    Swamp Thing (The Chameleons)

Notes by Mark - Definitely one of my favourites from everything we did. I'd had the chords of the chorus, which Dave had come up with, running around my head for some time and knew, when the time came, what I'd sing to it. John and Reg meanwhile, had jammed out what were to be the verses and, not knowing what to call it, had named it 'Swamp'. When it came to working it out I started singing over it and then suggested we switch to the chorus idea. It was one of the quickest songs we ever did. It was recorded some months earlier in London and remixed for the album. I was dissatisfied with my own voice and it was suggested I stop smoking for a couple of days. I did and didn't light up again for about a year. Lyrically I regard it as a true prophesy.

I can already hear your tune
    Calling me across the room
When the world and his wife
    Are on my back again
    Not enough pleasure
    Too much pain

When the world is too much with me
    Please leave, just go away
Before I lose my mind completely
    Please leave, just go now
    In the sidestreet something's moving
    Look around, look around
    All around you
    Walls are tumbling down
    Stop staring at the ground

I can practically see your face
And another revolutionary falls from grace
Hear the thunder in your brain
    Not enough sunshine
    Too much rain

When the light of life has gone
    No change for the meter
Then the king of spivs will come
    Selling blood by the litre
    When nothing's sacred anymore
When the demon's knocking on your door
You'll still be staring down at the floor

Not too many hours from this hour
    So long?
    The storm comes
Or is it just another shower?

    Picking up the pieces
Half alive in a nine 'til five
    Vacant eyes
    Is it any wonder?
Primal scream at the TV screen
    Close your eyes

Now the world is too much with me
    Please leave, just go away
Before I lose my mind completely
    Just leave, please go now
    Now nothing's sacred anymore
When the demon's breaking down your door
You'll still be staring down at the floor

Not too many hours from this hour
    So long?
    Now the storm has come
Or is it just another shower?

    Lyrics:

    It's just coincidence
Well, you can talk that way
But I have to say I don't believe in it
It was a chill of chance,
I decided to dance the days away

And I wasn't worried at all
    Sneaking through the back door
No, I wasn't worried at all
Dreams are what you live for

Waiting for the light to turn green
    Carry me home
To the kindest eyes that I've ever seen
    Carry me home
Well, can you tell me how will it be now?
    How will it be?
Can you tell me, how will it be now?
    How will it be?

    Well we were younger then,
And the days were long and slow
    But were we wiser then?
    I couldn't say, I wouldn't know

But I wasn't worried at all
I had someone to run to
And I wasn't worried at all
I knew which way the wind blew

Counting out the chaos and gloom
    Carry me home
And I watched the ceiling spin round the room
    Carry me home
Well, can you tell me, how will it be now?
    How will it be?
Can you tell me, how will it be now?
    How will it be?

In the real world, how will it be?
In a cold world, how will it be?
In a lonely world, how will it be?
Will the ghosts just stop following me?

No, now drawn into the sun
    He was the only one

In the real world, how will it be?
In a cold, cold world, how will it be?
Beck and call, beg and crawl, how will it be?
Will the ghosts just stop following me?

No, now drawn into the sun
    He was the only one

    And so I'll remember you,
I'll remember the days and the thousands of ways you pulled me through,
And dream of all the things you've seen,
Of all the faces and all of the places you have been,
Now you have no phone and you have no name and you have no number,
And it comes to an end in the blink of an eye and it makes me wonder...

  • The Chameleons - Dont Fall

    4:07

    Don't Fall
    Don't Fall

Alone in a room I've been in once before
    Shapes in the hall
    I'm running for the door
    I'm out on the edge
    But I'm not defeated yet
I hear my name above everything else
    Mark! Mark!
    Above everything else
    Don't fall !
    Don't fall !

