    Lyrics:
    Who's gonna tell you when
    It's too late?
    Who's gonna tell you things
    Aren't so great?

    You can't go on
    Thinking nothing's wrong, oh no
    Who's gonna drive you home
    Tonight?

    Who's gonna pick you up
    When you fall?
    Who's gonna hang it up
    When you call?
    Who's gonna pay attention
    To your dreams?
    Who's gonna plug their ears
    When you scream?

    You can't go on
    Thinking nothing's wrong, oh no
    Who's gonna drive you home
    Tonight?

    Who's gonna hold you down
    When you shake?
    Who's gonna come around
    When you break?

    You can't go on
    Thinking nothing's wrong, oh no
    Who's gonna drive you home
    Tonight?
You know you can't go on
    Thinking nothing's wrong, oh no
    Who's gonna drive you home
    Tonight?

Lyrics: I don't mind you comin' here
    And wastin' all my time
'Cause when you're standin', oh so near
    I kinda lose my mind
It's not the perfume that you wear
It's not the ribbons in your hair
And I don't mind you comin' here
    And wastin' all my time
I don't mind you hangin' out
    And talkin' in your sleep
It doesn't matter where you've been
As long as it was deep, yeah
You always knew to wear it well and
You look so fancy I can tell
I don't mind you hangin' out
    And talkin' in your sleep
    I guess, you're just what I needed
    I needed someone to feed
    I guess, you're just what I needed
    I needed someone to bleed
I don't mind you comin' here
And wastin' all my time, time
'Cause when you're standin', oh so near
I kinda lose my mind, yeah
It's not the perfume that you wear
It's not the ribbons in your hair
I don't mind you comin' here

  • The Cars - My Best Friends Girl

    3:46

Although much was made of their sense of new wave cool during their heyday, the real reason that the Cars' recorded work holds up so well is that it is built on solid pop songwriting. For proof, a listener need look no further than My Best Friend's Girl. The Cars' recorded version has an unmistakably new wave feel but a look at its components as a song reveal it is pure pop through and through. The lyrics, which depict a man's frustrated desire for the charms of a girl who is dating his best friend, are the kind of classic pop-song scenario that has been utilized by everyone from Elvis Presley (The Girl of My Best Friend) to Rick Springfield (Jessie's Girl). However, lyricist Ric Ocasek adds his own nifty twist the story with the lines She's my best friend's girl/But she used to be mine. The music also stays firmly in a pop vein by crafting a melody with a solid verse-chorus pop structure and layering its verses with singalong counterpoint lines to the main vocal melody. The Cars' recording pushes the song into new wave territory with a musical blend of sharp-edged guitar riffs, glacial synthesizer lines, and the irony-drenched vocal delivery of Ocasek. Just the same, it retains its pop center with elements like handclaps and the call-and-response interplay between Ocasek and the background vocals. This tension between crowd-pleasing pop hooks and new wave irony made My Best Friend's Girl stand out from the pack and it became a Top 40 hit as a result. It remains a favorite new wave oldie for radio programmers and one of the classics of the Cars' catalog.

  • The Cars - Lets Go promo.avi

    3:33

HQ very rare promo music video. Let's Go was the first single from The Cars' album Candy-O released in 1979. It was written by Ric Ocasek and features lead vocals by Cars bassist Ben Orr. The single peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the U.S., but the song was an even bigger success elsewhere. In Canada, the track reached #5, and remains the Cars' highest ever charting single in that country. Similarly, in Australia Let's Go peaked at #6, and remains The Cars' highest charted hit in that country.

The song's signature hook, a series of claps followed by a shouted Let's go! is derived from the 1962 instrumental of the same name by The Routers.

The song tells the story of a 17-year old girl and her budding interest in the nightlife. It is told from the perspective of a teenage boy who wishes to ask her out for a date. She refuses any and all of his advances.

The Cars are an American rock band that emerged from the early New Wave music scene in the late 1970s. The band consisted of lead singer and rhythm guitarist Ric Ocasek, lead singer and bassist Benjamin Orr, guitarist Elliot Easton, keyboardist Greg Hawkes and drummer David Robinson. The band originated from Boston, Massachusetts, and were signed to Elektra Records in 1977.

The Cars were at the forefront in merging 1970s guitar-oriented rock with the new synth-oriented pop that was then becoming popular and which would flower in the early 1980s.

On October 21, 2010, The Cars confirmed that they have reunited and are recording their first album in 23 years. Greg Hawkes will fill in on bass for Benjamin Orr, who died in 2000. (Source: Billboard)

From Rock Goes to College, filmed on 11/22/78 at the University of Sussex, Brighton, England.

Later on, it seemed like The Cars didn't play All Mixed Up too often at concerts, and I'm not sure why. In my mind, these two songs should always be together!

    ALL MIXED UP:
she shadows me in the mirror
she never leaves on the light
some things that i say to her
they just don't seem to bite

    it's all mixed up
    it's all mixed up
    it's all mixed up

    she tricks me into thinking
    i can't believe my eyes
    i wait for her forever
    but she never does arrive

she said leave it to me
    everything will be alright
she said leave it to me
    everything will be alright

    she's always out making pictures
    she's always out making scenes
    she's always out the window
when it comes to making dreams

  • Bye Bye Love - The Cars

    13:11

Bye Bye Love is a song by The Cars. The song appears on the band's 1978 debut album. It was written by singer/bandleader Ric Ocasek and sung by bassist Benjamin Orr.

Jaime Welton, author of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, described the track as a fan favorite, praising Elliot Easton as an unsung hero, littering songs like 'Bye Bye Love' with staggeringly good fills. I agree!

Bye Bye Love is one of The Cars' oldest songs, dating back to the mid 1970s. The song was first performed, and recorded as a demo, by the band Cap'n Swing, which featured Ocasek, Orr, and guitarist Elliot Easton as members. The song was later revived to appear on The Cars in 1978. Although the song was not released as a single, it has received regular airplay since the album was released.
