Dedicated to my father, Robert Massé. While not a musician, he support and encouraged my musical efforts (as did my mom) from an early age, and bought me guitars, a Yamaha DX-7, etc., when we really couldn’t afford it.

Mike plays a Martin D-41 in this song, the same guitar Dan Fogelberg used to use. Mike resides in Denver, Colorado.

Check out my blog post about this song, which includes Scott Slusher's interview with Dan's niece, Kate Fogelberg:

    Recording notes:
The vocals chain = Neumann KMS 105 to UA 6176 to UA Apollo Quad to Cubase Pro 8.5
The guitar chain = Neumann KM 184's (stereo pair) to Great River ME-1NV x2 to UA Apollo Quad to Cubase Pro 8.5
I also recorded the pickup signal and processed it with the UA Sound Machine Wood Works plug-in, and blended it with the stereo mic signals.

Video was shot by Valia Massé, Timmy Massé, and Mike Massé, edited by Mike Massé. The camera was a Canon EOS 70D with a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens. The video was edited in Sony Vegas Pro 13.

  • The Band - The Weight

    4:28

From their movie The Last Waltz with The Staple Singers -

    I pulled into Nazareth, I was feelin' about half past dead;
I just need some place where I can lay my head.
Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?
He just grinned and shook my hand, and No!, was all he said.

    (Chorus:)
    Take a load off Fannie, take a load for free;
Take a load off Fannie, And (and) (and) you can put the load right on me.

    I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide;
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side.
I said, Hey, Carmen, come on, let's go downtown.
She said, I gotta go, but m'friend can stick around.

    (Chorus)

Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say
It's just ol' Luke, and Luke's waitin' on the Judgement Day.
Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?
He said, Do me a favor, son, woncha stay an' keep Anna Lee company?

    (Chorus)

Crazy Chester followed me, and he caught me in the fog.
He said, I will fix your rags, if you'll take Jack, my dog.
I said, Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man.
He said, That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can.

    (Chorus)

Catch a Cannonball, now, t'take me down the line
My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time.
To get back to Miss Annie, you know she's the only one.
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone.

    (Chorus)

  • The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

    4:16

From the 1978 film 'The Last Waltz'

Virgil Caine is the name, and I served on the Danville train,
Til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again.
In the winter of '65, We were hungry, just barely alive.
By May tenth, Richmond had fell, it's a time I remember, oh so well,

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, when all the bells were ringing,
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and all the people were singin'. They went,
Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na,
Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na,
    Na, Na, Na,

Back with my wife in Tennessee, When one day she called to me,
Said Virgil, quick, come and see, there goes the Robert E. Lee!
Now I don't mind choppin' wood, and I don't care if the money's no good.
Ya take what ya need and ya leave the rest,
But they should never have taken the very best.

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, when all the bells were ringing,
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and all the people were singin'. They went,
Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na,
Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na,
    Na, Na, Na,

Like my father before me, I will work the land,
And like my brother above me, who took a rebel stand.
He was just eighteen, proud and brave, But a Yankee laid him in his grave,
And I swear by the mud below my feet,
You can't raise a Caine back up when he's in defeat.

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, when all the bells were ringing,
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and all the people were singin'. They went,
Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na,
Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na,
    Na, Na, Na,

    LYRICS:
    Kahit ikaw ay magalit
Sa ’yo lang lalapit, sa ’yo lang aawit
Kahit na ikaw ay nagbago na
Iibigin pa rin kita kahit ayaw mo na
    Tatakbo, tatalon
    Isisigaw ang pangalan mo
Iisipin na lang panaginip lahat ng ito

O, bakit ba kailangan pang umalis
Pakiusap lang na ‘wag ka nang lumihis
    Tayo’y mag-usap, teka lang, ika’y huminto
‘Wag mo ‘kong iwan, aayusin natin ‘to
Ang daling sabihin na ayaw mo na
    Pero pinag-isipan mo ba

    Lapit nang lapit, ako’y lalapit
Layo nang layo ba’t ka lumalayo
    Labo nang labo, ika’y malabo
    Malabo, tayo’y malabo

    Tatakbo, tatalon
    Isisigaw ang pangalan mo
Iisipin na lang panaginip lahat ng ito

O, bakit ba kailangan pang umalis
Pakiusap lang na ‘wag ka nang lumihis
    Tayo’y mag-usap, teka lang, ika’y huminto
‘Wag mo ‘kong iwan, aayusin natin ‘to
Ang daling sabihin na ayaw mo na
    Pero pinag-isipan mo ba

    Lapit nang lapit, ako’y lalapit
Layo nang layo ba’t ka lumalayo
    Labo nang labo, ika’y malabo
    Malabo, tayo’y malabo
    Lapit nang lapit, ako’y lalapit
Layo nang layo ba’t ka lumalayo
    Labo nang labo, ika’y malabo
    Malabo

