Leon Bridges: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    18:02

September 08, 2015 by BOB BOILEN

We probably should have shot this Tiny Desk Concert in black-and-white. Listening to Leon Bridges, I hear a sound with its heart and soul rooted in 1962. There's purity in his voice that's unadorned, untouched and unaffected by 21st-century pop. It's just soul.

Still, the songs from this 26-year-old Fort Worth singer feel refreshing in the context of the day. Surely there's touches of Sam Cooke's spiritual sound, but Leon Bridges has a way of making the familiar feel adventurous and new. It may be because this is all new to him. He only picked up the guitar around the age of twenty and only began listening to classic soul music after friends told him he sounded like R&B musicians from long ago. What Leon Bridges has tapped into on his debut album with fellow Fort Worth musicians including Austin Jenkins from White Denim is a universal sound, an undeniably heartfelt sound which transcends age, race and musical tastes. He's easy to love and tough to resist and his performance at the Tiny Desk with his fabulous band is a testament to what it means to sing from the heart.

9th of 12 Grace VanderWaal, Exs & Ohs, Elle King cover, YouNow jigsaw edit, 2016-07-20

    1:35

12 Days of Christmas 2018, a series of 12 videos cobbled together from YouNow Moments.

Welcome to new subscribers G., Kevin, and Gabbie. This current effort works out well for the subscriber count. Less so in therms of feedback. Sure, I get some thumbs up, and the thumbers-downers are as faithful as ever. But it's awfully quiet in the comments. What do you think of these frankenvideos? Do you like them? Or are they too limited in form and only interesting for the novelty? (After all, I have collected quite a few songs here that I didn't have on the every song playlist yet.)

On July 20, 2016 Grace VanderWaal sang, among other songs, Elle King's 'Ex's & Oh's' during her YouNow broadcast. This being a favorite of many FanderWaals, there were an abundance of Moments to be found of this. However, the chorus also being a favorite, most of those are of the same bits of the song. So enjoy the Chorus three times, with hardly any verse text. However, if you listen closely, you can hear the additional depth of many parallel recordings. ;-)
Her performance was boisterous, as always when she sings this song. Have fun!

On the whole series of YouNow Moment jigsaw edits:

Grace VanderWaal had a productive summer in 2016, exercising her performance muscle before going back on AGT, broadcasting six times on YouNow, singing many songs. Some of those have been captured in the form of Moments, short snippets of the broadcasts typically 16 s long, that can be captured by viewers. The Moments that can be viewed on Grace's YouNow page have been published many times. Using the right methods of spelunking, there's quite a bit more to be collected from the depths of the YouNow website, however, and if one invests a bit of work, more comprehensive footage can be combined from the short clips. My harvesting project has turned up material for at least twelve videos, and I am going to publish these as a series during the twelve days of Christmas this year. (Also to hopefully definitely pass, and celebrate, 100 subscribers, which I have scratched on and off in December 2018.)
Due to the nature of the source material, many of these videos will be very short and fragmented.

    ************************************************************************

The world needs more love! Check out Grace's music on her website:

And now that you know how awesome it is: buy it!
If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to see Grace live: GRAB IT! She is phenomenal on stage.

Animenz - Pokémon medley piano Tutorial ▶ Pikasfed

    10:28

▶I was a big fan of the first generation of the pokemon games - pokemon blue / red - and I can still remember all the hours I have spent on this game with my gameboy. This game essentially defined my childhood and that's the reason why I can still remember so vividly the game soundtrack - even after all these years. I still know, how to perform the missingno. glitch with the item duplication 128x, and I can still remember, how much of a bitch the rival trainer was - always showing up in the most inconvenient moments ever. ◀
    (Love this quote :3)

It's done. It is! It's finally done! I still can't believe it.
I started this project a long time ago, you probably don't remember when that was. I started transcribing the medley 6 months ago, in September 2017, just before the start of school. Who would have ever said that I would have taken me so much time, eh Animenz?

    I admit it, I kept this as a side project for most of this period. I had to study and I wanted to improve my piano skills and work on other songs;
at first I wasn't having much fun transcribing, probably because it's a little bit boring if you don't know how to entertain yourself, but I kept working on it maybe once or twice a week for a few hours a day, hoping to finish this transcription soon.

