    13:57

In the US, by the late 1930s and early 1940s, swing music had become the most popular musical style and remained so for several years, until it was supplanted in the late 1940s by the pop standards sung by the crooners who grew out of the big band Swing Era tradition. Bandleaders such as the Dorsey Brothers often helped launch the careers of vocalists who went on to popularity as solo artists, such as Frank Sinatra, who rose to fame as a singer during this time.In the 1940s, pure jazz began to become more popular, along with the blues, with artists like Ella Fitzgerald (A-Tisket, A-Tasket) and Billie Holiday (Strange Fruit) becoming nationally successful.

  • Let It Snow - Vaughn Monroe

    2:51

    My HD Revised Version at
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!, also known as Let It Snow, is a song written by lyricist Sammy Cahn and composer Jule Styne in 1945. The song was written in July 1945 in Hollywood, California during one of the hottest days on record. First recorded by Vaughn Monroe, it became a popular hit, reaching number one on the Billboard music chart the following year. One of the best-selling songs of all time, Let It Snow! has been covered countless times by many artists. Due to its seasonal lyrics, it is commonly regarded as a Christmas song. However, despite the song's cheery, holiday feel, it is a love song that never mentions Christmas.
First recorded in 1945 by Vaughn Monroe, it became a popular hit, reaching number one on the Billboard music chart the following year.

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn't show signs of stopping
And I've bought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

    When we finally kiss goodnight
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm

    The fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we're still goodbying
But as long as you love me so
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
    *************************************************
This song by Vaughn ranked #1 on the day I was born.
It was also the song used in the closing credits of , Die Hard 1 and Die Hard 2.

  • Best Of Lata Mangeshkar | Evergreen Bengali Songs | Aaj Noi Gun Gun | All Time Best Songs

    47:33

Lata Mangeshkar (born 28 September 1929) is an Indian singer, and occasional music-composer. She is one of the best-known and most respected playback singers in India. Mangeshkar's career started in 1942 and has spanned over seven decades. She has recorded songs for over a thousand Hindi films and has sung songs in over thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages, though primarily in Marathi and Hindi. She is the elder sister of singers Asha Bhosle, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar. She is the second vocalist to have ever been awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.
Lata Mangeshkar was born in a Marathi-speaking Gomantak Maratha family, in the princely state of Indore, part of the Central India Agency (now part of Madhya Pradesh). Her father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar was a classical singer and theater actor. Her mother Shevanti (Shudhamati) who was from Thalner, Maharashtra, was Deenanath's second wife. The family's last name used to be Hardikar; Deenanath changed it to Mangeshkar in order to identify his family with his native town, Mangeshi in Goa. Lata was named Hema at her birth. Her parents later renamed her Lata after a female character, Latika, in one of her father's plays, BhaawBandhan. Lata is the eldest child of her parents. Meena, Asha, Usha and Hridaynath are her siblings in sequence..
In 1942, when Mangeshkar was 13, her father died of heart disease. Master Vinayak (Vinayak Damodar Karnataki), the owner of Navyug Chitrapat movie company and a close friend of the Mangeshkar family, took care of them. He helped Lata get started in a career as a singer and actress. Mangeshkar moved to Mumbai in 1945 when Master Vinayak's company moved its headquarters there. She started taking lessons in Hindustani classical music from UstadAmanat Ali Khan . Following the partition of India in 1947, Ustad Amanat Ali Khan migrated to newly formed Pakistan, so Mangeshkar started to learn classical music under Amanat Khan Devaswale. Pandit Tulsidas Sharma, a pupil of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, also trained her.
In the 1950s, Mangeshkar sang songs composed by various music directors of the period, including Anil Biswas (in films such as Tarana and Heer), Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad Ali, S. D. Burman, Pandit Husan Lal Bhagat Ram (in films like Bari Behan, Meena Bazaar, Afsana, Aadhi Raat, Ansoo, Chhoti Bhabi, Adal-e-Jehangir) C. Ramchandra, Hemant Kumar, Salil Chowdhury, Khayyam, Ravi, Sajjad Hussain,Roshan, Kalyanji-Anandji, Vasant Desai, Sudhir Phadke, Hansraj Behl, Madan Mohan, and Usha Khanna. She sang the beautiful Bengali song Na Jeona in 1959 under Salil Chowdhury's baton. She has also sang songs like Rangila Bashite,Keno Kichu Kotha Bolo Na,O Mor Moynago,Ashar Srabon,Sat Bhai Champa Jagore,Amar Sopno Je,Hotam Jodi Tota Pakhi, Hai Re Poda Banshi, Aaj Noi Gun Gun, Aamar Swapna Je, Na Na Kache Eso Na, Aaj Tabe Ei Tuku, Otho Otho Suryai Re,O Amar Sajani Go, Haajaar Taaraar Aaloy,Ei Brishtite Bhije Mati etc

