    Lyrics:
I've been misplaced in so many ways
Broken battlegrounds, hiding veils of delicate deceit
    Yet here I breathe
Teeth still gleam from holy water
While millions of lambs migrate to the slaughter
My head in a bag and my hands are bound to my feet
    And voices sing:

Were we erased like common thieves?
Tossed in a cell to feast with the fleas
All because we never had written a word.

What will I see, tonight in these eyes
And what will i know when the morning comes?
What will I see, tonight in these eyes
And what will I know when the morning comes?

Must we remind of exchanges existing so long ago?
Would we arrive at agreeable musings
    Sentimental or just confusing
We lost what we had but we took it back
Friends in the gutter, enjoy one another
Just give yourself to the dust and the dirt where you stand

What will I see, tonight in these eyes
And what will i know when the morning comes?
What will I see, tonight in these eyes
And what will I know when the morning comes?

I'm not who you think I am
And even if I thought you'd known
I never would have told you so
    And more alarming
I would have done the very same
Would have stole more than your name
Would have cursed and bought the world on your shoulders
I was in the wrong place
    At the right time

And what's the worst I'd see
By giving myself to the earth below me
Not knowing how far I'd fall, by casting away the ordinary
Just how long can I stay in illusions formed here long before me?
And how long can I breathe this stolen breath here underneath?

There's that subtle smile that did me in
    She moves...
An agony reminds where I've been
    She breathes
I'd never let this happen again.

    Where's your heart?
    Mimicking the patriarch

    She's naive...

    Article & photos:

Premier Guitar’s Chris Kies swooped into Nashville’s Cannery Ballroom right after soundcheck to see how Casey Crescenzo, Rob Parr, and Maxwell Tousseau reproduce their epic concept albums that will tell a narrative over six albums (five have been released this far).

Casey Crescenzo, the former member of The Receiving End of Sirens and current leader/guitarist of The Dear Hunter, is a part-time luthier when he’s not rocking onstage or locked in the studio. His fascination with building guitars can be drawn back to two things: his reluctance to cave on his ideas while collaborating with guitar companies (plus not wanting to pay over $4k) and his love for 3D CAD design work. He bought a few Fender Starcaster reissues (his preferred body shape) to reverse engineer the instrument and to further understand the finishing process. And his brand Cave and Canary was born.

Above is a Cave and Canary Solaris semi-hollow—his only touring guitar for this run and it’s the first body style that he drew. While he is a builder, two weeks before this tour he realized he didn’t currently have a guitar to play onstage, so this particular Solaris is a “parts” guitar from all the items laying around his shop. Some appointments include a Fender-style scale length, Mastery bridge and tailpiece, OX4 Humbuckers (PAF-style), and ’70s-style Schaller tuners.

Guitarist Rob Parr is an active user on the Offset Guitars forum and worked with another member and co-designed this contoured Jag-Stang offshoot that has come to be a Cave and Canary Auriga model. (Parr has said on the record—and in the video—that The Dear Hunter leader, Casey Crescenzo, did not make it mandatory for him to play a Cave and Canary instrument.) It has a short scale (24”), Mastery bridge and tailpiece, and is outfitted with custom-voiced McNelly Pickups that’s base point was the company’s gold-foil set. And from all his time spent playing on Jazzmasters, he incorporated those familiar switches—the knobs are master tone and volume. One of the knobs is a 3-way pickup selector and the other rocks between standard, mute, and a low-pass filter used for more rounded sounds. He strings up this bad boy with Ernie Ball Power Slinkys gauged .011–.054 and plays with Dunlop Tortex .73 mm picks.

    Lyrics:
It took a little longer than we hoped,
    but it was worth it.
    You know, it takes a village to raise a scheme;
to patch the holes of a mausoleum.

Well, we’re packing in the patronage
like it's a lotto, and everybody wins.
Now take a seat so the show can start,
and will you welcome these works of art…

    Isn’t she beautiful? No?
Maybe another one here could entertain…Yes?
We swear that every minute's worth the wait.

    Hey! It's a cry you can’t contain;
    a release you couldn’t estimate,
and the secret's safe as long as you pay.

It's so good to be so bad.
You can leave it when you walk away,
and pretend you’ve washed your hands of it.

Last call for the Sunday squaws,
and there's no room left for the hem and haw.
We’ll give a gift long overdue
and make a sultan out of you.

