The Church is an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1980. Initially associated with new wave and the neo-psychedelic sound of the mid 1980s, their music later became more reminiscent of progressive rock, featuring long instrumental jams and complex guitar interplay. Founding members are Steve Kilbey on lead vocals and bass guitar, and Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper on guitars, while Tim Powles has played on drums since 1994. Three of the members recorded material as The Refo:mation in 1997.

The Church's debut album, Of Skins and Heart (1981), delivered their first radio hit The Unguarded Moment. They were signed to major labels in Australia, Europe and the United States. However, the US label was dissatisfied with their second album and dropped the band without releasing it. This put a dent in their international success, but they returned to the charts in 1988, with the album Starfish and the US Top 40 hit Under the Milky Way. Subsequent commercial success proved elusive, however, and the band weathered several line-up changes in the early 1990s. The last decade has seen them settle on their current line-up. On 27 October 2010, The Church were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in Sydney.

    LYRICS:

Let the Church be the Church
    Let the people rejoice
    For we've settled the question
    We've made our choice
Let the anthems ring out, songs of victory swell
For the church triumphant, is alive and well

You know, this ship's been through battles before
The storms and the tempests and all the rocks on the shore
Though the hull may be battered
    Inside it's safe and dry
It's gonna carry its cargo to the port in the sky

God has always had a people.
Many a foolish conqueror has made the mistake of thinking that because he had forced the church of Jesus Christ out of site, he had stilled its voice and snuffed out its life, but God has always had a people.
The powerful current of a rushing river is not diminished because it's forced to flow underground.
Now the purest water is the stream that burst crystal clear into the sunlight after it has forced its way through solid rock.
There have been those who like Simon The Magician sought to barter on the open market that power which cannot be bought or sold, but God has always had a people.
Men who could not be bought and women who were beyond purchase.
God has always had a people.
There have been times of affluence and prosperity when the church's message has been nearly deluded into oblivion by those who sought to make it socially attractive, neatly organized, financially profitable, but God has always had a people.
Yes it's been gold platted, draped in purple and encrusted with jewels.
It has been misrepresented, ridiculed, lauded and scorned but God has always had a people.
And these followers of Jesus Christ have been, according to the whim of the times, elevated sacred leaders and modern heretics.
Yet through it all, their march is on that powerful army of the meek.
God's chosen people who cannot be bought, blabbered, murdered or stilled.
On through the ages they march, the church!
    God's church triumphant!

Listen child of God, its alive.
Discouraged pastor, it's his church and it's still alive.
Lonely missionary, sow that seed with confidence.
    The church is still alive.
Old saint, you're not alone or forgotten.
    The church is still alive.
Its alive my broken-hearted friend, it's still alive.
Busy mothers, just keep trusting in Jesus, the church is alive.
You're not alone out there, just keep looking to Jesus.
    The church is alive.
And faithful fathers, there's rest in the Lord.
    God's church is still alive.
So family of God lift your hands, lift your hands and praise the Lord.
The church, God's church triumphant is alive, it's alive my friends.
    Alive and well

    5:01

The Church - Under The Milky Way

Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty,
Sound of their breath fades with the light.
I think about the loveless fascination,
    Under the milky way tonight.

Lower the curtain down in memphis,
Lower the curtain down all right.
I got no time for private consultation,
    Under the milky way tonight.

Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.
Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.

    And its something quite peculiar,
    Something thats shimmering and white.
Leads you here despite your destination,
    Under the milky way tonight

Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.
Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.

    Under the milky way tonight.

The Church performing Reptile live at Enmore Theatre in Sydney on 17 December 2011

On their 30th Anniversary the church continue to redefine what it is to be a band, evolving without compromise into one of the world's most acknowledged rock groups. Guiding the band though the '80s and '90s with a combination of chemistry, talent and a desire for excellence, their unique and distinctive guitar sounds and thought-provoking lyrics have succeeded in inspiring both the audience and the critics' imagination the world over. In recent years the band have continued on their creative trajectory and with their induction into the 2010 ARIA Hall Of Fame, they have been able to reflect on their huge body of work as they continue to be prolific and pursue their artistic aspirations both live and in the studio.

From the debut album Of Skins and Heart (including their first hit The Unguarded Moment) to the artistically and commercially successful Starfish, charting high in both Australia and the USA, (featuring the ubiquitous Under The Milky Way and guitar driven Reptile), through to 2009′s lush, organic masterpiece Untitled #23, lead vocalist and bassist Steve Kilbey, guitarists Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper and drummer Tim Powles (now an active member of the band for 17 years), have continued as the church through three whole decades to pleasure their fans with a unerring sense of space, melody, beat driven prose and sonic charm.

