This 1990 Legato Records release of MVP (The Mark Varney Project), Truth In Shredding, offers a relentless, thrill-a-minute, Indiana Jones of instrumental music! The guitar work by two Guitar Player Magazine Reader's Poll winners is staggering! Those two winners happen to be none other than Allan Holdsworth (guitar, synthaxe) and Frank Gambale (rhythm guitar, lead guitar), who also produced the album of seven instrumentals - 99% of which was tracked live! Intense, mind-numbing, intimidating - all have been used to describe the music on Truth In Shredding - recommended for fans ranging from fusion to progressive to metal

  • Shawn Lane - Stratosphere II - US. Metal Vol. 4 - Shrapnel Records

    1:59

Released in 1984 this is the 1st commercial release of Shawn Lane by Mike Varney at Shrapnel Records.
Mike wrote a monthly New Talent column for Guitar Player magazine in 1982 and Shawn wrote to him and submitted a cassette tape.
Varney was so amazed that he called several people including Paul Gilbert and played it over the phone to them asking if they thought it was real or some kind of prank.
    It was real.
Later Mike invited Shawn out to California to record for this sampler.

Rocks is a Brecker Brothers cover from the M.V.P album Truth In Shredding.

This was the hardest solo transcription I've ever done but I wanted to do this in Allans memory as he was and is a great musical hero to me. He was a true genius!

P.S. Thanks to all the subscribers for sticking with me! I haven't been too active lately but I'll try my best to get new videos and maybe original material here this fall! Can't wait to share it with you good people :)

P.P.S. Also got the new Steinberger Spirit while I was in Japan. How cool is that thing?! :D

  • Centrifugal Funk - Tokyo Blue

    7:23

Recently reissued by Tone Center for 2004, this 1991 Legato Records release of MVP (The Mark Varney Project), Centrifugal Funk, displays a warning, Contains guitar performances of unparalleled speed, taste and virtuosity. Not for the faint of heart! The lead guitar performances spoken about in such glowing terms are turned in by none other than Brett Garsed (lead guitar), Shawn Lane (lead guitar) and Frank Gambale (lead guitar). Mark Varney and Jimmy Earl produced the album of eight instrumentals, two of which (Love Struck and So What, both clocking in at over eight minutes) feature all three gutiarists. The album also features Mike O'Neill on rhythm guitar, Steve Tavaglione on sax, Freddy Ravel on keyboards, Jimmy Earl on bass (he takes a solo on So What), Joey Heredia on drums and Kevin Ricard on percussion. T.J. Helmerich also makes an appearance on guitar, cuttiing the first solo on Love Struck. Mesmerizing, extreme, attention-grabbing, aggressive, thrilling - all have been used to describe the music on Centrifugal Funk - and, like it's companion record Truth In Shredding, recommended for fans ranging from fusion to progressive to jazz.

    Frank Gambale - Lead Guitar
    Brett Garsed - Lead Guitar
    Shawn Lane - Lead Guitar
    Mike O`Neill - Rhythm Guitar
T.J. Helmerich - Lead Guitar, Remastering
Jimmy Earl - Bass, Production, Arrangements
    Steve Tavaglione - Saxes, E.M.I.

Responding to really good feedback, I will be sharing more of these less formal videos, just working at my desk, recording with a phone. You will see some more searching/daring and of course mistakes... That's ok! :-) Today, going a little obscure, but sometimes I just have to go with my heart and the music I love. I first heard the tune Ana Maria on the Gambale/Holdsworth MVP recording, Truth in Shredding which still blows me away. Since then I have gone on to study the original and come up with a solo guitar arrangement, I hope you like it!

  • BERNTH // Diploma Concert Not Ethiopia/Odd Meter Solo

    3:16

This video shows some parts of my diploma concert - I ended my studies with honors at the Vienna Music Institute with this final exam.

The first song is called 'Not Ethiopia', originally performed by the Brecker Brothers. This version is inspired by the interpretation of Allan Holdsworth & Frank Gambale on 'Truth In Shredding' by the Mark Varney Project.
It features a completely improvised solo between the main themes.

The second solo part consists of different odd-meter riffs - it starts in 4/4, goes into 2/4, 5/4, 4/4 and then 7/8. After each repetition, the 5/4 riff is repeated one more time, resulting in a solo form like this:

    4/4 - 2/4 - 5/4 - 4/4 - 7/8
    4/4 - 2/4 - 5/4 - 5/4 - 4/4 - 7/8
    4/4 - 2/4 - 5/4 - 5/4 - 5/4 - 4/4 - 7/8
    4/4 - 2/4 - 5/4 - 5/4 - 5/4 - 5/4 - 4/4 - 7/8....