    That’s right; any troglodyte
can have a life in the party as a socialite,
Or if you’re looking to efface,
you can retire without a trace…

    Don’t you bother with doubt.

    Hey! It's a cry you can’t contain;
    a release you couldn’t estimate,
but the secret's safe as long as you pay.

It's so good to be so bad!
You can leave it when you walk away,
and pretend you’ve washed your hands of it.

Another candidate for giving her bruises.
    Another night that she’ll dissociate.
Another man who thinks the rules don’t apply to him.

Long was this road I’ve wandered,
but short did my temperance live.
Here I’ve helped him build a temple
to deify this czar of sin.

Now who to blame, but I for tying
these knots so well at my wrists.
The noose would surely find me
If I’m too wily… but what of the life I’d live?

The sale of a soul that falls
    as foolish as young Esau...
    It's better if I withdraw.

    Hey! It's a cry you can’t contain;
    a release you couldn’t estimate,
but the secret's safe as long as you pay.

It's so good to be so bad!
You can leave it when you walk away,
and pretend you’ve washed your hands of it.

Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, Canadian classic prog rock guitar teacher on YouTube. I grew up on classic 70s prog but abandoned it in the late 80s. Prog seemed dead and my orig. prog band was told by labels we were too prog. So i went onto grunge, pop, then folk, then strictly acoustic solo guitar etc...staying loyal to my staples like Yes and Rush, BUT 2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery that SO much great prog went on that I'd totally missed out on. So join me as I catch up on 30 years of prog!

In this video I react to The Dear Hunter, a progressive rock band. The songs are called Rebirth and the Old Haunt.

---+--+-Be sure to catch video #2 where i continue discussing this reaction experience in more depth:

Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, a classic prog-rock guitar teacher on YouTube. I grew up on 70s progressive music but abandoned the genre by the 90s because it was too 'hard-edged' for me. My all-originals prog band was rejected by record labels as too progressive' in the late 80s, so i went into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar).
2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery of 30 years of great music which I'd paid no attention to- until now!
I also will react to 70s and 80s prog that i overlooked, like gentle giant, camel, etc.

Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise. The boy pursues a brighter future, now reborn under a new identity.

    [Rebirth]

The Oracles approach Hunter once more, under his new identity, and tell him that he can't simply pretend to be someone else. His problems will still remain regardless. Hunter tries to deny this, and tells himself that things will be different now, and he won't make the mistakes he did before.

    [The Old Haunt, Waves]

On his travels back to the City, Hunter recounts everything he has been through. His mother, his failed love, the bitter war... He knows better now. He buries his ignorance and puts it all behind him.

[At the End of the Earth]

Hunter makes it back to the City, and is greeted by his half-brother's mother. She accepts him as her son without question, and mourns the loss of her husband. Hunter and The Mother begin to live together happily. He's reliving the feeling of being with Terri, but realizes that some day, she too will be gone.

    [Remembered]

Hunter returns to the Tree where Terri was buried, and tells her all about how far he's come. Even though she is gone, he still remains.

Years pass by as Hunter lives with the new Mother...

    [A Night on the Town]

Hunter is kidnapped by old friends of The Son. They take him back to town and throw a party, but Hunter doesn't know these people. They become suspicious of him not recognizing them, so Hunter plays it off and accepts them as friends.

The night goes on, they get more and more drunk, and Hunter begins to wonder why he's doing this. Why he's continuing on. Why he thought stealing The Son's identity would give him new life. He starts to think about just ending his life now.

His senses are beginning to fail him, and he crosses paths with someone who he thinks is Ms. Leading. His mind is going blank. She takes him to her room. He blacks out...

[Is There Anybody Here?, The Squeaky Wheel]

Hunter is regaining consciousness, but feels completely lost. Having never been drunk before, this is a new feeling to him. He feels as though he's in the wrong body.

He realizes he's with a woman that is not Ms. Leading at all. It's the fiancee of The Son. It's Sunday morning, and they are getting ready for church. All the while, she's furious at how he left her for so long, and didn't even come to see her for YEARS after the war ended. She begins to realize this isn't even the same man. They decide to see how this relationship will work anyway.

[The Bitter Suite I, II, & III]

They arrive at the Church, and Hunter recognizes the priest from when he worked in The Dime, which has been closed because of the war. He speaks against The Priest knowing that he's The Pimp, but the mass ignores him, and the sermon begins. The Priest tells the people that the only way to salvation is through him money.