Rolling Stone Australia gave their last album Untitled #23 an unprecedented 5 star review -- a stunningly ambitious album of shimmering rock. In the USA Rolling Stone commented, the church have truly reaffirmed themselves as one of the world's leading melodic art-rock bands, regarded by critics as a powerful, progressive force in rock music, playing the most ethereal sounds this side of paradise and have remained one of the world's most innovative and enigmatic groups justifying praises from the press including Best guitar band on Earth, Sonic perfection, Sounds that caress the senses. A masterpiece of stealth.

    LYRICS:

There's a church in the valley by the wildwood
No lovelier place in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the vale

    (Oh, come, come, come, come)
Come to the church by the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale

How sweet on a clear Sabbath morning
To listen to the clear ringing bells
Its tones so sweetly are calling
Oh come to the church in the vale

There, close by the church in the valley
Lies one that I loved so well
She sleeps, sweetly sleeps, 'neath the willow
Disturb not her rest in the vale

There, close by the side of that loved one
'Neath the tree where the wild flowers bloom
When farewell hymns shall be chanted
I shall rest by her side in the tomb

    If you know this band at all, it's probably through their 1988 album 'Starfish';

in particular, probably the song 'Under The Milky Way'.

And if you know little or nothing of this band,
then tuck a napkin under that chin and dig in. - Dwight Lewis

The Church are an Australian psychedelic rock band formed in Sydney in 1980. Initially associated with new wave, neo-psychedelia and indie rock, their music later came to feature slower tempos and surreal soundscapes reminiscent of dream pop and post-rock. Glenn A. Baker has written that From the release of the 'She Never Said' single in November 1980, this unique Sydney-originated entity has purveyed a distinctive, ethereal, psychedelic-tinged sound which has alternatively found favour and disfavor in Australia. The Los Angeles Times has described the band's music as dense, shimmering, exquisite guitar pop.

The founding members were Steve Kilbey on lead vocals and bass guitar, Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper on guitars and Nick Ward on drums. Ward only played on their debut album, and the band's drummer for the rest of the 1980s was Richard Ploog. Jay Dee Daugherty (ex-Patti Smith Group) played drums from 1990 to 1993, followed by timEbandit Tim Powles (ex-The Venetians) who remains with them to the present day. Koppes left the band from 1992 to 1997, and Willson-Piper left in 2013. He was replaced by Ian Haug, formerly of Powderfinger. Kilbey, Koppes and Powles also recorded together as The Refo:mation in 1997.

The Church's debut album, Of Skins and Heart (1981), delivered their first radio hit, The Unguarded Moment, and they were signed to major labels in Australia, Europe and the United States. However, the US label was dissatisfied with their second album and dropped the band without releasing it. This put a dent in their international success, but they returned to the charts in 1988 with the album Starfish and the US Top 40 hit Under the Milky Way. Subsequent mainstream success has proved elusive, but the band retains a large international cult following and were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in Sydney in 2011. The Church continue to tour and record, releasing their 24th studio album, Further/Deeper, in October 2014.

    1:30:28

    The Church Live @ Emo's. SXSW 2015.

The Church is a unique band that finds itself cherished as a bona fide legend in the ARIA Hall of Fame while remaining a virtual enigma to the world that knows its name. But maybe that's no more remarkable than the mystery that continues to unfold within its own ranks.

the church's accidental signature tune, Under The Milky Way, is like a lighthouse on the brink of a continent forever to be discovered: 25 albums over 35 years and countless diversions that have almost destroyed them a dozen times, yet always reaffirm a mutual commitment to an uncompromising and unparalleled act of creation.

At this stage of the journey, FURTHER/ DEEPER seems both unimaginable and the only option on their endless quest from chaos to resolution. It's an album of breathtaking new vistas and intense emotions, of sinister black caskets and gorgeous caverns of light, a work born of immense struggle and effortless expression.

SXSW’s original goal was to create an event that would act as a tool for creative people and the companies they work with to develop their careers, to bring together people from a wide area to meet and share ideas. That continues to be the goal today whether it is music, film or interactive technologies.

  • Metal Church Gods of Wrath HD2005 Live Wacken.