O, bakit ba kailangan pang umalis
Pakiusap lang na ‘wag ka nang lumihis
    Tayo’y mag-usap, teka lang, ika’y huminto
‘Wag mo ‘kong iwan, aayusin natin ‘to
Ang daling sabihin na ayaw mo na
    Pero pinag-isipan mo ba

    Kahit ikaw ay magalit
    Sa ’yo lang lalapit
Kahit ‘di ka na sa ’kin

  • Dan Fogelberg - Leader of the band with lyrics

    4:19

    Lyrics :

    An only child
    Alone and wild
    A cabinet maker's son
    His hands were meant
    For different work
    And his heart was known
    To none --
    He left his home
    And went his lone
    And solitary way
    And he gave to me
    A gift I know I never
    Can repay

    A quiet man of music
    Denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
    But his music wouldn't wait
    He earned his love
    Through discipline
    A thundering, velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
    Took me years to understand.

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
    But his blood runs through
    My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
    To imitate the man
    I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band.

    My brothers' lives were
    Different
    For they heard another call
    One went to chicago
And the other to st. paul
    And I'm in colorado
When I'm not in some hotel
Living out this life I've chose
And come to know so well.

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go --
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
    And, pap, I don't think i
Said 'i love you' near enough --

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
    But his blood runs through
    My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
    To imitate the man
    I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
    I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band.

Levon Helm is so good as the lead singer and of course drummer on this wonderful track. The horn section includes some stellar players like Jerry Hey, but it's the solid five dudes in The Band who are the focus.

You can see what a genuine and gracious person Levon Helm was by what he does at the end of the song after he has sung has ass off, as he turns to the horn section to let them know how good they had just played.

  • Up On Cripple Creek - The Band

    4:36

    UP ON CRIPPLE CREEK
    The Band
    The Band (1970)

When I get off of this mountain, you know where I want to go?
Straight down the Mississippi river, to the Gulf of Mexico
To Lake Charles, Louisiana, little Bessie, girl that I once knew
She told me just to come on by, if there's anything she could do

Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

Good luck had just stung me, to the race track I did go
She bet on one horse to win and I bet on another to show
The odds were in my favor, I had 'em five to one
When that nag to win came around the track, sure enough she had won

Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

I took up all of my winnings, and I gave my little Bessie half
And she tore it up and threw it in my face, just for a laugh
Now there's one thing in the whole wide world, I sure would like to see
That's when that little love of mine, dips her doughnut in my tea

Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

Now me and my mate were back at the shack, we had Spike Jones on the box
She said, I can't take the way he sings, but I love to hear him talk
Now that just gave my heart a throb, to the bottom of my feet
And I swore and I took another pull, my Bessie can't be beat

Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

Now there's a flood out in California and up north it's freezing cold
And this living on the road is getting pretty old
So I guess I'll call up my big mama, tell her I'll be rolling in
But you know, deep down, I'm kind of tempted
To go and see my Bessie again.

Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

  • The Band - When I paint my masterpiece

    4:22

From their 1971's LP Cahoots, one of the well known Bob's songs.

Oh, the streets of Rome are filled with rubble
    Ancient footprints are everywhere
You can almost think that you're seein' double
On a cold, dark night on the Spanish Stairs
Got to hurry on back to my hotel room
Where I've got me a date with Botticelli's niece
She promised that she'd be right there with me
    When I paint my masterpiece

Oh, the hours I've spent inside the Coliseum
    Dodging lions and wastin' time
Oh, those mighty kings of the jungle, I could hardly stand to see 'em
Yes, it sure has been a long, hard climb
Train wheels runnin' through the back of my memory
When I ran on the hilltop following a pack of wild geese
Someday, everything is gonna be smooth like a rhapsody
    When I paint my masterpiece

Sailin' round the world in a dirty gondola
Oh, to be back in the land of Coca-Cola!

I left Rome and landed in Brussels
On a plane ride so bumpy that I almost cried
Clergymen in uniform and young girls pullin' muscles
Everyone was there to greet me when I stepped inside
    Newspapermen eating candy
Had to be held down by big police
Someday, everything is gonna be diff'rent
    When I paint my masterpiece

  • The Band - I Shall Be Released

    3:16

    According to Wikipedia:

I Shall Be Released is a 1967 song written by Bob Dylan.

The Band played it on their debut album, Music from Big Pink (1968), with Richard Manuel singing lead vocals, and Rick Danko and Levon Helm harmonizing in the chorus. A legendary performance of the song was performed near the end of The Band's farewell concert, The Last Waltz, in which all the night's performers (with the exception of Muddy Waters) plus Ringo Starr and Ronnie Wood graced the same stage.

Dylan recorded two primary versions. The first is the Basement Tapes initial recording, recorded in 1967 and released on Bootleg Series 1-3 in 1991. Dylan recorded the song a second time in 1971, releasing this new recording on Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II.

In 1969, the Jamaican harmony group The Heptones covered I Shall Be Released as a Reggae tune in 1969 for Studio One and then later on in 1976 at Lee Scratch Perry's Black Ark studio and label for the album Party Time.

