  • Sufjan Stevens - Mystery of Love

    4:11

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is a sensual and transcendent tale of first love, based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman, written by Oscar® nominee James Ivory and starring Armie Hammer (The Man from U.N.C.L.E, On the Basis of Sex) and Timothée Chalamet (Lady Bird, Little Women). Its soundtrack is a mix of 80s pop, classical compositions & songs by singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens, including two songs written specifically for the film.

    Listen to the full soundtrack:

While the soundtrack for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is a compilation of tracks by numerous musicians, Guadagnino decided he wanted to approach American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens to create a song especially for the film. “An artist for whom I have enormous admiration is Sufjan. His voice is fantastic and angelic, and his lyrics are so sharp and deep and full of sorrow and beauty. The music is so haunting. All these elements were the ones I wanted to envision in the film.”

While Guadagnino knew that Stevens had never collaborated on a movie before, he reached out. Stevens read the book, they had a long conversation, and the result was that he wrote not one, but two original songs for the film: “Mystery of Love” and “Visions of Gideon”.

The soundtrack for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME also includes tracks by John Adams and Ryuichi Sakamoto as well as pieces written by Erik Satie, Maurice Ravel and Johann Sebastian Bach. As the film is set in the 1980s, Guadagnino chose period Italian pop music (including Giorgio Moroder & Joe Esposito’s “Lady Lady Lady”) for the radio, but particularly spotlights The Psychedelic Furs’ anthem “Love My Way”. “I love The Psychedelic Furs,” says Guadagnino. “It’s kind of autobiographical, because I remember listening to that song when I was seventeen and being completely affected by it. I wanted to pay homage to myself then.”

    LYRICS
Oh, to see without my eyes
The first time that you kissed me
Boundless by the time I cried
I built your walls around me
White noise, what an awful sound
    Fumbling by Rogue River
Feel my feet above the ground
    Hand of God, deliver me
    Oh, oh woe-oh-woah is me
The first time that you touched me
    Oh, will wonders ever cease?
Blessed be the mystery of love
    Lord, I no longer believe
    Drowned in living waters
Cursed by the love that I received
    From my brother's daughter
    Like Hephaestion, who died
    Alexander's lover
    Now my riverbed has dried
    Shall I find no other?
    Oh, oh woe-oh-woah is me
    I'm running like a plover
    Now I'm prone to misery
The birthmark on your shoulder reminds me
How much sorrow can I take?
    Blackbird on my shoulder
And what difference does it make
    When this love is over?
Shall I sleep within your bed
    River of unhappiness
Hold your hands upon my head
'Til I breathe my last breath
    Oh, oh woe-oh-woah is me
The last time that you touched me
    Oh, will wonders ever cease?
Blessed be the mystery of love

    Lyrics:
    Is it love you’re after?
A sign of the flood or one more disaster
Don’t do to me what you did to America
Don’t do to me what you did to America

I have loved you, I have grieved
I’m ashamed to admit I no longer believe
I have loved you, I received
I have traded my lifeFor a picture of the scenery
Don’t do to me what you did to America
Don’t do to me what you did to America

I give it all up in laughter
The sign of the cross awaiting disaster
The dove flew to me like a vision of paranoia
The dove flew to me like a vision of paranoia

I have loved you like a dream
I have kissed your lips like a Judas in heat
    I have worshipped, I believed
I have broke your bread for a splendor of machinery
Don’t look at me like I’m acting hysterical
Don’t look at me like I’m acting hysterical

I have worshipped, I have cried
I have put my hands in the wounds on your side
I have tasted of your blood
I have choked on the waters, I abated the flood
I am broken, I am beat
But I will find my way like a Judas in heat
I am fortune, I am free
I’m like a fever of light in the land of opportunity

Don’t do to me what you did to America
Don’t do to me what you do to yourself
Don’t do to me what you did to America
Don’t do to me what you do to yourself
Don’t do to me what you did to America
Don’t do to me what you do to yourself
Don’t do to me what you did to America
Don’t do to me what you do to yourself

Don’t do to me what you did to America
Don’t do to me what you did to America
Don’t do to me what you did to America

    LYRICS:

    I should have known better
To see what I could see
    My black shroud
    Holding down my feelings
    A pillar for my enemies

I should have wrote a letter
And grieve what I happen to grieve
    My black shroud
    I never trust my feelings
    I waited for the remedy

