Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer. They were made to sing together.

These videos serve as lessons on how I play this bunch of Pop, Rock, and Reggae songs - sometimes as a single guitarist playing the only guitar part, though that's rare. And sometimes if there is more than one guitar part, then trying to find the single good path through the tune. I complete one pass, demonstrating different Rhythm parts, styles, and techniques. There is no talking. No discussion. No note-for-note explanations. As such, for clarity, my guitar is supposed to be louder in the mix than it would ever be in a live setting. But, if you really want to hear what I hear, do what I do and put on a good pair headphones with great bass response! It's worth it.

Why this is important to Rhythm Guitar:
The drone. This song is in Drop D on the low E string, but I play it differently. One guitar in a band should lower the low E to D, but the other guitarist should do what I do here. Drop the HIGH E string down to D and both should capo the third fret. The Drop D tuning on the high E string just makes the second guitar ring like it should. All those F notes! Remember, there are two guitars in this band, and playing different things is what makes a band sound huge and oftentimes awesome. Jon Auer has played this song without Dropping the low E string down.

It's a cool trick dropping the high E string. Especially if you love the jangle like I do.

Four songs (With Those Eyes, Solar Sister, Flavor Of The Month, and I Am The Cosmos) from the Posies, as they rocked the Middle East Restaurant (Downstairs) in 2001...a bit more energetic (and certainly a LOT louder!) than their acoustic shows upstairs the year before! Enjoy!

    4:03

Off Frosting On the Beater (1994).
Say goodbye to your friends and family
    Pack your promises silently
Leave a note on your kitchen table
This is all you will ever be

So hope for a better place for a better time for a better speed
So hope for a better use for a better word for a better need
And if you listen close enough
    You might hear too much
    Hard as sharp and razor-rough
    You've never seen the such...

    It's the definite door
    To another dimension
    Nothing
    No more
    (not even a mention...)

Keeping track of the eyesight streaming
    Isn't part of the regimen
    Many hours of sleepless dreaming
Unaware of the mess you're in
And if you didn't have a clue
    You probably never will
And all the things you didn't do
    Will inundate you still...

    It's the definite door
    To another dimension
    Nothing
    No more
    (not even a mention...)

Better cross your heart, make it people-proof try to fight the fright
And have a real good trip, see you when you fall don't forget to
    Write yourself back...
And if you fail to see the point
    Of doubting all you do
    Don't forget to blame yourself
    There's nothing else for you...

Say goodbye to your friends and family
    Pack your promises silently
Funny how they forget to tell you
This is all you will ever be

This is all you will ever be now
This is all you will ever be
This is all you will ever be now
This is all you will ever be...

    From Last.fm:
The Posies began as a set of informal home recordings by Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow in Bellingham, Washington in 1987 and eventually became a full-fledged band. Those demos were released as the album Failure, and Mike Musberger and Rick Roberts joined soon after, allowing the band to play its first live shows in Seattle and Bellingham. The four then moved into a house in Seattle's University District. The band's first full album was their major-label debut Dear 23 in 1990. It was produced by John Leckie and features lush orchestrations for the songwriters' literate, clever, melodic pop with occasional hard-hitting guitars.

During the recording for their third album, Roberts left and was replaced by Dave Fox, and during a European tour, Musberger left. In 1994, Brian Young took over on drums and Joe Howard on bass. In 1997, the band went on hiatus while the members concentrated on outside projects, including solo albums and work with Lucky Me , Skyward and Fountains Of Wayne. From 1997 to 2001, there was only sporadic Posies activity.

After a satisfying tour as a duo, Auer and Stringfellow brought the band back to active service, now with Darius Minwalla and Matt Harris. Stringfellow also works with the Europe-based band The Disciplines and provides support for REM.

  • Radiohead Blowout live

The quality is absolutely ARSE but it's a rarity none-the-less. I found this a few years ago on a VHS tape in the bottom of a box full of other guff underneath loads of crap in my parents' attic. It's from a show called 'The Beat' on ITV with Gary Crowley. Missed the beginning of a show so presumably missed a performance of Creep. Though I recall a vague memory that it might have been something else from Pablo Honey. Might already be on youtube somewhere in better quality. Couldn't find it in a quick search.