    Lyrics:

They say everything can be replaced
They say every distance is not near
    So I remember every face
Of every man who put me here

I see my light come shinin'
From the west down to the east
Any day now, any day now
    I shall be released

They say every man needs protection
They say that every man must fall
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Somewhere so high above this wall

I see my light come shinin'
From the west down to the east
Any day now, any day now
    I shall be released

Now yonder stands a man in this lonely crowd
A man who swears he's not to blame
And all day long I hear him shouting so loud
Just crying out that he was framed

I see my light come shinin'
From the west down to the east
Any day now, any day now
    I shall be released

  • Bob Dylan and The Band - Like A Rolling Stone

    8:23

This was recorded in 1966 so it was a few years before The Band split and did their own thing. I think it's pretty cool to see Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, and Richard Manuel playing with Dylan at such an early time, so early The Band didn't even look like themselves because this was before they got the look that we're all so familiar with. Hope you enjoy!

    EDIT:

Rest In Peace Mickey Jones. He is the great man playing the drums in this performance!

Any day now, any day now
    I shall be released

They say every man needs protection
They say that every man must fall
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Somewhere so high above this wall

I see my light come shinin'
From the west down to the east
Any day now, any day now
    I shall be released

Now yonder stands a man in this lonely crowd
A man who swears he's not to blame
All day long I hear him shouting so loud
Just crying out that he was framed

I see my light come shinin'
From the west down to the east
Any day now, any day now
    I shall be released

    Lyrics:
You can hear them going crazy
    In stadiums in every nation
    A never-ending celebration baby
That’s how we show our dedication
    The boys in the band
    The boys in the band
We do it for the fans
    The boys in the band

Where the ladies let the crowd in
Cause it’s about to get loud in here
And we’re only gettin' started baby
Everybody wanna party with the boys in the band
    The boys in the band
We do it for the fans
    The boys in the band

    And if it isn’t love
Then why these new editions keep on showin’ up
And why the boys from Boston keep on hangin’ tough
Went from boys to men but we ain’t ever growin' up
    Can’t get enough

    CHORUS:
You can hear them going crazy
    In stadiums in every nation
    A never-ending celebration baby
That’s how we show our dedication
    The boys in the band
    The boys in the band
We do it for the fans
    The boys in the band

    We like the boys
    The boys in the band
    The boys in the band
    The boys in the band
    [REPEAT]

    RAP:
Before we go Boyz II Men — To the End Of The Road
Let’s go back to the beginning
    Pay respect — New Edition
Then came BBD, BSB, B2K, 1D
    98 Degrees
Come And Talk To Me — Jodeci
    From B Brown to Beantown
    To H-Town to O-Town
Came the sound Berry Gordy found all the way back in Motown!
Woooooo — Had to catch my breath
Peace — LFO, Menudo, JLS, BTS
Westlife, Jackson 5, N’Sync, Take That
    I Want You Back!

    And if it isn’t love
Why does every generation have another one
And why do all directions only lead to one
Before you know it there’ll be even more to come
    You can’t get enough

    CHORUS:
You can hear them going crazy
    In stadiums in every nation
    A never-ending celebration baby
That’s how we show our dedication
    The boys in the band
    All around the world
    The boys in the band
    All across the land
We do it for the fans
    Let me hear you say
    The boys in the band
We wanna be with the boys in the band

    We like the boys
    The boys in the band
    The boys in the band
    The boys in the band

    Más de FLY THE BAND

    FLY THE BAND - CONTIGO

    Te encontré
    Seguí tus pasos al bailar
Sentimos electricidad y nos perdimos un momento
    Te abracé
    Sentí mi corazón vibrar
Nos fuimos al rincón del bar
Con ganas de robarte un beso

    Contigo yo quiero perderme
Hacernos paso entre la gente poder escapar
    Contigo yo quiero perderme
Besar tu boca lentamente llevarte a volar

Sólo mírame a los ojos y me dejo levar
Yo conozco un paraíso a donde quiero llegar
    Contigo hoy
    Contigo hoy

Sólo toma de mi mano y no miremos atrás
Yo conozco un paraíso a donde quiero llegar
    Contigo hoy
    Contigo hoy

Descifré tus labios en la oscuridad
    Dijiste vamos a un lugar
    En donde todo sea perfecto
    Y todo sea perfecto

    Contigo yo quiero perderme
Hacernos paso entre la gente poder escapar
    Contigo yo quiero perderme
    Besar tu boca lentamente
    Llevarte a volar

Sólo mírame a los ojos y me dejo levar
Yo conozco un paraíso a donde quiero llegar
    Contigo hoy
    Contigo hoy

Sólo toma de mi mano y no miremos atrás
Yo conozco un paraíso a donde quiero llegar
    Contigo hoy
    Contigo hoy

    Contigo hoy
    Contigo hoy
    Contigo girl