When I was three, three maybe four
She left us at that video store
Be my rest, be my fantasy

    I’m light as a feather
I’m bright as the Oregon breeze
    My black shroud
    Frightened by my feelings
I only want to be a relief

    No, I’m not a go-getter
The demon had a spell on me
    My black shroud
    Captain of my feelings
The only thing I want to believe

When I was three, and free to explore
I saw her face on the back of the door
Be my vest, be my fantasy

    I should have known better
    Nothing can be changed
The past is still the past
    The bridge to nowhere
    I should’ve wrote a letter
Explaining what I feel, that empty feeling

Don’t back down, concentrate on seeing
The breakers in the bar, the neighbor’s greeting
    My brother had a daughter
The beauty that she brings, illumination

Don’t back down, there is nothing left
The breakers in the bar, no reason to live
I’m a fool in the fetter
Rose of Aaron’s beard, where you can reach me

Don’t back down: nothing can be changed
    Cantilever bridge, the drunken sailor
    My brother had a daughter
The beauty that she brings, illumination

    LYRICS:
Spirit of my silence I can hear you
But I’m afraid to be near you
And I don’t know where to begin
And I don’t know where to begin

Somewhere in the desert there’s a forest
    And an acre before us
But I don’t know where to begin
But I don’t know where to begin
Again I’ve lost my strength completely, oh be near me,
Tired old mare with the wind in your hair

Amethyst and flowers on the table, is it real or a fable?
Well I suppose a friend is a friend
And we all know how this will end

Chimney swift that finds me, be my keeper
    Silhouette of the cedar
What is that song you sing for the dead?
What is that song you sing for the dead?
I see the signal searchlight strike me in the window of my room
Well I got nothing to prove
Well I got nothing to prove

I forgive you, mother, I can hear you
And I long to be near you
But every road leads to an end
Yes every road leads to an end
Your apparition passes through me in the willows:
Five red hens—you’ll never see us again
    You’ll never see us again

    LYRICS:
The only thing that keeps me from driving this car
Half-light, jack knife into the canyon at night
Signs and wonders: Perseus aligned with the skull
Slain Medusa, Pegasus alight from us all

Do I care if I survive this? Bury the dead where they’re found
In a veil of great surprises: I wonder did you love me at all?

The only thing that keeps me from cutting my arm
Cross hatch, warm bath, Holiday Inn after dark
Signs and wonders: water stain writing the wall
Daniel’s message, blood of the moon on us all

Do I care if I despise this? Nothing else matters, I know
In a veil of great disguises: How do I live with your ghost?

Should I tear my eyes out now?
Everything I see returns to you somehow
Should I tear my heart out now?
Everything I feel returns to you somehow
I want to save you from your sorrow

The only reason why I continue at all
Faith in reason, I wasted my life playing dumb
Signs and wonders: sea lion caves in the dark
Blind faith, God’s grace, nothing else left to impart

Do I care if I survive this? Bury the dead where they’re found
In a veil of great surprises, hold to my head till I drown
Should I tear my eyes out now, before I see too much?
Should I tear my arms out now? I want to feel your touch

Should I tear my eyes out now?
Everything I see returns to you somehow
Should I tear my heart out now?
Everything I feel returns to you somehow

    LYRICS:
The evil it spread like a fever ahead
It was night when you died, my firefly
What could I have said to raise you from the dead?
Oh could I be the sky on the fourth of July?

    “Well you do enough talk
My little hawk, why do you cry?
Tell me what did you learn from the Tillamook burn?
    Or the Fourth of July?
    We’re all gonna die.”

Sitting at the bed with the halo at your head
Was it all a disguise, like Junior High
Where everything was fiction, future, and prediction
Now where am I? My fading supply

“Did you get enough love, my little dove
    Why do you cry?
And I’m sorry I left, but it was for the best
    Though it never felt right
    My little Versailles.”

The hospital asked should the body be cast
Before I say goodbye, my star in the sky
Such a funny thought to wrap you up in cloth
Do you find it all right, my dragonfly?

“Shall we look at the moon, my little loon
    Why do you cry?
Make the most of your life, while it is rife
    While it is light

    Well you do enough talk
My little hawk, why do you cry?
Tell me what did you learn from the Tillamook burn?
    Or the Fourth of July?
    We’re all gonna die.”

