  • New Orleans v Swing v Bebop: The Great Jazz Critics War 1942 -1947 Part 1

    24:44

Any jazz fan visiting the US in the mid 1940s would have found themselves right in the middle of a cultural war. The Modernsts v Revivalist battle of words is by far the most agressive conflict jazz has yet endured. Taking place in several periodicals it eventually helped to define Jazz as an Art Form.

  • GREAT DRUMMERS part 1

    9:34

This is the first part of a line-up of live footage samples from the greatest drummers that brought great rhythm joy to everybody's life. It's basically centered on Jazz, but not exclusively, and with a chronological display, wherever it was possible, due to the existance of filmed material. The modern drumset was completed and received the designation of jazz drums by the 20's, when the hi-hat pedal system and its pair of cymbals (opposed to each other) was invented. Not only the 'Hi-Hat' name, but also the french designation for that mechanism, Charleston, also shows a clear reference to the period of the 'roaring twenties', when the drums achieved its actual configuration, and are used in Pop, Rock, Soul, Rhythm'n Blues, Blues, and many musical styles, besides Jazz.

  • Lil Hardin Armstrong: The Early Years

    6:00

In this episode of Wild Women of Song we begin talking about the early years in the life of our first lady of jazz - Lil Hardin Armstrong!

Lil, who is usually only mentioned as an incidental footnote to her husband Louis Armstrong, is frankly overlooked as a jazz pianist. Yet her powerful, rhythmic style was remarked upon by many musicians, and although certainly not a soloist like Earl Hines, she did something few musicians still know how to do: delight in the role of supporting the singer or soloist, and play in a manner meant almost to disappear within the fabric of the rhythm section. She played a straight ahead, no nonsense 4/4 groove that drove every band she was in.

    SCOTT KETTNER
When Scott Kettner looks at a map, he sees a direct line that connects the rivers of northeastern Brazil to the parishes of New Orleans and the streets of Brooklyn. A master percussionist, bandleader, producer and songwriter, Kettner is the guiding force behind Nation Beat, a band whose teeming, vibrant rhythms find common ground in the primal maracatu rhythms of Brazilʼs northeastern region, the Big Easyʼs funky, hypnotic second-line and strolling Mardi Gras Indians, and the unfettered freedom of big-city downtown jazz.
No less an icon than Willie Nelson, who invited Nation Beat to perform at his 2008 Farm Aid concert, proclaimed, After I heard their CD I became a fan and I was overwhelmed by their music. Equally enthusiastic was writer David R. Adler of Philadelphia Online, who described Nation Beat as a pan-hemispheric, post- colonial party; a rootsy rhythm riot, conceived in bright colors and infectious melodies.

  • Karama Presents the roots of Jazz Pt.1: Cake-Walk 1860-1910

    2:45

Roots of jazz. (Cake-Walk to Ragtime to Fox-Trot !)
    Pt.1: The Cake Walk !
    Music by The Victor Minstrels
    3 Cake Walk Traditional Songs)
    Video from 1903 and probably 1900/ 1915