    6:33

Metal Church is an American heavy metal band, they originally formed in Seattle, Washington as Shrapnel in 1980. Their first album was released in 1984, and the band's most recent work, This Present Wasteland, was released in 2008.Metal Church was formed when the thrash metal genre was still evolving. Lyrically, the band's themes are usually dark, with early topics such as conflict and fear expanding to philosophical and social commentary later on. After releasing five full-length albums and touring extensively throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Metal Church disbanded in 1994, but decided to re-form four years later. Having endured numerous lineup changes since, they worked with their third vocalist, and have released four more studio albums and one live album. On July 7, 2009 it was announced on the band's official website that they have again disbanded.

Metal Church was formed in 1980 under the name Shrapnel with Mike Murphy on vocals, Kirk Arrington on drums, Craig Wells and Kurdt Vanderhoof on guitars, and Duke Erickson on bass. Mike Murphy quit, however, citing personal and creative differences. He was replaced by David Wayne.

In 1982, the band released a demo tape, titled Four Hymns. It contained the songs Battalions, Deathwish, Gods of Wrath, and The Brave. Though the demo has been long out-of-print, the songs are freely available from the band's web site.

In 1984, Metal Church released their self-titled debut album, which included three songs from the Four Hymns demo and a cover of Deep Purple's Highway Star. The band had to sell 70,000 copies of the album on their own before being signed to Elektra. According to David Wayne, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich of Metallica urged Elektra to sign the band before some other label did.

By the time Metal Church released their second studio album, The Dark, in 1986, they were touring with high-profile acts like Metallica. The Dark was a commercial success, helped by the fact that the band's first music video, featuring the song Watch the Children Pray, received frequent airplay on MTV. Unfortunately, these positive developments were followed by serious problems within the band, which resulted in a change in lineup.

In 1988, the band replaced Wayne with former Heretic singer Mike Howe and released their studio album, Blessing In Disguise, a year later. John Marshall took over Vanderhoof's position on guitar, who now contributed mainly as a songwriter. Ironically, after being replaced by Heretic's former singer, David Wayne recruited the remaining members of Heretic to form Reverend. It would be a decade before David Wayne worked with Metal Church again.

RONNY MUNROE is an American heavy metal singer, most noted as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band METAL CHURCH from 2004 until the band broke up in 2009. His second tenure with the band lasted from 2012 when the group reunited until 2014, where he left to pursue other interests. He also had a brief stint as the vocalist for Lillian Axe. He was also the lead singer of progressive rock band Presto Ballet. In October 2011 Munroe joined the Trans-Siberian Orchestra,as a vocalist.

    LYRICS:

    1. Oh! I'd like to go back to that Old Country Church,
And to hear the songs of praise. (songs of praise)
How the people would sing, it would make the Heavens ring,
At that Old (at that Old) Country Church.
    CHORUS 1:

Shall we gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river.
Gather with the saints at the river that flows by the throne of God.

    2. Oh, I'll never forget at that Old Country Church,
how the glory of the Lord came down. (It came down)
And the children would smile, as they shouted down the aisle,
Of that Old (of that Old) Country Church.

    CHORUS 2:

In the sweet by and by, we shall meet on that beautiful shore.
In the sweet by and by, we shall meet on that beautiful shore.

    3. Then on Sunday to see all my friends so dear to me
At that Old Country Church. (Country Church)
When it came time for prayer, ev'rybody would be there
At that Old (at that Old) Country Church.

    CHORUS 3:

Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms.
Leaning, leaning, leaning on the Everlasting Arms.

    4. Now the years have gone by and so many have died,
At that Old--- Country Church (Country Church)
But they're on the other shore, and they'll sing forevermore,
As they did at that Old Country Church.

    CHORUS 4:

I'm redeemed by love divine. Glory, glory, Christ is mine.
All to Him I now resign. I have been redeemed.

This is Radiance, by The Church. It is not the album version (the album being: After Everything Now This). I'm not sure where or how I got this slightly different version. Both the original album version and this version are lovely. David Duchow provides the video treat to accompany these heavenly sounds.

  • Fall Away

    4:54

ok Church fans, this here's a rarity: Fall Away is the tune, an unreleased track from the Of Skins and Heart album sessions, so I am told. Someone sent me this really low quality mp3 way back when. What a great song, by The Church, the best rock and roll band of all time, to which I have attached a kaleidoscopic and tiled cornucopia of train video imagery. Epileptic alert: there is a segment of this video which contains rapid flashing colours (3:43 to 3:57).

There have been [?] who like Simon The Magician sought to barter on the open market that power which cannot be bought or sold, but God has always had a people.

You're not alone out there [?], just keep looking to Jesus. The church is alive. And faithful fathers, there's rest in the Lord. God's church is still alive. So family of God lift your hands, lift your hands and praise the Lord. The church, God's church triumphant is alive, it's alive my friends. Alive and well
