    Listen to Bongo Bong:

    ----------------------------

    Video directed by Enzo Brandner

Bongo Bong written by Manu Chao
    Published by Radio Bemba
Produced by Manu Chao & Renaud Letang

Mama was queen of the mambo
Papa was king of the Congo
    Deep down in the jungle
I started bangin' my first bongo
    Every monkey'd like to be
In my place instead of me
Cause I'm the king of bongo, baby
I'm the king of bongo bong

I went to the big town
Where there is a lot of sound
From the jungle to the city
    Looking for a bigger crown
    So I play my boogie
For the people of big city
    But they don't go crazy

When I'm bangin' in my boogie
    I'm the...

king of the bongo, king of the bongo bong

Hear me when I come, baby
king of the bongo, king of the bongo bong

Nobody'd like to be in my place instead of me
Cause nobody go crazy when I'm bangin' on my boogie
I'm a king without a crown hanging loose in a big town
But I'm the king of bongo baby I'm the king of bongo bong

King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
Hear me when I come baby

King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
    Hear me when I come

They say that I'm a clown
    Making too much dirty sound
They say there is no place for little monkey in this town
Nobody'd like to be in my place instead of me
Cause nobody go crazy when I'm bangin' on my boogie
    I'm the...

King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
Hear me when I come baby
King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
    Hear me when I come

Bangin' on my bongo all that swing belongs to me
I'm so happy there's nobody in my place instead of me
I'm a king without a crown hanging loose in a big town
But I'm the king of bongo baby I'm the king of bongo bong

King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
Hear me when I come baby
King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
    Hear me when I come

Mama was queen of the mambo
Papa was king of the Congo
    Deep down in the jungle
I started bangin' my first bongo
    Every monkey'd like to be

In my place instead of me
Cause I'm the king of bongo, baby

  • BEGINNERS GUIDE TO BONGOS - Pete Lockett - 06

    15:01

    Article 6
In this final lesson we transpose a few conga rhythms onto the bongos. It is a lot of fun to orchestrate the 'heel - tip' technique from the congas into the 'thumb - tip' technique on the bongos. These rhythms would never be heard played on the bongos in the traditional setting but can be very effective outside of the idiom.
From the content of these six lessons you should really have enough material to set you on your way, whether you want to go on and learn traditionally or else work in other areas such as pop, rock and jazz. Good luck and thanks for all the positive feedback. It's appreciated.

  • Bulrushes - The Bongos

    3:19

What was great about the early Bongos, to me anyway, was the extreme sense of spontaneity and recklessness onstage. There was no second-guessing. There was zero self-consciousness. Believe me when I tell you this. And, if I recall correctly, on the rare occasions that we rehearsed, we hardly ever played our own songs, focussing instead on covers that we may or may not perform in front of an audience. So, when the Bongos went on stage, it was always a new experience.

Phil Marino captured the essence of the early Bongos like no one else. He understood the sweet roughness. And because he could see it, he allowed us to. He showed us who we were.

The Bulrushes video is my favorite of the several we made. Instantly archival-looking, even new, it had the appearance of lost footage... like The Beatles at the Cavern Club. Besides the sense that Phil was documenting moments with the urgency of someone who knows they will never happen again - matching and complimenting our energy with his camerawork - the look and feel of this video was truly influential: Grainy, saturated Super-8 footage was simply not seen much in the early 80s, when the emphasis was on florescent colors, sharp edges, and and the false clarity of videotape. I got more than one phone call from other bands asking how we got that Super-8 effect in our new video. We used Super-8, I would answer, in a tone that can only be described as... well... impish.

Phil may not have been trying to start a trend, but like all truly creative artists, he did, unintentionally, just by being himself. Just by not second-guessing, and with zero self-consciousness.

Released by The Bongos originally as a Fetish Records single Bulrushes / Automatic Doors FET009 1981 and subsequently on Drums Along The Hudson. I shot this on Super 8mm film stock during live performances at The Peppermint Lounge and Trax, intro sequence coming down stairs, instrument close ups and end credit sequence (also used for the back cover of Drums Along The Hudson) were shot at Maxwell's. Editing was originally done at Skyline Studio on the 82nd floor of the Empire State Building. The original super 8 film was digitized in 2006 and the video was recut using Final Cut Pro. ...Phil

  • Bellamy Plays: The Bongos

    5:58

Last week we started a new series with Bellamy called Bellamy Plays. Turns out the tuba/sousaphone wasn't a winner for all 40 pounds of her. :) This week she's giving the bongos a whirl, and of course, going a little bit rogue as well. We get a lot of questions about why Bellamy doesn't play an instrument. The truth is, she has tons of instruments of her own and likes to play each of them at different times, but hasn't decided on one that she loves. The boys chose their own instruments when they wanted to, and our independent lady deserves the same opportunity. This is a fun way for her to explore! If you have kids that are thinking about learning an instrument, maybe these little tips or tricks will be helpful.