It's December, Christmas is approaching; in this period I completely forget about this project that I was working on. After two months of pause, I decided to keep transcribing the medley, but this time, I would have dedicated more time and attention to it. In this period something magic-like happened.

    ...

    I feel like I know you, Animenzzz. I haven't met you, I don't know your name, but it feels like I know you, know how you think, how you behave and how you act, I consider you a friend of mine. Transcribing for me is like looking inside someone's heart and studying it;
By transcribing your improvisation I discovered what was going through your mind in that moment, how you felt and how you managed to picture that emotions in the music. Transcribing truly is a unic thing that everyone should do at least once in his life, even if he doens't play the piano. But not just a piece, something as long as this piano medley, because transcribing a long video will necessarily take a lot of time if you want to be accurate, and in this time you will live a journey, the same journey that the performer's mind has lived in that moment. Probably this is the reason why i know you.
    --

It's February, I've been working really hard on this project in this month, and recently something strange but beautiful happened. I dreamed about you, Animenzzz.
I was in my room, and instead of my desk, instead of my laptop (where I transcribe), there was you with your piano (that was stabbed in the wall actually xD), and you were playing beautiful melodies not just for me, but for thousands of people who were watching you since you were streaming the performance live on your channel.
This was such an incredible dream, and I hope one day I will be able to meet you and listen to you playing live, not just for me, but for all of us people who admire your work.
(This means please come play live in Italy c:)

I don't have anything else to say, I hope my letter wasn't too long to read, and that you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed transcribing your medley.
    Just, farewell

    Your dearest,
    Pikasfed

    LYRICS
    All that I want
    Is to wake up fine
    Tell me that I’m alright
    That I Ain’t gonna die
    All that I want
Is a hole in the ground
You can tell me when it’s alright
    For me to come out

    HARD TIMES
Gonna make you wonder why you even try
    HARD TIMES
Gonna take you down and laugh when you cry
    THESE LIVES
And I still don't know how I even survive
    HARD TIMES
    HARD TIMES
and I gotta get to rock bottom

    Walking around
    With my little raincloud
    Hanging over my head
    And it ain’t coming down
    Where do I go?
    Gimme some sort of sign
    Hit me with lightning!
    Maybe I’ll come alive

Tell my friends I’m coming down
We'll kick it when I hit the ground

Death Cab for Cutie - Thank You for Today tour Live

    1:53:11

The Death Cab For Cutie stream will begin around 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 6. Since 1997, the rock group has been releasing songs that can easily get stuck in your head. From their first release,
to their most recent album 'Thank You For Today,' their music has made an impact on audiences around the world. Ben Gibbard’s vocals fill the tracks, punching through poetic lyrics. Nick Harmer is on bass guitar, Jason McGerr does drums, Dave Depper is on guitar and keyboard, as is Zac Rae. These five men create their own atmosphere within their music, allowing any type of fan to listen in and get something from it. It’s approachable rock with a lasting effect, which is probably why Gibbard was able to success with break off projects like The Postal Service.

Diomedes Chinaski - Carta Para Tyler, The Creator

    2:51

Uma homenagem a Tyler, The Creator e todos meus fãs.

    Composição: Diomedes Chinaski
    Produção Musical: Dario
    Mix e Master: Mazili
    Video: Rostand Costa
    Id Visual: HTTP
Tradução para o inglês: Iara Fernandes
Letra : Meu rapper favorito tem orelhas grandes
Cresceu solitário, sem armas e gangues
me ensinou que o padrão é somente um padrão
e mesmo fora do padrão posso me sentir grande
Sei que talvez nunca venhas a ler esta carta
Tyler, minha existência sem você é chata...
Talvez morras sem saber o quanto te amo
Minhas meias são pra te imitar, adoro jazz e piano
Me injetou auto-estima quando eu tava precisando
Você me mostrou um mundo que eu não andava enxergando
Sabe, eu também me sinto igual a você
Acho que esses cara nunca vao me compreender !
Depois fazem o que eu fiz há alguns anos atrás
Só que aí eu já me encontro há alguns anos a mais
Ontem sonhei que o mundo todo era GOLF Wang
A gente caminhava junto e gritava Wolf Gang

I love you Tyler.... I love you Tyler
    finalmente tou me sentindo style...
com voce a vida é mais suportável.
    obrigado Tyer !
    2 x

querem me ver fraquejar mas eu amo essas rimas
me guia igual Virgílio guiou Dante Alighiere
I love you, Tyler, e nao há nada que eu nao supere!
um dia vou ganhar um autografo na minha meia
essa é minha carta, bro, espero que leia... ao senhor Wolf Haley...

