Yodeling Donah Hyland * 2000 Avoca Festival

    5:21

Donah and I were pen & telephone pals for several years before we finally met at the Avoca Festival. She is everybit as energetic, outgoing, and warm in person as she in on the phone. Most definitely in the top tier of Yodelers, Donah takes you there, brings you back, and leaves you with a craving for more. Donah is one of the many, many artists that I met through my Top-Rail Chatter magazine during its 7-year publication. I constantly pull out and listen to the cassettes and CDs that these fine performers sent for magazine reviews.

Sonny Rodgers Yodelers Paradise Show at the August 2000 Avoca Old Time Country Music Festival. This 3-hour show was one of Avoca's most popular attractions featuring Yodelers from around the world. In spite of week-long temperatures relentlessly hovering between 97 and 100 degrees, the performers gave it their all and the fans endured.

These excerpted clips represent some of the best performances. There are some audio glitches, of which I wasn't aware until I got home and watched the playbacks. Out of 10 film cassettes I shot, two of them suffered from this defect.

This would also be Sonny Rodgers last Avoca attendance. His cancer reappeared and the Good Lord called him home in July 2001.

Sonny Rodgers & Troy Cook, Jr. * 2000 Avoca Old Time Country Music Festival

    6:49

Sonny Rodgers is a first cousin of Jimmie Rodgers, the Singing Brakeman. You could also say that Sonny has been one of traditional country music's most consistent ambassadors, travelling the country lecturing and hosting the Sonny Rodgers Yodelers Paradise Show.

This 3-hour event was a huge favorite at the avoca Iowa Festivals, attracting famous Yodelers from around the world. In this video, Sonny shares the stage with Troy Cook, Jr. at the 2000 Avoca Festival. Cook went on to firmly establish himself on the Indie circuit, with the aide of the late Buster Doss. He is currently living in Nashville, Tennessee pursuing his music.

When I was trucking, I'd drop in on Sonny at his South Carolina home, and was one of the last persons to do so, before he passed away in July 2001. He had a unique way of making people feel like he'd known you all his life.

Sonny Rodgers plays the Mandolin at Alex Kennedys

    2:39

Sonny Rodgers was a first cousin of Blue Yodeler, Jimmie Rodgers. He toured the country promoting Rodgers music and hosting his Yodelers Paradise Shows at different traditional country music festivals. Friendly and down-home to a fault, Sonny made you feel like he'd known you all his life.

I met Sonny at the 1999 Avoca Old Time Country Music Festival and performed on his yodeling shows. When my trucking trips took me near his home in South Carolina I'd drop in for a cup of coffee and some good old fashion southern conversation. I was one of the last persons to visit him shortly before he passed away on 1 July 2001.

This video was filmed by our late friend and music historian, Alex Kennedy at his place in Omaha, Nebraska.

Yodeling Greta Elkin * 2000 Avoca Old Time Country Music Festival

    6:54

Greta is one of a kind. She is one of those international Yodelers who makes the annual trip from Europe to attend the Avoca Festivals.

Yodeling McDonald Craig * Sleep Baby Sleep

    2:15

My friend, McDonald Craig of Linden, Tennessee is a first-rate Jimmie Rodgers Yodeler. He was born in 1932 into a Country/Traditional music household and is the second oldest of seven children. His father Newt Craig was a fiddler who played mountain square dance music and his mother, Conna McDonald Craig was a piano player who played everything from popular to mountain music. While the Craig children played music as a family band, McDonald and his older brother Newt Jr. played the least while growing up. Being the eldest, they worked to help the family meet its financial obligations.

At the age of 20 McDonald left Linden to join the U.S. Army and was assigned to a Gunnery Unit in Korea where he earned a Bronze Star. When he returned from Korea Mac stayed with his parents and continued to work the farm.

He also returned to his music, brushing up on the old standards and particularly the songs of his favorites, Jimmie Rodgers and Ernest Tubb.

Sometime during the mid-1960s McDonald landed a spot on Nashville's Gold Standard Records and had four singles released by them; I Want To Tell You, Buckeye Ohio, You And My Old Guitar, and I'll Never Go To Sleep Alone. He also wrote songs like My Home In Tennessee, and Childhood Memories, the latter of which appeared on his latest CD McDonald Craig Sings Traditional Country Music released sometime in 2001.

In 1978 McDonald went to Meridian, Mississippi for the Annual Jimmie Rodgers Yodeling Championship. He beat out 72 contestants for First Place, making him the first and only African-American Yodeler to ever win that honor. According to his wife, Rosetta Craig, the Musuem curators did not want to award him, but the Judges, whom they had commissioned from California, insisted. The Museum gave in but McDonald was denied the full honors [a photo and plaque placed in the Museum] that were normally bestowed on prior winners. Undaunted, McDonald humbly accepted his win and the noteriety from that further enhanced his appeal as moved on.

His original Cassette Album McDonald Craig Sings My Home In Tennessee & Other Old Time Country Favorites was re-mastered to CD in 2001 by Roughshod Records and released as Yodeling McDonald Craig, the first of their Special Projects Promotional releases. In 2000 he appeared in the 1999 Sonny Rodgers Yodelers Paradise Show Video filmed by Roughshod Records' Mike Johnson at the 1999 Avoca, Iowa Old Time Country Music Festival. This was followed up in 2002 by a Roughshod Records Special Project CD release, Three Country Music Yodelers, Who Just Happen To Be Black, featuring two cuts each by him, Stoney Edwards, and Mike Johnson.