The sermon ends, and Hunter is approached by The Priest, applauded as a returning war hero. He pretends to not know who The Priest really is, and pretends to not be Hunter. The Priest suggests that Hunter run for mayor, to fix the corruption in the City. Hunter agrees, seeing that this is the perfect way to get rid of The Pimp and The Priest.

[King of Swords, If All Goes Well]

Hunter runs for and becomes mayor of The City. He tells himself that he won't let this power get to his head, but deep down he admits to himself that he won't be able to do that. He gains the respect of the people, and he tells them he will lead them to live in a better city.

    [The Line]

Hunter thinks about where he is now in life, how well things are going now that he's a new person, and compares it to his life before. He decides that for this plan to work, he needs to fully detach himself from his old identity.

    [Wait]

Ms. Leading recognizes the new mayor, and knows it's Hunter. They apologize to each other, with Hunter realizing that what he did was unnecessary.

They begin to live a happy life together in secret.

    [Ouroboros]

The Priest confronts Hunter in private, blackmailing him. The Priest has known all along that it was Hunter, and not The Son returning from battle. If Hunter tries to do anything that doesn't support The Church and The Dime, then all of his lies will be exposed to the masses, leading to his ultimate downfall.

Hunter realizes The Oracles were right all along. He should never have left The Lake, and he should have gone back while he had the chance to. Hunter is stuck under The Priest's thumb, bent to his will.

A long walk home, riddled with regret
Uncommonly comfortable, but still I believe
That in time I think I'll see just what's been weighing down on me
An unearthy void collapsed, exposing what was trapped
    To release this serendipitous discern

Belated conversation saturate anticipation for the answers that simply won't come

We either learn to live a lie

    And after all this suffering
I could lie here for good
    With a mind on fire
I try and stand my ground

    Illuminate and I will follow...

    Amongst the stone and smoke
    Rising above it all
    Broken, but not beyond repair
    See how this soul fairs

    From after all this suffering

Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional. The beginning of the boy's downfall.

    [Regress]

One last time, Hunter is approached by the Oracles. He's told that he's lost his way, and nothing good will come of this. They say the only thing he can find relief in from now is that he will die soon.

    [The Moon / Awake, Cascade]

Hunter is at this point addicted to opium, and sits in his den while he thinks about his mistakes. He realizes he has no control of where his life is going now. Hallucinations form of his younger self, and judges the man that he's now become. He realizes he's become the very thing he was trying to bring down; a two-faced manipulative man controlling the City. Yet, he tries to find a way to justify all he's done.

[The Most Cursed of Hands, Who Am I]

At the Church, The Priest begins to tell a parable to the crowd, but Hunter begins to realize The Priest is really only talking to him. The story tells of The Devil playing a game of poker with a gambler. The Devil puts his own soul into the pot, and intentionally loses the game. The gambler takes The Devil's souls, and ends up becoming The Devil himself, setting the beast free. Hunter connects himself and The Priest to the characters in the story.

    [The Revival]

The Dime has reopened, by the hand of the mayor, forced under The Pimp's thumb. The Pimp tempts everyone to come back in, loudly advertising the reopening of The Dime. Hunter watches, disgusted at what he's done, what he's become, and how there's nothing he can do.

    [Melpomene]

Hunter writes a love letter to Ms. Leading, living a double life in love with her, but marrying The Fiancee.

[Mr. Usher On His Way To Town, The Haves Have Naught]

A politician by the name of Mr. Usher comes to town after hearing the news that a new mayor has been elected. Mr. Usher approaches Hunter, and they have a conversation about the state of the people in the City. Usher finds no value in lower lives, and tries to convince Hunter that he can use the peasants for his own good. Hunter tries his best to show Usher the beauty in all of the people living here, regardless of their status. Usher leaves, and Hunter realizes that this man is far worse than The Pimp and The Priest.

    [Light]

Hunter and The Fiancee have a child. After seeing what kind of man Usher is, and the danger he presents to everyone, Hunter takes The Fiancee and their child to live in a cottage by the Lake, and tells his son never to walk beyond the Tree.

    [Gloria]

Hunter begins to hallucinate through opium once again. He hates himself and everything he's being forced to do, but unknown voices call out to him and tell him to press on, that great glory will come from the pain.

    [The Flame Is Gone]

Mr. Usher approaches The Pimp in private. He tries to convince The Pimp to murder someone that he knows he's always wanted out of the way. The Pimp is against it, but Usher is incredibly persuasive, and changes The Pimp's mind. Usher tells The Pimp you will return. But as he leaves, he says again, quietly under his breath, you won't return.