    Lyrics:
Never thought that you would be
standing here so close to me
there's so much I feel that I should say
but words can wait until some other day
Kiss me once, then kiss me twice
    Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time
Haven't felt like this, my dear
    Since I can't remember when
It's been a long, long time
You'll never know how many dreams
    I've dreamed about you
Or just how empty they all seemed without you
So kiss me once, then kiss me twice
    Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time
Ah, kiss me once, then kiss me twice
    Then kiss me once again
    It's been a long time
Haven't felt like this my dear
    Since I can't remember when
It's been a long, long time
You'll never know how many dreams

  • Sukiyaki

    3:09

Sukiyaki (Ue o Muite Arukou)- Kyu Sakamoto (English Translation and Lyrics)

    About the Lyrics

The lyrics tell the story of a man who looks up and whistles while he is walking so that his tears won't fall. The verses of the song describe his memories and feelings. The English-language lyrics of the version recorded by A Taste of Honey are not a translation of the original Japanese lyrics but a completely different set of lyrics set to the same basic melody.

The title Sukiyaki, a Japanese hot pot dish, has nothing to do with the lyrics or the meaning of the song; the word served the purpose only because it was short, catchy, recognizably Japanese, and more familiar to most English speakers. A Newsweek columnist noted that the re-titling was like issuing Moon River in Japan under the title Beef Stew.

    About the song:

Ue o Muite Arukō (上を向いて歩こう?, literally [I] shall walk looking up) is a Japanese-language song that was performed by Japanese crooner Kyu Sakamoto, and written by lyricist Rokusuke Ei and composer Hachidai Nakamura. It is best known under the alternative title Sukiyaki in English-speaking parts of the world. The song reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the United States in 1963, and was the only Japanese-language song to do so. In total it sold over 13 million copies internationally. The original Kyu Sakamoto recording also went to number eighteen on the R&B chart.[3] In addition, the single spent five weeks at number one on the Middle of the Road charts. The recording was originally released in Japan by Toshiba in 1961. It topped the Popular Music Selling Record chart in the Japanese magazine Music Life for three months, and was ranked as the number one song of 1961 in Japan.
Well-known English-language cover versions include a 1981 cover under the title Sukiyaki by A Taste of Honey and a 1995 cover by 4 P.M.. There is also an English language version with altogether different lyrics by Jewel Akens under the title My First Lonely Night recorded in 1966. There are many other language versions of the song as well.

    About Kyu Sakamoto:

Kyu Sakamoto (坂本 九 Sakamoto Kyū?, born Hisashi Oshima (大島 九 Ōshima Hisashi?), 10 December 1941 -- 12 August 1985) was a Japanese singer and actor, best known outside of Japan for his international hit song Sukiyaki, which was sung in Japanese and sold over 13 million copies. It reached number one in the United States Billboard Hot 100 in June 1963.

  • Béla Bartók - Piano Concerto No. 3

    24:29

    - Composer: Béla Viktor János Bartók (25 March 1881 -- 26 September 1945)
    - Orchestra: Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra
    - Conductor: Ferenc Fricsay
    - Soloist: Géza Anda
    - Year of recording: 1959

Piano Concerto No. 3 in E major, Sz. 119, BB 127, written in 1945.