    It's a freak out
    Nothing's familiar
Nothing seems to fit into the scheme of things
Seeing faces where there shouldn't be faces
No-one's ever certain what tomorrow brings
    So don't fall my friend
    All nightmares have an end

    Hiding inside
    A room that's running red
    The place to be
    Exists only in your head
    And the focus of fear
In the creases of a dress
    A female dress
How did I come to be drowning in this mess
    This fucking mess
    Don't fall
    Don't fall

    It's a freak out
    Nothing's familiar
Nothing seems to fit into the scheme of things
Seeing faces where there shouldn't be faces
No-one's ever certain what tomorrow brings
    Don't fall

I know your back's against the wall
    But this roaring silence
    Won't devour us all
    Don't fall

    Lyrics:
    Up the Down Escalator
    The Chameleons
I'm gazing up at the faces staring blankly at me
I suppose it's just a sign of the times.
They tell me that tomorrow will never arrive
But I've seen it end a million times.
I lost my direction while dodging the flak
Give me a hint or something
If I could freeze time at the flick of a switch
    I wouldn't hesitate
    No!
There must be something wrong boys.
    Obnoxious action, obnoxious results
From teachers who refuse to be taught.
Distorted pictures and dizzy dizzy people
Rush by me at the speed of though.
And sit at their tables and throw us the scraps
For Christs' sake leave us something
Now they can erase us at the flick of a switch
    How long will it take
    Now!
There must be something wrong boys
    They're dragging me down.
    Eden, there's no Eden, anyway.
They sit at their tables and throw us the scraps
For Christs' sake leave us something
Now they can erase you at the flick of a switch
How much longer must we wait
    Now!
There must be something wrong boys
    They're dragging me down
You either swim or you drown.

Formed in Middleton near Manchester, England in 1981 The Chameleons never quite achieved the success of many of their contemporaries but are arguably just as important. Today the band still has a huge international fan base and it's not surprising. The distinct often melancholy sound is at once abrasive and melodic; their live performances both mesmerising and highly emotional; their stage presence larger than life. In many ways the Chameleons epitomise the northern post punk movement of the eighties, capturing the mood of those bleak times when many industries were in terminal decline and anywhere north of Watford was considered a wasteland. The Chameleons channelled dissolution in to music like nobody else, but somehow managed to create a sound that was uplifting, almost hymn-like.

Live at Camden was shot in 1985 and became a best selling video on its release in the mid eighties. It features a superb performance and includes many of the bands most popular numbers.

    from Wikipedia:

The Chameleons (called The Chameleons UK on some American releases) were a dream pop/post-punk band that formed in Middleton, in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England in 1981 (see 1981 in music). They consisted of singer and bassist Mark Burgess, guitarist Reg Smithies, guitarist Dave Fielding, drummer John Lever as well as keyboardists Alistair Lewthwaite and Andy Clegg. Their body of work is still critically acclaimed within the music press and influenced bands as diverse as The Smiths, Protokoll, The Comsat Angels, Puressence, Interpol, Editors.[1] Through Mark Burgess' penetrating vocals and dark and ironic lyrics, their songs often dealt with personal themes of childlike innocence and a reverence for nostalgia. Musically, perhaps most notable in their work was the band's innovative and distinctive use of dual guitar melodies, courtesy of Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding, as opposed to the traditional rhythm-and-lead guitarist format prevalent in rock music even to this day. These arrangements were often characterized by the use of delay and choral effects. The Chameleons' unique sound is quite often compared to U2's The Edge.

    Lyrics:
As High As You Can Go
    The Chameleons

Out of tune boys, out of tune boys
    Signposts to the sun
Single file boys, single file boys
    Signposts to the sun
    High as you can go
    Lennon to Munroe
Claw their way to the stars
    High as you can go
    Lennon to Munroe
Clawed their way to the stars
    I think they knew
And I don't care who you are
    Just sign the line
    And away you fly
    Unexpectedly rejected
    Safety for the few
    Same excuses resurrected
    None of them are true
    High as you can go
    Grace Kelly to Garbo
Clawed their way to the stars
    High as you can go
    Grace Kelly to Garbo
Clawed their way to the stars
    I think they knew
No I don't care who you are
Just sign the line and away you fly
Take a chance and join the dance
And you can make the sound
Take a chance and join the dance
And we can go to ground
    Go to ground
And I don't care who you are
Just sign the line and away you fly

  • The Chameleons - View from a Hill

High quality audio. This is the best song off the album, and certainly one of my all time favourite songs. Script of the Bridge was in my opinion their best (amongst other crackers) with dark dreamy tunes enveloped in chorused guitars and their obsession with delay pedals. It's a crying shame that this band didn't get as much attention that they deserved like their contemporaries such as Joy Division and U2. Both excellent bands, but in my opinion, this band blows them completely out of the water.