If you've never seen one of our videos, feel free to read some info about us below. :)

Hello everyone! We're the Clark family. Colt (the Dad) is a professional musician and Aubree (me, the Mom behind the camera) is a photographer. Together we home school our three children (even when we're not in the middle of a pandemic). :) We're keeping busy during our time at home by learning a new song every other day. We thought we'd record them and share as we go. Hopefully it brightens your day! tiger, tiger
    there are some things

    in the bushes
    hidden kisses
    you turn around
    and i see you
    wearing something
    striped in black...

    well live
    just like a tiger
and do what we want when we do
    well love,
and then our dreams of the kill will come true

    winds of passion
    this is something
    ive dreamed about
    and tonight im
    gonna tell you
    what ive cried about --
    deep inside me
there is something burning bright for you
    tiger, tiger
    in the bushes
    gonna wait for you

    and then well love
    just like a tiger!
our friends they will call on the phone
    and well long
for what the jungle has taken away

    well love
    just like a tiger
and do what we want when we do
    well fight
and then our dreams of the kill will come true

The Bongos were 'surprise guests at the after-party at City Winery in NYC for the R.E.M Tribute at Carnegie Hall on March 11th, 2009. They kicked off the party with an electrifying eight-song set and then enjoyed a warm reunion with their old pals R.E.M. and many others, including the Feelies and Apples In Stereo. Several of the songs from the Bongos set--including their tribute to Randy Bewley, lead guitarist of the Athens GA based band, Pylon--were filmed by Nora Giananni.

Rita Houston from WFUV describes the evening: A great night at Carnegie Hall honoring the music of REM and the added bonus of REM being in the house! That brought an electricity to the audience and Im sure an extra dose of nerves to all the performers. Myself included, as I was the house announcer introducing all the bands and was kinda freaked that REM was hearing them all. But it was all good. I had quite the perch in the wings, side stage, from which to take it all in. The camaraderie among the artists was beautiful to witness. Don Dixon talking to Marshall Crenshaw, Mike Mills praising the Calexico bass player, and EVERYONE grooving to The Feelies.

The after party at City Winery was awesome with all the artists, including REM hanging out. The BONGOS played! Then many of the artists jumped on stage at City Winery. I had some pasta with Dar Williams, talked life with Rachel Yamagata, hugged Don Dixon and shared some laughs with Glen Hansard. Very cool.

  • Pods o Pop Richard Barone on Phantom Train

    4:54

Following the reunited Bongos' explosive performance at the closing night at Maxwell's, the iconic Hoboken, NJ rock club they helped bring international prominence, the band announced that they'll continue to perform selected shows together into 2014. They will be celebrating the release of never-before-issued Bongos album, Phantom Train October 1 on the newly revived JEM Recordings imprint. Recorded in 1986, Phantom Train was revisted and remixed by Bongos front man, Richard Barone, earlier this Summer.

In the fall of 1985 The Bongos had just completed a 300-show tour following their RCA full length debut Beat Hotel. With barely a break in between, the group was invited by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell to record some new tunes, with an eye to bringing the group to his label. Frontman Richard Barone had been writing songs in the back of the Bongos' tour bus, sometimes collaborating with guitarist James Mastro. The new tunes streamlined the group's sound, explored some electronic textures, while emphasizing Frank Giannini's formidable drumming and Rob Norris' stately, anchoring baselines. Sessions began in New York City with co-producer/engineer E.T. Thorngren, and quickly moved to famed Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas.

Simultaneously a return to their initial rawness while using every state of the art recording technique with minimal overdubbing, the results were some of the most compelling pop statements the group was to make. However, while creativity flourished, so did the excesses of the touring lifestyle. While much of the album was completed at Compass Point, the album remained unfinished when the group returned home. Touring continued in the U.S. for the next several months, but it was clear the band was ready to pursue individual interests, and the sessions tapes were put on the shelf.

The Bongos had initially formed at the cusp of the 80's and released their debut album, Drums Along the Hudson, in 1982 on JEM Records' PVC label, instantly won favor on both sides of the Atlantic for its unusual combination of tribal rhythms, Beatlesque chord changes, and Sex Pistols overdrive. Stateside, along with comrades R.E.M. and a handful of others, the Bongos helped to create an exploding college radio market and amassed a fierce cult following. RCA Records took notice and signed the group and released their Numbers With Wings EP. Fueled by the MTV's support of the Numbers With Wings video and dance-floor success of Barbarella, the group had quickly made the leap from regional band to international act. The release of the follow-up, Beat Hotel, along with relentless touring, raised the Bongos' profile even further. However, after the sessions at Compass Point, the group quietly split in '87, soon after Barone released his first solo album, cool blue halo on JEM's Passport imprint, recorded live at New York's legendary Bottom Line with an all-acoustic line up (cool blue halo will be re-issued by Jem in October along with the 25th Anniversary Concert 2CD/DVD set). With Barone on tour as a solo artist supporting cool blue halo's release, Phantom Train languished in the vaults, until now.
