  • Swedish jazz - Charles Redland and his orch - High ball

    3:12

One example of some true Swedish jazz. This music was seldom recorded. The music companies in Sweden was conservative in choosing objects for recording, so normally, real jazz musicians are often to be heard just in recording of schlagers, but in 1936 -37 it changed a bit and some recordings was done especially at Swedish label Sonora witch started it's swing label. That opened the door and more and more jazz was recorded, like here at the Kristall's label, even if still the most recordings was done in more traditional forms of popular music.
Charles Redland (1911-1994) was a multi musician and mastered a lot of instrument, most known is he playing saxophone or trombone. He also introduced vibraphone used as solo instrument in jazz recordings in Sweden.. His composition High ball was recorded 11th January of 1938

Swedish Jazz : Now & Then...
Will be a series of one-hour episodes combining live concert footage with documentary style vignettes intended to shine a light on the current state of Swedish Jazz compared to the one from the 50-60's often referred to as the Golden Era of Swedish Jazz.
Through the eyes of jazz musicians, club owners, journalists and historians we aim to illustrate where jazz has been, where it is at and where it is going as part of the ongoing effort to re-popularize the genre in both Sweden as well as around the globe. ..

    MORE GYPSY JAZZ GUITAR LESSONS:

Swedish guitar phenom Andreas Oberg has performed with and earned the accolades of such guitar luminaries as Les Paul, Toots Thielemans, Bireli Lagrene, Larry Coryell and Frank Vignola. Along with regular TV and radio appearances, Andreas is often featured in international guitar publications.

His partner in crime, Frank Vignola, is a recognized master of a wide range of styles from jazz to bluegrass. Illustrating this depth, Frank has worked with legends such as Donald Fagen, David Grisman and -- like Andreas -- Les Paul. A Long Island boy, Frank is far from being a jazz snob and has graced the stages of everyone from Madonna to Ringo Starr.

In Gypsy Duo, Frank and Andreas will teach you the many different techniques used within Gypsy jazz music such as picking, rhythmic patterns and harmonic ideas in a duet format. They also call upon their years of experience in jazz and bebop styles to infuse new ideas into the style, such as sweep picking, working from different tonal centers, new fingering approaches and fresh rhythmic ideas.