A crowd favorite with traditionalists wherever he played McDonald is as pure Country as you can get, performing from Texas to Tennessee, Iowa, and Nebraska, at numerous State Fairs, Folk-life Festivals, and radio stations. He has been a longstanding member of the National Traditional Country Music Association based in Anita, Iowa and is also an inductee in the Old-Time Country Music Hall of Fame.

In 2005, the State of Tennessee's Century Farms Program certified the 73-year old McDonald Craig's 110-acre farm as an Official Century Farm for having been in the same family for more than 100 years. It was purchased for $400 with a yoke of oxen as a down payment by his ex-slave great-grandparents, Tapp and Amy Craig on Christmas Day in 1871. They paid off the debt in two years. McDonald and wife Rosetta, of 49 years, still reside on the historic property. Though he still picks and sings, McDonald doesn't do much out of state performing anymore.

When it comes to pure Traditional Country Music, McDonald Craig is the real deal.

This video is from some of the archival footage that my late friend Alex Kennedy had given me in hopes that I would somehow keep the music going.

    Lyrics:

    The pebbles you've arranged
    In the sand, they're strange
They speak to me like constellations
    As we lie here
    There's a magic I can hold
    Your smile of honey gold
And that you never seem to be in short supply of

    [Chorus:]
Oooh, so baby let's get it on
    Drinking wine and killing time
    Sitting in the summer sun
You know I've wanted you so long
    Why do you have to
    Drop that bomb on me?

    Lazy days, crazy dolls
You said we've been friends too long
    Seven days in sunny June
    Were long enough to bloom
The flowers on the summer dress you wore in spring
The way we laughed as one
And then you dropped the bomb
That I've known you too long
For us to have a thing

Yodeling KG & The Ranger * 2000 Avoca Festival

    8:42

If you're a baby-boomer or older, then chances are Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, among Rex Allen were among you favorite Silver Screen Cowboy singers. KG & the Ranger are Cowboy and Western song specialists. When they take to the stage, the prairie comes alive. You can hear the Whip-por-wwl, smell the sagebrush and feel saddle-leather rubbing the bottom of your Leivs.

    Lyrics:
    [Hook]
If she don't love me, what can I do?
Just put on my best pair of shoes
    Because I'm me
Because she said, He's the one that drill the charms
    Honey let's go wrong
    I just want to know
    What's wrong with me?
    Being in love with you

    [Verse 1: Sonny Cheeba]
    Yeah
9th grade had the jingles of the swinging rainbow jacket
    Lost lingo, Bronx's only Django
    Snap, he'd got less tougher
    That's where my props go
    That's where my pops went
See my percentage is a pennant to the planet
Knock it out the ball park, Frankie
I should not tire this tire
To a better love, let the wings spread
    It'll always come back, baby
    Come back, shellac black, baby
A come back, flat black paint on a Chevy

    [Hook]
If she don't love me, what can I do?
Just put on my best pair of shoes
    Because, I'm, I'm me
    Because I'm me
    Because I'm me
    Because I'm me, I'm me

    [Verse 2: Sonny Cheeba]
Never mind my tone when I told Pretty Tony
Listen to my tone, you ain't catchin' you a Tony
Award-winning walk when you running with a shottie
    Why you running from us?
    Why you messing with us?
We ain't got no guns, we just let the bears witness
    The Grizzly, maybe Polar
You ain't ready, you ain't ready 'ready rolled up
Pulling a machete, cut the bamboo paper
    And let's roll out baby

    [Hook]
    I just want to know

MIGHTY MO RODGERS THE VIRUS CD PREVIEW

    6:36

7 songs in 6 minutes of this very timely recording.

Marvin Gaye produced a masterpiece What's Going On. In THE VIRUS I answer the provocative question the he posed decades ago.

“THE VIRUS” is Mighty Mo Rodgers’ most audacious recording.
In it he creates a bold and daring musical masterpiece around the explosive and controversial “N word”. He takes us on a musical journey through a black landscape of hope, despair and love. This musical ride is exhilarating, using gospel, blues, R&B, soul, and rap to make the point that the “N word” is more than a word. It’s a pathological virus!
What is most remarkable is that THE VIRUS is a concept album, joined together historically, musically and lovingly with the help of some incredible artists.
The Starlights, a world renowned gospel group, color THE VIRUS
with a sound that is nothing less than astounding. They sing background on seven songs and are featured on one, “400 Years of Tears”, which is soul shaking.
Margarett Floyd on “A Mother’s Prayers” sings about the anguish of many a inner-city black mother who prays for her male child somewhere out there in the streets. Margarett makes you feel her pain…incredible.
General is a conscious spoken word rapper, who gives a new meaning to the phrase “bullets ain’t got no names.”
In short, THE VIRUS is a timeless work of art with an urgent message for these troubled times.
THE VIRUS was recorded, mixed and mastered at Maurice Gainen Studios and the sound is remarkable. It leaps at you with its bold message.
Since the release of his classic “Blues is My Wailin’ Wall” 20 years ago, Mighty Mo Rodgers has been a regular on the world concert circuit. He has released 7 more highly acclaimed recordings. He is a prolific writer, having honed his skills at Motown and as a producer of several classic albums for other artists, including Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee.
