You've got me nervous to speak
So I just won't say anything at all
I've got an urge to release
And you keep tellin' me to hold on
You've got me nervous to move
So I just won't give anything to you
You got me turnin' all around to be who you need me to

  • The Nerves - Hanging On The Telephone, Original version 45, Blondie. 1976.

    2:06

The Nerves - Hanging On The Telephone

    Original Release 1976

    From The Nerves EP

The Nerves were a mid-'70s power pop trio based in Los Angeles, California, featuring guitarist Jack Lee, bassist Peter Case, and drummer Paul Collins. All three members composed songs and sang. They managed a national tour, including a few dates with The Ramones, but they lasted just a short time and self-released only one self-titled four-song EP in 1976, featuring the songs Hanging on the Telephone (Lee), When You Find Out (Case), Give Me Some Time (Lee), and Working Too Hard (Collins). The EP was distributed by independent Bomp! Records.

I'm in the phone booth, it's the one across the hall
If you don't answer, I'll just ring it off the wall
I know he's there, but I just had to call
Don't leave me hanging on the telephone (2x)

I heard your mother now she's going out the door
Did she go to work or just go to the store
All those things she said, I told you to ignore
Oh why can't we talk again (3x)
Don't leave me hanging on the telephone (2x)

It's good to hear your voice, you know it's been so long
If I don't get your call then everything goes wrong
I want to tell you something you've known all along
Don't leave me hanging on the telephone

I had to interrupt and stop this conversation
Your voice across the line gives me a strange sensation
I'd like to talk when I can show you my affection
    Oh I can't control myself (3x)
Don't leave me hanging on the telephone

Hang up and run to me
Whoah, hang up and run to me (3x)
Whoah oh oh oh run to me

  • The Coverups – Live in San Francisco

    2:31

The Coverups (Green Day) - Walking Out on Love (The Nerves cover) – San Francisco, Live, 3-8-18, front row, Thee Parkside. Secret Show! Billie Joe: “Is Tré Cool around anymore? Or was he like ‘fu*k this, this is hot!’?” :P

    Other Tidbits:

“Our first overseas show!” The band joked.. The previous 3 Coverups shows were held in Albany at the Ivy Room.

Thee Parkside is a bar and music venue which has a capacity of only ~100 people, about half of the capacity of the Ivy Room. The ad flyer for the show featured a picture of Molly Ringwald smoking in the movie The Breakfast Club, and in honor of that, Thee Parkside played the movie on their TV sets above the bar during the show, which Billie Joe pointed out during the concert was pretty cool.

There were many friends and family in attendance and it was essentially a private show, but it was also open to fans that were able to figure out the clues the band left on their social media pages. Admission was only $13, and with it, we also got a raffle ticket. Many joke prizes were raffled off, including such items as a toy helicopter, Mike’s American flag jacket, KISS vinyl records, an American flag ukulele, and a double-neck guitar, lol.

The Coverups, Billie Joe, Mike Dirnt, Jason White, Bill Schneider, Lee Bothwick and Chris Dugan, all hung out after the show, talking with the fans and taking pictures.

Tré Cool joined the band for ‘Sheena Is a Punk Rocker’, ‘A Quick One’, and for ‘Astro Zombies’, Sara (who just had her birthday a couple days ago) sang lead vocals sang lead vocals with her husband Tré on the drums.

Unlike at the shows in Albany, there was a huge mosh pit in the center operating almost continuously throughout the concert. It also got very hot as well and the band joked that the stage was turning into a sauna, lol. Billie Joe: “Is Tré Cool around anymore? Or was he like ‘fu*k this, this is hot!’?” :P

Many of the fans recognized each other from previous Green Day and Coverups concerts. However, because the Thee Parkside could only allow in fans 21 years old and over, some fans could not make it.

Billie Joe (after 2 unclaimed raffle prizes were drawn): OK, I’ve got an idea… Guess what number I’m thinking of in my head… That’s right! (throwing the helicopter into the crowd) lol

Mike Dirnt: ‘Hella’ copter… East Bay lingo there… We came to the show and gave away ‘Hella’ copters… lol

“I didn’t play in that band…” (Mike jokingly replying to a fan who asked him to autograph the KISS album he won in the raffle, lol)

Billie Joe (to a front row fan): What are you doing? You're taking pictures?... You know that's like the worst angle, ever, right? The fan then proceeded to hold her camera way above her head (to get a better shot from a downward instead of an upward angle), to which Billie then posed for it. “There you go!” lol

The Longshot - Walking Out on Love (The Nerves cover) – San Francisco, Live, 4-17-18, 1st row, Thee Parkside. Billie Joe: Stop! Are you guys ready to dance or what? lol My name is Diesel… :P

    Other Tidbits:

The band performed their ‘first official ish show’ at Thee Parkside, a bar and music venue which has a capacity of only ~100 people. Although Billie Joe Armstrong introduced the band to the fans with joke names, The Longshot band members were Jeff Matika (bass), Kevin Preston (guitar) and David S. Field (drums).

They also sold their new 7 vinyl EP in addition to some new t-shirts. After the show, everyone hung out with the fans to sign autographs and take pictures and after the sound check, Billie Joe took a picture with me, which was very nice. Mack Narragon and Bill Schneider also autographed my setlist, and while talking to Mack, he said that their album is still in the mixing stage, which was nice to hear. Dead Sound also opened for the first Coverups show in Albany.

After San Francisco, the band is set to perform in Costa Mesa at The Wayfarer and The Redwood Bar in LA later this month in April. Similar to The Coverups shows, all their performances will be held at very small venues.

Many of the fans recognized each other from previous Green Day and Coverups concerts. However, because the Thee Parkside could only allow in fans 21 years old and over, some fans could not make it.

During Dead Sound’s opening set, Bill Schneider introduced themselves as ‘The Longshot’, and in return, Billie Joe introduced themselves as ‘Dead Sound’. “You’re welcome, Bill!” lol

Billie Joe (before 'Kill Your Friends'): Oh my God, wish us luck!

You know, I never used a tuner until 1994… True story!:P

(Before ‘Kiss Me Deadly ‘): Don't we deserve to have a little bit of fun with all the bullsh*t that's going on in the world? You need to get wet! (throws water from his bottle at the front row fans)

    Fan: Yeah Diesel!!