I love you Tyler.... I love you Tyler
    finalmente tou me sentindo style...
com voce a vida é mais suportável.
    Obrigado. Tyler

; My favorite rapper has big ears. grew up lonely without guns and gang. taught me that the pattern is only the standard and even outside it I can feel great. I know he may never read that letter. Tyler, without you my existence is boring. Maybe you'll die without knowing how much I love you. my socks are to imitate you. I love jazz and piano. You injected me with self-esteem when I needed it. You showed me a world that I could not see. You know, I feel just like you too. I guess those niggas will never understand me. Then they do what I did years ago. But when they do, I'm already a few years ahead. Yesterday I dreamed that the whole world was golf wang. we walked along and yelled wolf gang

I love you, Tyler. I love you, Tyler. finally I'm feeling stylish. With you life is more bearable. Thank you, Tyler.

would not ask for a beat. I would not ask you for a feat. this shit is sincere and serious, it's real shit. I'd rather be with you than with a thousand bitchs. I'll take you to stroll in hellcife. Thank you for making me have faith in me. Everyone wants to get their feet on me. One day I'll wear whatever I want on me. I have the Giza pyramid in me. I think of you for most of the day. may seem gay, but when your art appeared I painted those gray days yellow. They want to see me falter but I love these rhymes. Guide me as Virgil guided Dante Alighieri. I love you, Tyler, and there's nothing I can not beat! One day I'll get an autograph on my sock. This is my letter, bro. I hope you read. To Mr. Wolf Haley.

    More info:
A year and a half since the release of their debut album, and two member changes later, Sheer are back.

With their new EP, Psychic Quarry, Sheer embrace a change that finds the band at their most relaxed and inspired. While their debut LP Uneasy introduced the band as one with a kinship for dreamy, reverb-induced soundscapes, Psychic Quarry is a much more catchy, and indie rock-informed affair.

The six songs on Psychic Quarry cover a lot of ground – feelings of anxiety and depression, the vulnerability of intimacy, and even the post-election shock many of found ourselves coping with.

Psychic Quarry will be released April 28th on vinyl, as well as digitally.

we'll treat this place like a crime scene and we'll figure it out

you're on a poster in Brooklyn
and someone tore off the mouth
I'll take it as a sign you're still being yourself

and I won't cry for you, or you, or you ooh
and I won't cry for you, or you, or you ooh

and when you moved down to Jackson
it made me wanna go south
when you needed me most but you wouldn't reach out

so I won't cry for you, or you, or you ooh
I won't cry for you, or you, ooh ooh

    uh oh
it's the life you've always known
    so it goes
so it goes, it goes, it goes goes goes
    so it goes...

you're always on a new mission
    plotting some other route
when you're finally done all you're left with is doubt

you never learn how to listen
    now you live by yourself
it's called growing up and it's starting right now

so I won't cry for you, or you, or you ooh
I won't cry for you, or you, ooh ooh

    so it goes

Paul McCartney - Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five Remastered

    5:33

    Band On The Run

Band On The Run, the second album by Paul McCartney & Wings, was released 40 years ago today (5 December 1973). It was Wings' third album. It became Wings' most successful album and remains the most celebrated of McCartney's post-Beatles albums. It was 1974's top-selling studio album in the United Kingdom and Australia, and revitalised McCartney's critical standing.

In 2000 Q magazine placed it at number 75 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. In 2012, Band On The Run was voted 418th on Rolling Stone magazine's revised list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. A contemporary review by Jon Landau in Rolling Stone described the album as with the possible exception of John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band, the finest record yet released by any of the four musicians who were once called The Beatles.

After the success of Red Rose Speedway and Live And Let Die -- the featured song for the James Bond movie of the same name -- Wings began contemplating its next album. Paul and Linda McCartney began writing new songs at their Scottish retreat soon after concluding their 1973 tour.