HEAR THE FULL INTERVIEW AND PERFORMANCE:
Sufjan Stevens has made music about historical events, roadways -- even serial killers. But his latest project, electro-pop album The Age of Adz (pronounced odds), is an inward-focused project dealing with the primal side of themes like love and death. Plus, there's a whole cosmic thing going on too. Before back-to-back concerts in Prospect Park next month, he joins us to perform live in the studio.

  • Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly: NPR Music Field Recordings

    4:47

In a Manhattan studio, some of the musicians behind Planetarium play the album's beautiful closing track.

    By Benjamin Naddaff-Hafrey

Early on a spring morning in Manhattan, Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly and Nadia Sirota gathered at Reservoir Studios in Manhattan to play a song first performed five years ago and an ocean away.

Mercury is the closing track off Planetarium, a song cycle about the planets by Stevens, Dessner, Muhly and James McAlister. The work was originally composed on commission for the Dutch concert hall Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, and first performed there in 2012. Five turns around the sun later, Planetarium will arrive in recorded form on June 9 via 4AD.

Mercury is one of the most intimate songs on the record, a quality that's emphasized by its spot just after the 15-minute, ambient, electronic epic, Earth. Where the record's other songs foreground synthesizers and spastic electric drum samples reminiscent of 2010's The Age of Adz, Mercury largely rests on Muhly's gentle piano work and Stevens' beautiful vocal. Where once, in the original live performances, the song swelled to a cinematic rush on the order of Illinois, it's now spare and elegant. Its warm intimacy is all the more apparent in the group's live performance, which features Dessner of The National lightly doubling on guitar Stevens' wordless refrain at the song's close.

Like many of the pieces on the record, its lyrics are a constellation of the cosmic, the personal and the mythological. The song, named for the messenger god, is a perfect musical setting for the feeling of having something dear carried away from you. All that I've known to be of life / and I am gentle, Stevens sings. You ran off with it all.

Life is so abundant here, and yet we're so obsessed with the exterior of here, Stevens told All Songs Considered's Bob Boilen in a companion interview. That's what's so interesting, there's a sort of beautiful, perfect order to life on earth that's so mysterious and so profound. And yet, as people, we really fuck it up. We're so dysfunctional. And we seek guidance from the exterior world — from the heavens — to help us understand our purpose here, and to sort of create a sense of order.

    Lyrics:
    Tonya Harding, my star
Well this world is a cold one
But it takes one to know one
And God only knows what you are

    Just some Portland white trash
    You confronted your sorrow
    Like there was no tomorrow
While the rest of the world only laughed

    Triple axel on high
    A delightful disaster
    You jumped farther and faster
You were always so full of surprises

    Are your laces untied?
What’s the frown on your face for?
And just what are the skates for now?
Tell me which is your good side?

    Are you lonely at night?
Do you miss all the glory
    And the mythical story
    Of the Olympian life?

    Yamaguchi in red
She had high rise and roses
    And red-carpet poses
    And her outfit was splendid

    Nancy Kerrigan’s charm
Well she took quite a beating
    So you’re not above cheating
Can you blame her for crying?

    Tonya, you were the brightest
Yeah you rose from the ashes
    And survived all the crashes
Wiping the blood from your white tights

Has the world had its fun?
Yeah they’ll make such a hassle
And they’ll build you a castle
Then destroy it when they’re done

    Tonya Harding, my friend
Well this world is a bitch, girl
Don’t end up in a ditch, girl
I’ll be watching you close to the end

So fight on as you are
    My American princess
May God bless you with incense
    You’re my shining American star

    LYRICS:
Now that I fell into your arms
    My only lover
    Give out to give in
I search for the capsule I lost

    Drag me to hell
In the valley of The Dalles
    Like my mother
    Give wings to a stone
It’s only the shadow of a cross

    I slept on my back
In the shade of the meadowlark
    Like a champion
    Get drunk to get laid
I take one more hit when you depart

I’ll drive that stake through the center of my heart
    Lonely vampire
    Inhaling its fire
I’m chasing the dragon too far

    There’s blood on that blade
    Fuck me, I’m falling apart
    My assassin
    Like Casper the ghost
There’s no shade in the shadow of the cross

Are we to speak, first day of the week
    Stumbling words at the bar
Beauty blue eyes, my order of fries
    Long Island kindness and wine
Beloved of John, I get it all wrong
I read you for some kind of poem
Covered in lines, the fossils I find
Have they no life of their own?

