    Album: (2014) The Hollies - Greatest Hits & Singles Volume 1 & 2 (4 CD Japan) Track 18
    Lyrics:
Editors: AVS Video Editor & XMedia Recode

    Saturday night I was downtown
    Working for the FBI
Sitting in a nest of bad men
    Whiskey bottles piling high

Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the DA man
When I heard this woman singing a song

A pair of 45's made me open my eyes
    My temperature started to rise
She was a long cool woman in a black dress
    Just a 5'9 beautiful tall
With just one look I was a bad mess
Cause that long cool woman had it all

I saw her heading to the table
Well a tall walking big black cat
When Charlie said I hope that you're able boy
Well I'm telling you she knows where it's at
Well then suddenly we heard the sirens
    And everybody started to run
    Jumping under doors and tables
Well I heard somebody shooting a gun

Well the DA was pumping my left hand
And she was holding my right
Well I told her, Don't get scared
    cause you're gonna be spared
    Well I'm gonna be forgiven
If I wanna spend my living
With a long cool woman in a black dress
    Just a 5'9 beautiful tall
With just one look I was a bad mess
Cause that long cool woman had it all
Had it all, had it all, had it all...

  • Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress - The Hollies

    3:15

Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress was a song by the rock and roll group, The Hollies, and released on February 1, 1972 as a single on the Parlophone Records label.

It was released soon after Allan Clarke, who was featured on lead guitar as well as lead vocal had left the group, from their album Distant Light (1970). As the group had just left EMI/Parlophone and signed with Polydor, they did not promote the song. However it became a No. 2 hit in the United States, their greatest ever singles success there. It was inspired and in the style of the rock and roll group Creedence Clearwater Revival, and on being reactivated by EMI in Britain a few months later, it reached No. 32.

The song is notable in that it features Clarke playing rhythm guitar, something he rarely did (Clarke came up with the song's signature guitar rhythm that opens the song).

  • The Hollies ~ Long Cool Woman 1972 Extended Meow Mix

    6:58

Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress) gets 'em up every time. It was a huge hit back in early 1972 when it peaked at #2 for two weeks, kept out of the top spot by Gilbert O'Sullivan's poignant Alone Again (Naturally). The Hollies got started with Allan Clarke and Graham Nash first meeting back in 1962, with Eric Haycock and Don Rathbone joining soon after. Tony Hicks became the fifth and final member when they were signed to EMI Records in the UK. During that time, they released classic Brit Pop like Bus Stop, Stop Stop Stop, On A Carousel and Carrie Anne. They shifted into the the 70's with Allan testifying to brotherhood of man with He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother. Soon, band members quit with Allan Clarke going solo in 1971. After the break up, One track from their final LP Distant Light was this rockin' dance tune that did not do well in the UK, and they expected it to tank in the US too. Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress) did just the opposite, the song proved irresistable to the Americans, who took it to their heart and never forgot about it. Clarke delivers a Grammy-worth effort along with his bandmates that sounds worlds away from the inner tensions that had already broken up the band. The success of this one led Clarke to reconsider and rejoined the band in 1973, recording The Air That I Breathe, a #6 ballad and another rock classic. Clark flew the coop again but returned, recording Russian Roulette with the band in 1976 and in 1983 Graham Nash's return reunited them and they had a #29 hit with their cover of 60's chestnut Stop! In The Name Of Love. I always think of Cher when I hear this one...cos she was the long cool woman when she wore a black dress.

Graham Nash played an important role in the early history of the Hollies, but after his departure in December 1968, the group achieved some of its greatest successes. After hearing Phil Everly's fine version of The Air That I Breathe written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood, the Hollies recorded the definitive version, engineered by Alan Parsons. Released as a single in January 1974 on Polydor Records, it reached #2 in the UK. In the US it was released on the Epic label and achieved #6. It can be found on the CD on Best of the Hollies: Air That I Breathe and The Hollies' Greatest Hits on EMI. It clearly demonstrates that Allan Clarke was one of the best lead singers of the era. Terry Sylvester's background singing and Tony Hicks' guitar add to the great sound. This sound recording is administered by SME & EMI. No copyright infringement is intended. • THE HOLLIES - HE AINT HEAVY, HES MY BROTHER - LEGENDADO

    4:41

(He ain't heavy, he is my brother) Não eram irmãos de sangue realmente.