Bored with recording in the United Kingdom, they wanted to go to an exotic locale. After asking EMI to send him a listing of all their international recording studios, Paul happened upon Lagos in Nigeria and was instantly taken with the idea of recording in Africa.

Alongside the McCartneys, guitarist and pianist Denny Laine, lead guitarist Henry McCullough and drummer Denny Seiwell also were set to go. However, a few weeks before departing in August, McCullough quit Wings in Scotland; Seiwell followed suit the night before the 8 August 1973 departure for Nigeria. This left just the core of the band -- Paul, Linda and Denny Laine -- to venture to Lagos, along with former Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick.

Upon arriving in Lagos, the band discovered a country in stark contrast from their visions of paradise. The country was run by a military government, with corruption and disease running rampant. The studio, located on Wharf Road in the suburb of Apapa, was ramshackle and underequipped. The control desk was faulty and there was only one tape machine, a Studer 8-track. The band rented houses near the airport in Ikeja, an hour away from the studio. Paul, Linda and their three children stayed in one while Denny Laine, Geoff Emerick and Wings' two roadies stayed in another.

The band established a routine of recording during the week and playing tourist on the weekends. They would be driven to the studio in the early afternoon where recording would last into the late evening and sometimes early morning. To make up for the departed band members, Paul would play drums and lead guitar parts with Denny playing rhythm guitar and Linda adding keyboards.

More incidents would plague Wings' Lagos stay. While out walking one night against advice, Paul and Linda were robbed at knifepoint. The assailants made away with all of their valuables and even stole a bag containing a notebook full of handwritten lyrics and songs, and cassettes containing demos for songs to be recorded. On another occasion, Paul was laying down a vocal track when he began gasping for air. According to Geoff Emerick, Sound Engineer for the album: Within seconds, [Paul] turned as white as a sheet, explaining to us in a croaking voice that he couldn't catch his breath. We decided to take him outside for some fresh air...[but] once he was exposed to the blazing heat he felt even worse and began keeling over, finally fainting dead away at our feet. Linda began screaming hysterically; she was convinced that he was having a heart attack...The official diagnosis was that he had suffered a bronchial spasm brought on by too much smoking. Another incident was the confrontation with local Afrobeat star and political activist Fela Kuti who publicly accused the band of being in Africa to exploit and steal African music after their visit to his club. Kuti even went to the studio to confront McCartney who played their songs for him proving that they contained no local influence whatsoever.

Recording of the album was completed by the third week of September and the McCartneys hosted a beach barbecue to celebrate the end of recording. They flew back to England on 23 September 1973 where they were met by fans and journalists. In October, two weeks after the band's return to London, final overdubs and orchestral tracks were added and the album was finished at George Martin's AIR Studios (George Martin was not present).

The cover photo was taken on 28 October 1973 by photographer Clive Arrowsmith against the gable end wall of the stable block in Gunnersbury Park. It depicts the now iconic view of Paul, Linda and Denny plus six other well-known people dressed as convicts caught in the spotlight of a prison searchlight (Michael Parkinson, Kenny Lynch, James Coburn, Clement Freud, Christopher Lee and John Conteh).

    CALL IT DREAMING // LYRICS:
say its here where our pieces fall in place
any rain softly kisses us on the face
    any wind means we’re running
we can sleep and see them coming
where we drift and call it dreaming
we can weep and call it singing

where we break when our hearts are strong enough
we can bow because our musics warmer than blood
where we see enough to follow
we can hear when we are hollow
where we keep the light we’re given
we can lose and call it living

where the sun isn’t only sinking fast
every night knows how long its supposed to last
where the time of our lives is all we have
and we get a chance to say before we ease away
for all the love you’ve left behind, you can have mine

say its here where our pieces fall in place
we can fear because a feelings fine to betray
    where our water isn’t hidden
we can burn and be forgiven
where our hands hurt from healing
we can laugh without a reason

because the sun isn’t only sinking fast
every moon and our bodies make shining glass
where the time of our lives is all we have
and we get a chance to say before we ease away
for all the love you’ve left behind, you can have mine

Sound in Your Head - Smalltime Napoleon /// Tim Farmers Homemade Jam

    2:31

Tim Farmer's Homemade Jam presents Smalltime Napoleon with Sound in Your Head

A jazz/pop/folk group with ears on the past and eyes on the future.