    00:00 - I. Allegretto
    07:22 - II. Adagio religioso
    17:38 - III. Allegro vivace

Bartók composed the Piano Concerto No. 3 in the United States. It differs radically from his first two piano concertos in its lack of overt virtuosity, its lack of conspicuous modernism, and its greater adherence to traditional models and forms. Even the Hungarian melodic and rhythmic elements, while still present, are not as pronounced as in his earlier concertos. The Third is a warmer and more melodic work with a more popular appeal that does not in any way compromise its musical integrity. Bartók wrote the concerto for his wife, Ditta Pasztory. He completed all but the final 17 bars, which were left in his musical shorthand. His friend Tibor Serly finished the work and it was premiered on 8 February 1946, by György Sándor with Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra.

    - The Allegretto is in sonata form with two subjects: a rhythmic opening theme and a lyrical second melody. These are developed and recapitulated in a more or less conventional fashion and the movement is rounded off with an elegiac coda of quiet beauty.
    - The Adagio religioso is one of Bartók's most heartfelt and heartwarming pieces, a three-part movement with the outer sections being a chorale for piano and orchestra with almost Bachian counterpoint and a central section of gloriously expansive Bartókian night music with bird calls and insect noises.
    - The Allegro vivace that follows attaca is a much more boisterous movement in the form of a rondo with two contrasting episodes and an extended coda. With its angular themes, its spiky rhythms, its contrapuntal developments, its aggressive orchestration with a large part for percussion, and its bravura piano writing, the Allegro vivace is by far the most Bartókian movement of the Third.

  • Béla Bartók - Concerto for Orchestra

    37:26

    - Composer: Béla Viktor János Bartók (25 March 1881 -- 26 September 1945)
    - Orchestra: Chicago Symphony Orchestra
    - Conductor: Fritz Reiner
    - Year of recording: 1955

Concerto for Orchestra, Sz. 116, BB 123, written in 1943.

00:00 - I. Introduzione. Andante non troppo -- Allegro vivace
10:03 - II. Giuoco delle coppie. Allegretto scherzando
16:05 - III. Elegia. Andante non troppo
24:05 - IV. Intermezzo interrotto. Allegretto
    28:21 - V. Finale. Presto

This is one of Bartók's best-known, most popular and most accessible works. The score is inscribed 15 August -- 8 October 1943. It was premiered on 1 December 1944, in Symphony Hall, Boston, by the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Serge Koussevitzky. It was a great success and has been regularly performed since. It is perhaps the best-known of a number of pieces that have the apparently contradictory title 'Concerto for Orchestra'. This is in contrast to the conventional concerto form, which features a solo instrument with orchestral accompaniment. Bartók said that he called the piece a concerto rather than a symphony because of the way each section of instruments is treated in a soloistic and virtuosic way.

The work was written in response to a commission from the Koussevitzky Foundation (run by the conductor Serge Koussevitzky) following Bartók's move to the United States from his native Hungary, which he had fled because of World War II. It has been speculated that Bartók's previous work, the String Quartet No. 6 from 1939 (uploaded on this channel), could well have been his last were it not for this commission, which sparked a small number of other compositions, including his Sonata for Solo Violin and Piano Concerto No. 3 (uploaded on this channel). Bartók revised the piece in February 1945, the biggest change coming in the last movement, where he wrote a longer ending. Both versions of the ending were published, and both versions are performed today.

Bartók makes extensive use of classical elements in the work; for instance, the first and fifth movements are in sonata-allegro form. The work combines elements of Western art music and eastern European folk music, especially that of Hungary, and it departs from traditional tonality, often using non-traditional modes and artificial scales. Bartók researched folk melodies, and their influence is felt throughout the work. For example, the second main theme of the first movement, as played by the first oboe, resembles a folk melody, with its narrow range and almost haphazard rhythm. The drone in the horns and strings also indicates folk influence. The Interrupted Intermezzo presents the first real carefree moments of the work, with its satiric treatment of the march theme from Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony No. 7 (uploaded on this channel), which Bartók heard in a radio broadcast. The Finale can be compared to the ending of Chopin's 2nd piano sonata, here with unbelievably fast passages in the strings where bits and pieces of earlier thematic material are restated and mixed together to give the listener an impression of what came before.

