  • The Sleeping Beauty Waltz - Piano 4 Hands, Arr. Rachmaninoff

    3:55

Rachmaninoff's arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Waltz from the Sleeping Beauty, arranged for four hands. Performed by the Aurora Duo.
    Sheet music:

In 1890, Alexander Siloti was approached to arrange the music for piano duet. He declined, but suggested his then 17-year-old cousin Sergei Rachmaninoff would be more than competent. This offer was accepted, although Siloti supervised the arrangement. Rachmaninoff himself arranged the entire score for piano solo.

This is one of those melodies we've all heard since we were children, timeless in its beauty. It was famously featured in Disney's The Sleeping Beauty, where Aurora waltzes along with her Prince to the piece. Truly one of my favorites since I was a child. I recently had the chance to perform this with a friend, and it's an extremely fun piece to play. It's not very virtuosic either and falls under the fingers well, so grab a friend and try it!

I do not own the music or the audio. I am posting this video for educational purposes and gain no monetary benefits whatsoever.

  • Tchaikovsky: Troika

    3:50

    *from The Seasons, November
    A Window in Time
Rachmaninov performs classic piano works in a spectacular new recording made on Bosendorfer 290SE Reproducing Piano. This remarkable listening experience brings Rachmaninov's phenomenal pianistic talent to life in today's world. By using unprecedented new techniques of transfer and reproduction, the mechanical aspects of music roll performances have been eliminated. More astonishingly, these advances reveal the subtleties and fine details of Rachmaninov's playing with startling clarity, showing us why he was regarded as perhaps the greatest pianist of his time.

  • Sleeping Beauty Waltz for Piano 4 Hands

    4:21

Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), was a Russian composer during the Romantic period. One of his most famous works is The Sleeping Beauty, which was written as a ballet in three acts. The score reached completion in 1889, which led to the ballet's first premiere in 1890 at the Marinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The ballet's choreography was collaborated by Marius Pepita who was a French and Russian ballet dancer, pedagogue and choreographer. Pepita is regarded as the most influential ballet master in the history of ballet. In 1890, Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), was assigned to arrange the score for piano four-hands when he was only 17 years of age. Being both competitive and determined, Rachmaninoff in addition transcribed the entire score into a piano solo.

    9:21

This is played in Episode 18 of Your Lie in April.

Kōsei and Nagi perform a set piece written for piano four hands. During the performance, Kōsei competes with Nagi to see if she can keep up with him. As Nagi believes that she understands Kōsei on a deeper level, this pushes her to perform with all her heart. After they end their set piece, the audience is blown away with their performance. While backstage, Kōsei is confronted by Takeshi, who is jealous that Kōsei teamed up with Nagi, otherwise known as his little sister. Takeshi demands Kōsei the chance to beat him in an upcoming piano competition. Kōsei visits Kaori on the roof of the hospital to find her passion for music awakened, since she listened to Kōsei and Nagi's performance from her phone. Kōsei challenges Kaori to perform one more duet with him.

During the school festival, Kōsei and Nagi perform Rachmaninoff's piano arrangement of the Waltz from Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty. This is unique because it is arranged for piano four hands, meaning two pianists play on a single piano.

  • Rachmaninoffs Piano Concerto No. 2, II. Adagio Sostenuto

    6:45

Many popular songs have classical roots but it is not well known that Eric Carmen's composition All By Myself owes its classical roots to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. In this video, I juxtaposed Eric Carmen's original recording of his composition on a recording of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra.

The song was revived and made popular by Celine Dion in 1996. It was one of her most popular recordings. I did a video based on her highly successful version a few months back and for those interested, I provided the link through a video response to this video I created a montage of her English and Spanish version for this video.

The Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, is a concerto for piano and orchestra composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff between the autumn of 1900 and April 1901. The second and third movements were first performed with the composer as soloist on 2 December 1900. This piece is one of Rachmaninoff's most enduringly popular pieces and established his fame as a concerto composer.

Eric Carmen first composed the song's interlude, then took the verse from Rachmaninoff and the chorus from his own Let's Pretend. Carmen explained that Rachmaninoff was his favorite music.

  • Sviatoslav Richter – Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff recital

    46:06

Sviatoslav Richter plays Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, in a recital at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, in Moscow, 1981.

My commitment to the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts began while I was still studying at the Moscow Conservatory. Then, I absolutely fell in love with the Museum of New Western Art, first located on the Kropotkinskaya street, but which subsequently merged partially with the Museum of Fine Arts. There was a time when the French impressionists opened for me a totally different understanding of not only art, but also nature. This museum keeps enriching me with an abundance of art from all human eras. I warmly welcome the idea of Irina Aleksandrovna Antonova, the wonderful manager of this institution, to organize here concerts. The feast of the concert becomes even bigger, it grows into a special event where Music and Art get close together. My wish is that this tradition would continue in the future, and I hope that all the artists will be glad to perform in the Pushkin Museum, which, by the way, already proved The December Eveningsof year 1982. – S. R.
    -----------------------------

    3:47

    PYOTR IL'YICH TCHAIKOVSKY (1840–1893)

PIANO TRIO IN A MINOR OP. 50
    DISCOVER:
    SERGEY RACHMANINOV (1873–1943)
TRIO ÉLÉGIAQUE IN G MINOR NO. 1
    OP. POSTH.
Performers: TRIO MEZZENA-PATRIA-BALLARIO (Franco Mezzena, Violin, Sergio Patria, Cello, Elena Ballario, Piano)

Highly praised for his orchestral works, Tchaikovsky never reached great popularity as a chamber music composer but, although his chamber output does not comprise many titles, it does includes
works of distinct value, such as the beautiful but little known Trio for violin, cello and piano, Op.50 which we are featuring on this release.

The work was composed in memory of his friend Nikolaj Rubinstein, who had passed away at the age of 46 and was considered at the time one of the greatest European pianists. It was premiered in Moscow on 30 October, 1882.

Rachmaninov was one of the finest pianists of the first half of the 1900s and a gifted composer. After the Bolshevik coup he left his native Russia and moved abroad, where he gained fame as a performer, especially in the United States. As a composer, Rachmaninov is nowadays considered the natural successor to Tchaikovsky’s style within Russian music between the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Trio élégiaque No.1 in G minor for piano, violin and cello was written in the short space of four days in 1892, when Rachmaninov was only 19. It consists of a single extended movement (Lento
lugubre) in classic sonata form. It was published posthumously, in 1947.

Having known each other personally for a long time, Franco Mezzena, Sergio Patria and Elena Ballario began their artistic partnership in 2015 as a natural consequence of their mutual
respect and interpretative affinity. Franco’s precise and rigorous violin playing, Sergio’s inborn expressivity and Elena’s musical balance are the three main characteristics that give their trio all the necessary means to best express the music they unanimously choose to perform.

  • Sergei Rachmaninoff life and death - Mini documentary 4K

    11:50

Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff was a Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor of the late Romantic period. Some of his compositions are staples in the classical music repertoire.
In Rachmaninoff's work, early influences of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev, Mussorgsky, and other Russian composers gave way to a personal style notable for its song-like melodicism, expressiveness and rich orchestral colors. Rachmaninoff often featured the piano in his compositions, and he explored the expressive possibilities of the instrument through his own skills as a pianist.