Small Time Napoleon began as the coalition of Dan Hardin and Jeff Thomas. Accomplished musicians in their own right, they’ve combined their affection for harmony, curiosity of rhythm, and fascination with the tunes of the past to create a unique musical experience. Adding to the sound is Ryan Fowler on drums and Dave Neill on bass. Both have a constantly expanding and increasingly impressive voice in their respective instruments and are great assets to the band.

With artists like Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Rufus Wainwright, and John Prine in mind they’ve recently written, recorded, and released their debut EP which has received positive feedback from listeners and critics alike. Laura Shine, Assistant Program Director/On-Air Host at Louisville’s own WFPK, says of the band, “Small Time Napoleon is poised for big time things. They are truly one of the most unique and exciting bands I’ve seen come out of Louisville in a very long time. Their music and instrumentation and vocals are exquisite!” More recently WFPK saw fit to place Sidewinder, one of two singles to receive regular airplay, at number 54 on their Top 100 Songs of 2013.

Each listener seems to hear a different thread of influences, Kyle Ware of Insider Louisville finds their sound-a mad science blend of western swing, hot jazz and folk-is already starting to gel into something wholly singular. Regardless of the category, audiences walk away with their toes tapping, humming some syncopated number of modern nostalgia seldom heard from artists today.

Small Time Napoleon is a jazz/pop/folk quartet
from Louisville, KY. Their debut EP showcases their combined love of harmony, lyricism, and swing. Recorded completly live and absent of overdubs, pitch correction, or quantization, the EP attempts a nod to the jazz greats of the past while remaining new and inventive.
Although the EP has only been available since late July 2013, it has received high praise from local news outlets and radio. WFPK recently placed “Sidewinder”, one
of two singles to receive regular radio play, at # 54 on their “Top 100 Songs of 2013”. Insider Louisville has written high praise for the band, calling them a “Big Time Discovery”.
The band’s success has continued into the new year with performances scheduled at WFPK’s Winter Wednesday and KET’s Homemade Jam. Small Time Napoleon’s sound and style continues to develop and strengthen, making them one of the most unique and significant bands to see in 2014.

    One Year In Grand Rapids

    5:11

One year passes by like a flash in the pan. although two years ago it seemed like time standed still. i had less figured out and life wasnt going the way i had intended it to. so i packed my bags and decided to get out of dodge, get out of the hometown life where i could borrow 20 bucks from my dad if i needed to buy some beer for the night. the decision to leave home wasnt out of bordem or anger. it was like i just needed to do something that impressed myself. so i was headed for truck driving school. one month of study and practice in saginaw michigan, pass the dreaded drug test. then another month of one the job training driving all over the most sallitary and boring staes north america had to offer. the first month was pretty easy. staying in a flee ridden hotel and making freinds with people whos lives had not been easy as mine, i have to say i was enjoying the way life was throwing me into situations as to say. you have been living easy dude. for instance my roomate at the hotel was two year younger than me and had 6 kids. he wasnt trying to leave his hometown or find a new life to live. he was there to put bread on the table for his kids and his wife. he was 22. After being out on the road for a couple months its no suprise i wanted to find a new place to live where i could start a new life with my new job. truck driving is a universal trade. you can pretty much live anywhere. so i decided to move to grand rapids. two hours away from my home in traverse city. not a huge leap, but hop at the very least. craigslist is full of freaks. so i knew right where to go to set up my living situatuion. i knew that i could make friends, but if i lived with some people i figured i could make them faster.
this year has been one the a have made some great dissisions in. i dont get to say that alot. i live withm y best friends, i am dating a pretty girl and i am staying in a nice apartment. so not much to complain about. My roomates try to get me out of the house as much as possible. if it werent for them i would probably have been rewatching one piece for the 5th time. its a wierd thing to have made a completely different life in the span of a year. I might have disapointed my 15 year old self. i thought i would be much further along in life and have some dumb job in an office somwhere. but what did i know at 15. and do i know better now doubt it. its not like i am disapointed. i am happy i get to eat, sleep and drink. bars around grand rapids are a mix of drunk kids ready to make mistakes and drunk adults that have already made them. i feel less like the drunk kids these days and more like a drunk adult just trying to make the best of my situation. maybe doing something different will make me more willing to be a fuck up.
being at the center of attention has always been my fortee. and being by myself is also a great luxury. i can tell you that spending a weeks at a time being alone, can be really peaceful. especially when you are trying to figure out whats next. Ive always known that truck driving wasnt going to be perminant part of mylife. just a way to get me to the next step. but what is the next step? i am going to try and make silly videos like these and try to flex my artistic muscles. maybe that will wake me up who knows i would love to make a couple more mistakes over the next year, see what trouble i can get myself in. so stay tuned... you dont want to miss out

