In this lesson I'll breakdown the fundamental techniques needed to play the Texas Shuffle style of rhythm guitar heard in Pride And Joy by SRV. The notes of the rhythm are easy to figure out, but what's more challenging is keeping those strings under control as you rake up and down across all 6 strings.

Dirty Rake Guitar Rhythm | Texas Blue Shuffle | Techniques for Beginning

Stevie Ray Vaughan was the king of this style of rhythm. It sounds great and it sounds easy, but it’s not at all! Everybody seems to have a slightly different approach, but a couple of things are certain.
    1. You need to 100% nail the syncopated train rhythm
    2. You need to mute the strings either with your left or right hand – or both
    3. You need to somewhat aggressively hit the notes with your left hand

And most important of all, if you break the rhythm for any reason – playing a lick for example – you need to go right back into it as soon as you can.

I’m still learning this technique, and I thought I’d pass on some things I’ve found helpful. Good luck and have fun!

Great tune mixing lead and rhythm.
Sounds smart but easy to learn.
Here's the end result against the Backing Track.
    First look at chords
If you don't already know these three then pause the video and practice them
    Play E7 with this rhythm.
Now I'm going to play the same riff but ending on A to fit with the A7 chord
    Play A7 with this rhythm
Last line quick change from B7 to A7

So now let's play the whole verse together. I'll play the lead lines and you respond with the chords:
You might want to run through that a few times before moving on.

  • Stevie Ray Vaughan-Pride and Joy Style-Blues Guitar Lesson-Texas Blues Fender Strat

    6:50

As with all great guitarists, Stevie Ray Vaughan's rhythm playing was as strong as his leads.Stevie Ray Vaughan excelled at a style of shuffle playing that has its roots in earlier players, yet he was able to turn it into a personal trademark. This riff is based off of a twelve bar blues in E. The chords being outlined are E7, A7, and B7, with a hard shuffle feel. Some of the other techniques being used are hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, bends, and position shifts.
When you listen to a rhythm section playing a medium shuffle, it's quite common to hear the bass playing a walking line (moving quarter notes) while the guitar strums chords on the upbeats. When these two parts are combined on one instrument, the result is a complete shuffle groove.

    ????INFO ABOUT THIS LESSON:

    ????ABOUT THIS GUITAR LESSON

I had so much fun playing this excellent Texas Blues full of chromatic notes, Travis picking technique, and shuffle rhythm.

Just like Jazz music, the Blues can digest chromatic notes easily. The dominant 7th chords can take a lot of different scales, such as the major and minor Pentatonic, as well as the Blues Pentatonic.

Because of that, it's easy to add chromatic phrases that sound really good and in style. I mean, try to apply the same chromatisms to a Pop chord progression! They would sound horrible.

In this guitar lesson, I am going to show you how to play a fingerstyle Blues in G stuffed with a bunch of killing chromatic phrases that will add a lot of color and style to the Blues.

I called it Texas Blues because it reminds me of the music you would listen to in a Texas Bar back in 1900.

Join me in this lesson and learn how to play this awesome Texas Blues in G. Enjoy this lesson!

    Are you a full-time YouTuber?
Yes, I am on YouTube as Marco Cirillo, and I promote my videos on my website BlitzGuitar.com. All the courses I post online are available on my Patreon page

How long have you been playing guitar?
I started playing guitar when I was 10 years old, so it has been more than 20 years. I have always loved fingerpicking guitar, so this is why all my tutorials focus on this topic.

    Why are you on Patreon?
Patreon is great! It allows creators to make money doing what they love. On Patreon, I can share my guitar lessons with my Patrons and get paid for it. As a creator, I feel like Patreon really made a massive difference in the way I share my content :)

    Do you do concerts?
I used to do a lot of gigs in the past. London is a great place to play music almost every day. When my YouTube channel started to grow, I decided to go all-in and try to help as many people as possible learning guitar. This goal takes all the time I have available, so I am not doing any gig or concert atm.

You'll never sound like Stevie Ray Vaughan using blues scales. That's because he didn't study or play scales to get his sound. He studied and played licks. There's a big difference.

Many of the licks he played can be captured in 5 simple shapes. They're not scales, just guidelines. This is a shortcut (and it's not for everyone) but if you can't make your scales sound great, you might be working too hard.

  • Blues Guitar Lessons - Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Shuffle - Blues Guitar Lesson - In G

    7:06

As with all great guitarists, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s rhythm playing was as strong as his leads. Stevie Ray Vaughan excelled at a style of shuffle playing that has its roots in earlier players, yet he was able to turn it into a personal trademark.
This riff is based off of a twelve bar blues in G. The chords being outlined are G7, C7, and D7, with a hard shuffle feel. Some of the other techniques being used are hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, bends, and position shifts. When you listen to a rhythm section playing a medium shuffle, it’s quite common to hear the bass playing a walking line (moving quarter notes) while the guitar strums chords on the upbeats.