    [The Fire Remains]

Hunter discovers the bloodied corpse of Ms. Leading in The Church. He sets fire to the building, giving his love a baptism of fire, a battesimo del fuoco. As the building burns to the ground, Hunter gives up on his new identity. He was born Hunter, and he always has been Hunter. There's no longer any point in pretending to be The Son, a returning war hero.

    [The March]

The Pimp stands outside the burning church as people gather, and gets everyone's attention. He then exposes all of Hunter's lies and manipulations, even twisting some things to sound even worse, as if Hunter is the one that killed The Son. The Pimp then leads the mob with torches and stones to find Hunter.

    [Blood]

The Pimp alone finds Hunter, and tries to talk some sense into the boy. Hunter comes clean, admits all his wrongs, and that he's no longer living a second identity. Hunter then takes the knife he was given by Terri, and murders The Pimp and The Priest.

    [A Beginning]

Hunter has nothing left now. His mother, brother, and lover are all gone. His fiancee and child have left. All that waits for him is death, no matter which way he tries to go. He sees an apparition of the people he loved, one last time, and begs their forgiveness. With no response, he throws himself into the River to drown, hoping that maybe he will get to see them in the afterlife.

    3:41

    Artist: The Dear Hunter
Song: He Said He Had a Story
Album: Act III: Life and Death

There was a silver circle sign, and she was standing at the door
We pressed our way right through the crowd, our pace was quickened to her floor
There was a single fading light, and there was silk all on the walls
She had a lot of love to give, I was prepared to take it all

But what did she do next?

She had disrobed, and she was waiting on the floor
She asked me what it was I want, I thought that I wanted it all

    What did you say?

I said Stand up and move your body to the bed.
She quickly stood and slowly turned, and here's exactly what she said:

Please be soft and sweet to me,
this life has not been good you see
it's hard with such a history buried in misery.

And what did you do next?

I broke a smile, reminding that I paid her well.
Her lips returned, and then I felt her hands unbuckling my belt.

    So was it good?

Oh, it felt like heaven, but I'm sure she was in hell
I made it clear I'd get my money's worth out of the good she sells

Break and bind yourself to me
Deliver what you've sold you see that
I will only take from you, and use it up
    I'll use you up

    What was your name?

Break and bind yourself to me
Deliver what you've sold you see that
I will only take from you to use it up
    I'll use you up

    What was your name?

    Lyrics:
Son, your father’s not all good.
Still, I love you more than I thought I could.

And when the menace in my mind
finds me, I simply look to your eyes.

Boy, someday I hope I do
See the man you will grow into,
and when you heart’s in disarray,
know that your father too has made mistakes.

Son, your fathers lost his head.
Still, I mean every word that I’ve said.

Even though the truth can truly cut-
here in this confessional with my blood.

Boy, someday I hope I do
See the man you will grow into,
and when you heart’s in disarray,
know that your father too has made mistakes.

I’ve been cruel to the ones who have stayed by my side,
and foolish enough to believe in my pride,
but vanity never could keep me from caring for you.

    I’ve strayed too far away from the trees and the lake;
the innocent road that I choose not to take.
    But still, I can bring you to bathe in the river;
to wash out the world long before your heart’s withered away.

Boy, someday I hope I do
See the man you will grow into,
and when you heart’s in disarray,
know that your father too has made mistakes.

    Lyrics:
The silence dominates, divining resolutions from my hands
    Lines drawn in the sand
But my volition's wry, my temperance twisted, faced with failing light
    Nothing in my sight

If I fall into the ocean, send my soul into the sea
Will these reflections trouble me? Will I dream my final dream?

I sensed this silhouette who's standing vigil growing very sore
    Just one moment more
Before I close the curtain, fate uncertain, spirit to the dark
    Endlessly apart

Can I fall into the ocean, send my soul into the sea?
No distant echoes haunting me, no further phantoms will I see
    This silence held eternally

But what if the silence is broken by the ones you've loved
Incredibly present, with a heavenly breath to wake you up
With nothing left to poison, a portrait of who I've become
Only elation remains, protecting us from this neverending night

Dear apparition, while my senses last
Is absolution far too much to ask?
Will you forgive a truly troubled past?
The silver lining still remains, the sights I've left to see
So trust that with this end, a new beginning's waiting patiently