    Lyrics:
Down in the gutter and looking for trouble
    Or something to that effect
And there she was, a metal cross ironically 'round her neck
And then she kissed me on the lips
And a fever came without a warning

    Said give me a holla
And then I will follow you down into the dark
And I was left in the depths surrounding her feral heart
Oh, there's just something about the sun
That seems so very, very boring

What did you think when you made me this way?
What did you think when you love me this way?
Hold me so close when we get to the gates
And we'll be together forever and ever and more

If you desire then you be my fire and I'll be your gasoline
I'm getting sick of all the kicks this city is selling me
And she said: Hey, let's get away
And I'll be your new religion, baby

What did you think when you made me this way?
What did you think when you love me this way?
Hold me so close when we get to the gates
And we'll be together forever and ever and more

    (Hold me close)
    (Smother me)
    (Hold me close)

Los Campesinos! - Songs About Your Girlfriend

    4:08

Los Campesinos! - Songs About Your Girlfriend
Track #8 from 'A good night for a fist fight'
    Lyrics:

    You do not like us
    Cause your girlfriend likely does
    And all your friends agree
    On her soft-spot for me

    I'll have my hard hands
Over her soft spots soon, you will see
And if you want a list of all her favourite bits
The next time I am free
    Quite comprehensively
I will scrawl them all down for you as an apology

Tell her the times we shared that broke have been repaired
Cinders of our old jokes have once again been stoked
But with a different girl, funnier now they've been rehearsed

All night hung on your every word
'til we were interrupted by the birds singing
    Oh your mask is slipping
    Oh your mask is slipping.

Songs I've written about your girlfriend
Are just psalms of spite since it came to an end

Cause I never made her smile like that
And she never made me smile right back
Although I always made her purr like a cat
She said I never made her smile like that

She stubbed her home club's crest on me with cigarettes
A swift that matched the bird upon her football shirt
She would lift the hem, she would wear that thing like a skirt
The last time I was there she let me wear her clothes
She painted my lips red so that we both ensured
I kiss her every inch, my god the girl looked like she'd burned

All night hung on your every word
'til we were interrupted by the birds singing
    Oh your mask is slipping
    Oh your mask is slipping.

Songs I've written about your girlfriend
Are just psalms of spite since it came to an end
All these songs I've written about your girlfriend
Are just killing time while my heart is on the mend

Cause I never made her smile like that
And she never made me smile right back
Although I always made her purr like a cat
She said I never made her smile like that

Their performances have been known to involve bloody tambourines, wrestling, lipstick smeared melodicas, tap shoes, old kitchen cabinets and dinosaurs. The Lisps are the public/performative version of all the relationships you're struggling with.

    The Lisps are:
    Sammy Tunis - vocals/tambo
    César Alvarez - vocals/guitar/whistling

What Is Love? // A Justin Bieber Love Story Chapter Eight Thats why its called a disguise

    41

Justin, I don't want to hang around the hotel all day I sighed. I know it's pretty boring He said. He looked around. Why don't we ask Kenny if he can drive us to the mall or something? Justin suggested. I nodded. But how's that going to work? Your Justin Bieber, you can't just casually walk into a mall like Hey I'm Shopping! I sighed. Justin laughed. No, that's why theres a thing called a disguise He said, emphasizing around the world 'Disguise'. I sighed. If you think it will work then fine I smiled. Trust me, it will work he said, nodding, and smiling at me. We rushed through more corridors, to the elevator, pressing the button to the lobby. Kenny was leaning to the front check-in desk, talking to the bellhop. Kenny! Justin screamed, running up to him. Kenny span round. Hey man what's up? He said, glancing over at me. Can you drive us to the mall? He said, with a cute puppy dog face. With no bodyguard? Hell no He said, folding his arms. Kenny, who's my bodyguard... Justin sighed. Me, but listen. I can drive you but I can't stay around with you He moaned. I have disguises! Please Kenny, Jenna and I are bored I sighed. Kenny paused. Exchanging glances between me and Justin. We both looked at him hopefully. Fine He said, grabbing his car keys and heading toward the door. Justin turned round and smiled at me, following Kenny.