I want to apologize for the bad score quality, I tried to improve some sections with more contrast but this was not always sufficient...

  • Gustav Holst - The Planets

    48:46

    - Composer: Gustav Theodore (von) Holst (21 September 1874 -- 25 May 1934)
    - Orchestra: BBC Symphony Orchestra (with women's chorus)
    - Conductor: Sir Adrian Boult
    - Year of recording: 1945 (technical 'reconstruction' 1986)

The Planets, suite for orchestra & female chorus, Op. 32, H. 125, written between 1914-1916.

00:00 - 1. Mars, the Bringer of War
08:11 - 2. Venus, the Bringer of Peace
    15:38 - 3. Mercury, the Winged Messenger
19:26 - 4. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity
27:25 - 5. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age
    35:49 - 6. Uranus, the Magician
    42:15 - 7. Neptune, the Mystic

Vaughan Williams once described The Planets as the perfect equilibrium of the mystic and the melodic sides of the composer's nature. Shortly before its composition, Holst told a friend, As a rule I only study things that suggest music to me...Recently the character of each planet suggested lots to me. Typically known as a miniaturist, Holst expanded his reputation when he wrote this work of symphonic proportions for an impossibly large orchestra. Containing seven tone poems, the composition, which is comparable in size to those by Strauss, Mahler, and Schoenberg, has become known as his biggest and most important work. Accustomed to composing only for special purposes, Holst luxuriously allowed himself everything he wanted in this work.

The Planets was composed while Holst was employed as music master at a school in Dulwich and at St. Paul's Girls' School. It was the first and only work of its kind that he produced; between 1900-1914 he had written mainly choral pieces. Under the influence of Wagner, Strauss, Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky, the French composers, and additional Russians, Holst started to sketch No. 1: Mars, The Bringer of War just as the first World War began. Insistent on the stupidity of war, with all its horrors, the composer opened The Planets with this movement of relentless and brutal power. The entire work bears the feel of vulgarity, pleasantly accompanied by the richness and emotional warmth of humanity.

With the exception of Earth, each planet in our solar system has its own movement in Holst's composition:
    - Mars opens the work in a broad ABA form, each section rising to a climax, concluding with a crashing unison of the entire orchestra.
    - Venus follows, dissipating the brutality of the first movement, by peacefully presenting several figures and closing with a rich and calm amplification of its opening.
    - Mercury, which is in two keys in nearly every bar, leaves an impression of winged lightness and speed by rapidly swinging between chords.
    - In Jupiter the composer sought to embody the radiant happiness of a person who enjoys life, in an ABACABA form.
    - Saturn beautifully and peacefully brings old age, in a march that penetrates unlike any other work by the composer.
    - Although Holst did not hear Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice prior to composing Uranus, the two have remarkable similarities, particularly in the use of staccato bassoons. It is one of his supreme tuttis.
    - This atmospheric composition closes with the delicately scored Neptune. Meant to be a tuneless, expressionless, and shapeless pianissimo movement, the piece fades away to a close with a memorable wordless six-part female chorus.

The first complete public performance was conducted by Albert Coates on 15 November 1920. Prior to that, Adrian Boult led a semi-private rehearsal at the Queen's Hall Orchestra in 1918. The work is also available in an excellent version for two pianos.

  • Neil Young - Old Man & Heart Of Gold 1971

    9:09

BBC In Concert (Shepherd's Bush Studios, 23 February 1971)

Neil Percival Young (born November 12, 1945) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and musician. He began performing in a group covering Shadows instrumentals in Canada in 1960, before moving to California in 1966, where he co-founded the band Buffalo Springfield along with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, later joining Crosby, Stills & Nash as a fourth member in 1969. He forged a successful and acclaimed solo career, releasing his first album in 1968; his career has since spanned over 40 years and 35 studio albums, with a continual and uncompromising exploration of musical styles. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website describes Young as one of rock and roll's greatest songwriters and performers. He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame twice: first as a solo artist in 1995, and second as a member of Buffalo Springfield in 1997.

