  • The Lurkers Just thirteen

    2:16

The Lurkers were one of the best original punk bands, called the british Ramones because they were very melodic and powerful. In this song (originally published in 1979 as a single), they just took the essence of the Sixties female bands and switch the lyrics to a sarchastic and rough tale about a wild girl. The Lurkers are still touring with Arturo Bassick as the only one from the original line up.

Shadow is a brand new lyric video created to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of The Lurkers' debut single.

The Lurkers are releasing a 5 CD retrospective box set on July 28th 2017 via The Arkive:

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of The Lurkers debut single ‘Shadow’ (the first ever single on Beggars Banquet Records in 1977) a brand new lyric video has been created via Creative Commission ( The video was produced by Luis Hindman & animated by Sufiyaan Salam who say the idea for the concept was inspired by the artwork for the single. The design introduced a tone and colour scheme which was built upon with fast paced energetic lyrics which correspond with the tempo of the song

Pete Stride from The Lurkers described it as; a slightly deranged lyric video… and that’s just fine.”

This is the album version of ‘Shadow’ recorded by Stride/Esso/Wall/Moore

  • The Lurkers - Go Go Go

    4:04

The Lurkers were a late 1970s English punk rock group from West London, notable for being the first group ever on Beggars Banquet Records. Unlike most of their UK contemporaries, The Lurkers' influence lay far more with American punks The Ramones, than with British trailblazers The Sex Pistols and The Clash. Their heavily, and unabashedly derivative style, garnered them the affectionate tag of The British Ramones. Their debut single, 1977's Shadow/Love Story, was the first release on Beggars Banquet Records; their biggest hit was 1978's Ain't Got a Clue/Ooh, Ooh I Love You, reaching No. 45 on the UK singles chart . Their first two LP's were 1978's Fulham Fallout and 1979's God's Lonely Men, and they issued several more singles on Beggars Banquet, such as Heroin It's All Over in 1982, but by the close of the decade, punk rock had fallen out of fashion, and The Lurkers' straightforward take on the genre was not equipped to evolve. Owing to a lack of commercial success and the shifting musical climate, Beggars Banquet dropped The Lurkers, precipitating their break-up.
In the years since, they have reunited with various personnel numerous times, and continue to record and perform to this day. Their legacy, however, is primarily founded on their late '70s output. Shadow and Ain't Got a Clue in particular are cited by punk cognoscenti as classic examples of the style, and still show up from time to time on genre overview compilations.

The Lurkers formed late in 1976 and played their first gig at Uxbridge Technical College in the December supporting Screaming Lord Sutch to an audience of 10! The original line-up consisted of Pete Stride on Guitar, Pete Manic Esso Haynes on drums, Howard Wall on vocals and Nigel Moore on Bass. Despite not being the principal vocalist, Stride was the band's main songwriter. The band were one of the pioneering punk bands that played live in the first few months of the now-legendary Roxy Club in London. Nigel was swiftly replaced by Arturo Bassick.

    LYRICS:
Shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow
    My heart's in the shadow
    His heart's in the shadow
    My heart's in the shadow
    His heart's in the shadow

I heard you got a new boy
    He's got more than me
He's lots of fun to have around
    He's got lots of money

Shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow
    My heart's in the shadow
    His heart's in the shadow
    My heart's in the shadow
    His heart's in the shadow

Last night I saw you dancing
I had to watch you all the while
He whispered something in your ear
You both saw me and smiled

Shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow
    My heart's in the shadow
    His heart's in the shadow
    My heart's in the shadow
    His heart's in the shadow

Jenny said she'd lend me a gun
    She knows I'm not well
Then I'll shoot that boy in the legs
When he comes to ring your bell

Shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow
    My heart's in the shadow
    His heart's in the shadow
    My heart's in the shadow
    His heart's in the shadow

    2:15

THE LURKERS - 'Just Thirteen'/'Countdown' (Beggars Banquet BEG 14) January 1979

Sounding uncannily like The Ramones 'Just Thirteen' sees The Lurkers going for a pop punk sound. Some neat rhythm guitars and surf style backing vocals gives the tune a commercial edge but unfortunately the 45 just missed out on the charts back in '79.

The picture sleeve shows The Lurkers hanging around in some corridor, possibly the inside of their old school or it could be signing on day at the Dole Office..