Thanks man Justin said, putting his hood up, cap on and sunglasses on. I got out the car quietly, nodding at Kenny signalling a thank you. He smiled politely at me then turned back to Justin. No messing around He said, starting the engine and driving away. Wanna watch a movie here then? He said. I nodded, walking toward the cinema's with him. I wanna watch Karate Kid I said, looking up at the big cardboard cut out of Jaden Smith. Me and Sophie loved him, we love the film pursuit of happiness, we got it in an art class when someone wrote a review of it and it was on the wall. I've watched that, with Jaden himself Justin said. I sighed. Tell him I said I love him? I said, laughing. I can call him if you want? Justin said. I froze. Not yet I smiled. Justin looked at me weird. Okay He replied. We got our ticket's, popcorn, drinks, shit like that. We sat down near the back, where the best view was and you could cause most trouble. The movie started, and we sat there talking and laughing. We had been warned a few times, but didn't really care.

Once the movie had finished, I begged Justin to call Jaden. Call him! I screamed. Justin was laughing. Call him call him call him! I screamed, grabbing for his phone. He held it up high, out of my reach. I tried to jump, but failed. And sat there sobbing. I'll call him He laughed. My face lit up. I stood up again, smiling with excitement. He put it on loud speaker. Hello? Jaden answered. I froze. Yo it's Justin Justin replied. Yo, what;s up? He asked. Good bro, well I'm hanging out with this girl and she wanted to speak to you Justin replied. Aight put her on Jaden replied. Were on loudspeaker Justin asked. I laughed. Hi I said quietly. Hey, how are you? Jaden asked. I'm good. Just watched karate kid I laughed. Haha, was it good? He replied. Yup I said. Jaden laughed. Justin spoke. Well yeah, you just made her dream come true Justin laughed. I grinned from ear to ear. Haha, I feel special now He laughed. You should! Anyway gotta go, bye Justin said, hanging up. I just spoke to Jaden Smith! I screamed. People turned round, looking at me like I was some demented weirdo.

    Humbug by Amanda Wansa Morgan

    4:35

Nathan Burke singing original musical theatre cabaret song Humbug by Amanda Wansa Morgan

Performed as a part of the Ole Miss APO show, Reasons to Rejoice
    Directed by Max Mattox

    December 3rd, 2014
    Oxford, MS

    Lyrics:

I sit here in my little house with my lots of things
Things that most the people can’t afford
I don’t need anyone to hold.
    No, I don’t feel cold
And I’ve got lots of books so I’m not bored.
And all the neighbors waste their coal on glowing lights and decorations they don’t need.
    Folderol,
    indeed

    And Outside they are caroling
But don’t they know that they’re singing offkey,
    Well, to me…
And they think that they’re happy with their bells and boots and holly
    While they’re singing poorly
Fa la la, fa la la, fa la la la la...
Deck the halls with boughs of holly...

I sat here at my fancy desk and I work all day
While most the people stay inside
    I’ve no need to hide.
I pay all of my bills on time
    I count every dime
When most the people spend it all…at the stores and halls
And I sit there as they walk by and stare and judge and wonder why I don’t come out
    And play about

    And Outside they are caroling
But don’t they know that they’re singing offkey,
    Well, to me…
And they think that they’re happy with their bells and boots and holly
    While they’re singing poorly
    Fa la la ...

And there’s no reason why I have to tell them why I stay inside
And there’s no reason why I should explain
And there’s no reason why she went and left me standing here alone
And there’s no reason why I should feel pain.
I sat there at my little desk with my little book
And watched as she walked out the door
    I said nothing more.
I sat there and took back my ring
They were caroling outside the window of the store.
And I thought that she understood that I was trying to make good for both of us

    And Outside they are caroling
But don’t they know that they’re singing offkey,
    Well, to me…
Fa la la (Jingle – Deck – etc.)