Young's work is characterized by his distinctive guitar work, deeply personal lyrics and signature alto or high tenor singing voice. Although he accompanies himself on several different instruments, including piano and harmonica, his idiosyncratic electric and clawhammer acoustic guitar playing are the defining characteristics of a varyingly ragged and melodic sound. While Young has experimented with differing music styles, including swing and electronic music throughout a varied career, his best known work usually falls into two primary styles: acoustic (folk and country rock) and electric (amplified hard rock, very often in collaboration with the band Crazy Horse). Young has also adopted elements from newer styles such as alternative rock and grunge. His influence on the latter caused some to dub him the Godfather of Grunge.

Young has directed (or co-directed) a number of films using the pseudonym Bernard Shakey, including Journey Through the Past (1973), Rust Never Sleeps (1979), Human Highway (1982), Greendale (2003), and CSNY/Déjà Vu (2008).

Young is an outspoken advocate for environmental issues and the welfare of small farmers, having co-founded in 1985 the benefit concert Farm Aid. In 1986, Young helped found The Bridge School, an educational organization for children with severe verbal and physical disabilities, and its annual supporting Bridge School Benefit concerts, together with his wife Pegi Young (née Morton). Young has three children: sons Zeke (born during his relationship with actress Carrie Snodgress) and Ben, who were diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and daughter Amber Jean who, like Young himself, has epilepsy. Young lives on his ranch in La Honda, California. Although he has lived in northern California since the 1970s and sings as frequently about U.S. themes and subjects as he does about his native country, he has retained his Canadian citizenship. On July 14, 2006, Young was awarded the Order of Manitoba, and on December 30, 2009, was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Old Man is a song written and performed by Neil Young on his 1972 album Harvest. It was written for the caretaker of the Northern California Broken Arrow Ranch, which Young purchased for $350,000 in 1970. The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the young man has, to some extent, the same needs as the old one. James Taylor played six-string banjo (tuned like a guitar) and sang on the song, and Linda Ronstadt also contributed vocals.

Heart Of Gold is also a song by Neil Young (also included on Harvest). It is so far Young's only U.S. #1 single. In Canada, it reached #1 on the RPM national singles chart for the first time on April 8, 1972, on which date Young held the top spot on both the singles and albums charts. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked it #297 on their list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Featuring backup vocals of James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, it is one of a series of soft acoustic pieces which were written partly as a result of a back injury. Unable to stand for long periods of time, Young could not play his electric guitar and so returned to his acoustic guitar, which he could play sitting down. He also played his harmonica during the three instrumental portions, including the Introduction to the song. In 2005, Heart Of Gold was named the third greatest Canadian song of all time on the CBC Radio One series 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version.

  • Tiger Rag by Benny Goodman Sextet

    3:07

The Legendary Slipped Disc-Sextet from 1945-1946.
This 78rpm-record is played on my portable His Master's Voice gramophone from 1938 (Serie 102c, with green leather case).
One of Benny Goodman's greatest combos was the sextet that he led in 1945. With Red Norvo on vibes, either Teddy Wilson or Mel Powell on piano and the humming bass solos of Slam Stewart, this unit had a lot of personality and yet allowed Goodman to operate throughout as the lead voice. This used to be a highly enjoyable band. Great swing music from Benny Goodman who is heard throughout at his best.

  • Kirsten Heiberg - Das bleibt doch unter uns

    1:35

A short song, composed by Kirsten Heiberg's husband Franz Grothe for the movie Rätsel der Nacht (Mystery of the night).
It starred Kirsten Heiberg and Lotte Koch and was shot in 1945 in Holland (produced by Berlin-Film). Alhough prinipal photography and synchronisation had ended it was not completed before the war ended...
The status of the movie is uncertain. According to some sources it was completed after the war and shown in the DDR around 1950, other sources say it was never completed. What is sure to survive, is this lovely song by Kirsten Heiberg.
