The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This cover by Gary Puckett from their first record album in many ways equals or goes far beyond what would be expected in a cover song. Largely because of the fine Al Capps arrangement and of course the magnificent voice of Gary Puckett!

  • American Bandstand 1968 -Top 10 - Young Girl, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap

    4:00

    Airdate: April 27, 1968

Gary Puckett (and The Wrecking Crew) has his 2nd hit in a row as “Young Girl” is at #3 today after spending the last 3 weeks at its peak of #2. For those who think this song might be difficult to dance to, the #1 song on Bandstand last week and for the next 2 weeks will be Bobby Goldsboro’s “Honey”. How do you dance to that?!

Dancing today: Deedee Del Campos (2:51), Roni Menacker (3:05), Famous Hooks (3:21), Jim Lyle (3:26), and Steve Trevit on the far-left riser. Based on all of the “shenanigans” going on here, I think this might be the end of a long day of taping, lol.

When Dick Clark says “Do not pick up a chair and hit your little sister with it”, he is referring to the previous segment where Hollywood stuntmen smashed chairs and bottles over each other. You can see the segment and this entire episode on the American Bandstand Fan Club YT channel.

…..And 3 weeks after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated (April 4) in Memphis, James Earl Ray is still on the run. During this week’s episode of “The FBI”, a brief appeal was made to the American public for assistance in capturing him. Unknown to the actual FBI, Ray is in Toronto, Canada today using a fake name and passport and is about to flee to London. He would not be captured until June 8th when he was spotted by an immigration officer at Heathrow airport attempting to fly to Brussels with two fake passports and a gun.

  • Gary Puckett & The Union Gap - Lady Willpower -1968

    2:46

Gary Puckett & The Union Gap where formed in San Diego, California in 1966. Named after a small city in Yakima County, Washington, where Gary Puckett grew up. Gary's The Union Gap members where Gary 'Mutha' Withem, Dwight Bement, Kerry Chater and Paul Wheatbread.

Lady Willpower is about a man who is frustrated that the woman he is seeing will not agree to have sex with him. He promises, if she complies, to shower (her) heart with tenderness, but it is also implicit that the relationship will end (It's now or never) if she does not.
An 'innocent romantic' song from a time long before the metoo era... And that is exactly the way how to see this song.

Lady Willpower entered the charts in many country's in 1968, with high top ten peaks: #2 in the US Billboard Hot100, #5 in the UK, #7 in Belgium and #8 in the Dutch Top40

  • American Bandstand 1968 -Dancer Mark- Over You, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap

    3:14

Here is a rare interview with one of the Bandstand dancers, so much so that it seems to befuddle Dick Clark a bit. I wonder if Mark Pachter ever became a make-up artist, got into movie editing, or showed up dressed as a clown? Note that they use the “Ross Electronics Combination AM/FM Portable Radio and Phonograph” as a picture stand…..it has so many uses!

“Over You” is the 4th top 10 hit in a row for Gary Puckett & The Union Gap. (one of my all-time favorite music groups) The others being “Woman, Woman” #4 (in ’67), “Young Girl” #2, and “Lady Willpower” #2. Today it is #9 and will peak at #7 in 2 weeks.

In the studio, note the connected double risers. (new in ’68) Dancers spotted today are: Frank Vanderpuil & Robin Miller (in front of the riser at 1:17), Don Sanuskar and Sharon Bell (1:20), Stan Sobern looking much different than he did last year in the Swing Dance Contest (2:38), Daniel Campos (2:45), and Maureen Cohen (2:49). Towards the end of the song you can also catch Dick chatting it up with some kids sitting on the podium.

…..And today is the first day of the Summer Olympics in Mexico City. In 4 days (Oct. 16) Americans Tommie Smith and John Carlos will win the Gold and Bronze medals in the men’s 200 meter race. On the podium, during the Star-Spangled Banner, they both would bow their heads and raise black-gloved fists (Tommie raised his right hand and John his left as John had forgotten to bring his gloves that day) in what became known as the “1968 Olympics Black Power Salute”. Tommie and John have both repeatedly stated that it was not a “Black Power” salute or an act of anger or hatred towards the U.S., but it was meant to be a protest of black suppression, inequality and poverty.

This rare live performance by Gary Puckett (and the Union Gap) is from an appearance the group made in February of 1969 in one of the initial episodes of 'The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour'.

Gary gives out an excellent vocal performance (arguably, his best captured live) of the groups 4th million dollar hit song (released in the fall of 1968) and was the last tune written by Jerry Fuller for the band.