    So can we pretend sweetly
    Before the mystery ends?
I am a man with a heart that offends
with its lonely and greedy demands
There’s only a shadow of me; in a manner of speaking I’m dead

Such a waste, your beautiful face
    Stumbling carpet arise
Go follow your gem, your white feathered friend
    Icarus, point to the sun
If history speaks of two baby teeth
I’m painting the hills blue and red
They said beware, Lord hear my prayer:
I’ve wasted my throes on your head

So can we be friends sweetly
    Before the mystery ends?
I love you more than the world can contain
in its lonely and ramshackle head
There’s only a shadow of me; in a manner of speaking I’m dead

    I’m holding my breath
    My tongue on your chest
What can be said of my heart?
If history speaks, the kiss on my cheek
Where there remains but a mark
Beloved my John, so I’ll carry on
Counting my cards down to one
And when I am dead, come visit my bed
My fossil is bright in the sun

    So can we contend peacefully
    Before my history ends?
Jesus I need you, be near, come shield me
From fossils that fall on my head
There’s only a shadow of me; in a manner of speaking, I’m dead

    3:58

    Artist: Sufjan Stevens
Album: Greetings from Michigan: The Great Lake State
Song: For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti

    Lyrics:
    I've have called you children
    I have called you son
    What is there to answer
    If I'm the only one
    Morning comes in Paradise
    Morning comes in light
    Still I must obey
    Still I must invite

    If there's anything to say
    If there's anything to do
    If there's any other way
    I'll do anything for you

    I was dressed in embarassment
    I was dressed in white
If you had a part of me
    Will you take your time
    Even if I come back
    Even if I die
    Is there some idea
    To replace my life

    Like a father to impress
    Like a mother's morning dress
If we ever make a mess
    I'll do anything for you

    I have called you preacher
    I have called you son
    If you have a father
    Or if you haven't one

    I'll do anything for you

    I did everything for you

    LYRICS:
Light struck from the lemon tree
What if I’d never seen hysterical light from Eugene?
Lemon yoghurt, remember I pulled at your shirt
I dropped the ashtray on the floor
I just wanted to be near you

    Emerald Park, wonders never cease
The man who taught me to swim, he couldn’t quite say my first name
Like a father he led community water on my head
    And he called me “Subaru”
And now I want to be near you

Since I was old enough to speak I’ve said it with alarm
Some part of me was lost in your sleeve where you hid your cigarettes
    No I’ll never forget
I just want to be near you

Still I pray to what I cannot see
In the sprinkler I mark the evidence known from the start
From the bed near your death, and all the machines that made a mess
    Far away the falcon flew
Now I want to be near you

    What’s left is only bittersweet
For the rest of my life, admitting the best is behind me
Now I’m drunk and afraid, wishing the world would go away
What’s the point of singing songs
If they’ll never even hear you?

    Mystery Of Love ????️????Lyrics
Oh, to see without my eyes
The first time that you kissed me
Boundless by the time I cried
I built your walls around me
White noise, what an awful sound
    Fumbling by Rogue River
Feel my feet above the ground
    Hand of God, deliver me

    Oh, woah woe is me
The first time that you touched me
    Oh, will wonders ever cease?
Blessed be the mystery of love

    Lord, I no longer believe
    Drowned in living waters
Cursed by the love that I received
    From my brother's daughter
    Like Hephaestion, who died
    Alexander's lover
    Now my riverbed has dried
    Shall I find no other?

    Oh, woah woe is me
    I'm running like a plover
    Now I'm prone to misery
The birthmark on your shoulder reminds me

How much sorrow can I take?
    Blackbird on my shoulder
And what difference does it make
    When this love is over?
Shall I sleep within your bed
    River of unhappiness
Hold your hands upon my head
Till I breathe my last breath

    Oh, woah woe is me
The last time that you touched me
    Oh, will wonders ever cease?
Blessed be the mystery of love

    4:40

Lyrics video of the beautiful song Fourth of July, by Sufjan Stevens.

  • Sufjan Stevens & Julien Baker — A Crisis of Faith

    14:35

Know my name and all of my hideous mistakes, but I rejoice.

In 2015, two darling indie folk artists released albums about struggling with their faith and doubting God - Sufjan Stevens with Carrie & Lowell, and Julien Baker with Sprained Ankle. Despite their spiritual lives being almost complete opposites, both of these albums have been vital for me in my own relationship with God.

