Human is a song recorded by British synthpop group ‘The Human League’, and released as the first single from their 1986 album Crash. The song was written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The song topped the US charts, becoming the band's second single to lead the Billboard Hot 100 following the 1981 single Don't You Want Me. It was also number 1 in Canada, reaching number 5 in Germany and number 8 in the band's home country, the United Kingdom.
The song's lyrics deal with the subject of human infidelity, in which a man and a woman after separation come together for an exchange of confessions in the relationship. In the first two lines, vocalist Philip Oakey apologizes to his partner for being unfaithful during his absence, and in the collapse of the song, the confession of words spoken by vocal backing Joanne Catherall reveals that she was also unfaithful. The song's title is derived from the chorus, in which both parties in the relationship explain that they are only human and born to make mistakes.
The video clip Human (where the shorter version of the song is played) was filmed in London in June 1986 in a studio using the Chroma key effect overlay. It is strongly styled to give a water reflection effect, in contrast to the song's theme of the song's stain of error, and a blue tint throughout. The video was conceived and directed by Andy Morahan.

Better HD deinterlaced version at Vimeo :
For some reason YouTube has issues with deinterlacing and timing. See link above for much higher quality.

The Human League : Retimed, re-edited video with new audio (from Matt Mix Amsterdam) and segments from the storyline of Don't You Want Me.

The lyrical story telling of Louise superficially seems to be a story about a chance encounter between a man and a woman on a bus who seem to be on the verge of a lover’s reconciliation. But like much of Oakey’s song writing, what seems ‘sugary sweet’ on the surface actually has a much darker subtext. Oakey points out that the story is actually about the original protagonists from Don’t You Want Me meeting up 4 years later. In Louise the man sees his lost love again and still cannot deal with reality. The anger that drove the earlier song has dissipated, and is replaced with a hopeful fantasy that his ex-lover is drawn to him all over again. So Louise is really about self-deception, delusion and eternal sadness.

Original video needed speeding up to match the new faster more up-tempo track from Matt Mix. All done in Final Cut Pro X. As the original video was shot in black and white the segments from Don't You Want Me have had colour removed too. The only colour shot in the video is the Human League's original style text.

    Hope you enjoy.

  • THE HUMAN LEAGUE - OPEN YOUR HEART

    4:00

    THE HUMAN LEAGUE
Are an English electronic new wave band formed in Sheffield in 1977. Dare (1981), the band's most popular album, yielded the single Don't You Want Me a No. 1 hit in the pop charts of UK, US and many other countries. After its UK success, their first single, Being Boiled was reissued and became a top ten hit at the beginning of 1982. The success of Don't You Want Me is seen as the beginning of the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the US. Other international hits include: Love Action, Open Your Heart, Mirror Man, Fascination, The Lebanon, Human (a US No. 1) and Tell Me When.

The only constant band member since 1977 is vocalist and songwriter Philip Oakey. Originally an avant-garde all-male synthesizer-based group, The Human League evolved into a commercially successful synthpop band under Oakey's leadership. Since 1987, the band has essentially been a trio of Oakey and long-serving female vocalists Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley (both of whom joined the ensemble in 1980), with various sidemen.

Since 1978, The Human League have released nine studio albums, four EPs, 30 singles and several compilation albums. They have had five albums and eight singles in the UK Top 10 and have sold more than 20 million records.

Genres: Electronic, synthpop, new wave, avant-garde

    :-)

    THANK YOU !

    .

The Human League Open Your Heart - Lyrics:

    And when it hurts you
    know they love to
    tell you
    How they warned you
    They say Don't be
    surprised at
    someone's lies
    They think they taunt you
But if you can stand the test
    You know your worst
    is better than their
    best
    And so you stand here
    with the years ahead
    Potentially calling
    With open heart or
    with a spirit dead
    You walk on
    Chorus :
    Lies the reason
    Faith or treason

    Playing a part
    End concealing
    Try revealing
    Open your heart
    Dare to feel
    Take the chance
    Make the deal
    Being an island
    Shying from trying
    Seems the easy way
    Such an easy way
    But there's no future
    without tears
    (Chorus)
But if you can stand the test
    You know your worst
    is better than their
    best
    (Chorus)
    Lies the reason
    Faith or treason
    Playing a part
    End concealing
    Try revealing
    Open your heart

    Visit my website:

This is my instrumental cover of a magnificent 1980s classic by the English band The Human League: Don't You Want Me of 1981.

It was a bit of a complex track to recreate for the amount of synth sounds, but I have to say I had a lot of fun creating these typical early 80s synth sounds (many of them with the classic square wave).

To recreate this track and to make the video, I was inspired by the official video version:

I used the CS1x sounds for many brasses of this song and tried to get as close as possible to the original with all the other sounds. There are some differences with the original track (you can hear them by listening to the separate left/right channels), especially with the more complex sounds to recreate (for example the rhythm synth on the right channel starting at 0:23). Moreover, I made the fade out of the track a little more gradual (lengthening it a few seconds longer than the original).

I hope you enjoy my tribute to this beautiful song :)

*** Please note: my videos are not live performances, but are music videos accompanying for the covers I create. The original graphics and music from which I take inspiration belong to their respective owners. I'm just a fan and I recreate animations/graphics/tracks only for personal passion and to pay homage to these great timeless classics ***