Cellar Sessions: Jordan Klassen - The Horses Are Stuck November 21st, 2017 City Winery New York

    4:18

Jordan Klassen sits down for a One On One Session at City Winery New York on November 21st, 2017. Watch the full session here: For more info visit: Audio & Video by: Ehud Lazin

    Setlist:
    Yer Cure
    Too Far Gone
    The Horses Are Stuck

Javelin is an album that rewrites history. These ten songs, among the most confidently and imaginatively arranged Jordan Klassen has ever recorded, engage the past, reassess recollections and impressions, turn failures not into successes but lessons for the future. That much is evident from the opening track, “Glory B,” which percolates with barely contained energy: disembodied vocals shouting encouragement, jittery percussion providing a potent backbeat, swirl of clicks and thrums that build into a clear-eyed epiphany. At the center of this pop conflagration, Klassen’s vocals remain calm, perhaps even contented, as he delivers the chorus like a fanfare: “Hold your memory up to the light, memory up to the light.”

These songs spring from hard experiences—namely, from Klassen’s struggle with depression and his mother’s diagnosis with breast cancer. He writes about these subjects from a variety of perspectives: One verse might be straightforward and even startlingly candid (“I have seen you take the poison,” he sings on “Delilah,” and you don’t have to be an oncologist to understand the implications) , another might be slyly elusive, as though sung in code (“I love you more, like kick drums on your bedroom door,” goes the chorus of the gorgeously moving “No Salesman”).

“I’m kind of an open person,” he admits. “I don’t really hide many things. Writing these songs, I just felt like I was doing what I do. But I hope and I think I’m better at being vulnerable. Or, I’m vulnerable with more clarity.”

That clarity did not come easy. Around the time he was winding down his last tour for his 2013 album, Repentance, Klassen’s mother was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. During her first round of chemotherapy, doctors discovered it had spread to her lymph nodes. Her son wrote about the experience on “Delilah,” one of the most affecting songs on the album. With its gently strummed guitar theme, cascades of prismatic piano notes, and curious glockenspiel solo, it sounds like the aching heart of Javelin. “It was me wanting to give her a gift and in the process to say, Just keep going. It’s going to be okay. I’m here.”

And yet, to craft these songs Klassen had to take a step back—or several steps way back. He got about as far from Vancouver and its semi-tropical rainforest and decamped to the deserts of the Lone Star State—in particular, the town of Tornillo, just outside El Paso. On the recommendation of James Vincent McMorrow—who recorded his 2014 album Post Tropical there—Klassen booked sessions at Sonic Ranch, a fairly isolated studio where he could lose himself in music, working long days and nights to capture the sounds he heard in his head and to devise all new ones in the studio.

He played the role of producer and played almost all the instruments on the record—a solitary recording experience, but one that kept things focused. “I wanted it to be scary. I have a lot of friends in Vancouver that I’ve worked with in the past, and I have my own little studio as well. But it felt too comfortable here. I needed to challenge myself, so I thought I would go down there and produce it myself in a place I’d never been before, with gear I didn’t know. Oh, this is one of the first synths ever made. I think I’ll throw it through this arpeggiator to replace that guitar I thought was going to be on this song.”

Sonically, Javelin is a mixing of ambient and rhythmic elements, from the ebullient African percussion of “St. Fraser” to the heavily reverbed vocals of closer “Smoking Too Long.” Klassen found inspiration—a patron saint, of sorts—in an unlikely figure. “The record is a nod to the ‘90s New Age music that I grew up with,” he says with a slight chuckle. “My mom was really into Enya, and I wanted to explore some of those sounds in a very modern way. I wanted to really embrace ethereality.” It’s not hard to hear echoes of “Orinoco Flow” or “Caribbean Blue” in the soft-focus thrum of “Miles,” even the delicate overlay of instruments on “We Got Married,” even the whispered valedictory of “Smoking Too Long.”

Crafting this unique album was, Klassen says, therapeutic, yet he is hesitant to use more concrete terms like “healing” or “recovery,” which suggest an end to things. His journey continues, and the terrain isn’t quite as rocky as it had been. The experience, he concludes, “helped me to just own things. It makes things solid, makes them tangible. But I think life always takes a long time. I didn’t just write these songs and walk away feeling great. It’s good enough right now just to have a historical document of what I’ve been through the last couple of years.”