  • The Hollies Carrie Anne

    3:07

Carrie Anne written by Allan Clarke, Graham Nash, & Tony Hicks and recorded by The Hollies on May 1,1967 was released as a single on Parlophone Records in the U.K. and Epic Records in the U.S., reaching #3 on the UK Singles Chart and #9 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. When Graham Nash and Tony Hicks, started writing this, Allan Clark had left the room. By the time he returned, the song was almost complete. In order to get his name on the writing credits, he quickly wrote the bridge You're so like a woman to me... Each verse was sung by a different member, Allan the first, Tony the second, and Graham the third. There happened to be a guy playing a steel drum on the street, and he was quickly recruited to play on the song. This version is from the 30th Anniversary Collection on Capitol and has the intro by the recording engineer at the beginning. This sound recording is administered by SME & EMI. 5:35

very underrated song by the Hollies.

    Lyrics:

    Take me home
    Sailing on with Romany wandering
To and fro on icy mornings
Feeling calm to have an old friend 'round
Feeling warm to see the wind blow down

    Take me home
to where the saints and children laughing
Tell the Dutchman ships are passing
Feeling safe to reach the harbor sound
Feeling warm to see the wind blow down

    Take me home
    Leave the galley sailors talking
Leave the bridge and captain's walking
Feeling naked on the covered ground
Feeling warm to see the wind blow down

    The wind blowed
    down in the moonless night
    the sea was dark
    the breeze was light
    Everyone's thoughts were their own
    Caught by the ocean thief
The bow hit on a coral reef
    Romany sank like a stone

    Down in the moonless night
    the sea was dark
    the breeze was light
    Everyone's thoughts were their own
    Caught by the ocean thief
The bow hit on a coral reef
    Romany sank like a stone

    Don' Let me Down

The sun is overshadowed by the presence of the moon
Night time has fallen she'll be comin' home soon
Leave the door wide open, ah, so she won't need a key
Lock it behind you baby draw the blinds so no-one can see
There's only one thing on my mind
Don't let don't let me down
Don't let don't let me down
My feelings are near the ground

Silence is golden, ah, for me there's just one choice
The music of your laughter, rippling of your voice
The freshness of the evergreen, ah, fades as if too shy
Can't compete with your beauty, couldn't if it tried
There's only one thing on my mind
Don't let, don't let me down
Don't let, don't let me down
My feelings are near the ground

Let's build something to climb on
Making the show a live one
No need for make-up let's be real
Give all in what your giving
    Making life worth living
Being alive's how you should feel
Oh and don't let, don't let me down
My feelings are near the ground

Don't want the sun to be shining
Raising his eyebrows at the moon
Saying I told you so she wouldn't show
    Well don't speak too soon
I hear her footsteps walking on the outer floor
Well it could be, I don't know, I don't know for sure
There's only one thing on my mind
Don't let, don't let me down
Don't let, don't let me down
My feelings are near the ground

Come on back, can't live without you
Come on back, (I need you, I need you, I) can't live without you
Come on back, (I want you, I want you, I)can't live without you
    Come on back, (c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, I) can't live without you

The Hollies are a British pop/rock group best known for their pioneering and distinctive three-part vocal harmony style. The Hollies became one of the leading British groups of the 1960s (231 weeks on the UK singles charts during the 1960s, the 9th highest of any artist of the decade) and into the mid 1970s. It was formed by Allan Clarke and Graham Nash in 1962 as a Merseybeat-type music group in Manchester, although some of the band members came from towns north of there. Graham Nash left the group in 1968 to form the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash.

They enjoyed considerable popularity in many countries (at least 60 singles or EPs and 26 albums charting somewhere in the world, spanning over five decades), although they did not achieve major US chart success until 1966 with Bus Stop. The Hollies had over 30 charting singles on the UK Singles Chart, and 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, with major hits on both sides of the Atlantic that included Just One Look, Look Through Any Window, I Can't Let Go, Bus Stop, Stop Stop Stop, On a Carousel, Carrie Anne, Jennifer Eccles, and later He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, and The Air That I Breathe.

They are one of the few British groups of the early 1960s, along with the Rolling Stones, that have never disbanded and continue to record and perform. In recognition of their achievements, the Hollies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

  • THE AIR THAT I BREATHE - THE HOLLIES -

    4:20

THE AIR THAT I BREATHE - THE HOLLIES - TRADUÇÃO

Me deixou tranquilo, quente e cansado

    lembrará do grande sucesso!)

(He ain't heavy, he is my brother)