Aporia is a New Age album from Sufjan Stevens and his step-father and record label co-owner, Lowell Brams. The 21 songs on Aporia are tightly crafted, resonating with a gem-like intensity. In the spirit of the New Age composers who sanded off the edges of their synths’ sawtooth waves, Aporia approximates a rich soundtrack from an imagined sci-fi epic brimming with moody, hooky, gauzy synthesizer soundscapes. The album may suggest the progeny of a John Carpenter, Wendy Carlos, and Mike Oldfield marriage, but it stands apart from these touchstones and generates a meditative universe all its own.

    Lyrics:
Praise the mountain and the rain
All the gifts that still remain
But the greatest gift of all
And the law above all laws
Is to love your friends and lovers
And lay down your life for your brothers
    As you abide in peace
    So will your delight increase

As the mystery of the cross
    Asa Lovejoy lost the toss

I lay down my life for my brothers

This song from his recent album, Carrie and Lowell touches on his connection to his mother after she died. In an interview about this album he said, In lieu of her death, I felt a desire to be with her, so I felt like abusing drugs and alcohol and fucking around a lot and becoming reckless and hazardous was my way of being intimate with her. Sufjan Stevens has made music about historical events, roadways -- even serial killers. But his latest project, electro-pop album The Age of Adz (pronounced odds), is an inward-focused project dealing with the primal side of themes like love and death. I never thought I would be able to film Sufjan. I had tried my luck one time before, but the good man needs his time, a kind of slow build into a calm moment of rare revelation. And so it was no surprise that, 10 minutes before filming him, he kind a freaked out, saying, with fleeing and frightened eyes, like an animal being hunted...

    --------------------
Aporia is a New Age album from Sufjan Stevens and his step-father and record label co-owner, Lowell Brams.

  • Star Of Wonder - Sufjan Stevens

    7:08

This is a video for Sufjan Stevens' Star Of Wonder, from his Christmas Songs album.
This may seem a bit late, now that it's January 6th and all, but actually, I've got a reason for posting it today. :)
Today is the day of Epiphany, a day when the coming of the wise men is celebrated, much as Christ's birth is celebrated on December 25th. Way back in the day, there was this thing called the Twelve Days of Christmas, or 'Christmastide', when the coming of Christ was celebrated, from December 25th to January 6th... there's still some people that celebrate it this way, I'm sure, but I imagine most don't nowadays... but, I thought I'd celebrate a bit by posting this. :)
So, at least in some circles, today, Epiphany, is the official end of the Christmas season. :)
For a little education, the wise men (or Magi), contrary to what many Christmas cards would have us believe, actually showed up two years after Christ's birth, according to the Gospel of Matthew (better late than never, I'd say). And also, there's really no certainty that there were three of them. The Gospel of Matthew doesn't say how many there were. The educated guess is three because they brought three gifts (gold, frankincense, and myrrh). :)
Anyways, I've always liked the story of the wise men.
Just the picture in my mind of some old men, traveling alone through the night in the desert, under the stars, captures my imagination...
And it makes me wonder... What were they thinking? And did they have any doubts? Did they wonder if they were just crazy sometimes, following some star to find a child in some obscure town?
I can relate to their journey. It must have been long and hard, and they must have wondered what they would find, and maybe if it was even worth the journey. But they kept going, and they had faith, and hope... and finally found what they were looking for... which is encouraging to me. :)
Also, I love gazing at the stars. Sometimes I go out, when the weather's good, and with my dog usually, in the middle of the night, and walk out under the stars and think, and pray, and explore... sure beats watching TV, I'll tell you. :)
Well, I hope you enjoy this video. :)
May you too wonder when you think of these things, and may you be able to someday find the One that the Magi were seeking, and that I've been seeking to, the One who made the stars, and us, and came to save...

    Here's the lyrics :)

    I call you
    From the comet's cradle
    I found you
    Trembling by yourself
    When the night falls
    Lightly on your right-wing shoulder
    Wonderful know-it-all
Slightly where the night gets colder

    Oh, conscience,
    Where will you carry me?
    I found you
    Star of terrifying effigies
    When the night falls
I carry myself to the fortress
    Of your glorious cost
Oh, I may seek your fortress

    When the night falls
We see the star of wonder
    Wonderful night falls
    We see you
    We see you

I see the stars coming down there
Coming down there to the yard
I see the stars coming down there
Coming down there to my heart
    [Repeat x 10]

I see the stars coming down there
Coming down there to the yard

These days, days, days run away
    Like horses over the hills