Notes by Mark - Again, recorded only half written for the last John Peel session the lyrics came from frequent visits to a home for retired service men called Broughton House, in Salford Manchester, were I'd often go to visit my grandfather. It made me very aware of my own relative youth and how precious my time was. There was one chap there, a former seaman in the merchant navy, who was bound to a wheelchair and likened his life there to being buried alive. I use to take him some hash whenever I went over and he'd sit in his chair, getting stoned and watching TV. He'd call them funny cigarettes. He used to talk of all these far-away exotic sounding places he'd visited, like Tangier.

  • The Chameleons UK - Second Skin

    6:52

    One cold damp evening
    The world stood still
I watched as I held my breath
    A silhouette I thought I knew
    Came through
    And someone spoke to me
    Whispered in my ear
    This fantasy's for you
    Fantasies are in this year

My whole life passed before my eyes
I thought what they say is true
I shed my skin and my disguise
    And cold, numb and naked
    I emerged from my cocoon
    And a half remembered tune
    Played softly in my head

    Then he turned smiling
    And said
I realize a miracle is due
I dedicate this melody to you
But is this the stuff dreams are made of?
If this is the stuff dreams are made of
No wonder I feel like I'm floating on air
    Everywhere
    It feels like I'm everywhere

When you fail to make the connection
You know how vital it is
Or when something slips through your fingers
You know how precious it is
Well you reach the point where you know
    It's only your second skin

    Someone's banging on my door

*The Chameleons (called The Chameleons UK on some American releases) were an English post-punk band that formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester, England in 1981. They consisted of singer and bassist Mark Burgess, guitarist Reg Smithies, guitarist Dave Fielding, and drummer John Lever (replacing original drummer Brian Schofield). The core quartet were sometimes augmented live by keyboardists Alistair Lewthwaite and Andy Clegg in the 1980s, and percussionist/vocalist Kwasi Asante during their reunion period (ex-Magazine drummer Martin Jackson also briefly replaced Lever during 1982-83 while the latter was on sabbatical).

The band initially released three studio albums in the 1980s, following 1982 debut single In Shreds (the fruit of a brief signing to Epic, latterly reissued on the Statik label), and several radio sessions for the BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel. The Chameleons released their first album, Script of the Bridge, on the Statik label in 1983. After their third release, 1986's Strange Times and the 1987 sudden death of band manager Tony Fletcher, they disbanded. Burgess then fronted The Sun and the Moon (with Lever), who issued one eponymous album on Geffen in 1988, followed by an array of solo projects. Guitarists Fielding and Smithies formed The Reegs, who released two albums: Return of the Sea Monkeys (1991) and Rock the Magic Rock (1993). John Lever later joined Bushart, who released the album Yesterday is History (2008).

The Chameleons had been broken up for well over a decade, before playing a small series of live dates in 2000, and the release of the album Strip (which reworked older material in an acoustic format). After a final studio album, 2001's Why Call It Anything?, another unplugged album (This Never Ending Now), and a reunion tour which took them across Europe and the United States, the band dissolved once again in early 2003.

In 2009, Mark Burgess and John Lever reformed to play Chameleons back catalogue material, under the name Chameleons Vox. --

  • The Chameleons UK - Swamp Thing

    5:56

I can already hear your tune
    Calling me across the room
When the world and his wife
    Are on my back again
    Not enough pleasure
    Too much pain

When the world is too much with me
    Please leave, just go away
Before I lose my mind completely
    Please leave, just go now
    In the sidestreet something's moving
    Look around, look around
    All around you
    Walls are tumbling down
    Stop staring at the ground

I can practically see your face
And another revolutionary falls from grace
Hear the thunder in your brain
    Not enough sunshine
    Too much rain

When the light of life has gone
    No change for the meter
Then the king of spivs will come
    Selling blood by the litre
    When nothing's sacred anymore
When the demon's knocking on your door
You'll still be staring down at the floor

Not too many hours from this hour
    So long?
    The storm comes
Or is it just another shower?

    Picking up the pieces
Half alive in a nine 'til five
    Vacant eyes
    Is it any wonder?
Primal scream at the TV screen
    Close your eyes

Now the world is too much with me
    Please leave, just go away
Before I lose my mind completely
    Just leave, please go now
    Now nothing's sacred anymore
When the demon's breaking down your door
You'll still be staring down at the floor

Not too many hours from this hour
    So long?
    Now the storm has come
Or is it just another shower?
